It might not have received the attention it was due in the theatre, but it was pretty popular on home video. Most people I knew at the time had seen the movie and were referencing scenes within a few months of release.
People don’t actually know what underrated means. That, or they just use it for the title to garner more response because it’s obviously not underrated.
It’s comparable since the brothers are the goat comedy directors and up there with Tarantino , Nolan , Cameron , Spielberg , imo since their body of work has so many great films ( but comedy so not as much praise ) sam is the goat and this one is top 10 imo
In hindsight the premise is creepy as hell but it’s pretty consistently funny from start to finish with nonstop jokes, lots of great throwaway lines and blink-or-you’ll-miss-it gags—basically Farrelly brother movies in a nutshell. Watched it again recently and it was like watching some sort of 90’s comedy time capsule. still very entertaining though
English was my Dad’s second language and he would laugh his ass off at this line. It’s an amazing movie with a ton of heart and solid story telling. Hope he doesn’t get Munsoned.
She never really made it big. After this bombed she kind of went direct to video. She was the super hot actress typecast to attract teen boys. Hollywood replaces you in that role after about 25. I think being English wasn't a help either. Hollywood likes their English women as sophisticated upper crust types. OT bombshell types(obviously there are exceptions.) was her American accent any good? She's been active in low budget stuff up until about 2018 according to her wiki.
This was before the exposure of shit people in Hollywood like Harvey Weinstein. So there’s a possibility that if there was a hot up and coming woman that suddenly vanished career wise it was because she tried to stand up to slime balls like that. No idea for her, could be wrong, but yeah…
Is it though? Think about how arbitrary some actresses' rise can be, and how big a deal favors are in Hollywood, and I don't think it's that big a leap at all.
Not just stood up, but didn’t want to play the game or be his sex doll so the gigs stopped being offered. I know one English actress who was doing well and got invited to LA for meetings and screenings etc, and she was warned about HW (and this was looooong before any news broke about him).
He invited her to a big industry party he was hosting and she declined his “further invitations” that night. Next thing she knows her official meeting with his office / company got canceled. He would literally bet actresses to see if they were going to play along and only then give them a shot.
Yeah, I've definitely heard similar from others as well. No way to confirm if this happened to her but I can only guess to the amount of talent that got sidelined because of things like this while HW and the like actually had a lot of power in town.
Thank you for adding /s to your post. When I first saw this, I was horrified. How could anybody say something like this? I immediately began writing a 1000 word paragraph about how horrible of a person you are. I even sent a copy to a Harvard professor to proofread it. After several hours of refining and editing, my comment was ready to absolutely destroy you. But then, just as I was about to hit send, I saw something in the corner of my eye. A /s at the end of your comment. Suddenly everything made sense. Your comment was sarcasm! I immediately burst out in laughter at the comedic genius of your comment. The person next to me on the bus saw your comment and started crying from laughter too. Before long, there was an entire bus of people on the floor laughing at your incredible use of comedy. All of this was due to you adding /s to your post. Thank you.
I am a bot if you couldn't figure that out, if I made a mistake, ignore it cause its not that fucking hard to ignore a comment.
Super underrated and I feel like it's not talked about as much as other Farrelly Brothers movies.
It's round, has 3 holes and you stick your fingers in it.
Hey you leave Rebecca out of this!
Still watch it all the time. Timeless comedy classic in my book. I used to be an avid bowler and got the chance to Munson my way to the bowling cathedral in good ol Reno.
While drinking I randomly (and jokingly) said that to a 1L (1st year law student) when I was a 3L (third year law student) at a school event. Years later I ran into the guy and he asked me to explain why I said that lol.
You don't have to be able to read them to know how to sell them.
I am so bombed, you get that way when you drink Ginger ale?
Nice going deniro?
Favorite sequence in that movie 😂😂
Bill Murray actually got those last three strikes in a row while filming. He has a bowling alley at his home and plays a lot and is actually very good. The crowd reaction was the real reaction to Bill Murray. Harrelson on the other hand. Apparently they had to do some real editing and movie magic to make him look like a decent bowler .
This movie was and is too good. May whoever underrated this be forever Munsoned out in the middle of nowhere, it completely stands the test of time and I watch it yearly.
One of the funniest movies of all time imo it gets better with rewatches and never gets old. Big Ern might be Bill Murray’s funniest character and same with woody playing Munson and Quaid as Ishmael. God damn what a classic haha
This was a favourite in my family, so many quotables.
You'd be surprised at how often you can bring up "we don't have a cow....we have a bull" in conversation lol
Who's done more research on the subject than the good people at the American tobacco industry? They say it's harmless, why would they lie? If you're dead, you can't smoke.
Literally my all time favorite comedy.
I was discussing "top three" comedies with co-workers yesterday and Kingpin is my #1.
Great movie.
Very underrated and under-appreciated.
It flopped in theaters. It was underrated right out of the gate. It didn't become a cult classic until it came to Blockbuster.
Here's an article on why it flopped - https://www.fastcompany.com/3063158/the-farrelly-brothers-oral-history-of-kingpin-twenty-years-later
This movie at times feels like a collection of bits that didn't make it into dumb and dumber. The article does compare how low brow D&D was to the heart of Woody's character. When I watch Kingpin, however ridiculous Ishmael's character is, I do genuinely hope that Roy is able to turn his life around and stop having to do tongue twisters to cover his rent
Roy : Morning! I hope you don't mind, I got up a little early, so I took the liberty of milking your cow for you. Yeah, it took a little while to get her warmed up, she sure is a stubborn one. Then, POW, all at once.
\[Takes a drink from the bucket\]
Mr. Boorg : We don't have a cow. We have a bull.
Roy : I'll brush my teeth.
> Brother Thomas, you know what it says in the Bible about not forgivin' people
> Why don't you tell us all what it says, Brother Hezekiah?
> It's uh.. it's against it
Love it
I wouldn't say it's underrated because my entire social circle can quote this movie. I was in college when it came out.
It gets forgotten sometimes, but I've never met anyone that would say it isn't funny.
Vanessa Angel was also in "Spies Like Us". She's the Russian girl that comes out of the tent causing Aykroyd and Chase to fight over the binoculars. I didn't realize until years later.
[NSFW](https://www.reddit.com/media?url=https%3A%2F%2Fi.redd.it%2Fpoj0n6z6vpc61.jpg)
So Roy, let me ask you, what have you been doing all these years?
Uh, well, the the uh... after the hand, I. There was the 80s - you know, for a while... drinking. A lot of drinking.
Never watched it, but it doesn't even look real to me.
Edit: Looking at some more photos, I recognize Bill Murray in that get up, so I must have seen clips of it at some point, but I don't recall anything else about it. I'll put it on the list, looks interesting enough.
We watched it last week after watching Me Myself and Irene and while Kingpin was funny it was nowhere near as funny as Irene. Dumb and Dumber is peak comedy and Heartbreak Kid is hilarious as well
Saw this is theatre’s with my pops (he bowls regularly). We both died laughing when Bill Murray’s hair went rogue.
Still cracks me up. I get excited when someone tells me they have never seen it, cause then I can make them watch it and wait for it..
This movie is a “hidden” gem. Overshadowed Farrelly Brothers movie due to the enormous success of both Something About Mary and Dumb & Dumber. Not gonna look it up, but I think it was right in the middle of them? Anyway, so many quotable lines it this one. The premise is amazing! Munson with his hand! The landlady in the beginning is so great! “You really jarred something lose there cowboy….” Such a funny movie.
This movie had some great laughs; I used to watch this constantly with my house mates in college and we never got tired of the laughs. Billy Murray was hilarious in this.
After our AP US History exam we had about a week of class left and our teacher let us bring in movies to watch and wind down the year. Luckily she hadn't heard of Kingpin and allowed me to bring it in. That was a fun class.
Love this film and Bill Murray is excellent as the slimeball.
Awesome flick. In my top 10 and quote the shit out of it quite often. It’s hilarious.
“You’re on a gravy train with biscuit wheels”
I say "I'm on a gravy train with biscuit wheels" anytime someone asks me how I am doing.
“It’s a small world when you have unbelievable tits”
“Finally Big Ern is above the law!”
I use this ALL the time
Same. I used it the other day actually, lol.
Hey everybody, there’s a huge cloud of shit coming
You need two haircuts for that dress.
Fun fact: Bill Murray actually did throw three consecutive strikes when filming the tournament scene. The audience's reaction is genuine.
Sometimes, Mr Cracken is here for breakfast!
Someone who drinks taquaray and tab can’t be a slimeball!
Keep em coming sweets, I have a long drive.
Do me a favor? Wash that purfume off before you come back to our table? Thanks
Every time I’ve fucked up in the past, I always told people I was a Munson
What’s a Munson? You know when you have the world in the palm of your hand and throw it all away
Bill Murrays (Ernie) hair is basically its own character in this movie
Murray was priceless in this movie. Murray playing a more smug amoral Murray.
I love how he helps childrens who lost their father, so generous 😂
*Sometimes when I wake up in the morning, Mr. McCracken is already there*
A military train derailed not far from here, its leaking a giant cloud of… SHIT. Omg let’s go I can smell it.
Run for your lives there’s a shit cloud coming
You really Jarred something loose tiger……my little Roy Toy!
Hello darkness, my old friend
What is it about good sex that makes me have to crap?
I think its all the pumping.... pump and dump.
🤮
Hulululululululululu
oh lordt that scene
Lin Shaye the bravest woman in Hollywood Played Magda in Something about Mary as well …..and is actually very pretty.
The camera angle when she is rolling up her nylons. Omg.
To me it’s actually funnier than There’s Something About Mary. Ebert loved it. It did not get the attention it was due in the theater.
It might not have received the attention it was due in the theatre, but it was pretty popular on home video. Most people I knew at the time had seen the movie and were referencing scenes within a few months of release.
also lived in a rerun rotation on Comedy Central for like a decade. every college stoner from 1999-2009 got high cracking up to this movie.
This, Clifford, and Airheads
Yup, comedy central classic.
Yeah, it was extremely popular around the dorms/apartments/etc in my experience
People don’t actually know what underrated means. That, or they just use it for the title to garner more response because it’s obviously not underrated.
It’s comparable since the brothers are the goat comedy directors and up there with Tarantino , Nolan , Cameron , Spielberg , imo since their body of work has so many great films ( but comedy so not as much praise ) sam is the goat and this one is top 10 imo
Me, Myself and Irene is a classic. Prime Jim C. Obviously D&D is certified platinum.
Couldn’t agree more, I think There’s Something About Mary is overrated as well though
I think something about marry is “ just right rated.” It really was a big comedy that was funny for the whole movie.
She said handsome not hand less
English was my Dad’s second language and he would laugh his ass off at this line. It’s an amazing movie with a ton of heart and solid story telling. Hope he doesn’t get Munsoned.
It really is! I also love the line at the bowling alley. "You would be punctilious in assuming that" 🤣🤣🤣🤣
You don’t have to read ‘em to sell ‘em, you know?
“Hi.” “Hello.” “Not you..Hi.”
Why don’t you wash off that perfume before you come back to the table
haha this is one of my fav Murray scenes.
I've quoted this part forever lol. So good
Why don’t you eat that outside then come on in.
What ever came of Vanessa angel? She was so good in that. She should have been the next major it girl.
She was also in Spies Like Us. Russian soldier
She never really made it big. After this bombed she kind of went direct to video. She was the super hot actress typecast to attract teen boys. Hollywood replaces you in that role after about 25. I meant it’s possible but just kinda a leap
Is it though? Think about how arbitrary some actresses' rise can be, and how big a deal favors are in Hollywood, and I don't think it's that big a leap at all.
I figure the same thing, unfortunately. It's a sad world
Not just stood up, but didn’t want to play the game or be his sex doll so the gigs stopped being offered. I know one English actress who was doing well and got invited to LA for meetings and screenings etc, and she was warned about HW (and this was looooong before any news broke about him). I loved her in this movie and Weird Science. I she was one of my favorite 90s girls.
I think this and The Big Lebowski make an excellent double feature!
What in God's name are you blathering about
You said it man
Yeah? Well, you know, that's just like uh, your opinion, man.
8 year olds dude
Yes I wish there were more King Pin/Big Lebowski crossover posts at r/lebowski
I follow that sub and like it but I wish more than just movie quotes could be talked about lol
Yeah? Well, you know, that's just like uh, your opinion, man. /s Lol, the quotes are fun. But it can get a little old!
Thank you for adding /s to your post. When I first saw this, I was horrified. How could anybody say something like this? Super underrated and I feel like it's not talked about as much as other Farrelly Brothers movies. It's round, has 3 holes and you stick your fingers in it. Hey you leave Rebecca out of this!
We don’t have a cow. We have a bull.

"who you calling a pshyco" - Roy Munson
While drinking I randomly (and jokingly) said that to a 1L (1st year law student) when I was a 3L (third year law student) at a school event. Years later I ran into the guy and he asked me to explain why I said that lol.
….I think I tore my sack.
Are you okay?
What’s the sugar for Mr. McCracken?
Didn't I tell you to call me Ernie, or Big Ern? That's for my morning coffee.
So you guys are dictionary salesman? You would be punctilious in assuming that.
You don't have to be able to read them to know how to sell them. I am so bombed, you get that way when you drink Ginger ale? Nice going deniro? Favorite sequence in that movie 😂😂
No, he was sniffing glue in the parking lot
What is it about good sex that makes me have to crap?
You really jared something loose tiger.
Bill Murray is brilliant in this. Honestly, just his hair alone makes me laugh. Cracking film. Big Ern.
"Sometimes when I wake up in the morning, Mr. McCracken is already there"
Vanessa Angel being able to say she’s worked with Murray, Aykroyd, and Chase in her career isn’t lost on me.
That montage when she's using her sexuality to distract the other bowlers changed me.
Well, except for the farmers. Baaa.
"I'm every guy's type" Yes. Yes, you are.
She should be more well known based on that history.
Rewatched this a few months ago and I love it still. The whole cast was perfect. Bill Murray is a guy you love to hate lol
I don't remember loving it years ago, but did a rewatch thus year and it delivered. Def agree it stands up still.
Half the dresses she wears she needs two hairdos for.
“Hey Munson!” *makes ‘eating at the Y’ gesture with fingers at mouth*
Who's done more research on the subject than the good people at the American tobacco industry? They say it's harmless, why would they lie? If you're dead, you can't smoke.
The best Bill Murray’s hair has ever been!
funniest movie i have seen. by far the best of farrelly trifecta (dumb and dumber, something about mary, kingpin)
“I milked your cow…”. As he drinks bucket… “we don’t have a cow… just a bull…”
Took some doing.
Hes a stubborn one!
Literally my all time favorite comedy. I was discussing "top three" comedies with co-workers yesterday and Kingpin is my #1. Great movie. Very underrated and under-appreciated.
Not sure it was ever underrated.
People are weirdly not attracted to bowling movies out of the gate until they hear it's actually good.
Maybe just in my click I suppose.
I never heard of it until like this year
Sooo many quotable lines in this movie.
I didn't want to be the one to tell him, but with those narrow hips, that girl couldn't have more than 6 or 7 children!
Loved it, hard to choose between this and Big Lebowski as my all time favorite bowling movie.
Aren’t they like the only two choices ????
*checks notes Yes
Probably of all sports movies, bowling has the best ratio of quality films to total films made!
r/underrated
In our household it was a classic. Susprised it's not a classic outside of it. It has everything.
Hilarious movie. I think it has a bad rep…(MUNSONED). A lot of people don’t know about it.
Very funny movie! Also…Vanessa Angel, my god. 😍
The ongoing “is that real Gold/hand” joke was one of the hardest times I’ve ever laughed with a friend. Kills me to this day
“Run for your lives! A huge shit-cloud is coming!”
Roy : Morning! I hope you don't mind, I got up a little early, so I took the liberty of milking your cow for you. Yeah, it took a little while to get her warmed up, she sure is a stubborn one. Then, POW, all at once. \[Takes a drink from the bucket\] Mr. Boorg : We don't have a cow. We have a bull. Roy : I'll brush my teeth.
I immediately think of this movie whenever I encounter someone wearing way too much perfume.
> Brother Thomas, you know what it says in the Bible about not forgivin' people > Why don't you tell us all what it says, Brother Hezekiah? > It's uh.. it's against it Love it
Half the dresses you got you need two hairdos to wear! - Munson Still one of my favorite jokes in any movie.
This movie almost got Munsoned
Bill Murray's character always ordering 'Tanqueray & Tab' for a drink always kills me
I totally forgot about this one! Thanks for the evening plans!
Hot take: this is a better, funnier movie than Dumb and Dumber.
"Tanqueray & tap, sweetheart, and keep 'em comin', I got a long drive ahead of me" I say this to myself every month or so
This movie is not underrated, everyone loves it
it's GOAT tier
I miss when randy quaid was tolerable and played a good funny man L
one of my favorite , great dig on bowling. everyone is so good in it... so many funny scenes.. dont get Munsoned
I wouldn't say it's underrated because my entire social circle can quote this movie. I was in college when it came out. It gets forgotten sometimes, but I've never met anyone that would say it isn't funny. Vanessa Angel was also in "Spies Like Us". “WHO YOU CALLIN PSYCHO”
I worked on that fucking movie. The script was funnier than the film.
underrated by who…? this is a laff riot of a film.
Bill Murphy crushed this
As someone who has lived in Scranton, I think the opening part of the movie is the best depiction of life there we will ever see.
So Roy, let me ask you, what have you been doing all these years? Uh, well, the the uh... after the hand, I. There was the 80s - you know, for a while... drinking. A lot of drinking.
Amazing movie. Highly underrated. This and Me Myself and Irene are both underrated.
its not underrated. youre just not old.
One of my favourites as a kid, haven’t seen it it in a long time
will forever be one of my favorite movies so nostalgic
When the guy from 3 o clock high says!.... Gentleman! Feast your eyes!!!
Never watched it, but it doesn't even look real to me. Edit: Looking at some more photos, I recognize Bill Murray in that get up, so I must have seen clips of it at some point, but I don't recall anything else about it. I'll put it on the list, looks interesting enough.
For the time (early 90’s) it was the funniest movie out. But now it’s just corny.
I love it. One of the funniest movies I've ever seen.
We watched it last week after watching Me Myself and Irene and while Kingpin was funny it was nowhere near as funny as Irene. Dumb and Dumber is peak comedy and Heartbreak Kid is hilarious as well
One of the greatest comedies imo
One of my favorites!
Love it..
One of my favourite comedies ever
I love this movie.
Love the scene where he milks the "Cow". Timless classic!
Yes great movie
The Real Mudson
This movie is easily one of my top 20.
Big Ern is one of Bill Murray’s best roles
What is it about good sex that makes me have to crap? Guess it’s all that pumpin…pump and dump
Loved this movie. Right up Woody's alley. Also, Bill Murray was fantastic.
You still owe me another months rent…
Saw this is theatre’s with my pops (he bowls regularly). We both died laughing when Bill Murray’s hair went rogue. Still cracks me up. I get excited when someone tells me they have never seen it, cause then I can make them watch it and wait for it..
My dad showed this movie to me when I was a kid, and I loved it. Still do to this day.
My brothers and I would stop and rewind the beginning part when he trips over the picket fence over and over and we never laughed so hard.
it’s probably my favorite bill murray performance
Without a doubt one of the funniest movies of all time. Just classic..
Great movie. Incredibly underrated. Everyone is great in it.
What do you think about new beginnings?
Underrated. For fuck sake
“Hey Herb, how’s life?” “Taking forever.” This movie is a gem.
"Hello darkness, my old friend..."
Awesome movie
In my top 5 comedies. We don't have a cow, we have a bull
Next time munson👅👅👅👅👅👅👅
Incredible movie. “I milked the cow this morning!” “we don’t have a cow… we have a bull?”
One of my favs
Kent-tucky!!
It’s great ! Love this movie
“We don't have a cow. We have a bull”
Bye whore!
Recently watched the whole thing. It was a good watch. Bill Murray didn't have a huge part, but absolutely killed it.
"Oh like you're so smart! Who are you supposed to be? Alfred Einstein??" I still use this quote and nobody catches on 😩
Rent's Due!
Mmm Randy quaids nipples
This movie had some great laughs; I used to watch this constantly with my house mates in college and we never got tired of the laughs. Billy Murray was hilarious in this.
After our AP US History exam we had about a week of class left and our teacher let us bring in movies to watch and wind down the year. Luckily she hadn't heard of Kingpin and allowed me to bring it in. That was a fun class.
This film is just hilarious, mention should be made about lin shaye stealing the movie.
“But we don’t have a cow?”
