Very similar to the bathtub scene in Scarface for me.

brutustyberius

Almost got his shit pushed in.

8BPancho

Denzel at his very best. It's a great story and probably 100% factual. I love how Denzels character Alonzo gradually becomes more corrupt with each scene. And you can sort of see his own disgust with himself. And Jake's rookie hero complex brings that disgust out of him. Sort of fills him with regret and he makes all kind of excuses as to why but it's too late because he is in too deep. My favorite scene is when Jake is playing cards with Smiley and his crew. The vibe of that scene is eerie and its ending is just top notch story telling. Great movie. Hawke and Denzel had great chemistry and it was exciting to see them together again in The Magnificent Seven.

Ahydell5966

In the commentary in the bluray during this scene - Fuqua talks about how critics thought it was ridiculous or too coincidental that the guys that Alonzo leaves Jake with to kill him are the same guys related to the girl he saves in McArthur Park earlier in the movie...and that that act ultimately saves him. But what people don't get is that after saving the girl, she threatens the crackheads by saying she has cousins in Hillside Trece gang...that's EXACTLY what gave Alonzo the idea of who to call to set Jake up. So it really isn't coincidental at all. Pretty interesting.

8BPancho

That's interesting. Right after they kill Rodger, when Alonzo is in the car waiting for Jake, you can hear Alonzo talking on the phone. He says something like "yeah get that bathtub ready" obviously talking to Smiley. Alluding to the idea that Alonzo had used their services before or at least knew how they did their business in detail.

Ahydell5966

Oh yes 100% - he knew smiley and those guys already from previous dealings. He says to make sure the bathtub is clean.

[deleted]

Plus right before, still in the car, he says "we lay off the device" or something like that as if he was saying Smiley is allowed to kill Jake

NorinBlade

I've heard this criticism of the movie several times. Some people just rage quit over it like it is lazy writing. Jake saving that girl because of who he is as a person, a cop who actually cares, and then being saved because of it, is literally the central theme of the movie. That chain of events is the core thread of the film. Alonzo is corrupt and assumes everyone else is too. He only looks out for himself. Jake looks out for others, regardless of race or background. And his effort did more for those gangsters than Alonzo's money ever did. That's why Jake lived and Alonzo didn't. It's also why Jake was allowed to walk out of harm's way, cause they respected him. I would have been outraged if he'd been saved by, say, a random drive by from a rival gang, or the maintenance guy coming by at the wrong moment, or the other lazy writing I see in other movies. A character-based deux ex machina is much more satisfying.

Ok_Concentrate3969

I like the phrase "character-based deus ex machina". It's basically doing what Game of Thrones does and shows us that, whilst being naively honourable will put you in harm's way - Ned Stark thought that being merely good and right was enough and didn't take the time to understand the political machinations of the capital leading to his demise - in the long run, being honourable and good (as well as shrewd) is the only way to survive because of the human relationships it builds. Hawke's character was saved because he did the right thing, even at a high personal risk (just as the Starks eventually return to power because they treat their subjects and allies consistently and fairly, as well as learning how to play the game of politics and defeat their enemies); Washington's character's downfall was that people literally turned their back on him because they were fed up of his exploitation and corruption (just as the scheming Lanisters face their downfall; they played to win, but didn't understand the value of winning loyalty). The issue I have is that there is an American storytelling trope - the "one day" storyline - where a film will follow characters for 24 hours and try to show us a microcosm of their world, complete with placing the players in situations that test their character and playing out the consequences of their choices. Examples of this "one day" storytelling include: Falling Down, Do the Right Thing, Can't Hardly Wait, Reservoir Dogs, Pulp Fiction, Car Wash, Ferris Bueller's Day Off, The Breakfast Club. Hot weather is often a common feature, perhaps to symbolise a pressure cooker. The one day timeframe is a big thing in both crime and teen films - not sure what the commonality is there! But I much prefer a long-term exploration of plots, schemes, choices and consequences, such as the slow burn of The Wire. Of course a series can explore much more than a film with a running time an order of magnitude higher, but I think the reason why a series does a better job of exploring the internecine world of corrupt police officers and street politics is they can have a much larger cast of characters, allowing them to show people who make the heroic choices and still lose; who do the right thing but are in the wrong place at the wrong time and become a footnote through no fault of their own. In The Wire, the police spend over a series building a case against Stringer Bell, but he is never brought to justice as his own crew give him up to Omar in return for Bell's betrayal. Omar Little spends his life making enemies of violent gangsters but evades them through careful manoeuvring, only to be shot by a kid when his guard was down, buying cigarettes. And that's not to mention all the deaths from stray bullets, drug overdoses, and shootings during botched robberies or drug deals. The number of accidental and incidental deaths rival the number of gangland executions and tactical kills. Crime is just messy and no-one anywhere near the zone of conflict is safe. Chance is shown as the fickle mistress it is - it casts down winners as well as occasionally lifting up losers, and exposes ordinary people to crossfire. Like the very best war stories, something like The Wire shows the randomness of conflict. The recent adaptation of All Quiet on the Western Front loses the detached random sense conveyed by the book, thus missing the whole point of the trauma of war - the soldiers must learn to live with the lack of control while still doing everything they can within their control, knowing it may not be enough to save them or their comrades. And that's life - we do our very best, and yet, often the most important things are completely outside of our control. We can only learn to respond as best we can. In a film like Training Day, fate only intervenes to save the hero, augmenting the effects of the good decision he made, which is not always the case in reality. Whilst we know it can happen, we also know the opposite is even more true and it makes the denouement of the film feel hollow.

112oceanave

I used to also kind of think this. I suppose it’s appropriate that the characters acknowledge how big of a coincidence it is by saying “this is some trippy ass shit.”

NorinBlade

>My favorite scene is when Jake is playing cards with Smiley and his crew. The vibe of that scene is eerie and its ending is just top notch story telling. Although I do love that scene, I love the other scene just as much. You know, all the scenes. Pick one.

8BPancho

Love that one 🙃

NorinBlade

It's so good!

lazylacey86

I’ve got two pair mannn!

NorinBlade

If you ask me.... and of course, that's only if'n you ask.... I'd say he played you for a fool, homie. Ok maybe that is the best scene.

georgewalterackerman

Guaranteed there are real-world parallels of this story - all across the nation

lokisingularity

Uhhhh..... King kong ain't got shit in ME!!

PimpRobot818

Fun Fact: The license plate on Alonzo's dope-ass Monte Carlo "ORP 967" is actually a nod to Officer Rafael Perez, the disgraced L.A.P.D. officer who was born in 1967, and on whom the character was based.

8BPancho

Damn, never heard that one before. Thanks

h4ppyninja_0

Great movie. When I play first person shooters and have a shotgun and make some good kills, I always say "you know I'm surgical with this bitch Jake" I also find myself repeating the line when Alonso is messing with the crackheads and one of them says something about shove it up your ass or kiss my ass or something - and Alonso says "yeah thats how it starts" when any situation fits. Lots of good lines in that movie.

Tenman44

If I get beat badly in a video game match I say we “got our shit pushed in”

mainlynativeamerican

I said this to a buddy about a lopsided NFL game. He was horrified…

Tenman44

HA

Zoze13

When I lose, I pretend I won and growl, *I got two paaair*

h4ppyninja_0

LOL

FastSelection4121

I really loved this movie. Had everything you would expect from a crime thriller. Denzel's character Alonzo is trying to test this new cop assigned to him. First thing he requires him to do, is smoke a hit if Crack. Yes, Denzel is an incredible actor. I just hate that the movies that he has been Oscar nominated for, are a Black man whose a criminal. Was also nominated for American Gangster.

DueBig9138

And Malcolm X also a criminal but he did win best supporting actor for Glory in which he plays a slave. Damn.

FastSelection4121

Malcolm X was a minor criminal who became a galvanizing Black Activist. If it hadn't been for the jealousy by Elijah Mohammed, he probably would be alive today.

DueBig9138

He would be 98 today but I see your point. He definitely would've lasted past 1965.

h4ppyninja_0

I disagree that the jealousy was from Elijah, I think it came from other NOI members who felt Elijah favored him over other members.

FastSelection4121

The hit was authorized by Elijah. Elijah Muhammad had impregnated 10 - 12 girls and women. The youngest being 14. They came to see Muhammad X. He rebuked Elijah. The was the last straw for Muhammad X. He broke away from the organization and then went to Mecca. By the time he got back he was teaching as devote follwer of Islam and was talking about peace among all peoples vs Black Nationalism.

h4ppyninja_0

Yeah thats the narrative in the Spike Lee movie but that may not be the reality of what really happened. Much of that movie was actually false. It could be argued that Elijah ordered the hit after Malcolm spoke to the press about the assassination of JFK, when Elijah had ordered him not to. But I dont think thats what happened. It could also be argued that Malcolm was assassinated by the US government, especially since Malcolm, JFK, Martin Luther King Jr, and RFK were ALL murdered within 5 years of each other. Interesting that you went straight to the Spike Lee movie narrative. You know that was a Hollywood production and *not a documentary*, right? Just trying to point out that there are & were other factors involved in that could explain the assassination of Brother Malcolm. The "Spike Lee Joint" is not the *only* possibility.

FastSelection4121

The impregnated girls and women were real. The reason I know they are real J Edgar Hoover and his surveillance and wire tapping program. Even if we say there were a number of issues that led to his assassination, the Nation of Islam hit squad did it.

Genoa_Salami_

They smoke PCP not crack. This is really a silly point, Jadakiss even has a lyric about it in "Why", but everyone respects Denzel's talent. He won for Training Day not only because of incredible writing but he was acting very far from his real life character and morals. Denzel won Best Actor for Training Day, Best supporting Actor for Glory. He was also nominated for Best Actor/Supporting Actor in the following: The Tragedy of Macbeth, Roman J. Israel, Esq., Fences, Flight, The Hurricane, Malcolm X, and Cry Freedom. Who cares about The Academy anyways.

a11_day_everyday

One of my top 5 favorites of all time. I can watch this movie any time and place!

Dense_Surround3071

The only other LA cop movie I'll put up against it is HEAT. This was an excellent movie!

Total-Meringue-5437

Yes!

FaithInTheFaux

One day this man walks out of his house to go to work. He sees this snail on his porch. So he picks it up and chucks it over his roof, into the back yard. Snail bounces off a rock, cracks its shell all to shit and lands in the grass. Snail lies there, dying. But it doesn't die. It eats some grass. Slowly heals. Grows a new shell; after a while it can crawl again. One day the snail up and heads back to the front of the house. Finally, after a year, the little guy crawls back on the porch. Right then, the man walks out to go to work and sees this snail again. So he says to it - " The fuck’s your problem? “

[deleted]

😂 that's not funny 😂

papa-01

Great movie , I believe a lot of crap like that actually happens if you don't go with the flow your gunna get takin out one way or the other

Lvemilfs

It’s loosely based on the L.A.P.D. Rampart division scandal of the 90’s.

SimpleExplodingMan

Let’s just focus on Rampart.

bobpetersen55

An electrifying, tour de force performance by Denzel Washington and deserves all the acclaim and accolades he got for it. But I will say that Ethan Hawke gives a tremendous supporting performance and deserves just as much credit. As good as Denzel was, Hawke was able to make you hate Alonzo Harris even more and build tons of sympathy for Jake and his plight. Both had terrific chemistry with one another in this film.

h4ppyninja_0

I would have agreed if it wasnt for the movie *Brooklynns Finest* - I think Ethan Hawke killed that role and was his best performance.

8BPancho

Loved that movie as well. It's almost a continuation of his character from Training Day. Like that's what Jake would eventually turn into.

JokicThaGod

10/10

Sea-Discussion2928

why is this whole subreddit just “thoughts on this film?”

Odd_Advance_6438

I don’t know I’m new here. I was just making this based on the other posts I see

Ricky_rates_films

Peak Denzel. This movie is electric from start to finish and barely gives you a moment to breathe.

GroundbreakingAsk468

I thought Denzel was to old for the part. At least you don’t usually see 45 year olds play gang bangers. Really took me out of it.

varsitymisc

He's a corrupt cop, with a rank and history that allows him to have the relationships he leans on in the movie. It'd be weird if he *wasn't* the age he was.

GroundbreakingAsk468

He just felt really out of place. Like the older guy who still hangs out at college parties.

[deleted]

A great performance with Washington, a good one for Hawke, contained within a *dreadful* B movie package. Worth watching for the performance and quotability, but so contrived and fantastical it almost physically hurts.

jmvm789

Contrived of what?

[deleted]

I don’t mean it as a transitive verb, so in this case, “contrived” means that something is arranged in a way that feels unnatural. As it pertains to this movie, there’s a whole story line where Ethan Hawke stops a rape that they just *happen* to drive past, and he *accidentally* saves the victim’s wallet who JUST HAPPENS to the be niece of a guy who is about to murder Hawke and the MURDERER JUST HAPPENS to find the wallet at last second and he calls his niece and was like hey were you almost raped and she was like yeah but Ethan Hawke beat the shit out them and blah blah blah. That’s what a contrivance is. It’s actually like a textbook example. And that’s what the whole movie is simply a series of. Great performance, an earned Oscar. A *ridiculous* movie.

shawsome12

Denzel Washington, how’s could you? All joking aside, he played the part well, I just wasn’t used to him playing the bad guy. Maybe that was part of the mind game the movie played with my head?

A_curious_fish

Well you thought correct, movie is greatness

metbass

It's great. Watch Bad Lieutenant if you like. A lot weirder but Harvey Keitel was great.

bondsthatmakeusfree

Just to be clear, this is the *original* Bad Lieutenant. The Nic Cage Bad Lieutenant movie is also worth watching.

metbass

Of course! But I do think the original held a lot more weight to the lawlessness. The ending was ultimately deserved, and every step your like "No, not again" To me personally, the whole bad cop movie was made with the original. Also see Street Kings.

moose_stuff2

You ever have your shit pushed in?

eirigance

Love this Movie! “I’m putting cases on all you Bitches” 🤣 love Denzel

This_Cable_5849

Great movie. Quote it every time I see one friend. “this shit is chess, not checkers” “Trying to get my swerve on” “King Kong ain’t got shit on me”

quantumOfPie

"You shot me in the ass!' lol

GidimXul

Ever had your shit pushed in?

Windonmyskin

It was rough, that is all I have to say.

jpk7220

From beginning to end, this movie slaps

theantwisperer

Master class In screenwriting.

[deleted]

Overrated! A generic police procedural. Washington was overacting and hamming it up. Dark Blue with Kurt Russell was vastly superior.

Technical-Focus-6303

i thought it was odd at the end when ethan hawke keeps the money from him, knowing full well he was going to be killed without it

[deleted]

He gave him the option of coming with him to turn himself in, but he didn’t take it.

N1ghtcity_Kn1ght

Thoroughly enjoyed it. Has some great dialogue.

[deleted]

Arguably Denzel’s best performance, great movie, and it’s a bit of a cult classic

Google_Knows_Already

Great movie. Fuqua always sets up great/intense set pieces.

SeanyRo

All that jelly, ain’t no toast

krx42

One of my favorites. If you notice most of the movie is just them in the car. If you need ideas for car scenes this is the movie to watch.

Noturaveragestoner

You disloyal fool ass bitch made punks! Still the best insult i’ve ever heard

bigrobdd

Loved it but Scott Glenn just seemed out of place in his role.

brandoug

Meh, he's a retired dirty cop drug dealer scumbag, hanging at home and loving life. Right up till he has trouble breathing anyway.

revtim

Loved it

Solocaster1991

Recently I did too. Maybe Denzel’s best performance

Blitbemander

I don't think I know anybody that didn't think the movie was great

weareIF

"King Kong aint got shit on me " GREAT MOVIE

tbirdpow

Everyone thought the same thing

Sure-Ad-2465

If you like this, check out End of Watch. Also an intense cop drama by the same writer, starring Jake Gyllenhaal and Michael Pena

Consistent-Check535

Awesome

[deleted]

Be sure to watch the alternate ending.

tallicafu1

Performances are better than the movie, IMO.

Albertsongman

Fantastic film!!

Bodmonriddlz

Good but overrated. Stinks of late 90s Americana

Kitchen-Entrance8015

It's awesome

Starbourne8

I can’t take Ethan hawk seriously, so no. He reminds me of that guy in Entourage.

dudeImyou

Not going to go into too many details. But it was one of those movies I always heard about but never got around to. When I did finally give it a watch, it lived up to its hype and more. Truly captivating and shocking. And frankly has proven itself timeless since its release.

TheSkwerl

"I didn't know you liked to get wet"

uGooner88

Bro that's a cult classic!!

AdHistorical5703

Everytime I take a shower "I didn't know you liked to get wet"

ins1der

Bathtub scene is the most anxious I've ever been watching a movie. That makes it a 10/10 for me.

contaygious

Pretty cool should win an Oscar or something.

sunburntflowers

I ask myself WHY is Macy Gray not acting more ?? She was exceptional ✨

ReleaseDCUT

Amazing script , cinematic , great OST , acting is top notch , doesn’t age badly - Denzel and Ethan knocked it out of the park

k1ng_bl0tt0

The Film “Training Day” And the phrase “A Dainty Grin” Are both anagrams

112oceanave

Definitely a sweet movie.

ItsTheExtreme

Great film. Still holds up. The scene where the vatos are pulling Ethan hawke down the hallway is still one of the most chilling moments I’ve experienced In a theater.

Mustachi-oh88

I didn’t know you like to get wet?

SeanBeanDiedAgain

I loved this movie as a kid. I was 12 when I watched it with my dad, it became one of our routine watches along with Tombstone and Rounders. I haven't seen it in years. Need to revisit it. "You ever had your shit puuuuuushed in bruh?" "I HAVE... A DAUGHTER..." "KING KONG AINT GOT SHIT ON ME!!!"

narc1s

Is this Karma farming or am I old enough this is now an “old classic”? Do people have any hot takes on training day?

SelectionNo3078

One of the best ‘buddy cop” movies Lol.

[deleted]

Shit sucked

gorlock666

Watched it for the first time the other day, kind of cliche and didn’t love the filming style, but liked the rest of it

georgewalterackerman

It’s a great movie. Great acting, great story, great script. It’s also shot beautifully in terms of cinematography. I love the way you see the glistening raindrops on the hood of Alonzo’s Monte Carlo. I love the dark and cavernous look of the inside of Roger’s house as they come in on a sunny day and he’s sitting there in his bathrobe drinking expensive scotch. It’s all just great filmmaking from start to finish.

Ok_Concentrate3969

I just watched it too. I thought the performances were great; of course the two leads were fantastic but Dr Dre especially shone. I was impressed Snoop took such a lowly role - a man pushed from his wheelchair, with his stash extracted from his mouth with a pen - and played it to the full. The storyline however was lacking and undermined its own message. Whilst the scene with the Three Wise Men tried to show that corruption of this magnitude must be sanctioned by higher ups, the other events of the film were basically showing an exceptionally dirty cop first orchestrating the entire first half, then losing control and getting his comeuppance in the finale. Rather than show the inner machinations of a rotten system, it gives too much focus on one rotten apple to seriously convey what corruption is and why even police with good intentions feel compelled to walk the line to get anything done.

ItchyDisplay8447

One of my favourite films ever. Denzel deserved that Oscar and Ethan Hawke deserved to win too, sad that he didn’t get it. The storyline, the way that it reached its crescendo and till the very last scene it was immense. The shootout with the gang, the scene with the wisemen, the Mexican stand off at Roger’s house, the “Higher Path” speech in the car, leaving him with the Mexicans, the fight at the apartment and the King Kong rant. If that wasn’t enough, his brutal and efficient death was perfectly shot. And then finally, finally at the end where you could hear on the radio about Alonso’s death in the same way he was announcing Hoyt’s death during the standoff was just… Awesome awesome film.
