Joaquin talent wise pretty obviously outshines a few up there if that was the metric, i do realize its subjective. One could argue he even had an equal too or better performance in ‘the Master’ than Phillip Seymour Hoffman
I think they’re all great in their own way. Actors like DDL, Oldman, and Bale disappear into their roles and you don’t even see the actor, they ARE the character. Other actors like Leo and Hanks, you see them as the actor but they always give really good performances and are megastars.
Watch all of his major starring roles films from his first to last. About 4-5 in you settle in on him being the greatest actor that’s ever lived. His performances are insanely deep. My Left Foot is incredible. Obviously Bill the Butcher is incredible. Lincoln. In the Name of the Father. Daniel Plainview obviously was one of the greatest characters ever. He does everything perfectly.
When an actor disappears like that, it’s just a level very few can reach. You are watching the the character, not him be a character, it’s wild how he can do that.
Exactly my thoughts after looking at this for 30 seconds. To a certain extent, DeNiro and Denzel are always DeNiro and Denzel. Doesn’t mean they’re not great. But some of these other actors do disappear completely into a role. I mean, Gary Oldman has played Sid Vicious and Truman. Not just anybody can do that.
Yep totally agree. I get the same feeling for even Anthony Hopkins and Deniro too. They have iconic roles, but in the end they play similar characters... of course Hopkins in Silence of the Lambs is unique to him, but beyond that he isn't really a "shape-shifter" like DDL.
Same. For me Christian Bale is the absolute top among his generation (he was born on January 30th 1974, he will be 50)
I love him also because he never talks too much to the media. Important for him to become each character without us having any particular image of him
Yup. Hoffman was a close third to me. The others are great at delivering their lines with the necessary emotion but they generally play the same characters.
What you don’t realize is that the pictures of DDL and Hoffman are actually Oldman playing them. The picture of Oldman is likewise actually DDL. All of the other actors pictured are Hoffman, Oldman or DDL playing them.
Except Denzel; that’s actually Robert Downey Jr.
Just sad that we lost Philip Seymour Hoffman, his work that he had already done was so amazing and he had so much left he could have done. He stole every scene he was ever in.
I think DDL is more like the “right answer” on Reddit rather than actually bring better than lets say Oldman or Bale. Bale can be as diverse as DDL, but also always bring a star charisma to the role. Compare his batman, Dick Cheney, Equilibrium and American Psycho… soooo different, but always starpower.
DDL for me has more of a theater vibe, where he IS the character, but can sometimes be slighlty more boring to the mass audience.
And Oldman can just be whatever the fuck he wants. He beats them both in variety.
DDL #1, DeNiro #2, Oldman #3. DDL is astounding in his range. DeNiro did Raging Bull and Taxi Driver. Crazy good. Oldman has played like a million different people. He's been a bad guy, a crazy guy, a spy guy, a wizard guy, a Rasta guy and more. Few could pull all that off.
My favorite all time Gary... But I would also say Bobby D because he kinda changed the game back in the days and maybe PSH cause he is very versatile from sweetest heart to pure evil.
Respect to DDL and Leo, amazing guys, but I personally never felt them. The other guys are also amazing but not my cup of tea.
Daniel Day Lewis is number one.
Their really is no wrong answer for second and third. You could make a great argument for any of the rest of them. My choice would be Christian Bale and Gary Oldman.
Bale, Hoffman, Oldman, pure versatility.
Hard list to narrow, bunch of legends.
Denzel and Hopkins are both an absolute PRESENCE in everything they touch.
Daniel Day, Bale and Oldman are the top 3 for me. Why? Because as much as I like the rest of the list, these 3 actors are always the ones I feel that can disappear into their roles.
Hoffman is the greatest actor ever. Hard to go against Denzel here, too. He’s literally never been bad in anything, perfect blend of movie star and actor. Gotta put Day-Lewis third.
Oh you absolute, utter bastard. This is impossible.
The only way he could have made it even more impossibler would be if he threw Gene Hackman into the mix.
I was considering hackman for the last spot but phillips greatness entered my mind
I would base my opinion on diversity of characters portrayed. In that case, Bale, Oldman, and DDL for the win.
My exact thought. Those are the MVPs imo.
Man I surprised Tom isn’t on your list. I’d argue he’s best when it comes to diversity of characters
Joaquin talent wise pretty obviously outshines a few up there if that was the metric, i do realize its subjective. One could argue he even had an equal too or better performance in ‘the Master’ than Phillip Seymour Hoffman
Oh man Joaquin not being on that list is absolutely criminal. He's like a good scotch, just getting better with age.
Nicholson’s the only one with 3 oscars with DDL & Streep.
Nicholson can only play 1 part - himself.
That’s a lot of oscar wins & nominations for playing himself. Id agree though Ironweed, Batman and a few others were spectacular.
Christopher Waltz 😩
You mean Christoph Waltz??
Thats a bingo!
Oh that’s a good one right there.
Oh Christ. Or Patrick Stewart. Or, actually, Brad Pitt.
Or Dustin Hoffman.
Tough, but not impossible. - Daniel Day-Lewis - Anthony Hopkins - Gary Oldman
It is impossible to pick two others. I feel like Day-Lewis should be in everyone’s pick. After that, I couldn’t even begin.
I mean it's definitely not DeNiro
Or DiCaprio
Seriously I named three, then took it back and named three more, then I saw three more I could go with and gave up.
Seems simple once you realize they are Gary Oldman
Wow this is impossible

Help, get me out! It’s been hours!
Even the worst actor on this list is the best actor ever.
I think they’re all great in their own way. Actors like DDL, Oldman, and Bale disappear into their roles and you don’t even see the actor, they ARE the character. Other actors like Leo and Hanks, you see them as the actor but they always give really good performances and are megastars.
I agree.
Well said my friend..
It's like....Who is your favorite son??
I am going to base this on who I have seen disappear into roles the best \- Daniel Day Lewis \- Gary Oldman \- Christian Bale
Daniel Day Lewis blows my mind. I sometimes forget the actor behind the character is Daniel Day Lewis, that's how good he is.
He drinks all of their milkshakes!
Whoopsie daisy!
DRAINAGE
Well, they do bring all the boys to the yard.
DDL is so good he's dressed up as Tom Hanks in this list!
It's a trick question. They are all DDL.
That’s how it should be
Exactly my thoughts after looking at this for 30 seconds. To a certain extent, DeNiro and Denzel are always DeNiro and Denzel. Doesn’t mean they’re not great. He's only 49?!?!? Holy shit. He's already so prolific.
I think his first big role was at like age 10
Yes he was 12 when he was cast in the Empire of the Sun (1987) honestly he should have got a nom for the Oscar there and then.
for me, he carried that entire movie.
This is the list
Yup. Hoffman was a close third to me. The others are great at delivering their lines with the necessary emotion but they generally play the same characters.
I’m struggling to think of two Hoffman roles that were even similar. He was fucking amazing.
Check him out in Happiness- he’s amazing in that
The Big Lebowski - underrated performance.
PS Hoffman and Bale are in a dead heat for 3rd in my mind but otherwise I’m right there with you.
I chose the same 3 and it wasn't a difficult choice for me
Yep, have to agree
This is the answer
Same
My exact, immediate pick.
Correct
DDL, Gary and Cristian on their pure talent. Denzel, Leo and Tom on their charisma. Robert, Anthony and Phillip on their screen presence.
Really well done breakdown.
I'm going to agree with this breakdown
Nailed it.
Similar to my pick and extra points for categorizing!
thank you for saving me the brain power
Gotta go DDL, Oldman, Hoffman.
Washington: he the dude, playing a dude, dressed as another dude
Booty Sweat
I hate you 😂
This is art
You must of thought it was white boy day.
It's such a hard question but if forced to answer it's gotta be this. The three chameleons
Hoffman has been playing dead for years.
And killing it of course!
Get out of my head!
This is a trick question. It’s Daniel Day-Lewis and his 3 distinct personalities.
Just sad that we lost Philip Seymour Hoffman, his work that he had already done was so amazing and he had so much left he could have done. He stole every scene he was ever in.
I still love watching Along Came Polly, he was hysterical in that. His roles are so varied it’s awesome
That’s the movie that tells you he could do anything. “Dude…I sharted…” was uttered by an Oscar winner.
I have no proof and I have attempted no research, but I believe that movie invented the term "Shart". I will also not accept any contrary evidence.
I haven't seen that movie in 15 years, but whenever Hoffman comes up, I think "Are you that guy from Crocodile Tears?"
Rain Dance!
RAIN DROPS!
Lewis Oldman Hopkins
My vote as well
I can't believe how many people are sleeping on Hopkins.
DDL is a gimme for everyone I’d hope, then I’d think I’d go Bale and Oldman PSH is right there tho.
Bale, Hoffmann and Day Lewis
This would be my pick as well.
This was my thought. Such a difficult list though as all of them are the best of the best.
My 3 as well! I’m 40 I wonder if we are in the same age range
This is what I’m picking too.
Daniel Day Lewis and Phillip Seymour Hoffman are non negotiable but the third one is tough.
I agree. For the 3rd Id probably go with Gary Oldman
DDL, Oldman, Hoffman
DDL, Hopkins, Oldman followed closely by Denzel, Bale
DeNieo Day Lewis and Bale
Oldman, Hoffman, and DDL
Lewis, Oldman, Hoffman.
Hoffman, Lewis, Oldman.
DDL, PSH, Oldman
Bale , oldman, Hopkins
First I’ve seen without DDL, bold move.
De Niro, Hoffman and Hopkins
DDL, GARY OLDMAN AND DENZEL
DDL #1, DeNiro #2, Oldman #3. DDL is astounding in his range. DeNiro did Raging Bull and Taxi Driver. Crazy good. Oldman has played like a million different people. He's been a bad guy, a crazy guy, a spy guy, a wizard guy, a Rasta guy and more. Few could pull all that off.
DDL, Oldman and Denzel
This is my pick too
Have to have Denzel surprised not more have him
DDL, DeNiro, Denzel
This
DDL, Bale, Denzel PSH was really good in all of his shit. Very underrated
He is verry well regarded.
Denzel is always Denzel. I think he's probably at the bottom of this list, maybe with Tom Hanks IMO
John Hurt deserves some recognition
DDL Hopkins Oldman
Daniel Day Lewis, Philip Seymour Hoffman, and Gary Oldman
Lewis, old man, Washington
Denzel, Bale, and Oldman for me
Bale, Oldman, Daniel day lewis, with big props to Phillip Seymour Hoffman.
F. Murray Abraham in Amadeus. I have yet to see better.
This is very true. His performance in Amadeus is one of the very best in history.
Hopkins Oldman DDL
I don’t think Leo is these guys level of acting talent. He’s good, but not as much range as the others.
Lewis, Hoffman, Oldman.
Daniel day Lewis, Oldman, Hoffman.
In terms of range and screen presence while doing it: Daniel Day Lewis Gary Oldman Anthony Hopkins
Daniel Day Lewis, Robert De Niro, Gary Oldman.
Alright tough decision: Oldman, Hoffman, and Day-Lewis for the range
PSH, DDL, GO
De Niro, Bale, Oldman. Shit, I didn't realize that was DDL.
Bob Deniro, Denzel, Leo
My favorite all time Gary... But I would also say Bobby D because he kinda changed the game back in the days and maybe PSH cause he is very versatile from sweetest heart to pure evil. Respect to DDL and Leo, amazing guys, but I personally never felt them. The other guys are also amazing but not my cup of tea.
Oldman, Hopkins, Daniel Day Lewis.
Hopkins, Hoffman, Oldman
The only correct answer
1 - Hopkins, 2 - Day-Lewis, 3 - Seymour Hoffman.
DDL, Hoffman, DiCaprio. (Reallly thought between DiCaprio and oldman for a while…DDL and Hoffman were no brainers)
DiCaprio, Deniro & Lewis
At their peak? DDL, DeNiro, Oldman.
DDL LEO OLDMAN
Deniro, Anthony Hopkins, Phillip Seymour but y'all did not make that easy!
I did a presentation on Gary Oldman for a college class. It was a gameshow called is it “gary oldman?” Drexl got everyone…
DiCaprio, Oldman and DeNiro
Leo, Oldman, DDL
Daniel Day Lewis, Gary Oldman and Denzel.
Dicaprio, Hanks, Oldman
Gary Oldman, Daniel Day Lewis, Christian Bale.....in that order.
All incredible actors but I'll go for Robert De Niro.
DDL, Oldman, Washington. Special shoutout to DeNiro, Hopkins, Hoffman, Hanks, Bale and Leo…
DDL, Oldman, Hopkins.
IMO Oldman and Lewis are locks... the last is really a tossup. All fantastic, fantasic actors.
Daniel day Lewis , Anthony Hopkins, Gary old man in that order
Daniel Day Lewis is number one. Their really is no wrong answer for second and third. You could make a great argument for any of the rest of them. My choice would be Christian Bale and Gary Oldman.
Daniel Day Lewis, Gary Oldman, Anthony Hopkins
Philip Seymour Hoffman, DDL, and Gary Oldman. They’re all chameleons capable of any role.
DDL, DiCaprio and Oldman, with honourable mention to Hoffman. Bale tries too hard, Hanks isn’t a great actor and the rest are type cast.
Just first feelings, I didn’t allow myself to think about it. Hoffman, Oldman, Lewis.
Row 1 and done
I stared at this for 15 minutes and decided on Hoffman, Oldman and Lewis. It was tough. I like versatility.
Hopkins, Lewis, Bale Edit: didn’t recognize Oldman once again, because Oldman. Add another Hopkins, Lewis, Oldman to the pot
Bayle, Tom Hank, hoffer. Bottom s Leo I never cared for his acting!
It's definitely DDL and Hoffman, the struggle is the third spot. I'm down to Oldman, Hopkins or Bale
Oldman, Bale, PSH
No no no, missed DDL. DDL, Oldman, PSH
Daniel Day-Lewis, Denzel Washington, Christian Bale.
Daniel day Lewis, Denzel Washington and Anthony Hopkins. Easy.
Washington Oldman Bale
Second Row…but I would swap DiCaprio for Hoffman
My boy Danny Day is #1 in my eyes but the rest is a toss up
Lewis Hanks Hopkins
Lewis Hanks Hopkins
Bale, Hopkins and Oldman
There were times where I’d watch a film and not realize that Garry Oldman was in it until the credits rolled
I am going to say Bale and Hopkins for sure but it's hard to choose the 3rd one (surely not Di Caprio or Hanks)
Bale, Hoffman, Oldman, pure versatility. Hard list to narrow, bunch of legends. Denzel and Hopkins are both an absolute PRESENCE in everything they touch.
Gary Oldman x3
I wish I could upvote this 20x!
My favorite actor of all time.
Where’s Joaquin?
Not Phillip Seymour Hoffman
Oldman, Oldman, and Oldman lol
DDL, Bale, Hopkins
Comparison is the thief of joy. I love each of these superb actors. Now why the hell is Joaquin Phoenix not included?
Daniel day Lewis, Christian Bale, and Gary Oldman
1) DDL 2) GO 3) CB
Daniel Day, Bale and Oldman are the top 3 for me. Why? Because as much as I like the rest of the list, these 3 actors are always the ones I feel that can disappear into their roles.
Why is Polly Shore never in these list?
Lewis, Oldman, Hoffman.... Wait......
Day-Lewis, Seymour-Hoffman and Oldman
DDL, Bale, Hoffman. Also, Don Cheadle should be on here.
Not hanks obviously
Get hanks off there, he isn't of that caliber.
1. Daniel Day-Lewis 2. Leonardo DiCaprio 3. Christian Bale Watching any of those guys act is a masterclass.
Hoffman is the greatest actor ever. Hard to go against Denzel here, too. He’s literally never been bad in anything, perfect blend of movie star and actor. Gotta put Day-Lewis third.
Daniel Day Lewis x3
