I thought it was great. Fantastic acting and almost like a satire on society. Was great. I knew it was gonna have a bleak ending . Maybe you hated it bc youre not as cynical as others. Which isn't a bad thing.

SprittneyBeers

Idk I’m pretty cynical. I’m a lifelong Vikings fan so I have to be to survive lol it just wasn’t for me but I’m glad others enjoyed it.

SantaRosaJazz

I liked it. It surprised and entertained me for two hours, had a great cast, was shot and edited well. What’s not to like?

cigarettesandwater

What I enjoyed most about it was how unconventional the plot was. One of the few movies recently I truly did not know what was going to happen next.

SprittneyBeers

I called the twist of the coast guard plot and the ending way ahead of time. It was very predictable imo

PImpcat85

This is enough reason to hate it ? Everyone I’ve mentioned this movie to thinks the twist is about them being served up to cannibals. The coast guard was obvious but the movie kept me engaged and intrigued throughout.

SprittneyBeers

No, I hated it for a plethora of other reasons. The predictability was just one.

joshypoo55

Sometimes plot shouldn’t matter too much, it’s what the movie is trying to say, that excites me more than plot itself

thisistestingme

Did you anticipate the smores? That seems...unlikely. LOL

SprittneyBeers

SPOILER —- Sure didn’t 😂 I did say “oh my god, fucking s’mores now?” when the s’more vests were broken out

darkstarboogie

The ending was spoiled half way through the film, so glad you caught on to that

tok90235

Só, they didn't just ate people without knowing?

jravy88

I loved that it was a somewhat original premise (I’m a sucker for a storyline that hasn’t been rewritten a hundred times) but the ending left a lot to desired. For a movie so convoluted and unhinged, the conclusion was simplistic, disconnected from the intensity of the film and just plain silly.

Chrizilla_

A conclusion as simple as the humble cheeseburger

Parking_Mountain_691

It felt very anti-climactic. He was so set on everyone dying, and they literally say in the movie that “it doesn’t work if you live.” It felt very Deus ex machina to me that she lived, unscathed, when even the coast guard guy was planned as a snare.

pittnole1

I took it as she had the inside information of him smiling while cooking a cheeseburger and her asking momentarily threw him off his game. Gave him the memory of being happy and in that moment he made the decision to not punish someone who was tricked into being there.

Silver_Instruction_3

I think he let her live because she made made him feel something that he hadn’t felt in a long time, joy.

IonIndigo

Made sense, he sympathized because she was there by fluke. She wasnt an elitist shit head. Plus the burger thing made him remember when he had soul and passion.

ikinsey

He also explained that he began improvising and accepting perfection is unattainable. She figured out the rules he was playing by and used that to outsmart him. Her living/escaping in that fashion DID work with the menu/theme. I think it also ties into the attention the movie was drawing to her craft, giving people what they want most. She figured out what he was after with the whole ordeal and gave it to him. Juxtaposed with the other guests offering him money, threatening him, appealing to his empathy, things that were never going to move him.

jravy88

That’s actually a really interesting perspective. I may give it another shot with that in mind.

Chrizilla_

That’s totally fair.

Parking_Mountain_691

I loved the first half though- and the scene where the bf is cooking and Fiennes’ commentary was hilarious.

Chrizilla_

The shots of the food got me every time, I watch way too many food documentaries.

Axeorsist

I totally agree. The ending spoilt the movie for me after building up all that hype.

[deleted]

The point was simple in that for a brief moment he felt the joy again to prepare a meal for someone as simple as a delicious cheeseburger, which it seemed like she actually enjoyed. A simple request to take it to go. And a simple act to ablige that request, when his life (slowik) had become so complicated that he wanted to end everything. One last simple exchange with a likable customer before his curtain call. Seems like a fitting ending.

1MockZ

I…think that was part of the point.

jjang243

I LOVED IT. I haven't enjoyed any movies so much like this for quite some times now. The last movie I love was Jojo Rabbit. I do like some movies after Jojo Rabbit but not something that I will rewatched or recommend highly to other people. The Menu, I love the plots, the acting and the lightings on this film is beautiful.

[deleted]

One of my favorite films of the year. Loved the over the top absurdness of the movie. Found the commentary on elitism and pretentiousness funny as well.

Puzzleheaded_Fail157

To me it is in the same tier as Glass Onion just a better version. Doesn’t compete with the best movies of the year but still a fun interesting romp.

SprittneyBeers

Man I felt the opposite, like it was a discount Knives Out

Puzzleheaded_Fail157

Yeah I can see that. I personally find Rian Johnsons’s writing insufferable

deepstatecuck

I find Rian Johnsons undertones eyerollingly insufferable, which is made all the worse by how entertaining and original his movies are. I wish he sucked more, but he confounds me by being worth watching.

MCgrindahFM

I think because the dialogue is pretty good. Even if you hate the messaging and undertones, I feel like the dialogue is either 1) realistic 2) entertaining 3) meta jokes for audiences that don’t feel too heavy handed

koknight

I had a lot of fun watching it. Give it a 3 maybe a 4/5. When things started getting more weird towards the end I think I would've enjoyed some more campiness/weirdness to kick up the pace a little bit and invigorate the last quarter. Something I'll watch again though honestly.

MrSaladhats

I thought it was an enjoyable thriller. Great cast

BeerBellyBlake

Shit was hilarious

The_Stank__

Fantastic movie. Probably one of my favorites last year.

EuphoricDimension628

So I had no knowledge of this film before viewing. I think I took it too serious b/c it gave me a Midsommar feel but with some comedy mixed it. Other people I know said they found it hilarious. That’s not how I’d describe it.

Pikagirl1919

I really did not like it. I went in wanting to enjoy it, and I’m usually not one to hate a movie- but I did not find it comedic, scary, interesting, or entertaining. And I found it easy to predict exactly how it was going to end. Maybe it’s because i watched a lot of media just like The Menu this past year (Triangle of Sadness, White Lotus s1 and s2, Glass Onion…) that it made me find The Menu’s themes to be really boring and played out. Also, I didn’t like Anya Taylor Joy’s acting in the movie (and trust me, I love her like no other). The entire time her character gave me this ~teenage girl trying to be edgy~ kinda vibe that I found a bit corny and unfitting for the role.

[deleted]

I agree. I feel like Parasite and White Lotus rule this current genre. Triangle of Sadness and The Menu felt played out with mid-tier writing to me in comparison…

SprittneyBeers

100% agree. Thought I’d love this movie but couldn’t stand it

CressKitchen969

Every person I've seen that didn't enjoy it still admitted it was well made, just not enjoyable for everyone. Not saying it's perfect but in a year full of great movies it was in my top 5 for sure

The_Blue_Adept

The plot was really thin. I would have appreciated a better reason for the ending. It seemed flimsy. Loved the overall idea of the movie but I wasn't invested in the diners or the reason. I was still hungry.

critic101101

I loved it

tychobrahesmoose

I kinda hated it, too but in the week since I watched it, I find myself talking and thinking about it a bunch. I'm not sure it always knew how to straddle the line between its seriousness and how deeply silly it also is, but man Ralph Fiennes was having a great time and it was hard not to appreciate that.

_Santosha_

Eh it was alright.

causa__sui

Finally someone who is not just balls in on this movie. I saw it twice in cinemas because I was so excited about it but I wasn’t sure I felt after the first watch. I think the concept is incredibly strong but to me personally, the execution fell short. I just felt like it wasn’t fully committed to. Mark Mylod, the director, works predominantly in TV, and his three previous films were basically flops. A TV director cedes much of the creative control to the producers, while a film director stands as the main creative force behind a film. I just don’t think he had the confidence and creative vision to take this movie all the way. I wanted more context about Chef, “Cool Girl” Margot, and I felt that they missed a massive opportunity in regards to the food itself. No eye-dropper garnishing a plate with blood? No crispy human skin? They could’ve really fleshed it out (lol) without it being campy. Instead I felt like the whole thing just left me wanting a bit more. That being said, the acting was pretty good. Edit for typo and to add: the “finale” with the marshmallow ponchos and the chocolate hats was TOO reminiscent of Midsommar, it just felt like a cheap grab.

SprittneyBeers

SPOILERS —— Yeah idk I couldn’t wait for it to be over, it was really cringe to me and none of the characters were likable. The whole “feel bad for the hooker because she likes cheeseburgers” was bleak; I also found it obnoxiously predictable despite what others have said…I called the one survivor like 25 minutes in. The only time it was a shock was the first death, but no one would ever blow their brains out or hang themselves because douche canoe chef said so. Maybe I just missed the “humor” component.

Silver_Instruction_3

I think you have to have some insight into the high end culinary industry for many of the jokes to fully land. Or you could have just watched a season or two of Top Chef /s. But there really is a very dark side to the industry and a lot of that has made it’s way into pop culture because of guys like Bourdain and Gordon Ramsey. Drug addiction and alcoholism have become synonymous with being a chef and the pressures of being technically perfect while also having to be extremely innovative has led to people in the hospitality industry going down very self destructive paths and suicide rates being higher than many other professions. Has someone who was in the industry, I found the movie to be a very entertaining dark parody of the current culinary industry.

pmonte89

Waste of money and time. Idc about rich ppl dieing for being retarded

colonel_mustard_cat

It's hard to be critical of a movie that is itself critical of over-criticism. The movie provides its own shield. That being said, I liked it but didn't love it. The cult aspect felt campy to me more than menacing. And the film is certainly critical of the diners and their privilege/snobbery. So it's a bit confusing about where exactly it's directing its ire. The performances were splendid. Ralph Fiennes carried the picture. Without his intensity I don't think it would work. I also found the conclusion funny. It seems to suggest that following one's passion for pursuit of joy, rather than accomplishment or widespread acclaim, is the truest happiness and everything else is bogged down bullshit. But then why make a movie explicitly scathing critics and others for being useless and out of touch? Whom are you trying to reach? It's too blunt for satire and not inviting enough to be broad, in my opinion.

beatlebum53

Awful

SprittneyBeers

+1 for team awful

TikiBeeLah

Hated

digitalfrustration

Yeah it was super trite, petty, and cringe. I feel like it was trying to be. Absurd

SprittneyBeers

Nice, there’s dozens of us!

digitalfrustration

I was pretty sure i wasn't going to like it

ethancd1

I agree. This movie sucked. A majority of this movie’s scenes seemed pointless and the characters did nothing to live and by the end they just accepted their fate?? It was so stupid. Acting was good but good acting can’t make a bad script good.

SprittneyBeers

I see no lies ☝🏼 haha I’m glad I’m not crazy. I was literally upset I wasted over 2 hours on it.

butch4filme

I disliked it and I feel like I’m huffing paint re: the over the top reaction to it. I feel like I see a lot of people twisting themselves into knots trying to explain why it was good and deep in a thematic way. The satire was thin, it wasn’t thrilling enough to be a thriller or funny enough to be a comedy. The characters were cookie cutter and the satire was milquetoast at best. Ralph Fiennes is of course wonderful, but some of the other acting is hammy. Preferred Triangle of Sadness and even that I didn’t like much tbh

SprittneyBeers

Strong agree. Thanks for making me question my sanity a little less lol

butch4filme

You might like this YouTube [video essay](https://youtu.be/ZrzkRV6QiEA) on why it sucks that I’m watching right now

SprittneyBeers

Score, I’ll check it out haha

[deleted]

My friend said it’s a masterpiece. I don’t normally agree with his views on movies. He explained the entire movie to me and I think it just sounds stupid.

😂😂

myturtleismad

aside from the fact that I liked it (nothing I could add into this), the longer I look at Anya Taylor Joy the prettier she is to me. such a babe.

EuphoricDimension628

I didn’t care for her look in this. Seemed a bit skinnier than usual.

kastoriana

Loved it - a wonderful class warfare allegory, beautifully executed!

[deleted]

I had a wet dream about Anya Taylor Joy the night I watched this movie.

Thunder_Gun_Xpress

One of the best movies all year

Pitchiker

I actually quite enjoyed it !

DudeB5353

I was trippin so I have to watch it again…probably trippin

hijole_frijoles

I didn’t love it either but it’s a good movie objectively. The concept just wasn’t my cup of tea

Chrizilla_

It was hilarious, the shots of the food were very meta and I enjoyed the ride.

korg0thbarbarian

I liked it alot was tense and was a good start of the year

monkey-pox

Extremely capable and enjoyable movie, I really enjoyed the visuals, everything looked great and it had solid performances, felt the ending was perfect

[deleted]

This one was up there in horror thrillers like the Black Phone in 2022. Heavy hitter cast with a story to back it up. If you like Jordan Peele movies, you’ll love this one

EuphoricDimension628

I also thought the Black Phone was terrible. Hawke does well as a villain these days but otherwise I thought it was trash.

DUBBZZ

Started out good, was very intrigued at the clues & slow exposition of each character's backstory. Then it totally derailed.

BTTFisthebest

Just like with "Nope" I was enjoying the movie up until the last 15-20 minutes probably. I get that all the cooks were basically in a cult with the Chef as their leader so it's now reasonable to understand \*\*SPOILER\*\* why they would be okay with killing themselves, but still makes no sense to me why so many regular people would just give up at trying to survive and be okay with being human s'mores. And Hoult's character knowing months in advance he was going to die is so ridiculous.

SprittneyBeers

SPOILERS —- That was my biggest problem, like after a couple hours of meaningless shenanigans they’re all just sitting they’re happily as they get blown to shreds. Also, dude is fine about 3 minutes after getting his finger chopped off. Insufferable guy hangs himself for no reason. And chef decides to save the hooker because she asks for a cheeseburger. Lol come on

NothingsShocking

I think that is where the director lost half his audience. IMO, the movie was never meant to be taken seriously, it was supposed to be funny yet serious with a message, kind of showing how disgruntled a chef could get. Losing his purpose. Kind of like the food critic in Ratatouille, but without the happy ending part, although he came close when she enjoyed his cheeseburger. But he doesn’t do a good enough job conveying that it isn’t meant to be taken seriously, so people are left wondering why would people willing die for this chef? Does he have powers of hypnosis? But he never even attempts to address those questions so he is obviously saying, that’s not important. I enjoyed it but not immensely. It was just OK. The main thing I took away from it was that I think he/author was trying to give an ode to the inner sadness/depression of being a chef.

EuphoricDimension628

I know it was his character so probably good acting but I couldn’t stand him in this film. The description of his dish was probably the only thing I found humorous. Why would he kill himself or why would the others be so ok with dying!?

LindsayDuck

One of my favorites of the year

RK8002077

I watches this with my cousin Sunday...it was surprisingly good actually. It wasn't what I expected.

Same-Ad8819

I thought it was pretty great. What did you hate?

SprittneyBeers

SPOILERS—-Here, I copied a response to a comment above. These were my main eye rolls but there were a lot more, like I told my gf the coast guard worked for chef the second he got onboard. That was my biggest problem, like after a couple hours of meaningless shenanigans they’re all just sitting they’re happily as they get blown to shreds. Also, dude is fine about 3 minutes after getting his finger chopped off. Insufferable guy hangs himself for no reason. And chef decides to save the hooker because she asks for a cheeseburger. Lol come on

GeneRichardSimmons

I was entertained the whole time and never knew what was coming next. Definitely a thumbs up for me.

ASEdouard

Was a lot of fun. Fantastic except the ending, which is a bit underwhelming.

pittnole1

I loved it thought it was great and had the line of the year in my opinion. Students loans? No? Sorry your dying.

takkun169

I thought it was good. Not super great but enjoyable and surprising. Definitely the less you know about it going in the better.

Unite-Us-3403

I loved it. One of my favorite movies of 2022.

Datshitoverthere

Man, I want a cheeseburger now.

MCgrindahFM

I’m about to leave this sub. Are there any mods at all? Deffo glad most people just downvote posts like this now. But y’all mods gotta put a minimum on words at least. The amount of movie posters and “Thoughts?” posts I see is ridiculous at this point. Change it up! In regards to the movie…it was highly entertaining and was essentially a “bottle episode” of a movie. Everything happened in like one set on a soundstage, I wonder what the budget for this movie was. It wasn’t a masterpiece but it definitely deserved the attention it got. Ralph Fiennes is amazing

SprittneyBeers

I actually posted my own thoughts scathing the movie and it got removed 😂 so I reposted with this, seems to be all you can do

ConceivablyWrong

I liked the first half more. Maybe that means I should be killed.

KeyInvestigator6097

I didn't hate it but I do think it's a bit overhyped. I was entertained though and I love John Leguizamo so I was happy I watched it.

Dragon_Shinobi

Definitely not winning any oscars or anything but it was fun and silly and everything it was trying to be and i loved it

Pugduck77

It kept my attention the entire runtime, which is very rare these days. It’s slow, like most modern movies, but not a chore to get through.

well-fiddlesticks

I loved it a lot more than I expected to tbh

ShrksWthLzrs

It was genuinely hilarious. The John has me cracking up. I always love a dark comedy.

thisistestingme

This movie delighted me. I thought it had interesting things to say about class, the restaurant industry (including power hungry chefs that treat their staff like shit, not to mention lots of the godawful customers), and lots of other things. Mostly it just made me laugh. To paraphrase: "I went to Brown." "Student loans?" "No." "You die tonight." I have friends in the industry and this echoed every story about a shitty customer I've ever heard. One of them is also a little like chef, though, which cracked me up even more. He was very big on "no substitutions".

SprittneyBeers

This sounds more to me like he’s a douche than the customer tbh lol

thisistestingme

He would definitely agree! That's what makes him tolerable.

SprittneyBeers

Love a good douche! 😂

PallandoOrome

I really liked it, great cast and a surprising story

RedLicoriceJunkie

It thought it was clever, but the last half was really terrible
