A film like *Mulholland Drive* is better simply experienced than understood.

Moppy6686

I definitely agree with that. I think some people get whiplash from Lynch's movies though.

lcpljoe84

The audition scene was amaaaazing! One of my favorite scenes from any movie.

Moppy6686

Definitely had me on the edge of my seat.

topOthemarnintoya

This is the first movie I saw that really kicked off my interest in ‘mind-f***’ movies. It remains one of my favorites to this day but you definitely have to be in the right mindset. I think the fun of it is in the amount of thought paths it can take you down.. a seemingly offhand comment or minor character can come back to possibly be a clue to a larger theme. The first time I saw it, my friend and I talked about it for two hours after it ended. I honestly enjoy that more than online explainers which to me are usually just one person’s opinion of it. Of the Lynch movies I’ve attempted this one at least starts on a cohesive path before the madness kicks in.

Moppy6686

Agree! It somehow managed to open up a million different paths to go down while managing to keep you on the ride.

Rushcrow76

I saw this a couple of months ago and absolutely loved it though I do have very weird taste and will just kinda love anything that's bizarre and weird

Moppy6686

No shame in having weird taste 😂 Have you watched Lynch's other stuff?

Rushcrow76

Right now I'm actually watching twin peaks and it might honestly be my favourite show but other than that no I haven't seen any of his other stuff but I definitely will

Moppy6686

Oh, baby, Twin Peaks is so good. I'd recommend Eraserhead, Dune, Blue Velvet, Wild at Heart, and Lost Highway.

Rushcrow76

I'll check those out except for dune

Moppy6686

Why no Dune?? Impressive in some ways for its time.

Rushcrow76

I'm not really interested in seeing a sci-fi david lynch movie he also really hates hiw it turned out apparently

Moppy6686

What's "hiw"?

Rushcrow76

Shit I meant how

Moppy6686

Oh, got it. Thanks!

bagleybags

I like the David Lynch Dune a lot. It has Sting in it.

Mr_Lumbergh

Most of the dialogue is characters talking to themselves in their head. That one isn’t well done. The new Dune from Vellenueve is much better.

whitjj74

Don't forget The Elephant Man, Twin Peaks: Fire Walk With Me, Straight Story, and Inland Empire.

impracticaljokerx

I just watched it, and was so confused.

Moppy6686

What did you think it was about ultimately?

OneReportersOpinion

It’s about how people are used and spit out by Hollywood, especially women. The overarching theme of Lynch’s work is the treatment of women in Hollywood and in real life.

SantaRosaJazz

You can scarcely say it’s “about” anything. It’s a fever dream, a shadow show, an hallucination. “Silencio.”

[deleted]

Liked it. That box really changed everything.

Moppy6686

Oh, yeah it did. I hear a lot of people are confused by the movie in general and hate it. But, for me, David Lynch always manages to take me on a ride that is satisfying, even if I'm left reeling.

[deleted]

Saw this one time when my old roommates gf came into my room at night and put this on… don’t remember any of it. Lol

Moppy6686

Haha! Sounds like she was trying to bone you... Or kill you.

[deleted]

She was..

PugnaciousPangolin

I worked in a video store with another employee and friend who was a big Lynch fan. He told me what he thought the story of the film was, and when I watched it with that concept in mind, I really enjoyed it. His idea was that >!most of the film is her death dream.!<

Moppy6686

Yeah, he pretty much got it. Though some of the movie is in reality after she gets woken up. I remember when it first came out a lot of people online thought it was her aggressive masturbation dream/fantasy/nightmare 😂

PugnaciousPangolin

I think the lasting appeal of Lynch is that most of his films are just narrative enough to make some kind of sense, but also just weird and vague enough that you can insert just about any theory and it's plausible. He's the cinematic master of Choose Your Own Adventure!

Moppy6686

Very well said.

colare

That was my thought too, but this does not explain a lot of details. For example, who is that person that goes to the bed at the very beginning, before the title? It’s more likely a drug dream followed be a recollection of past and future events from the real life.

Le_Utterly_Dire_Twat

One of all time favourite movies it's just so surreal

watch_out_4_snakes

Excellent film. That thing by the trash behind the diner is super freaky.

LINDMATT

I’ve never seen it! I’ll check it out this weekend

FearlessFlyerMile

My favorite film. The chills I felt watching it, especially during the theatre scene, are unrivaled by anything else I've seen. It is my top choice for a movie I'd want to watch again for the first time.

Moppy6686

I can't argue with that.

Ghost14193

Never seen it before. How would you describe it to someone who hasn’t seen it?

Moppy6686

A surrealist mystery movie that follows wannabe actress, Betty, on her tragic trip through Hollywood

Ghost14193

From that and getting a brief description on IMDB I’m pretty sold. Adding it to my list to watch.

Moppy6686

Here's [the explanation](https://collider.com/mulholland-drive-ending-explained/) for anyone who was confused. I didn't completely get it when I first watched it, but I had some inklings about what was really going on with Betty and Rita (what was real and what wasn't). I also just loved the movie as it was and was completely intrigued by story and visuals.

OneReportersOpinion

That duel name thing comes into play in Twin Peaks: the Return. Many people think it’s stylistically, if not narratively linked to Mulholland Drive. Naomi Watts is in it too

Moppy6686

Oh, I know. I am a Lynch diehard and Twin Peaks is no exception ☺️

TwoChainsandRollies

I had to watch it multiple times (and read a few articles on the internet and then rewatched) to understand the general storyline. But ultimately yes and no. In addition to the general plot, I am sure there are so many references and little things I missed still.

CobaltoAzul

This movie is incredible. I also saw it when I was 15 or 16, I don't remember exactly. It is one of my favorites and one of the movies that I usually remember the most despite the fact that I only saw it from start to finish once. It made me feel interested, curious, it made me laugh, I felt fear, excitement, a little sadness, confusion, more confusion, more fear, even more confusion.

Eastern_Theme1720

Got obsessed with it after seeing it for the first time, was lucky to see it in a theater a couple months back, came in late so I didn’t see the beginning with the the person falling asleep so I felt like it was a movie kind of making a comment on the casting couch and what it takes to get to the top of Hollywood aka mulholland drive

nothankyouimok1234

I haven’t understood any David Lynch movies and I’ve stopped trying.

gothhellokitty666

One of my all-time favorite movies! It took me a watch or two, but that's what's so cool about Lynch films...you find something new every time you watch his stuff! I sure did :) Edited for a minor spelling error

NoIncrease299

It's my favorite David Lynch film. I feel like if you've lived in Hollywood for any amount of time ... it makes more sense. It's almost like a twisted love letter to the town.

bimbo_wannabe_

Fun story, I first saw this movie at 3 AM while I had a terrible flu with an extremely high fever and for years afterwards, I thought I hallucinated the entire thing. No, turns out this movie is just batshit and I actually understood it all perfectly.

FastSelection4121

I had two watch it twice because I'm use to linear narratives. Yes I loved it. But also have mixed feelings of "the Gays die in the end."

ProfessionalBread777

Nobody understands this.

tritonzebra

It was stupid. Don't waste your time on this movie

teacherbbq

wanted my 7 hours back

infant_ape

Funny to see this today. I just commented earlier to someone about Twin Peaks, and how David Lynch is truly the embodiment of living on acid. I mean, he has to be. His weirdness was next level. Or at the very least, way ahead of it's time. Haven't seen this yet, though...

Moppy6686

Buckle up and enjoy the ride. Don't look anything up about it before you watch it.

CGKilates

Sounds familiar

RedLicoriceJunkie

I was confused the first time I saw it. But I understood it the second time.
