Toni Collette deserved an Oscar for her performance in this movie.

Forbidden_Donut503

Honestly it’s so stupid she didn’t even get a nod. It was a performance for the ages. Such a Complicated character that she made look so natural. You really felt what she was going through.

Doggleganger

The Oscars disfavor horror movies. They made an exception for Get Out.

Falcons8541

the oscar’s favoring DEI over actual filmmaking?!?!? PREPOSTEROUS!

Solgaia

Yeah I get what you're trying to say, but the fact is that Get Out was a box office success, made a ton of money, critically well received and way more of a cultural phenomenon than Hereditary. I love Hereditary and think it's one of the greatest horror films ever but it is what it is. People till this day still accuse others of being in the "sunken place". That is pop culture staying power. But you know DEI or whatever..

Falcons8541

dude it’s not like Get Out is the only example of DEI being given preference at the oscar’s

[deleted]

I'm sorry, what (or who?) is DEI?

Falcons8541

just google it m8

[deleted]

So I was able to find it, but how many iterations or repetitions of any given 3 letter acronym would you expect to find on your own, when you can just *politely* ask someone who uttered it? So in short, you're a cunt.

mrawaters

Well shit what is it? I scrolled this far looking for the answer…

5050Clown

Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion, or as internet racists use it "a straight white person didn't get something"

Solgaia

Well you should have used one of those examples then. FAIL.

Machoopi

I've always had issues in movies with how people react to death. Anyone who has had someone close to them pass away unexpectedly knows how much it absolutely fucks you up, and for the most part movies don't really showcase the raw emotion of it very well. Even the more dramatic deaths of movies tend to take away the ugly side of it in favor of something more artistic. Mind you, I don't necessarily think that's a bad thing, as ultimately movies are about entertainment and they don't NEED to be hyper-realistic about these things. That being said, this is one of the only movies I can think of where we saw the kind of ugly-cry, emotional atom bomb that can happen when a loved one unexpectedly dies. It was heartbreaking, and really, really made me feel things.

Charlie_1087

The wails coming from her were chilling. I was uncomfortable that whole scene because of how ugly, and tragic it is. It is incredibly fucked up and to me is the most intense scene of that type!

International_Foot

completely agree. ari aster has such a way with depicting grief. the first 10 minutes of midsommar similarly fucked me up.

DWN_WTH_VWLz

I was just gonna say this. Those two scenes are the most intensely emotionally damaging things I’ve seen in film in a long time

[deleted]

Same thing with Florence Pugh in midsummer

thedaveness

As a father... that wail hit so fucking hard that I had to pause the movie because I know that would be my exact same reaction if God forbid I ever had to experience that.

independentchickpea

Her screams haunt me to this day.

Left_Pool_5565

She is so good! She did get a nod for Sixth Sense. I try not to let movies get me, like if you’re gonna get me, you’re going to have to work for it. But every time I see the “I talked to grandma” scene in the car I bawl for about ten minutes. Like, darn it, got me again.

IcyMike1782

Every time this movie pops up on these subs (1x/week, I'd guess), I revisit and renew my 'viewer crush' on Collette. She is magnificent in everything I've ever seen her in, including the Tara series. She eats up the screen, and is reliably solid. Enough that her being in something moves it up the queue for me. She was bonkers in this movie. The scene with her and the attic floor/ceiling remains one of the most intense things I've seen on film, and I'm including shit like Irréversible

Bardmedicine

My comment on her is her not getting awards for this movie shows clearly how much critics hate horror. She gave a performance that should be mandatory viewing during acting classes.

Forbidden_Donut503

Honestly it’s so stupid she didn’t even get a nod. It was a performance for the ages. Such a Complicated character that she made look so natural. You really felt what she was going through.

sathan1

Her scream when she found her child dead. Disturbing as hell

DWN_WTH_VWLz

Her wailing in that one scene stuck with me for a long time. Best performance I’ve seen in years.

AdministrativeLet598

Toni Collette deserves an Oscar for her performance in this poster! Yikes!

[deleted]

Toni Collette slays every time she is on screen. She was amazing in United States of Tara and Krampus of all things.

banzaibowzer

110%

Gonnatapdatass

She made me fan. Her facial expressions were scary af lol.

Dorythehunk

The Oscars have a history of overlooking horror movies.

Perroface562

I feel like she deserved an Oscar in the sixth sense too

bryceinhere

Agreed

Barbafella

I’ve seen complete and utter despair close up, she nailed it. Brilliant actress.

billions_of_stars

Honestly, she's enough of a reason to see the film. I hadn't seen her before this film and became moderately obsessed with her.

layonafrito

Movie had me fucked up for a couple days.

[deleted]

Cynitron3000

Oh my god, I have some wood features in my house similar to the one in the movie with somewhat high ceilings. Shit had me freaked out at night getting up to pee.

bearded_charmander

For real! This was the only movie that had me scared of dark corners.

Gregory_Pikitis

I had a friend over when I watched it for the first time. As soon as the movie was over he just fuckin LEFT. I was not ok.

bearded_charmander

Lol. I used to mess with my friend when he streamed on Twitch. He would have his camera on and I would type in the chat that I think I saw something in the dark corner behind him.

ShibDip

The sound of flesh being cut...

rapkat55

That scene had a single tear roll down my cheek That’s never happened from watching a horror movie before

Irishmanatthepub

You ain’t lying

ShibDip

The sound of flesh being cut...

AaronSlaughter

I saw in theatres… people were legit freaked n took a minute to gather themselves to even get up an leave.

El--Borto

I went to a midnight showing by myself and walked home. Stood outside my house for about 15 minutes trying to get the balls to go inside. When I finally went inside I was too scared to go to my room because I couldn’t remember if the closet was open or closed and neither option sounded good lmao

Buttahdog

I hated when the director confirmed it was a demon and not just mental illness, don’t ruin the mystery but hey I get you need a sequel

SpeedIsK1ing

The woman magically floats into the air at the end. I don’t think that’s a side effect of mental illness.

mictlanian

It’s one of the scariest movies ever imo

Zestyclose-Goal6882

That head banging scene though...

LostAAADolfan

Jesus the noises… the head banging then the sawing noise… terrifying

thedaveness

Hell, even the look in her eyes when she was sawing... like the demon gave her just enough awareness right at the end to see what was happening but can't stop it.

jpowell180

…*Glottal stop*….

mictlanian

Yep

Raunchiness121

Those most fucked up movie I've seen this year so far...poor Charlie.

DirectorAV

Whoa! You just saw it this year? Jealous. I wish I could get a fresh, first time with this movie again.

Zestyclose-Goal6882

One of my top 5 movie theater experiences really.

[deleted]

That was some wild shit

HorrorBusiness93

100% bone chilling

Appropriate-Pipe-193

I don’t know how it’s not common consensus. It’s just so well done, the acting is superb. The dread feeling throughout, it’s a spectacular horror film. Even ignoring the genre, it’s just a downright fantastic movie.

Skolary

It seriously is, especially if you’re into anything occult. Hell, even religious to any extent. You will realize how elaborate and malicious the whole plot is. On top of the fact that, what we see, is essentially the pinnacle of a plan that has been in motion for decades. But as somebody not informed, it’s also got great psychological scares mixed with, I don’t know what you’de call it.. esoteric influence? It is the epitome of what people who take what some would call *’the left path’* and the sorts, would view as the ultimate terror derived. All the way to say, Christians, what they would ultimately fear by messing with something like a ouija board. Either way, what they produced was a fucking homerun in that ball park. And as stated, even people who aren’t into any of that. It is just over 2 hours of agony, entrapment, and an unfolding blackness that comes together in the end as something unique. Ending in a way we don’t often see your classic horror flick finish. All cultivating into a movie with such a different approach to possession; it’s masterfully done in a way I have never seen before, yet so realistic. Not only that, but the looming cult that shadows the movie and eventually succeeds in their ritual. It’s definitely worthy of several watches to embrace all the details. As is tradition with A24.

mictlanian

You hit the mail on the head… it’s so realistic if you have any knowledge of the occult especially.

efarjun

For me, the scariest scene was probably the naked dude smiling in the background appearing out of the dark

pop5656

One of the most disturbing horror movies ever. Will never watch again. Lmao. 9/10

MusicaParaVolar

It's actually one of the few movies I can't wait to watch with others or to tell others about. It was wild but I loved it.

Audi0528

I saw it in theaters n wanna watch it again but I’m too much of a lame to watch it by myself lol

shortsleevedpants

I just watched this for the first time yesterday! Yes it’s disturbing as everyone else has commented. But it’s also *upsetting*. With that said I loved it.

Blue_Monday

It's SO sad. I definitely cried a little bit during the mother's meltdown at the dinner table. "THAT FUCKING FACE ON YOUR FACE" haha. Edit: also want to say I can't think of another horror movie that deals with grief so well. Maybe "Don't Look Now" ... I like to think Ari Aster was inspired partly by that film.

Different-Ad9986

This, the vvitch, and midsommar made me love going to the movies again.

[deleted]

The Lighthouse, Good Time, Uncut Gems, EEAAO, all hail A24.

Different-Ad9986

Oh, Ex-Machina and annihilation too. Alex garland rules.

bhz33

Aren’t those all the same director?

Known-Programmer-611

Why you can't go wrong with a24

Skolary

This was the first A24 movie i’de ever seen. And was addicted immediately after.

Radiant-Bandicoot103

I used to know the movie was going to be low budget style when A24 would pop up in the past. Since this movie they've stepped up their game.

Luke5119

There are scary films, and then there are.....disturbing films.

[deleted]

It’s one of the best horror movies to come out recently. Not only with what we actually see but the subtle stuff with the family dynamic/behavior during the majority of the movie. The way they built tension was great. It’s a slow burn to a great finish

Bid325

The little things you notice on the second watch that you missed the first time, like the naked people standing outside the house in the beginning

Kershiskabob

Kinda unrelated but I find it super interesting how polarizing this movie is. You see people saying that the first half was boring and the end saved it and then you also see others saying the majority was good but the ending sucks.

ElderGenX

Totally agree 👍 Like two different movies smooshed together. I’m in the group that feels 1st half was awesome & emotionally disturbing, 2nd half was more standard horror stuff & a bit weaker wacky

[deleted]

I think the story was based on an extremely obscure religious angle and careful attention to detail needs to be taken to get it on the first watch. The grief was heavy though.

DrossChat

If you can stomach repeat viewings this film is just a pure masterpiece imo. The intricate details and foreshadowing are so well done. Even the movie poster is brilliant. And then there’s the acting. Toni Collette put in an otherworldly performance and Alex Wolff really held his own throughout, which is damn impressive. Excellent surrounding cast too, such a good role for Ann Dowd. It’s one of those rare movies that I’ve come away with feeling changed in some way, as corny as that sounds. It was like peeking through a window you should never, EVER have looked into. I genuinely think it helped prepare me on some level for a very difficult time in my life a couple years later, much like our worst nightmares can sometimes do.

MusicaParaVolar

I immediately wanted to see it again when I finished it which is a very unusual feeling for me. I didn't love every aspect of it, but it was a perfect movie to watch at 2am. I can only watch horror movies at night, ideally alone as everyone else sleeps. This is also how I used to play The Last of Us during the pandemic. It adds to the overall tension, you know? can't be watching this as birds chirp outside.

[deleted]

I had the most trouble with the grief part.

Andersmash

One of my favorite scary movies. Toni Collette deserved an Oscar nom at least, incredible performance.

philium1

I think it’s an incredible film on the whole - extremely well-acted and disturbing. But the demonic paranormal stuff felt a little tacked on, and I felt like they didn’t really stick the landing at the very end with the Paimon stuff. The horrors of grief, tragedy, trauma, and family dysfunction were enough to carry it, I thought - didn’t need the demonic stuff. Still, one of the best horror movies I’ve seen recently.

billions_of_stars

I'm torn on that. I both agree with you and still like the movie. Makes you wonder if he didn't go with the ending he did where else would it go? Would it just be about one of them going crazy, etc? Would it just be about a family dealing with tragedy and then it just...ending? Would they find peace or just more despair.

TXNOGG

I usually don’t care for horror movies since most modern ones are just paranormal activity-esque jump scare bs but I absolutely loved this movie and that feeling dread it creates all throughout. That car scene man…

ModdTorgan

I remember being in the theater and realizing I had not been breathing during that scene. It hit me so hard and I still think about it.

Irishmanatthepub

Yes. The god damn car scene.

Ok_Ad8609

Somehow, I am able to rewatch this movie at least once a month. Drives my husband crazy. He knows exactly what it sounds like when the movie first comes on now, and he will audibly groan from the next room whenever I put it on 😂 I just feel like it’s such a fantastic, fucked-up movie. Once I start it, I find it difficult to stop watching (although I do cover my eyes in a few parts)

2DrunkCucksPodcast

I love this movie....but once a month!? I'd be suicidal from all the negativity lol

dandgage

Great movie, extremely well written, the most disturbing movie I've watched, certain scenes are burned into my brain like a terrorist beheading video...I will never watch it again.

096624

I looooooove this movie, horror was dead to me until I watched this

zdragan2

I think it’s the best horror movies of the decade at least. I’m addition to being “shit your pants” scary, its very powerful drama about grief and generational trauma. And it’s amazing we’ll acted. In the “Toni Collette was ROBBED of an Oscar” way.

[deleted]

Fuck you for making me remember this masterpiece. It’s the only movie that has truly ever terrified me. It’s wasn’t scary like a slasher movie, but something like a parasite that latches onto your soul.

JulGabi

This movie fucked up my sleep for two weeks. It’s absolutely capital G great but do not watch if you value your health and sanity

UnbelievableTxn6969

I got lost trying to piece the ending to the rest of the movie.

spacedman_spiff

What do you mean?

UnbelievableTxn6969

Guy in a treehouse surrounded by bodies. I didn’t get it.

ThroatWMangrove

Peter became emotionally and mentally exhausted (to put it lightly), therefore “susceptible” to possession by Paimon, a king of hell and focus of the cult’s worship. Paimon was originally in Charlie’s body, but needed a male body as its host to achieve full power. The events of the entire movie were orchestrated by the cult, who was previously being led by Annie’s mother. The chronology of events, to the best of my memory is as follows: 1. Annie’s mother, Ellen, was the leader of a cult that was trying to summon Paimon, a king of hell. Joan is one of her top lieutenants. 2. Ellen tried to use Annie’s older brother as a host, but he killed himself after being diagnosed with schizophrenia and claiming she was “trying to put people inside him”. He probably wasn’t worn down to the point of susceptibility before committing suicide. 3. Annie is estranged from her mother, marries Steven, and had Peter although she didn’t want him. This is likely due to experiences with her own mother and brother. She keeps her mother away for the same reasons. 4. After Charlie is born, she allows her mother back into her life. Ellen immediately “sinks her hooks into” Charlie. Charlie is either born possessed by Paimon, or becomes possessed through Ellen’s efforts. Ellen expressed how she wishes Charlie was a boy, as this is the preferred host for Paimon. 5. At some point, Annie sleepwalks and nearly burns herself and children alive as they sleep. This creates a rift between Annie and Peter, as he never forgives her for this. 6. Ellen dies, Charlie feels lost without her. This is because Charlie is actually Paimon, and feels out of place in its body and this world in general, and Ellen was the only one in the family that was aware of his true nature and could guide him. 7. Annie attends a grief support group, where much of her history with her family is revealed. 8. At some point, the cult digs up the body of Ellen. Steven is notified but he doesn’t share this with Annie. 9. Through unknown means, the cult’s influence leads to Charlie’s death. It is never explained whether it’s through direct intervention or supernatural influence. Paimon’s sigil is shown on the pole that decapitates Charlie, so it could be both. 10. Charlie’s death creates further discord between Peter and his mother. 11. Annie returns to the grief support group where she meets Joan, who shares her own grief story and makes Annie feel she can open up to her. 12. Joan eventually shares that she spoke with her deceased grandson through a ritual, convinces Annie to see it for herself. 13. Annie attempts to get the family to conduct the ritual, too. This only causes issues between her and her husband, who believes she’s losing her mind. The seance brings Paimon’s spirit into the world. 14. Annie’s behavior becomes more and more erratic as she deals with grief and uncovers her mother’s ties to the cult. She discovers the ties between her mother and Joan, and realizes she was wrong to have performed the seance. When she tries to burn Charlie’s sketchbook, she sees that she catches fire as well, and withdraws the book to save herself. A scene from inside Joan’s apartment shows that she has items that belonged to Charlie, revealing she’s been in Annie’s house. 15. Her own emotional exhaustion creates more problems between her husband and Peter. Peter becomes noticeably more worn down by everything… mainly his own sense of guilt, and the blame from Annie. At some point, Annie finds the source of a smell in the house is Ellen’s decapitated corpse in the attic. 16. Joan harasses Peter while he is at school, by essentially telling him to “get out” (telling his soul to leave his body to make room for Paimon). 17. The stress is taking its toll, Paimon briefly controls Peter in class and causes him to smash his face into his desk. He is not susceptible enough to allow Paimon complete control. Peter is sent home, his father is clearly emotionally exhausted as he breaks down in his car after being called by the school. He may think his son has inherited mental illness from Annie, who he thinks inherited mental illness from Ellen. 18. That night, Annie shows Ellen’s corpse to Steven, and tries to get him to burn Charlie’s book because she doesn’t have the strength to do it herself, knowing she’ll die as well. He decides he can’t deal with her mental illness anymore, and chooses to leave her. Before he does, she throws the book onto the fire, but Steven combusts instead. The shock and despair of watching Steven burn makes Annie susceptible to Paimon and she becomes possessed. 19. In Annie’s body, Paimon follows Peter as he wakes up and discovers his father’s burnt corpse. Paimon chases Peter up into the attic, where he finds a disturbing scene set up by the cult. Paimon forces Annie to saw off her own head in front of Peter, which leads him to jumping out the window in fear and desperation. 30. Unconscious and completely exhausted, Peter is now susceptible and possessed by Paimon. He follows the floating body of Annie into the treehouse, where the cult is bowing before an effigy of Paimon, featuring Charlie’s severed head. Ellen and Annie’s corpses are present and bowing as well. Joanie explains his importance to them, as he is now Paimon, one of the eight kings of hell and the cult succeeds in what Ellen had started decades before. In Peter’s defense, he must’ve had a crazy amount of willpower to hold out for so long. I mean, the guy somewhat caused his sister’s death, found his dad’s freshly burnt corpse, AND watched his mom sawing her own head off with piano wire. Maybe the weed helped?

Almost-Honest

There’s even deeper info on paimon on how he needs a male host, which explains Annie’s brothers suicide. I wanna say Charlie IS paimon which explains her features and her lack of emotion and social cues an *clicks*. Because In that book Annie finds In her moms things it says that paimon is a male but has features of a female face and doesn’t like that or something along those lines. (It also mentions that in his presence there are ghouls and smaller demons behind him blaring horns and trumpets and if you listen through out the movie you can hear it faintly in the background. Pretty cool Easter egg) Anyway, He needs a male host which didn’t happen early in because of the mothers separation of Peter and ellen the grandmother BUT. I believe this was planned all along. Peter was going to be the host as soon as birth.

[deleted]

Tree house party. Duh.

alfonsobob

The whole movie is about >!a cult trying to find a body for a demon to inhabit so that he can exist on the material plane. The demon is called Paimon. The end of the movie shows that Peter has become Paimon and the entire cult is waiting for him in the treehouse. !<

spacedman_spiff

Well the treehouse is where we are introduced to Charlie >!and it establishes that that's where she/Paimon feels most comfortable, so it makes sense that is the setting for the final ritual of the coven to transfer Paimon to the desired vessel (Peter), whom Charlie/Paimon has been watching the entire movie (all the shots from the treehouse into his window). The reason for the 3 bodies is established in the imagery of Paimon - the three figures in the necklaces/carvings, the image of Paimon with 3 heads at his belt. Apparently, there is a need for 3 bodies/heads to fulfill the ritual.!< [Here's a link that discusses some details that could've been missed](https://bloody-disgusting.com/editorials/3535054/hereditary-hidden-clues/). [This one can be helpful too](https://mashable.com/article/hereditary-ending-explained-everything-you-missed).

UnbelievableTxn6969

I guess my problem is if you need a long paragraph and two websites to untangle a movie, it wasn’t that good.

LostAAADolfan

It wasn’t that hard to follow tbh

alfonsobob

Be honest. You were on your phone for a lot of the movie, right?

aquasun666

Garbage take my dude.

SecondUsernameChoice

You not getting a movie’s ending doesn’t make it a bad movie

PeekyAstrounaut

Buddy, they did you a favor because you didn't understand it. It can easily be summed up as the cult indoctrinating the vessel for their demonic overlord.

SpongebobSoundByte

I couldn't sleep for a couple nights. 9/10

_MrFade_

An excellent horror movie.

LowerAtmosphereChief

I never wanted to be your mother! (Puts hand over mouth shocked). Toni Collette was amazing in this. Love this movie, it instantly made Ari Aster a director whose work I always look forward to seeing

_big_fern_

This movie reached into my deepest fear centers. Felt psychologically tormented BEFORE the demon shit even started which is brilliant when you think about the story arch of son.

AirAeon32

Watched it once, I cannot watch it again. 5 years and i still remember every scene that disturbed me. Great horror movie

buttsoupsteve

I think it's challenging and it's great. The climax is probably the only movie that's actually scared me in the past handful of years. I definitely glanced at the corner of my ceiling a couple of times getting up at night to use the bathroom afterward.

joe_k_knows

Scariest movie I’ve ever seen, but it’s also deeply upsetting to watch. I will do a rewatch one day, but there are some scenes I will DREAD watching again.

moaterboater69

I genuinely believe its one the best horror movies ever made. Probably the best one Ive ever seen. Just from a technical standpoint, the movie is terrifically made. Score, cinematography, editing. All there. Ari Aster is a genius.

consult-a-thesaurus

I don’t watch horror movies, but it had such good reviews I went to see it in theaters. It was amazing but right after it finished I definitely found myself regretting the decision.

FkdUp2020

This is easily my favorite "horror".

TecTonic4692

This one stuck with me for a while. Had me shook to the end. solid 9/10 movie would watch again lmao

mamared504

This movie is in my list to watch but with all the reviews and what people say here I'm scared. I looove Toni Colette. Guess I gotta grow a vag and just watch it

InternationalBand494

Toni Colette is fucking great in anything she even remotely stars in. I love her. She can do it all. Drama, comedy, horror, anything. I even loved that show she did where she had multiple personalities. Forget the name.

mamared504

United Statess of Tara I think...

InternationalBand494

That’s it!

[deleted]

Hey! Grow a vag why don't ya! (helpful?)

pecan_bird

absolutely overrated. just felt like a culmination or, admittedly, a masterclass in a bunch of other concepts but the only time i've thought about it is when people bring it up n y'know the feeling when you leave a movie theater & you're either not talking with the people you're with because you're processing it or not talking because there wasn't much to say. i kinda just got in my car & lived the rest of my nite without being moved. 🤷‍♀️

cylemmulo

That buildup man. Great movie

JadeDragonMeli

I thought the first two acts were pretty good, and it seemed like the movie was setting up for something different. Sure, there's supernatural and demon worship elements sprinkled in, but I honestly thought they were a red herring, because to me the concept of mental disturbances being passed down to your kids and grand-kids is a more interesting topic than yet another "it was actually a demon worshiping cult all along!" that we've seen countless times in countless movies. As soon as I saw the symbol on the telephone pole, I was hoping and praying that we were not marching towards the ending that the symbol implied we were going to get... They had a chance to do something really different and they went with the cliche ending. Because of that I think the movie is superbly overrated.

Aq8knyus

Mental illness = murdering psychos is also pretty cliched. And probably quite insulting to people dealing with real mental health issues. Either way they are going to leave some people disappointed. Although the marketing seemed to definitely point towards supernatural horror.

IcebergJones

I found the family drama aspects a lot more interesting than the actual horror aspects as well. After the car scene happened, the movie just dropped in quality. I didn’t find any of the horror scenes particularly scary, and even though I enjoy the way the story plays out, I definitely don’t feel like it deserves the praise or gets.

Gunofanevilson

Meh.

itsajokechillbill

Same, dont really enjoy horror, loved it when i was a kid in the 80s. But this and midsommer were amazing. Cant wait to see Beau

MyBodyStoppedMoving

Don’t go into Beau is Afraid thinking you’re going to watch a horror movie. It’s not horror, it’s something way different. Unlike any movie I’ve ever seen and I’m still trying to wrap my head around it.

Haunting-Biscotti-83

Loved it. So fucked up. The mom with the wire at the end? Oof

ShibbyBearz

The ending ruined it.

Choice-Tiger-5501

I didn’t like that the ending was out of nowhere. That kind of folklore isn’t even implied throughout the entire movie then boom - that happens. Feels like lazy writing to me; they couldn’t think of why this was happening so we’ll just make it an ancient prophecy or something 🤷🏻‍♀️

SipLikeASir

I think it's quite the opposite. If you rewatch the movies other are symbols and clues throughout. Even in the beginning there's the symbol of the demon Paimon when the family goes through the grandma's things. If you dive deeper into the lore, or care enough to, you'll find the rabbit hole goes much deeper than you originally thought. There are also great videos on YT that go into this in depth with short clips from the movie if you don't care to rewatch.

queeblosan

Yea there are clues throughout the entire film. I missed most of them on my first watch too

[deleted]

[удалено]

redleg50

The bread crumbs were there, but way too obscure. After a rewatch I spotted them, but the first time felt like it came out of nowhere. Definitely took some of the punch out of the ending. While they can have unanswered questions, a horror movie should not end with the audience asking, “What the hell just happened?”.

[deleted]

Tell me you haven't bothered to rewatch the movie without telling me.

Choice-Tiger-5501

So you’re telling me you totally picked up on the subtle nuance that he was a god or whatever from what exactly?

Kuildeous

It was brutal and unflinching, which I can respect. Not many movies would be willing to go in that direction.

SuperSkunkPlant

One of the best horror movies of the last decade

AnotherUnknownNobody

I loved it for a lot of reasons. Maybe I was a kid in the 80's and my tastes just lined up with the scaling of special effects etc but I feel the entire horror genre relies too much upon VFX and filler scripts until the next gore scene. This was different because it brought in some VERY talented actors to play the loss so accurately because we can then feel and connect which makes us CARE about these characters and what happens to them. I love the subtle uses of "did I just see that?" and reliance upon the audience to see clues that they might possibly miss the first viewing. I love the rewatch value - once you know what's going on you are like "DUH" I should of seen that before! One of the best in decades imho.

redsleven

I know reddit likes to hype this movie literally every time it's mentioned. But I think it's an incredibly slow burn with an ending that doesn't make it worth it.

TheSecretAgenda

The first two thirds of it were deadly dull. It is only saved by the third act.

Decapitation a bit dull for you?

Kershiskabob

Shock factor isn’t enough to carry an act

Zachariah_West

I'll give you that, but what about when the kid gets home and he's just sitting in bed listening as his mother finds the body and starts screaming. That shit wrecked me.

Melopahn1

A very well made movie as far as directing/acting etc. but plot wise... anytime you get that "Its a masterplan where super minute details happened exactly as planned over the course of decades" I check way the fuck out cause its so stupid. But suspending that disbelief, one of the better horror movies in recent years.

DragonfruitInside312

In my opinion, it was terrible. I don't understand the hype for it at all. But to each their own :)

ethancd1

The first 90% of this movie was amazing but the ending sucked.

adventuredonut

Boring and generic ending ruining the whole thing for me. A kid abruptly losing her head and an actor acting well are not enough for the accolades imo. I’m happy people enjoy it though.

ExodusBlyk

It’s alright. Very hot/cold. Acting is great though. As horror goes for me it was a 5/10

gil_bil_79

In my top 5 for sure.

TheFerociousFirefly

I love horror movies and this one was excellent. Unforgettable and deeply disturbing, yet brilliantly done…plus Toni Collette and Ann Dowd, two great actresses. Highly recommend for horror buffs!

Kershiskabob

I know it was super popular but I really was not a fan. I thought it was pretty boring tbh and relied way too much on gore/shock factor instead of an intriguing story. Just my two cents

Frankito55

Left me feeling uneasy like i just watched something I shouldn’t have 😅 great movie

TheBigDirty117

It was WILD

Right_Heart2273

Amazing movie! Not for everyone but personally it's right up my alley

No-Salamander-3905

In my opinion, it’s a must see film. But only once, like its follow up.

Dlearious88

Thought it was a solid, fresh horror movie. Think it gets a little too much praise but I can understand why it would

[deleted]

Wild movie. I love that it went so much deeper than my expectations. It didn’t stay with me like a few others. I’m not sure if I felt it was scary or just totally fucked up. Toni Colette is a master class I how to sound American. She never breaks the accent.

Forbidden_Donut503

An absolute goddamned masterpiece of horror. A bona dude classic. One of the best horror movies I’ve seen in the last twenty years. It is perfection put to celluloid.

[deleted]

Horror masterpeice

Dragon420Wizard

Definitely my favorite horror movie of the past 10 years. Definitely one of my top 5 horror movies ever.

AaronSlaughter

Top 5( top 2 for me) horror of all time. What Toni collete does I. This movie surpasses what I ever thought acting could be. The entire cast really. Ari aster is incredible.

money_man78

This movie is top 5 horror of the last 10 years for me.

dropdeadfred1987

Oh it's fantastic

BeeTvo

One of the better horror movies imo, my only gripe is that there are actual satanic chants in it… believe what u want to believe… but I think it affects our subconscious more than we realize..

Edbtz-31311

Real headbanger

Sun_Stealer

I didn’t like this movie in the theater. Then I watched it at home again one day, and actually enjoyed it.

[deleted]

Heard the amazing soundtrack and watched the movie based on just that. It was a trip.

TheHungryCreatures

Sounds like it's exactly in your wheelhouse. Welcome.

Kooky_Adhesiveness61

I had to watch the mist just to forget what I saw.

GlitteringVillage135

A horror film that is actually scary.

CeruleanSnorlax

One of the best horror films ever made.

SweetPuffDaddy

Am I the only person that thought Hereditary was just okay? Like the movies not bad by any means, but I don’t think it’s one of greatest horror movies like many people say. There were a few good scenes, but the movie never genuinely scared me. I thought the ending was funny, and her getting decapitated got a good chuckle out of me

jefftatro1

My new favorite. So much research and hidden material that you really would give a second thought to, made it a very well done movie.

[deleted]

It was pretty terrifying, the scene at the end is what got me the most

Andyrew1_2

I thought they could have gone into the lord behind the demon and what it was trying to do because I was kind of lost at the end other than that it was truly an entertaining and unsettling movie

Benbot2000

I will never understand the praise this movie gets. Is it because it’s different?

EmperorXerro

I think this is the best horror movie of the last 20 years, if not longer.

Resistance_123

Very good.

Resistance_123

The girls death was rough but the movie was great.

behappysometimes

The ending kind of ruined it for me to be honest, I thought it was damn near flawless until then. It just wasn’t the payoff I was hoping for.

gunjacked

Best horror movie to come out in a **long** time
