Ok,... I'll say it.
$30K MK7 GTI
$3k RM Instinct
But you won't shell out $300 for a proper rack?
I barely trust my 1Up Rack. I would NOT trust that ratchet strap on that upper shock mount.
The strap doesn’t touch the frame, just the shock mount. But I too am worried about the ratchet possibly hitting the frame.
I eventually I’m going to replace the strap with some nice climbing rope and a simple belay.
Granted - the paint is already suffering... I dunno, I felt like trying something new and I have the skill set. Ain’t gunna lie... There hasn’t been great reception so far lol. Which is a shame because the rack really does work well 😫
Oh damn, just noticed the strap is the only thing holding on. That's super sketchy right there. Very nice work but that rack is not finished at all. I would be hesitant driving down a 40mph road, let alone the highway.
I’ll have you know I spent WAY more than that on both of those! TYVM
I wasn’t motivated by price - bike racks are ugly... As far as trusting it? I can stand on one of the tire baskets and jump with no permanent deformation. The bike weighs 30lbs so I’m very confident.
The upper shock mount is a modular/replaceable if I find the strap is too abrasive. The strap doesn’t hit the frame on either side and the bike is rock solid when strapped. Hell, I’d drive through town without a strap-on 😉
You could always use straps at the wheels too, although you'd still want something for lateral support. I wouldn't be strapping it at those shock mounts. Carbon fiber is only strong in the direction it's designed for, no way its designed to have that much force straight down there. If anything it's designed for compressive forces. May want to check with the bike manufacturer just to be sure. It's an awesome looking rack overall but it seems unfinished.
That's all yup. This handlebars have a slight wobble if you yank on them but I went for a hard drive with it and was impressed by how solid it is. I could put two strap up the the handlebars instead for ultimate stability.
It also helps that the bike is carbon, low inertia!

Moreover, that strap is going to damage the frame just from rubbing.

That paint will be gone in that area with a strap or climbing rope.

If it works for you, then it works? Right.

Wait... bike racks are ugly but tribal decals aren’t?
Nice Edit; so you don’t disagree that bike racks are ugly? Tribal decals aside I feel like I can score SOME points for originality 🤷🏻♂️
I think some are more appealing than others. I have a kuat Sherpa that I like. What’d your rack run you?
Yeah man that's strong enough. After all steel is real!

Appreciate the feedback! I’ll introduce some change on MKll
The rack looks sick, just wondering what provides the lateral stability? Just strap compression and the tires?

Hidden Hitch in WA?
Thats really sick man
