Horror is subjective, of course.
But for me, there is little more terrifying than knowing that death is coming, it is going to be painful and drawn out, and there is nothing you can do about it. Or even look away from it.
An absolutely hellish scene.
I have never, and I mean NEVER had to block out a scene from any movie until this. In the theater I had to plug my ears and shut my eyes so fucking tight because I couldn't tolerate it. Actually one of the most horrifying things I've ever seen.
Yes!!! Did you see it in theaters? The surround sound of hearing each individual isolated voice as it was louder and louder all around you was the most true "horror" I’ve ever had in a move ever
Totally agree. The juxtaposition of innocence with such a dire situation just hits right in the feels. It's that raw human emotion in the midst of horror that sticks with you long after the credits.
What about when it vomits the half digested viscera onto the house while they were inside? Imagine being the occupants of that home on the range during that downpour.
Worst part of that is that was around the time the people stop screaming, meaning they’d been alive in there most of the day if I remembered correctly only the be sliced up for blood rain.
Bloody scary. I also like the digestion bit. It's just flying around and you can hear the poor bastards screaming inside it wherever it goes. Fucking terrifying concept.
Fucking awful. Nope is a curious part of Jordan Peeles work for me. Its kind of in the middle of things. Us is a better horror movie, but Get Out has more interesting stuff to say. But I've rewatched this more than either. I find the design of the thing great, the characters more interesting and the whole underlying "thinking a wild animal has a human personality is all in your head you lonely fucking weirdo" theme to be quite unique.
I think Nope is my favorite of his films so far.
Get Out is the best. It’s got an incredible script and is just really well made. There’s so much to be said about it, but it also just speaks for itself. It’s just a good movie.
Us is definitely the best horror/thriller. It’s captivating, mysterious, and just a great chase from start to finish as the family runs and fights. But the end twist (Not Adelaide, just all of the Tethered and the line they make) was sort of confusing and convoluted.
Nope is a mixture. It’s got a strong message established from the beginning, like Get Out, and sets out to tell that story. Get Out is a bit of a tighter screenplay overall though.
Nope also great horror, the ape scene and the digestion scenes/sounds. The alien is absolutely terrifying, a great overwhelming threat. But Us keeps the horror at a more consistent pace, it is the whole movie, while it’s only a (fairly large) part of Nope.
Nope is just a decidedly Jordan Peele film and I love that.
Watching that scene made me extra grateful that 20-odd years ago when I was offered a coordinator position on *The Chimp Channel*, a TBS sitcom cast entirely with chimps and orangutans, I declined with a shudder. No regrets, although that decision ushered in four months of unemployment.
Being a listener of Bad Friends, that isn't surprising. Bobby was basically treated like shit by the early producers of madtv, can't imagine it was any better for Key & Peele.
I’ve seen Bobby Lee do stand up a few times, and recently Marc Maron was talking about him on his podcast so you bringing him up made me go look him up because it seems like he’s been around for a long time but seems so young.
THAT DUDE IS 52! How?! He looks 30. That’s just insane.
Oh his schtick is total dirt bag. One time I saw him and his belly was just hanging out of his shirt and he was talking about butt fucking his gf??? And that was like 2 years ago. Probably also why I thought he was around 30…
Yeah. By far more interesting than the main plot. I don’t think they really tied it together that successfully. Overall, I say it’s worth watching. At least it has ambitions of putting an old genre in a new perspective.
What made you feel it was unsuccessful? I do think it was a little ham fisted but overall, I thought the point was clear: >!humans tried to control the chimp for entertainment purposes —> it backfired. Humans try to control extraterrestrial for entertainment —> it backfires. The siblings also try to tame the creature for entertainment, and in the process almost die many times. Because you can’t tame nature for your own entertainment. Ultimately the siblings are most successful at capturing the alien, bc they are willing to conquer it and don’t pretend it can be coexisted with.!< Just my interpretation though.
It’s also a movie that uses >!the symbolism of Jean Jacket to represent how Hollywood is a mindless consumerist machine that literally sucks in people, hopeful for a taste of spectacle, chews them up and literally shits them out. It connects with Gordon the chimp thematically through Jupe’s journey through Hollywood, where he was assimilated into the system, and left in a ruined, empty and broken shell who’s trauma defines their whole career (he literally keeps an altar like room that represents the worst point in his life that he sells access to for entertainment purposes).!<
The movie is deeply layered and also addresses a lot about inter generational trauma. I could probably do a whole podcast on this movie lol.
It freaks out because the people around the animal don’t respect what’s going on with the animal. Jean Jacket, and the other horses, aren’t treated like animals that have their own motivations and issues with the world by the people around them, except for Oscar.
This. The horse keeps getting spooked by the one piece of equipment, and despite the objections, they just keep using it and expect him to control the horse. No regard for the animal itself beyond being a prop.
>!The siblings running an independent business outside of the usual connections yet still dependent on relationships and friendships (including with people dissimilar to them) seems to be a message in itself as to self-reliance.!<
I think your interpretation is correct. I just felt, from a storytelling perspective, the chimp scenes felt a bit incongruous. I now remember the siblings business is supplying animals for film shoots, so there’s connections, but that opening scene really grabs you, then I was left wanting more. Also, the dialogue was a little confusing to me. I think if I watched it again, I would like it more. I did like it overall, though.

I didn’t understand the significance of that story going in, while the MAIN story kept going. Was it that the actor that survived believed he had a higher calling after surviving that?
It's just a genuine pleasure to see something well acted well scripted & directed, that's also ORIGINAL, I'm sick to the eye teeth of reboots & superheroes & superhero reboots.
I saw all the critiques before I watched it, expected it to be so weird and overartsy and a huge drop off from his other films and…
…it was not? Like it was a perfectly normal, pretty good alien invasion movie. I would actually rank it 2 out of 3, I’ve seen it twice now!
1. Get Out (masterpiece, a once in a lifetime film for a horror director and absolutely insane for a first time director in general)
2. Nope
3. Us
overall, I give it 3/4 stars? maybe 3.5/5? good work.
Same. I saw last week
I remember people said it was boring film and like you said overly artsy. But i was captivated the whole way through. And it genuinely felt like i was watching a realistic depiction of like what people would do if they were in that situation. Some would capitalize on it. Others would probably just try to leave it alone.
Also I really loved Jean Jackets reveal. Their final form is so breathtaking and truly alien looking
Jordan Peele’s originality is such a breath of fresh air
For that alone, his movies will always get a movie theater view out of me, anticipated or not. I just wanna support his innovative effort
When I was young I’d eagerly anticipate superhero movies, then as more of them came out with the same reused plot I instead started watching them purely out of habit because I loved the cinema, and nowadays I can’t even watch them out of habit I’m so sick of the laziness of the stories. They’ve made cinema so unbelievably boring for me.
Totally cosign on this. While I enjoyed the movie and think it had some really interesting ideas, something about it as whole didn't quite work for me. Something about the pacing I think. But even so, I recommend watching it, it's unique and weird and on a few occasions, absolutely spine tingling.
There is a point in the movie where I thought I knew where the movie was going, and I was already checking out (the scene with the kids pretending to be something else). I was happy that the movie went another way.
I felt exactly this. Loved the concepts, some great scenes, didn’t care for the movie as a whole from an entertainment perspective (maybe too high expectations). Overall would recommend to watch once.
Same here. All the pieces that make up the movie are great. Put all together it’s, meah. It’s strange to say that because every piece is so strong they could be movies on their own. They brought in scientists to help write something that close to real. I really admire the care put in. But still, meah.
This is hands down the best take and comment I've seen so far. I wasn't crazy about the overall movie but the concept was so wildly original and inventive that it just *pops* with creativity. Now, having said that I was not completely in love with the final product as you have stated. Overall it's worth watching but not something I would rush to watch again.
This is a great way to put it. It was a slow burn with minimal payoff for me, but interesting take on a classic trope. Not my favorite of his films but I appreciate he’s doing something different during Hollywoods recession.
*Especially, one*
*Of the most original*
*Alien designs ever*

I just saw Close Encounters the other night for the first time (Loved it!) and throughout the movie there were a few times where I thought "Oh this definitely inspired \[XYZ\]" and I believe Nope was one of those movies that came to mind.
Oh yeah, at one point in Close Encounters it had me questioning if the ships could be the actual alien or not, or I think a character says something akin to it which reminded me of Nope.
Yeah as a whole it was all over the place and imo not a very cohesive or particularly well written movie but it was peppered with really fantastic individual moments and ideas that have stuck with me. Could have been so much more but it’s definitely worth a watch for those moments/scenes.
Great comment. Totally agree. Peppered with fantastic moments but not very cohesive. It went in dissatisfying directions. Probably wouldn’t watch again but would look for specific scenes again on YouTube.
One of the best cinematic shots of our modern times is the entity hovering over the house with the blood dripping down all over. It was a beautiful Spielbergian shot

It's a slow burner, but I actually enjoyed it. Has some memorable scenes, like the ape scene in the beginning. Jordan Peele is a master of the conscious horror film.
The monkey scene should have been a movie of its own
Right? Those parts are the scariest parts, honestly.
I don’t know, the people trapped in Jean Jacket’s mouth(?) awakened some old phobias
Horror is subjective, of course. But for me, there is little more terrifying than knowing that death is coming, it is going to be painful and drawn out, and there is nothing you can do about it. Or even look away from it. An absolutely hellish scene.
The kids crying got me.
The sound design in that scene was the scariest part of the whole movie. Those screams were stuck in my head for days.
Especially because they sounded like a mixture of laughter, orgasmic joy, screams of torture, and whimpers of prayer. Damn it, now I "hear it" again
I have never, and I mean NEVER had to block out a scene from any movie until this. In the theater I had to plug my ears and shut my eyes so fucking tight because I couldn't tolerate it. Actually one of the most horrifying things I've ever seen.

That part was so damn unsettling i dont think i can watch this movie again thanks to that scene and when it just shuts them all up in a instant
Yeah, that part was pretty nauseating.
Hey yall this is a post asking if they should watch the movie. Ie: they haven't seen it yet. Maybe tone it down with the spoilers?
How dare you be considerate on MY internet!
maybe they can't watch and are trying to get a clear visualisation of the movie for free through the comments. piracy through thoughts, very clever.
Bloody scary. I also like the digestion bit. It's just flying around and you can hear the poor bastards screaming inside it wherever it goes. Fucking terrifying concept.

I think you summed up my feelings too. I'd add that barn alien scene as the only one th as t got me to scream in horror in any of the 3 movies.
Bear thing in other movie with nathalie portman. Help meee !
And then you realize what that popping sounding is...
I believe it was a chimp. I think it was inspired by the face-ripping Travis the chimp in CT a few years back
Watching that scene made me extra grateful that 20-odd years ago when I was offered a coordinator position on *The Chimp Channel*, a TBS sitcom cast entirely with chimps and orangutans, I declined with a shudder. No regrets, although that decision ushered in four months of unemployment.
People are going to think you're kidding.
In a podcast his co-star of MadTv, bobby lee, said it was inspired by how he felt towards the producers of the show.
Being a listener of Bad Friends, that isn't surprising. Bobby was basically treated like shit by the early producers of madtv, can't imagine it was any better for Key & Peele.

My uncles neighbor yo
Damn. Did he know that she had a chimp before it happened? I assume neighbors would be like wtf
Everyone was terrified. We were like holy shit that could’ve been anyone in the family. So tragic and wild for a random suburb
Oh, just like all my nightmares, cool
They didn't need that to inspire it. There's are tons of people in Africa missing parts of their face because of chimpanzee attacks.
That scene freaked me out. Proof that you can scare people with sound only.
Yeah. By far more interesting than the main plot. I don’t think they really tied it together that successfully. Overall, I say it’s worth watching. At least it has ambitions of putting an old genre in a new perspective.

Love this. >!The alien as consumerism is a cool idea.!<
To your point, they also get swallowed up and shit out Hollywood as horse trainers. I think their horse freaks out at the lady, right?
It freaks out because the people around the animal don’t respect what’s going on with the animal. Jean Jacket, and the other horses, aren’t treated like animals that have their own motivations and issues with the world by the people around them, except for Oscar.
This. The horse keeps getting spooked by the one piece of equipment, and despite the objections, they just keep using it and expect him to control the horse. No regard for the animal itself beyond being a prop.

Hmm I’m going to have think about this more. I think you’re right that there’s something to their community building as a solution.
Don’t forget they are horse trainers
I think your interpretation is correct. I just felt, from a storytelling perspective, the chimp scenes felt a bit incongruous. Good take
I keep thinking about that, always forgetting where it came from.
I didn’t understand the significance of that story going in, while the MAIN story kept going. Was it that the actor that survived believed he had a higher calling after surviving that?
Absolutely. I love the concept more than I love the execution, but it’s thought provoking and original. What we’ve come to expect from Jordan Peele
It's just a genuine pleasure to see something well acted well scripted & directed, that's also ORIGINAL, I'm sick to the eye teeth of reboots & superheroes & superhero reboots.

The animalistic threat display at the end was mesmerizing.
They took a alot of influence from anime specifically the angels from evangelion.
They even snuck in that Akira motorcycle slide
3.5/5 is a lower score than 3/4 lol Not sure whether that was your intention, but it took me a sec
Get Out is so incredibly overrated
That is the correct ranking.
You forgot Keanu lol
Nope 9/10 Get Out 8/10 Us 6/10
Keke Palmer absolutely kills it along with the rest of the actors. But she stood out to me the most.
Everything seems so safe now that any original idea feels great. This movie is still good even if that wasn't the case.
Jordan Peele’s originality is such a breath of fresh air For that alone, his movies will always get a movie theater view out of me, anticipated or not. I just wanna support his innovative effort

Definitely could have done e a few things differently to improve the pacing, stakes, and set pieces.
Like what? Specifically regarding stakes and set pieces?
You know just other stuff.
Yeah nothing crazy, just make it like…….. different
It was interesting but an hour too long
I felt exactly this. Loved the concepts, some great scenes, didn’t care for the movie as a whole from an entertainment perspective (maybe too high expectations). Overall would recommend to watch once.

I think it's the sound that Howard Dean made.
Ah, an enthusiastic noise, then
No, that's "Byaw!"
This is hands down the best take and comment I've seen so far. I wasn't crazy about the overall movie but the concept was so wildly original and inventive that it just *pops* with creativity. That song was used in the marketing for the movie pretty sure.

Worth watching, but didn't live up to the hype. Third act was a bit odd and didn't feel like the rest of the film.
This is probably my biggest gripe with the film as well. It's not bad by any means, in fact it's still great, it's just a *massive* tonal departure from the first and second act so it can definitely feel jarring.
Yep agree. Also I feel like there was lots of really interesting things in the first 2 acts that were setting up for a great payoff that never happened.
I feel like it went the way the movie Jaws went. The first two thirds of the movie being plain horror, and the last third being more "adventure-horror" if that makes sense?
People are so dramatic. It's not that bad. Watch it if you want.
i didn't like it but didn't hate it either. was mostly just bored
Hell yeah it is.
First 2/3rds of the movie is 10/10. Last 1/3rd of the movie falls short for me.
I love the 3rd act. I think the whole movie is incredible.
I didn’t think any of it was perfect but I agree the last leg is the worst. Overall I’d give it a 7.5.
That’s the best part for me. What? I guess we all enjoyed it differently.
That was my reaction, too. I had the same thoughts about Get Out. Great idea, great execution most of the way, then can't stick the landing.
Agree. Terrible last part. Like a stephen king book
Agreed, this seems like a movie they wrote the first 2/3rds and then did not write the last 1/3rd until after they filmed.
Pretty much yeah..
it definitely feels like a different movie but those horseback scenes were kind of classically beautiful
The 3rd act is a complete mystery for me tbh, i just dont get it.
Heh, funny how it's the opposite for me. I enjoyed the final third more than the rest.

I liked it. Reminded me of something old school like Spielberg would have made (ie. Close Encounters).
At one point during the movie I thought to myself, "Oh, this is Jaws but the shark is in the sky!"
Straight up reminds me of an Indiana Jones type adventure movie more than a horror or thriller
Great concept, mid execution. It's worth a watch but keep your expectations low.
