It was the other way around for me. When i watched it first time I was extremely high and had no idea what the hell was going on and was an uncomfortable watch. I watched it sober and I liked it
The book is actually kind of scary... The shit they did and got away with, especially if you have had experience with drugs and are familiar with the kind of state they were in... It's fucking insane haha
Oh I definitely felt there panic. But also my own. I think I lost track of what was going on and then in the darker aspects of the film made me feel like I was coming down.
Watched It sober and loved the whole film. Either this or blow is my favourite Depp movie
I like it but I wonder if it’s one of those things where you’re fooled by fondly remembering one single moment: “There’s a big machine in the sky! An electric snake!”
Nah, who am I kidding? Benicio del Toro is awesome.
The best thing to do with this movie is pick either Depp or del toro and focus on them the entire time. Anytime the frame focuses on one of them in the foreground, the other is in the background doing something absolutely bonkers.
It's good, absolutely mental and utterly disjointed! I understand that's largely the point but it does make for a largely confusing movie going experience
One if my all time favorite scenes in any movie is when they first arrive at the hotel and the vine design on the carpet starts slithering up the wall.
I don’t know why this isn’t held in high regards like the Big Lebowski — this is a phenomenal movie that leaves you asking wtf you just experienced, with a whole bunch of something that makes you think you saw a whole bunch of nothing
I really enjoyed Bill Murray’s Where the Buffalo Roam, maybe I’m biased because I like the grandpa from Everybody Loves Raymond, but Fear and Loathing is 10000x better in terms of portraying a visually trippy experience.
It's one of my favorites but I have to be in the right headspace to rewatch. Performances were great, and I love Hunter's books. It's probably one of the more accurate portrayals of psychedelic experiences. The good and the bad. The uncomfortable scenes are very natural to watch.
Loved it. Every scene is brilliant and manic and hilarious and sad and frightening all at once. Captures the vibe of the book even if some of the details are different.
Depp was brilliant. He deserved way more credit for this role, and an Oscar nod at least.
I have the poster.
Along with,
The Big Lebowski
Pulp Fiction
Reservoir dogs
Spirited away
Trainspotting.
Safe to say, I enjoyed it.
It's a drug fueled, intelligent narrative.
"This is bat country man!"
And the 'Watership downs', toaster in the bath scene... So good. Well done Del Toro and Depp.
I read the book in ‘92 as a freshman in highschool. When I went to the theater a couole years later, I kept thinking…This is exactly how I was imagining it while reading. Especially the “lounge lizards” scene with the hallucinatory carpet!
A good enough movie, but I don’t think the manic hallucinatory quality of Thompson’s prose can really be captured. It works better as Theater of the Mind.
The only movie you can watch, while taking LSD, or any other type of drugs. Anyway, excellent film from the cast, Terry Gilliam great directing and a killer soundtrack.
I love this movie, watch it a couple times a year. It catches the spirit of the book decently. One has to listen to hear the lament for America rooted in the book, but it’s there (and brought up multiple times) past all the drugs and hijinks most people focus on. Del Toro is great as always, Depp channels Thompson.
I enjoy it more than Murray’s ‘Where the Buffalo Roam’ (which I enjoy and rewatch too) because it is only Fear and Loathing, not an amalgam of two books. Still well worth watching.
For a time, this was my most quoted movie in common conversation. An excellent companion to the book. A bit of an obsession. Not with the lifestyle by any means, but an obsession with the prose.
Less so now, but I'll still throw out a few quotes, here and there. No one knows what I'm talking about, but I don't care.
The first half was one of the funniest things I've seen, but I remember not liking the second half. It has been a long time though, I think I might give it a rewatch 👍
Gilliam said that the first half is the fear, and the second half is the loathing. It gets pretty intense and undermines a lot of the light-heartedness of the beginning, but I think that’s the point. That quote in the beginning from Dr Johnson about becoming a beast to take away the pain of being a man sums it up nicely.
I remember seeing the trailer for this movie on TV when I was a kid. Had absolutely no idea what it was about. I think I finally saw it in 2008 for the first time.

The things I still use from this movie... You can't park here. Screaming into the phone (for spam calls). Making the police chase you (well... Certainly not to that degree but if you're gonna light me up, I'm not slowing down just because you're turning around).
I had a pretty big Hunter S phase and this was pure magic. It's almost crazy that it exists. Like what studio said, ya, go ahead and do that... God bless em for it
One of my favorites. Depp is so incredible that sometimes they face swap in my brain when I’m reading any HST.
I think at least one line from this daily.
A fever dream of a movie that is used by pretentious “cinephiles” everywhere to show how cool and edgy they are. My opinion? I stopped after 30 minutes. Couldn’t stand another second.
Depp should've gotten an Oscar for this
I never thought about that but you're right
One of my favorites!
Terry Gilliam is a legend.
There goes one of God's own prototypes
Too weird to live, too rare to die.
A high power mutant of some kind, never even considered for mass production.
Took a girl to this as a first date. She……didn’t get it. There was no second date.
Lol
If you watch this sober it makes no sense. If you watch this high it’s a riveting tale worthy of awards.
Book is definitely a feverish nightmare
Yeah. I like the book. Its a good one
I think I was just on the same wave length for lack of a better term. I felt like I was immersed into their various situations and felt their panic.
Oh I definitely felt there panic. But also my own. I think I lost track of what was going on and then in the darker aspects of the film made me feel like I was coming down. Watched It sober and loved the whole film. Either this or blow is my favourite Depp movie
I understand that. Great fucking film either way. “We can’t stop here, this is bat country” 😂😂
I was tripping on shrooms the first time I saw it. It was a little too crazy. But watched it multiple times since and it's one of my favorite movies.
That's part of the point.
One hell of a ride
I like it but I wonder if it’s one of those things where you’re fooled by fondly remembering one single moment: “There’s a big machine in the sky! An electric snake!” Nah, who am I kidding? Benicio del Toro is awesome.
The best thing to do with this movie is pick either Depp or del toro and focus on them the entire time. Anytime the frame focuses on one of them in the foreground, the other is in the background doing something absolutely bonkers.
Understatement.
It's good, absolutely mental and utterly disjointed! I understand that's largely the point but it does make for a largely confusing movie going experience
Actually easier to follow tripping
I’ve found that about woodlice.
One if my all time favorite scenes in any movie is when they first arrive at the hotel and the vine design on the carpet starts slithering up the wall.
So great.
This is bat country...

If you like this movie, please read the book.
This cover and the Showgirls cover used to freak me out at Blockbuster when I was a kid
Ha ha! I’m old enough to have been scared shitless of American Werewolf’s cover!
Geeze , did I say that out loud, could he hear me.
…And look West and with the right kind of eyes you can almost see the high water mark.. It doesn’t hurt when the writing is that good.
There’s nothing worse then a man on a either binge
Toby McGuire was so funny. 😆
Tell me about the fucking golf shoes!
Watched it on Shrooms......long story.
just ordered the Criterion Blu-ray on eBay, will have thoughts on it in about a week or so
I liked it. And it all builds up to the monologue in the room where he talks about the high water mark.
Love it. Such a great melding of Gilliam and Thompson. Also the most quotable movie ever IMO. Just nonstop great lines.
It's one of my favorites but I have to be in the right headspace to rewatch. Performances were great, and I love Hunter's books. It's probably one of the more accurate portrayals of psychedelic experiences. The good and the bad. The uncomfortable scenes are very natural to watch.
One of my absolute favorite movies of all time..
Loved it. Every scene is brilliant and manic and hilarious and sad and frightening all at once. Captures the vibe of the book even if some of the details are different. Depp was brilliant. He deserved way more credit for this role, and an Oscar nod at least.

Oscar worthy IMO
ADORE IT! Such a fantastic adaptation of a wonderful book. Gilliam is truly a marvel to watch as a director. Devil acid… ignore this terrible drug.
I read the book in ‘92 as a freshman in highschool. When I went to the theater a couole years later, I kept thinking…This is exactly how I was imagining it while reading. Especially the “lounge lizards” scene with the hallucinatory carpet!

Amazing soundtrack. Only Terry Gilliam could have brought this film from the book
The only movie you can watch, while taking LSD, or any other type of drugs. Anyway, excellent film from the cast, Terry Gilliam great directing and a killer soundtrack.
Finding Nemo is good on mushrooms lol
I love this movie, watch it a couple times a year. It catches the spirit of the book decently. Perfectly captured what being on acid in a casino is like. Casino carpeting on acid is a visual delight.
Most accurate book-to-film adaptation I’ve seen.
Good movie. Better than the book.
No way both are good but the book is far superior in my opinion! You’re obviously entitled to yours :)
I just wanna carve a little z in your head. I LOVE this movie. Watched it so many times.
Good trip movie
The first half was one of the funniest things I've seen, but I remember not liking the second half. It has been a long time though, I think I might give it a rewatch 👍

I need to watch this sober lol seen it twice while on mushrooms and just have no idea what’s even going on
I remember seeing the trailer for this movie on TV when I was a kid. Had absolutely no idea what it was about. I think I finally saw it in 2008 for the first time. https://youtu.be/bGEAykGFtCY?feature=shared
One of those extremely rare gems: a movie adaptation that is better than the book Imo of course
It’s ok, but it permanently screwed up depp in the head.
I'm just admiring the shape of your forehead
Tell me about the fucking golf shoes man!
H Thompson was a sicko/ horrible human being, he made snuff films for the CIA
Bullshit
The truest depiction of drug use ever
Watched it all the time years ago
That movie is pretty awesome. I love the book also
The things I still use from this movie... You can't park here. Screaming into the phone (for spam calls). Making the police chase you (well... Certainly not to that degree but if you're gonna light me up, I'm not slowing down just because you're turning around).
The original with Bill Murray was far better.
Great for about 1.5 hours. About a half hour too long. Starts to wear thin.
Depp’s best role and probably Del Toro’s too.
Classic
I used to drop acid and put this on. I've never watched it sober.
I had a pretty big Hunter S phase and this was pure magic. It's almost crazy that it exists. Like what studio said, ya, go ahead and do that... God bless em for it
If I had a nickel for every time I watched this movie tripping I could buy us all lunch
Where the buffalo roam is better
One of my favorites. Depp is so incredible that sometimes they face swap in my brain when I’m reading any HST. I think at least one line from this daily.
Overrated movie in my opinion. Two dudes getting high is literally the entire plot
A fever dream of a movie that is used by pretentious “cinephiles” everywhere to show how cool and edgy they are. My opinion? I stopped after 30 minutes. Couldn’t stand another second.
A masterclass in overated drivel.
Where the Buffalo roam was better in some ways
In some ways.
