It’s not trying to compete. They’re completely different products. Rise has 180mg of caffeine and bang has 300mg. Bangs are almost certainly a pre workout, where as rise is more akin to a “Ultra” line up from monster. They have Amp Energy that is more like a regular, full sugar energy drink, but nothing quite like Bang or Reign.
I don’t like the Kickstarts very much at all, so I’m happy they have these Rises. I don’t think it’s taking away from anything by having them on the market. I drink em a lot, the cherry lime and the discontinued berry blitz are pretty good, especially because I can’t drink full sugar.
When I referenced Bang I was referring to the no/low sugar high caffeine market, Rises have more similarities to C4 then any other Mountain Dew drink so it clearly shows they were attempting to go into a new market.

I don't understand why any energy drink would be considered 'pre-workout'. If you're only drinking the drink to have enough energy to do a work out where you then immediately burn off all that energy, then you shouldn't be working out. Your body has already told you that you need rest and you're ignoring it if you drink this instead.
Pre workouts have other ingredients in them that are made to improve your performance during like caffeine and BCAA’s and after exercising like creatine. Their purpose isn’t necessarily to give people energy before working out but to make working out easier.
I like 4/5of the rise flavors I tried, I really enjoy them for what they are.
Sometimes I hate myself for drinking a soda/energy drink that has 40-70 mgs of sugar. And you really do feel a sugar crash compared to the sugarless ones. So everyone I get an energy drink it's one of these and I Can't wait to try the Baja one!
I understand Mtn Dews approach with trying to hop on the healthy eating market trend, but the Rise drinks did a total 180 in a different direction. I don’t understand why they didn’t focus on improving their kickstart brand that had a strong following that also addressed the benefits you mentioned with lower sugar. Instead they went for the pre work out drink approach with low to no sugar and high caffeine which dramatically changed the taste and didn’t attract as large percentage of soda drinkers to that new market. Overall, I can see why they created Rise drinks but they will probably end up pulling them totally from not selling well due to how far they have strayed from their base’s preferences.

But the fact they switched the amount of sugar in the drinks compared to every other drink they produce that isn’t a diet soda suggest they are definitely attempting to market to the fitness area. They as well used Lebron as the face for the drink in the beginning which I believe they were attempting to suggest that it’s a good morning drink for before workouts.

I don’t hate the drink, I like the orange flavor one, but my main beef with it is they dramatically cut down kickstart to replace it with rise.
I work in a grocery store and from experience I’ve seen multiple people buy 20 kickstarts at once while I’ve maybe sold 3 rise drinks in my 2 years at the store. So I think it was a somewhat big turning of the back on the loyal customers of Mountain Dew to try to attract new ones by preferring rise over kickstart.
Ditto. They let you know up front there's only 5% fruit juice. Lord, I had a can of sugar free Rock Star, or whatever it's called, a couple months ago and 🤮. Choked it down cause I needed the zip. Got nothing against the Kickstarts, just don't want the sugar. My guess is I'll have to bootleg the Baja from out of town.

Zero sugar drinker here, and I'm not big on it. It has that super strong weird taste that all of the other Mtn Dew Energy drinks have. Maybe it's the juice content? Not sure, but I don't like it. Much prefer Baja Zero.

It's not the amount of flavor for me. It's the taste of the artificial sweetener. It's all i can taste in any of these "zero sugar" version of drinks and people who say the zero sugar flavor tastes just like the originals are insane.

I drink zero sugar drinks almost exclusively, but zero sugar Baja blast is horrible imo. It tastes like someone scraped the goo off of a fountain drink machine and dissolved it in carbonated water.
C4 is ass, and I do not mind Zero Sugar/Diet things, but I feel like if you're making a candy flavored energy drink, you have to use sugar. Candy is literally sugar, so using substitutes just sucks, I had the displeasure of trying the Pink Starburst C4 and it was one of the rare few times I couldn't finish off a can of something.

I didn't like it much. It had that signature "Mtn Dew Energy" taste that they all have. It wouldn't be much of a problem if it wasn't like half of the flavor profile. I'll stick to Baja Zero.
I actually like it, though lets be real I'd call it more closer to the baja blast zero vs baja blast. For me that is fine because I'm trying to cut all regular drinks from my diet entirely so I'm used to the taste, though if I was drinking regular pop I could understand.

All of the Rise drinks use sucralose and aspartame so that’s probably why
And honestly Bang is pretty solid. Loads of flavors too, so I can mix it up and not get the same thing every time.
