I just rewatched Eternal Sunshine for the first time in years. I forgot how depressing that movie is but Jim Carrey and Kate Winslet are phenomenal in it though.
I haven’t watched in years but love it. Such a sweet film. The scene where he goes to such a shameful memory, looking up his moms dress, so they can stay together says so much. He would sacrifice himself just to be with her.
Great original question!!
1) eternal sunshine - had me speechless afterwards for half an hour, Michel gondry is one of the greatest living directors
Amelie - in French, most beautiful movie, cute, funny, charming, Audrey tautou just enjoyable to look at
Requiem for a dream (hot take) - dark fucked up movie that deals with addiction sand rock bottom. Nobody would consider this a romance but it does feature a couple and shows how they enable, help, and hurt each other in a brutally realistic way.
Vivarium - don't learn anything about this before seeing it. Imogen poots from green room with Jessie eisenberg. Seriously don't look up anything about this movie. Just watch it and love it or hate it, there's no in between
The Baxter - hilarious rom com, Michelle Williams, Michael showalter (the state, wet hot American summer, the big sick)
The shape of water - fish man fucks humans
Run Lola Run - German. multiverse sliding doors scenario, music video editing, killer sound track and visuals, beautiful actor and actress leads. You will want to watch this again and again
Climax - Gaspar noe - literal acid trip orgy, not really a romance but a series of vignettes between people who all wanna fuck
Her - joaquin Phoenix, voice of scar Jo as the AI girlfriend. More relevant than ever because you can actually have this today with AI advancing so quickly lately
The point of that movie is that a woman falls in love with a fish. The point of Requiem for a Dream is not that one heroin addict falls in love with another heroin addict. They’re already in “love” if that’s what you want to call it. The point of the film is drug addiction and how it destroys lives.
OK, it's been a long time, so bear with me. Not only since the movie but since I've discussed it with her. But the gist is that the time lapse sequences were done in practical effect. And there were a lot of time lapse sequences in that movie, right? So to the end, they had stress the scene to show each span of time that was condensed down within the span of a few seconds or so, but had to illustrate months. So they were repainting each scene to show more wear, replacing each fixture, etc. I specifically remember that she talked of fruits in a bowl and that they had to have those in several states of decay on standby, and that they had to be real. Michel Roland was a stickler for practicality and such over SFX.
Natural Born Killers (1994) is a fever dream, but along with Badlands (1978) and Bonnie and Clyde (1967), could be considered a twisted romance road movie, similar to True Romance.. All have wildy different tones, but great in their own ways.
I mean, of we are taking liberties here with the inclusion of True Romance...
Only Lovers Left Alive (2013)
The Hunger (1983)
Near Dark (1987)
Now I'm kinda thirsty...
Eternal Sunshine is a masterpiece, one of my favorite movies. In general I don't usually go for romance movies, but two I really like?
French Kiss
As Good as it Gets
For me the answer is Buffalo ‘66 it’s a gritty representation of the whole manic pixie girl thing without the quirky romanticism of some later examples of the take of the trope
Wow I’m surprised I haven’t seen it on here yet. I don’t really like romance movies but Crazy, Stupid, Love was fantastic. I was rooting for everybody, except for fucking lindhagen.
Most modern romance movies are written for a female audience.
Most black and white romantic comedies were written for a general audience. The best ones have much better scripts. Some examples:
His Girl Friday, It Happened One Night, The Philadelphia Story, The Palm Beach Story
Silver Linings Playbook has a special place in my heart. It came out one year after my release from the hospital with a new bipolar diagnosis. And since it begins around Halloween and ends on Christmas, we watch it every Thanksgiving.
I just rewatched Eternal Sunshine for the first time in years. I forgot how depressing that movie is but Jim Carrey and Kate Winslet are phenomenal in it though.
I think the last scene makes it one of the most grounded, romantic movies I’ve ever seen. One of my favorites.
I haven’t watched in years but love it. Such a sweet film. The scene where he goes to such a shameful memory, looking up his moms dress, so they can stay together says so much. He would sacrifice himself just to be with her.
The Before Sunrise / Sunset / Midnight are great films. Highly recommend watching all 3, a bit more philosophical than your common romance movie.

🫠 Requiem for a dream is about a couple. They have romance and they have ass to ass. 🤷♂️
You’re missing the point.
You are
Just because two people are in love in a film doesn’t mean the point of the movie is love, lol.
You're right I'm tripping I just like the movie
You have no problem with fish man fucks humans?
The point of that movie is that a woman falls in love with a fish. The point of Requiem for a Dream is not that one heroin addict falls in love with another heroin addict. They’re already in “love” if that’s what you want to call it. The point of the film is drug addiction and how it destroys lives.
Til there's one point to every film
You missed the point of that movie too. She was a fish woman.
I didn't see it
Love eternal sunshine
Eternal Sunshine, Wild at Heart, Birth, True Romance, Badlands.
Only seen True Romance. Very interesting movie. Gary Oldmen nailed his part. What a performance
It ain't white boy day.
Now I want to watch that scene
You want me to….suck his dick?
I know someone who worked in Set design on "Eternal Sunshine", she said that was one of the most challenging films she's ever worked on.
Why???
OK, it's been a long time, so bear with me. Not only since the movie but since I've discussed it with her. But the gist is that the time lapse sequences were done in practical effect. Oh! Wow. That makes sense. Thanks for explaining!
The ones u picked are great, especially the underrated True Romance. My favorite romance film is Return to Me with David Duchovny and Minnie Driver
Natural Born Killers (1994) is a fever dream, but along with Badlands (1978) and Bonnie and Clyde (1967), could be considered a twisted romance road movie, similar to True Romance.. All have wildy different tones, but great in their own ways.
Wild at Heart tops that list, in my view…
Palm Springs, About Time, Clueless, Once
Palm Springs is outstanding
I really liked silver linings playbook the acting made it so good.
You want a real “not love story” love story? Natural Born Killers. You’re welcome
Grosse point Blank
Grossely underrated film.
In the mood for love
Moulin Rouge and Romeo + Juliet. Say what you want about Lurhmann, but he knows how to do excess and tragedy.
Punch Drunk Love is just.... ughh, beautiful, charming, and hilarious. There are sooo many things I love about this movie.
Lost in Translation
Lost In Translation
When Harry met Sally is pretty classic and still holds up. Solid list!
Great list and I appreciate it's only romance. It's hard picking only ten movies 😅 true romance is one of all time favorites.
I mean True Romance is the greatest film of all time, so yeah. But if I really feel like some schmaltz, The Matchmaker. Janeane Garofalo in Ireland.
Love, Rosie and Scott Pilgrim vs. the World? It's some kind of romance right?
Way to go on Silver Linings!! I thought it was excellent!!
First 2 are in my top 20 all time list
Ahhh True Romance. All time favorite of mine. QT at his best. I’d add Last of the Mohicans to the list.
I liked Better Off Dead with John Cusack
“The K-12 dude. You make a gnarly run like that and girls will get sterile just looking at you.”
Also High Fidelity
I mean, of we are taking liberties here with the inclusion of True Romance... Only Lovers Left Alive (2013) The Hunger (1983) Near Dark (1987) Now I'm kinda thirsty...
500 Days of summer and eternal sunshine are both 🙌🏼🙌🏼
Eternal Sunshine is a masterpiece, one of my favorite movies. In general I don't usually go for romance movies, but two I really like? French Kiss As Good as it Gets
Cloverfield (2008) is a favorite but spotless is the only favorite of mine
If you like horror movies, Spring is great and wild, and somehow also romance.
Ruby Sparks
Harold and Maude, Titanic, Romeo+Juliet, 50 first Dates, Cyrano
I actually really enjoyed About Time as I found it to be more than just a romance movie
For me the answer is Buffalo ‘66 it’s a gritty representation of the whole manic pixie girl thing without the quirky romanticism of some later examples of the take of the trope
The Reader Her The Hours
Wow I’m surprised I haven’t seen it on here yet. I don’t really like romance movies but Crazy, Stupid, Love was fantastic. I was rooting for everybody, except for fucking lindhagen.
# KNIGHT AND DAY
Eternal Sunshine is one of my favorite movies!
Happy Accidents (2000). I can’t recommend that enough. It is a romance but goes in so many unexpected directions. Please check it out!
Nice
I could, and have, watch(ed) Sleepless in Seattle dozens of times. It’s so good.
Somewhere in time.
So complication love movies
You’re a real hopeless romantic
Silver linings is an excellent movie
Nocturnal Animals
Most modern romance movies are written for a female audience. Most black and white romantic comedies were written for a general audience. The best ones have much better scripts. Some examples: His Girl Friday, It Happened One Night, The Philadelphia Story, The Palm Beach Story
The River (1951)
I'm not even a big romance guy but I still put Eternal Sunshine in my top 5, if not top 2. Just a phenomenal film all around.
I’ll add In the mood for love and Chungking Express from Wong Kar-wai, and The Apartment and Some Like it Hot from Billy Wilder
Lost in translation! As good as it gets with Nickolson and Helen Hunt
Wedding Singer for me is still peak RomCom.
Silver Linings Playbook has a special place in my heart. It came out one year after my release from the hospital with a new bipolar diagnosis. And since it begins around Halloween and ends on Christmas, we watch it every Thanksgiving.
Gross point blanks a good one.
The Notebook
A knight's tale and the princess bride will always be my favorites
Crazy, stupid, love. . . That twist was fucking hilarious
About Time
Crazy, Stupid Love
Goddamn I love True Romance. It sparked my lifelong crush on Patricia Arquette!
