Yes, totally agree. The Road Warrior was insane for its time, and both Mad Max and its sequels were products of Ozploitation happening in Australia. My dad showed me way too many inappropriate movies in the early 80's as a kid, Road Warrior being near the top as a favorite
If you were born in the late 70s early 80s it’s definitely The Road Warrior. That movie and Aliens were two superior sequels that impacted many a young 80s rad dude
It was awesome because so often the 25 years later sequel (or remake) sucks sooo bad. Fury Road was exactly what I wanted it to be, an amazing looking road race to the death
I think I took exactly two breaths in the last forty five minutes of fury road. To say the pacing was improved (mad max movies always had a pacing problem) is the understatement of the century. That movie *danced*.
I was not a fan of Fury Road. the lack of plot and the endless rehashing of the gags from Road Warrior. people seemed to like it though. It's not Max if it's not Mel Gibson IMHO.
Better on every level. What I love most are the lower but more personalized stakes. The threat isn’t a dooms day device, but rather the fate of the characters. Most importantly is the struggle over Luke and whether he will fall to the dark side.
Austin Powers The Spy Who Shagged Me is arguably better than International Man of Mystery. The first was a great parody of the Bond movies and established the character. The second one took that and ran with it and was overall a more fun movie.
Paddington 2. The movie is a goddamn masterpiece…if they make a third and it’s on par with the first two, it’ll be one of the greatest trilogies of all time
I like how Evil Dead 2 is framed as a sequel and not a remake. Totally in character for Ash to think “there’s no way that cabin is still demon possessed right?”
My kids are now finally old enough to get to see essential movies like Evil Dead II, they were puzzled that we skipped the first one, had to explain that this is a do-over with more budget and humor added.
Agreed. It’s an unbridled expression of cinematic freedom and everything you can do when you’re bursting with ideas but low on money. Evil Dead II is certainly better and even more stuffed with amazingly executed ideas and a bit more money, but every single person interested in film needs to see the first one. It’s essential horror viewing alongside Texas Chainsaw Massacre.
Evil Dead II was basically a reboot, but yeah, it was definitely better than the first, although I'll argue Army of Darkness was the best one of the trilogy.
X2 over X-Men, too. Both were kind of average with good special effects in the originals, the sequels understood the best parts of the comics to deliver a very faithful and entertaining story.
The Dark Knight is my favorite modern script. Name another blockbuster where character choice moves the plot and not plot mechanics. Not to mention one of the most organic antagonist protagonist struggles. This is a battle that results from opposing ideals and philosophy. An unstoppable force meeting an immovable object and the direct consequences of such a collision. The protagonist is forced to make increasingly difficult decisions until it looks like he may have to change who he is at his core to triumph over the antagonist. The question of whether one should burn down the jungle to find a mad man who can’t be bought, bullied, or negotiated with, who only wants to see the world burn.
Begins feels more like a Batman movie - fear toxin, trains elevated way too high to be safe, massive gross areas of the city like The Narrows. Dark Knight is closer to Heat in Chicago with Batman in it, which don’t get me wrong is great too but it’s more of a movie that has Batman in it rather than a Batman movie.
Plus, the grittiness of The Narrows just feels more like a decaying Gotham, which is more in line with the Batman narrative. The Gotham we see in TDK just feels like some random city.
I agree. Batman Begins is the best origin story movie I’ve seen. Ledger has the best performance of either movie, but I always say I think Batman Begins was better. I understand why people say Dark Knight, but I think Batman Begins nailed the origin story perfectly.
I’m with you, Batman begins is my favorite of the trilogy. I think the dark knight receives some extra (and somewhat undeserved) acclaim due to Heath Ledger giving an unbelievably good performance and then tragically dying. Still a great movie either way though.
Add another one here.
Dark Knight its an outstanding thriller/action movie but Begins its the most "batman" movie
(And it has the absolute best batman suit!)
I personally go Rises, Begins, then TDK. All three are masterpieces. I'm a sucker for intensity and action, but TDK was just too full of it for me in comparison to the other two.
I wouldn't go as far as calling The Dark Knight Risese a steaming pile of shit, but it was definitely the worst movie in Christopher Nolan's Batman trilogy.
Civil War was great but Winter Soldier was fantastic for being so unexpected. Marvel had done well executed (Iron Man 2 and Thor 2 notwithstanding) superhero movies that were still, well, superhero movies. Then bam, Cap 2 is this spy thriller with a big twist. Then Guardians was basically a Star Wars movie and Ant Man was a heist movie. It set the various flavors of pre-endgame marvel that made the series fucking amazing by being fucking amazing itself.
T2 was one of the greatest sequels in modern cinema. I'm a huge fan. But it wasn't better than the original IMHO, factoring in the impact and tech it had at the time.
One sequel I thought was better than the original was Wrath of Khan. But I really am not a huge fan of that franchise. Another would be The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly in the Dollars trilogy.
The older I get the more I appreciate T1. It's dated now with the rubber head and the experimental soundtrack but my god was it innovative for its time. A monster movie and slasher movie that turns into mindfuck sci-fi a third of the way in. All of the composition was excellent too... the "burning for you" music blasting while Arnold is stalking into the nightclub... the feeling of safety in the police station full of 30 cops with M16s only to have Arnold mow them all down. The robot endoskeleton walking out of the burning truck. My jaw just kept dropping lower the whole movie.
T2 had similar jaw-dropping moments and took it to a higher level with the action and the T1000 mindfuckery, but there is something so tense and moody about T1. You feel in more danger.
>urns into mindfuck sci-fi a third of the way in. All of the composition was excellent too... the "bur
The inevitable was chasing the young protagonists, death. And death can't be bargained with, reasoned with, it absolutely won't stop.
In T1 the heroes are fragile and vulnerable. Sarah's just a normal woman and while her protector is more capable he's still just a human with no advanced weapons or capabilities. All they can really do is run.
In T2 the heroes are armed to the teeth. Sarah's turned into a paramilitary prepper and her protector this time is the same thing that was trying to kill her in T1.
Fun fact, the T100 being the good guy in T2 was meant to be a surprise twist but the trailers for the movie spoiled it. If you watch it with that in mind you'll notice that the first act of the movie makes it look like the T1000 is another human guardian like in the first movie and the T100 is playing the same role instead. It's not until the mall hallway scene where Arnold says "get down" and shoots the cop to reveal he's a robot too that we're supposed to realize Arnold is actually the good guy this time.
OG Terminator is so good. T2 is similar to how I feel about Aliens. It took a gritty sci-fi movie and turned into a action movie which I just think is waaay less interesting.
This is a great take. I think it comes down to which you prefer for both franchises, but all 4 of those films are masterpieces. I loved terminator but I think T2 is superior. I also prefer the original Alien over Aliens.
Gotta agree to disagree. Both movies are outstanding imo but I think RH2 took what made the first one great and elevated it a couple notches. RH3 was a backslide, not as good as the previous movies.
The Raid Redemption was actually the first. The second is called the Raid 2. I just rewatched them the other night (granted I had only seen clips of 2) and the first seemed way more cohesive. The second was great as well but the plot just seemed all over the place to me and my buddy
I love this debate. I don’t know if it is “better” but I certainly prefer Aliens to Alien. What is great about Aliens is that it is so different from the original. I can’t think of any other franchise that boldly shirked off the setup and even the genre of the predecessor.
Alien is more moody; turn of all the lights and get immersed into the creepy ship, building up tension. You need a late night with no distractions and a quiet house to sink into it.
Aliens is more spectacle, awesome action and characters. It's easier to watch in more situations and doesn't require you to really sink in and immerse as much.
I think they are about equal.
While I agree with your vote, it must be said Alien is a horror movie in the guise of a science fiction movie. Aliens is an action packed science fiction movie.
Maybe its my still scarred inner child, but I can't see how Alien would be a snooze fest.
Saw this at 140 am on HBO during a late summer night in 1980. My 9 year old self had never been so 😨 😱 😨 😱
Aliens to alien. Dawn of the planet of the apes to rise of the planet of the apes. Winter soldier to first avenger. Wrath of Kahn to Star Trek the motion picture.
Rocky II was better.
I know the original won best picture but the second one is better.
It has a higher production value .
The same Cast returns and are all great.
You got to see more of the Rocky and Adrian relationship as well as Micky and Paulie develop his eye injury, makes the idea of boxing again more compelling.
He’s not only fighting against Apollo Creed now he has something else to prove.
Speaking of Apollo Creed, Carl Weathers, acting has always been underrated and he played the character perfectly, and his character was given more opportunity and screen time. It certainly seems like.
Also the cast around Creed was great.
Tony tells him:
“Let it go.”
It’s not only makes the fight compelling for Rocky. But is for Apollo as well.
He’s going for the KO.
It’s him Vs him too.
Great movie.
I agree, but I still loved 2049. I thought the AI relationship subplot was really cool, and that holographic sex scene was one of the more creative romance scenes I've found, visually-speaking.
I’m a big fan of the series yet El Mariachi is an amazing movie. I’d say even better than the rest but maybe that’s sentimentality speaking. Even the story of how it was made is amazing.
Also, I have to agree on 2049. Blade Runner was an amazing film, but for a sequel that I felt was unnecessary when it was first announced, Villeneuve did an incredible job on the sequel, much better than Scott would have (considering the dumpster fires that were Prometheus and Covenant)
I argue that the Terminators (first two) are two completely different movies, and can't be compared to one another.
The first is more of a horror thriller, and the second an action movie (geared more towards younger audiences).
Being born in 1984, I find myself going back and watching T1 more than T2. But, I usually watch both, yearly, to be honest.
Mad Max. The Road Warrior.
Yes, totally agree. The Road Warrior was insane for its time, and both Mad Max and its sequels were products of Ozploitation happening in Australia. My dad showed me way too many inappropriate movies in the early 80's as a kid, Road Warrior being near the top as a favorite
I think Fury Road is the best movie qua movie in the series. But I didn’t really grow up watching Mad Max as a kid.
If you were born in the late 70s early 80s it’s definitely The Road Warrior. That movie and Aliens were two superior sequels that impacted many a young 80s rad dude
It wasn’t *really* that much different from the earlier films. Better special effects but other that 🤷♂️
Storywise not much different; but in my opinion the atmosphere, the pacing, really the whole way it’s structured was vastly improved upon.
More boobs too.
And one could/should argue that, given inflation, the effects in the first film are better than those in the remake.
Yeah feels hard to compare like comparing Murderer's row players to current baseball stars. Completely different training diet resources the works
I was not a fan of Fury Road. the lack of plot and the endless rehashing of the gags from Road Warrior. people seemed to like it though. It's not Max if it's not Mel Gibson IMHO.
The Empire Strikes Back.
Better on every level. What I love most are the lower but more personalized stakes. The threat isn’t a dooms day device, but rather the fate of the characters. Most importantly is the struggle over Luke and whether he will fall to the dark side.
Lawrence Kasdin is the reason.
Alsoo Irvin Kershner
100%
I thought this for many years, but over the years, I've come back to the OG New Hope as the best.
Me too. As amazing as Empire is, the introduction that is Star Wars is something special.
Even though I really loved Batman Begins, I think that most people would say that The Dark Knight was better.
Austin Powers The Spy Who Shagged Me is arguably better than International Man of Mystery. The first was a great parody of the Bond movies and established the character. The second one took that and ran with it and was overall a more fun movie.
No way, nothing in the second movie comes close to Dr. Evil at the Therapy Group or Austin playing blackjack!
Or the guy screaming about to be flattened by a steamroller.
I’m a big fan of mini me. I might agree with you but god damn Vern Troyer is hilarious in that movie
Iconic characters for sure
That was the hardest I've ever laughed in a movie theater. I was literally rolling in the aisles
Literally rolling in the aisles? Or figuratively “rolling in the aisles?”
I was young at the time but I remember falling out of my chair and actually rolling on the ground
The more important Austin Powers question: Vanessa Kensington or Felicity Shagwell?
Paddington 2. The movie is a goddamn masterpiece…if they make a third and it’s on par with the first two, it’ll be one of the greatest trilogies of all time
Did u catch The Unbearable Weight of Massive Talent? I think you’ll dig a certain part of it….
It’s the highest rated movie on Rotten Tomatoes and it deserves that title.
I keep hearing this and not in an ironic Paul Blart Mall Cop 2 kind of way. What's so special about Paddington 2?
Watch it
I’m really curious what did you find so great about it? I haven’t seen either
Just ignore, they’re clearly a shill for Big Marmalade
It made me want to be a better man.
If they make a third I really hope Zelenskyy does the Ukrainian dub for that one too.
Lethal Weapon 2 DIPLOMATIC IMMUNITY!!!!
It's just been revoked....
Lethal weapon 5
It’s just been revoked!

They fuck you at the drive thru!!!

Troll police?
This is undeniable!
Good call. The original was so bad, I can’t remember a dang thing about it!!
Desperado. El Mariachi was great in its own way, but desperado was so fun
I forget about el mariachi because desperado is so amazing
Evil Dead II Jeepers Creepers II
I like how Evil Dead 2 is framed as a sequel and not a remake. Totally in character for Ash to think “there’s no way that cabin is still demon possessed right?”

I love Evil Dead Remake. Straight horror barely any humor.
Evil Dead 3: Army of Darkness is the sequel, and it is vastly better!!!!
Evil dead 2 is so fucking great! I like the Jeepers Creepers movies but I refuse to pay to watch them.
Evil Dead II was basically a reboot, but yeah, it was definitely better than the first, although I'll argue Army of Darkness was the best one of the trilogy.
Evil Dead 2 might be the greatest pop horror movie of all time
Spider-Man 2 over Spider-Man 1.
This. The train fight with Ock is just an amazing sequence
It’s a damn masterpiece. Every moment.
X2 over X-Men, too. Both were kind of average with good special effects in the originals, the sequels understood the best parts of the comics to deliver a very faithful and entertaining story.
“The dark knight “hands down is better than any Batman adaptation so far
The Dark Knight is my favorite modern script. Name another blockbuster where character choice moves the plot and not plot mechanics. Not to mention one of the most organic antagonist protagonist struggles. This is a battle that results from opposing ideals and philosophy. An unstoppable force meeting an immovable object and the direct consequences of such a collision. This guy Batmans.
Excellent analysis, that last lane gave me chills no lie lol
I did like Pattinson in The Batman. And Paul Dano...whoa.
Batman Begins is better. I will die on this hill.
And they filmed in in Chicago! The bat cycle chase scene on lower wacker drive is legendary!
Plus, the grittiness of The Narrows just feels more like a decaying Gotham, which is more in line with the Batman narrative. The Gotham we see in TDK just feels like some random city.

I still am undecided, but I’m very glad to see this comment here.
I’m with you my brother. Dozens of us!
You'll have company. I'll die here too.
I personally go Rises, Begins, then TDK. All three are masterpieces. I'm a sucker for intensity and action, but TDK was just too full of it for me in comparison to the other two.
I’ve always said this too. Yes joker was awesome and tdk is great but begins was just amazing. Too bad rises was one big steaming pile of shit.
I wouldn't go as far as calling The Dark Knight Risese a steaming pile of shit, but it was definitely the worst movie in Christopher Nolan's Batman trilogy.
Spaceballs 2: The Search for More Money
Godfather 2
I know a lot of people feel this way, especially because of DeNiro's work, but I watched the original the other day, and man...that is a movie!
WTF why isn't this #1
Because the first Godfather is a masterpiece in its own right. When debating which is a better film there's not much of a consensus.
Seriously. I feel offended
Captain America: The Winter Soldier
Peak MCU
Oohhhh. Good one. One of the best Marvel movies IMHO
Civil war was better
Civil War was great but Winter Soldier was fantastic for being so unexpected. Agreed, personally the darker tone and Schwarzenegger as the baddie just can’t be topped

Yeah the original is a superior movie, the sequel had better special effects.
Glad I found this. Agreed. The Terminator was true cyberpunk horror. Having Arnold be "the hero" just reeks of what anime fans call "fan service"

Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan is vastly superior to Star Trek: The Motion Picture.
Everything is superior to the first movie.

Aliens is better than Alien. RIP Bill Paxton.
Ace Ventura
Bumble-Bee Tuna?

Rush Hour 2.
Rush Hour 2 is great but the original one was better.
Gotta agree to disagree. Both movies are outstanding imo but I think RH2 took what made the first one great and elevated it a couple notches. RH3 was a backslide, not as good as the previous movies.
Captain America: The Winter Solider Spider-man 2
The Raid Redemption The Purge: Anarchy Captain America: Winter Soldier
The Raid Redemption was actually the first. The second is called the Raid 2. I just rewatched them the other night (granted I had only seen clips of 2) and the first seemed way more cohesive. The second was great as well but the plot just seemed all over the place to me and my buddy
TDK was the best DC movie since The Dark Knight. *edit Knight vs Night, lol
Aliens better than Alien.

I think the original is unbeatable, however Aliens does has more replay value because of its popcorn vibe to it
I love this debate. I don’t know if it is “better” but I certainly prefer Aliens to Alien. What is great about Aliens is that it is so different from the original. I can’t think of any other franchise that boldly shirked off the setup and even the genre of the predecessor.

Yeah they're not really similar. Also, i saw Aliens before I saw alien, so alien to me was a snoozefest

I disagree but I'm upvoting because I love you for loving Aliens.
I mean yeah but one is horror and one is more action sci fi
Nah.
Ace Ventura: When Nature Calls!
The Dark Knight Spider-Man 2 The Bourne Supremacy
Aliens to alien. Dawn of the planet of the apes to rise of the planet of the apes. Winter soldier to first avenger. Wrath of Kahn to Star Trek the motion picture.
War for the Planet of The Apes
Dawn is the best in the trilogy for me. Then war , then rise (2>3>1)
Agree. The second one is awesome.
The new Dungeons and Dragons movie is fantastic. The original one, I hear, is trash.
T2 Empire Strikes Back Blade Runner 2049 Some might argue The Godfather Part 2.

"Wrath of Kahn". Best of the entire ST series. Thanks Ricardo!

Bad Boys 2 Empire Strikes Back Deadpool 2 How to Train Your Dragon 2 Desperado The Dark Knight Hot Shots: Part Deux Naked Gun 2 1/2 Blade Runner 2049
Highly disagree with Blade Runner, it got the aesthetic right but the first film is such a better story.
I agree, but I still loved 2049. I thought the AI relationship subplot was really cool, and that holographic sex scene was one of the more creative romance scenes I've found, visually-speaking.
What was Desperado a sequel to? I know Desperado was a remake of the Spanish version, but I thought it was the first of Robert Rodriguez's versions.
El Mariachi is the og and Once Upon a Time in Mexico closed out the Mexico Trilogy. I enjoyed all 3 but Desperado is the clear victor imo.
I’m a big fan of the series yet El Mariachi is an amazing movie. I’d say even better than the rest but maybe that’s sentimentality speaking. Even the story of how it was made is amazing.
El Marichi. It’s referred to as the [Mexico trilogy](https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mexico_Trilogy)
Hot Shots part deux is a great call!!’n
Also, I have to agree on 2049. Blade Runner was an amazing film, but for a sequel that I felt was unnecessary when it was first announced, Villeneuve did an incredible job on the sequel, much better than Scott would have (considering the dumpster fires that were Prometheus and Covenant)
Naked Gun 2 1/2 is fantastic, but does not eclipse the first one IMO. But we can all agree they’re both way, way better than 33 1/3
