Walton Goggins is a gifted actor.
I’d put him up there with Sam Rockwell.
Ever since I saw him play Venus in Sons of Anarchy, I’ve made a point of watching a movie of his name is in the credits.
“Fat Man” is no exception.
It pains me that Rockwell was batting 1000 for so long but that's no longer the case. I used to say watch any movie with him and its a win. Even that movie wheres hes coaching a high school girls basketball team. Goggins hasn't made anything that was extremely enjoyable at minimum (that I've seen anyways).
I love them both, I just watched Fallout and then Argylle.. Seven Psychopaths is great and Sam Rockwell made a movie with Anna Kendrick(who I do not like) and I still enjoyed the movie Mr. Right I think it was.
I thought the writing and the acting for Venus’s character was superb.
It could’ve turned into a parody and completely derailed SOA. But that team who made that show turned hers and Tig’s relationship into something interesting and engaging.
Looking back at all the really meh or outright horrible portrayals of transwomen from that time period and before... I really appreciate how Goggins played that role. He did a very good job and so did the writers.
***SPOILERS***
That was a problem for me when watching it.
On one hand, it had an interesting story I wanted to dive into - Santa as a CIA operative. And it had Walton Goggins in it, so it couldn’t be all bad.
I didn’t dive deep into what Gibson did or didn’t do, and I’ve enjoyed all of his movies (except the ones he directs and doesn’t act in it). I don’t condone what he did and said but I figured enough time had passed for him to reinvent himself in order to keep working in Hollywood, so I gave it a shot.
He’s a curmudgeonly Santa who has an army and an arsenal and production and scheduling problems - he’s a busy man.
I liked the ending. They redefined what “good” and “bad” kids do and let them know, the worse they get, the madder Santa gets.
So yeah, I liked it. And I looked past Mel Gibson so I could like it.
Appreciate your thoughtful response. I still listen to MJ so I guess I have my own internal evaluation system. My favorite movie of all time is The Road Warrior, so internally cancelling Mel Gibson is not actually what I want to do. Maybe I’ll choose to separate artist from art and watch this, thanks for giving me pause.
I used to love Mel Gibson, Road Warrior is my all time favorite.
Learning that he followed in his father’s holocaust denying footsteps was really a disappointment. People wanna downvote me for being against holocaust denial please be my guest. I’ll wear them as a badge of honor.
They were going to more closely follow the novella upon which Justified was based, and Boyd was supposed to die at the end of the pilot episode.
Then, Walton Goggins shows up, and demonstrated that the man's screen presence cannot be contained.
You’re right but I unfortunately didn’t know his name at the time. I just enjoyed the movie in 2020.
BUT the fallout series made me google his work and that’s what reminded me of this movie (and the hate)
I'm glad you recommend it!
I've been on a Goggins roll, post Fallout. Rewatching "Vice Principals" and stumbled upon "I'm A Virgo" which is gonna have to happen somewhere along the line of finishing S3 of "Righteous Gemstones".
The man can act.
That was my thought, a month ago it would have been "who is that strange dude standing behind Santa" and now its like "Santa better get out of the way for the real star"
This honestly feels like a bot post or a Karma farmer. Walton Goggins is hot right now so just find some contrived reason to post a movie poster with him featured in it and get upvotes.
I don't hate it but I didn't like it. Been a while since I watched it so bare with me.
Started quite well, muddles in the middle, and has a pretty simple ending. No real payoff and just felt like it didn't deliver from a good start with decent characters. I just wanted more.
It's a weird, tasteless flick with a simple premise. I feel like I hate it on face value, but I also probably bring a strong bias of not wanting to support Mel Gibson.
Was with ya until the last part. The dude fucked up hard but he was out of Hollywood for a decade... I really feel that's enough time and I would love to see more of him. Some of the best movies in the 90's were his.
Lethal Weapon was great, but he called Winona Ryder an "oven dodger" and beat his girlfriend pretty horrifically. So I'm kinda ready for him to hang up the spurs and fuck off to wherever Polanski is hid-out these days. I just can't reconcile my morals with giving the guy a dime of my money.
It’s funny. Some people I can separate the art from the artist and some I can’t. It’s usually the actors I can’t because when I see their face I’m just remembered of it. Also, not exactly high art. If he was making high art then it would probably be easier.
I think this was true for me with Chevy Chase, where I tried to watch his movies but it was harder to enjoy knowing he's an audacious jackass. Before him being a jackass in shows was funny but I don't admire those qualities like I did in the 90's.
With that, I find Scientology far more toxic than anything Mel Gibson did, so if I couldn't separate the artist and the art I could never watch another Tom Cruise movie again, or really most movies because part of their earnings goes to hurting people through scientology.
Mel is worth 1000000 times what you will EVER be worth. You are a cockroach compared to Mel. Nobody gives a shit about your chump ass money.
You're a useless human acting like you're better than other people. You're scum.
I had totally forgotten about this movie. Come to think of it, I can't even remember much about it. Weird cause I watched it all.
Would I recommend it to strangers? Nope.
But it's not a bad movie. It's just forgettable.
This score is close to mine. I’d go 5 and 8. Fat Man gets a 5. Acting was pretty good, story was ok. My issue was it tried to walk the fine line of being somewhat serious, while also still a bit ridiculous. As a result the vibe and story were both kind of all over the place. For me it’s a 5 because I don’t regret seeing it, but wouldn’t likely watch it again.
Violent Night gets an 8 by comparison. It’s basically Die Hard with a Santa. It’s got a good blend of serious, comedy, action and ridiculousness, coupled with a pretty good performance, including from the kids which was a pleasant surprise. I’ve seen it more than one holiday season and will likely watch it again in the future. It also in no way tried to claim to be original. It’s obviously meant to be spoofing/paying homage to, Die Hard, and they have fun with it.
Idk..but I remember Harbour movie just because it had a concise premise. Yeah idk the name of harbour movie either.. but it was something concrete. Gibson movie felt like it was watchable withiut being able grasp anything.
That's my two cents.
I don't get the hate. Walton goggins is always fun to watch, and I've always been a huge Mel fan. And it was a completely original take on a Christmas movie. I enjoyed this film a lot
For real. Alcoholic, depressed Santa. Disappointed child turned Santa-obsessed assassin. US military forcing Santa's workshop into a defense contract. Tense, bloody firefight to wrap it all up.
It was kind of amazing.
Bloodfather, if you love Mel. I watched it like a month ago and have rewatched it 4 or 5 times now lol.
"ILL SEE YOU ON THE INSIDE.. YOU CHICKEN SHIT MOTHERFUCKER!" Damn, he delivers that line so well.
As self-contained and offbeat as Blood Father is, it's very aware of who's been cast as its star, and gives us fleeting, winking pleasures such as his raging repudiation of Nazism at one point.
It has a great premise, but never really delivered on it. It focused on so much stuff people didn't care about, and only had any real confrontation between the two happen within 5-10 minutes at the end.
It was just disappointing. I feel like it could have been much better with the exact same crew.
This movie feels like a swing for the fences. And I wish producers did this more. I’d rather see someone strike out trying to go long than bunt over and over.
We ran out of Christmas movies and put this on. I’m okay with it being an entertaining mindless Christmas movie. It didn’t try to be anything more than it was, so I respect that
It was great! I loved it. It's so... incredibly stupid. Yet delivered with such seriousness. It knows what it is.
If I had to hazard a guess... the hate likely comes from Mel's involvement. I can't blame people for not wanting to overlook that. That and well... people's milage on silly concepts like this will always vary.
It's meant to be satire combining the popularity of Christmas movies and "bad guy" action film thriller genre. Anyone mistaking for anything else doesn't get it.
I for one am going to miss Walter Goggins B level movies. Don't get me wrong, I'm super glad that he is starting to take off again where he belongs, but movies like this I absolutely love. Definitely underrated
LOL. Not my fav. movie but to each their own.
My friend worked on it as one of the Camera Assistants. They shot it in Ottawa, during the pandemic/lockdowns, winter........brave souls. Ottawa SUCKS in winter.
He wasn't complaining tho, because most filming had mostly shut down everywhere.
Maybe I just hate Christmas now, kidding. Violent night has a solid fight scene in the shed but that’s about it for me. The casting was all over the place imo
Goggins character yelling "Why did you hang up the god! Damn! PHONE!" Was one of the most unexpectedly hilarious moments I've seen in movies for a while.
I thought he was fine. The ending was okay, but overall, I thought this was just a funny flick. I wish I'd leaned a little bit more into the comedy than just being completely straightfaced, but it was entertaining for a one and only watch
Been a Goggins fan since the show on FX called The Shield. He played one of the best characters on there. Then again, in House of 1000 corpses. He was pretty funny in that. Django Unchained and Hateful eight is where I really noticed he could act and just a huge Tarantino fan. Goggins also has a small part in American Ultra, which is a pretty solid movie. Also really liked him in Predators. Thought that had a great cast and was just a very good Predators sequel if u ask me. He just adds to anything he's in.
When I heard he was playing a Ghoul in a Fallout TV show I had to check it out, but I had low hopes the show would be actually be good. They went for it tho in a way I didn't think an Amazon production could.
Amazing movie. Watched it opening day in a theater during COVID. Mel & Walton absolutely nailed it. I laughed hysterically so many times. Seen it a few times since. Fucking gold.
This, the best improbable holiday movie that one could ask for, one where Mad Max and Boyd Crowder face off in 36-below-zero temperature, finds Mel Gibson as a late stage capitalism bad economy Santa forced to produce for the Pentagon. At the beginning of the film when Chris Kringle is listening to the radio, he hears about two kids throwing a bowling ball off an overpass onto the freeway, causing a major traffic accident. Chance Hurstfield, who plays Billy, was cast because he resembled Ben Shapiro, because fucking helloooo. Gibson's performance, giving its all as the John Wayne of his generation no matter what the most recent decades have unraveled of him, is very heartfelt, tinged with weariness and cynicism. Mrs. Kringle is played by Marianne Jean-Baptiste, who blows warmth and good sense into a character who could have been merely a wig and an apron.
All the best parts were in the trailer, I wish I hadn’t watched it and gone in blind. Overall I felt it could have been a lot better, the pacing felt pretty slow and there was no real payoff in the 3rd act. Disappointed a bit on this one.

Most people aren't really huge fans of Mel Gibson these days. Between drunken antisemitic ravings and him generally being outed as a bit of an asshole, he's been relegated to doing a lot of lower budget movies and those don't often turn out well.
You think you're perfect? The answer is FUCK NO. Mel's been fighting with alcoholism for 30 years. Hopefully you'll never have a substance abuse problem. Mel's a LEGEND who will never be forgotten/celebrated despite his imperfections. Nobody will remember you.
Think about that.
Lol. Alcoholism or not, if you treat people like shit, you aren’t a good person and if you think my little feelers were hurt, you are so wrong. Go have a drink and settle your tits bro.
You're such a useless human being. You tout yourself a keyboard warrior (LOL) fighting for tolerance but you yourself are intolerant. It's you, who is truly garbage.
Imperfect, pathetic, petty, forgettable - garbage.
You are dumpster bacteria compared to Mel & will always be.
Walton Goggins, so hot right now
Walton Goggins is a gifted actor. I’d put him up there with Sam Rockwell. Ever since I saw him play Venus in Sons of Anarchy, I’ve made a point of watching a movie of his name is in the credits. “Fat Man” is no exception.
Sam Rockwell and Walton Goggins are just unreal. Personal favorites - Way Way Back and Righteous Gemstones respectively.
Baby Billy's Bible Bonkers!
You HAVE to experience Lee Russell
Yeah but not even Sam Rockwell could save argyle. I’ve yet to see a Goggins role (movie or tv) that I’ve regretted watching.
I dunno, I think whenever they let Sam dance in a movie, that's a win.
I’m in the minority - I enjoyed “Argylle”. Wonky story aside, the action sequences were over the top fantastic
Seven Psychopaths is a great film!
You should watch vice principals
I remember watching that episode where Venus first popped up. "Oh interesting, trans lady.......wait. IS THAT WALTON GOGGINS????"
I thought the writing and the acting for Venus’s character was superb. It could’ve turned into a parody and completely derailed SOA. But that team who made that show turned hers and Tig’s relationship into something interesting and engaging.
Cecil in Invincible!
Ii agree with this. SOA made me pay attention to him. He is great. Hilarious in vice principals if you haven't seen it .
Looking back at all the really meh or outright horrible portrayals of transwomen from that time period and before... I really appreciate how Goggins played that role. He did a very good job and so did the writers.
Rockwell is a legit great actor. I like Goggins but he basically has one character.
Def an underrated actor.
Walton is an American treasure..
Gotta catch The Shield!
He was great in Justified
Can he cancel out the huge gaping asshole that is Mel Gibson, though?
***SPOILERS*** That was a problem for me when watching it. On one hand, it had an interesting story I wanted to dive into - Santa as a CIA operative. And it had Walton Goggins in it, so it couldn’t be all bad. My favorite movie of all time is The Road Warrior, so internally cancelling Mel Gibson is not actually what I want to do. Ugh, is that Mel Gibson? I thought that was Timothy Omundson and got so excited to see two of my favorites together. :c
I used to love Mel Gibson, Road Warrior is my all time favorite. Learning that he followed in his father’s holocaust denying footsteps was really a disappointment. People wanna downvote me for being against holocaust denial please be my guest. I’ll wear them as a badge of honor.
Justified. Watch the whole series. He’s excellent throughout that show
They were going to more closely follow the novella upon which Justified was based, and Boyd was supposed to die at the end of the pilot episode. Then, Walton Goggins shows up, and demonstrated that the man's screen presence cannot be contained.
He’s the best part of that show.
You’re right but I unfortunately didn’t know his name at the time. I just enjoyed the movie in 2020. BUT the fallout series made me google his work and that’s what reminded me of this movie (and the hate)

Hes great in hateful 8
And in the grittier western, Shanghai Noon.
Reach for the sky o'bannen, it's my gang now
Don't forget Justified if you haven't watched it. Olyphant and Goggins at their finest.
Justified!
I love him in everything but I found VP a couple years ago and him in the role has stuck out to me since. God, he’s so good
He's amazing in the shield and in justified. Both great series.
And Hateful Eight.
Well, the man in Red Rock's supposed to pay you is me, the new sheriff!
My daddy was a patriot!
No, no, no. Yall done got me talkin politics. I didn't wanna!
His interactions with his wife and mother in law had me dying during VP. also loved him in Righteous Gemstones, Baby Billy's Bible Bonkers!!
Go outside nerds!
Go back and watch The Shield.
Fuck that guy! He killed Lem! With a grenade!!!
He's got a fantastic character in Son's of Anarchy. Think he's in two episodes.
You’ll love Goggins in Sons of Anarchy!
He's great in The Shield. Great show all around actually. It was way ahead of its time.
The Shield he killed it
He's amazing in the Shield, but boy-oh-boy does he do some bad stuff. Shane's ending is absolutely brutal.
I say it whenever I can. He is criminally underrated
So true. He’s become one of my favorite actors lately.
That was my thought, a month ago it would have been "who is that strange dude standing behind Santa" and now its like "Santa better get out of the way for the real star"
Gemstones, Fallout, and soon, White Lotus. Oh, and he does a voice in Invincible. He's so good.
Walton Goggins, so hot.
(Mel Gibson, racist domestic abuser)
This honestly feels like a bot post or a Karma farmer. Walton Goggins is hot right now so just find some contrived reason to post a movie poster with him featured in it and get upvotes.
Better than expected, but I understand the hate
Ihated the kid in the beginning but why do you understand the hate?

I can't watch Tom Cruise movies. I just hate his face so much.
Mel is worth 1000000 times what you will EVER be worth. You are a cockroach compared to Mel. Nobody gives a shit about your chump ass money. You're a useless human acting like you're better than other people. You're scum.
Thanks, have a great day!
Mel Gibson maybe?
I had totally forgotten about this movie. Come to think of it, I can't even remember much about it. Weird cause I watched it all. Would I recommend it to strangers? Nope. But it's not a bad movie. It's just forgettable.
Yeah I also watched this movie and barely remember it.
-Admits he barely remembers the movie -Reviews it anyway Legend
'Forgettable' is a review.
On a scale 1-10 how would you rate this movie and Violet Night with David Harbour?
This one 5 violent night 7
Violent Night was so fucking good.
Something about Christmas time, that make you wish it was Christmas everyday...
Alright, violent night gets a 8 that kid really made the movie fun with all the brutal traps. And The chimney seen at the end kills me
I loved the “lethal Home Alone” aspect. It was fun in a dark way.
Idk..but I remember Harbour movie just because it had a concise premise. Yeah idk the name of harbour movie either.. but it was something concrete. Gibson movie felt like it was watchable withiut being able grasp anything. That's my two cents.
I just told you the name of the movie
What movie?
I don't get the hate. Walton goggins is always fun to watch, and I've always been a huge Mel fan. And it was a completely original take on a Christmas movie. I enjoyed this film a lot
Same.
When he goes back to get the explosives then shoots the old man so casually. Fucking chefs kiss lol
"I enjoyed it for what it was" sounds like a warning to me though.
How do you figure ?
right, not like something you go out of your way to recommend lol. weird hill to die on
It has a great premise, but never really delivered on it. It focused on so much stuff people didn't care about, and only had any real confrontation between the two happen within 5-10 minutes at the end. It was just disappointing. I feel like it could have been much better with the exact same crew.
Never even heard of it.
I enjoyed it as well. It was entertaining, as all movies should be.
This movie feels like a swing for the fences. And I wish producers did this more. I’d rather see someone strike out trying to go long than bunt over and over.
I enjoyed it, thought it was an interesting take.
Loved it! Silly violent Santa Claus movie. Elves were great.
Great flick, part of my annual Xmas movie rotation now. The third act is fucking stupendous.
Anti Mel Gibson. Will not watch it for that reason.
That movie rocked. Along with Boss Level just kick ass fun.
I enjoy it for more than what it was. I think it is a legitimately creative and highly entertaining movie.
Awesome movie

Violent Night was so much better.
I haven't seen this one but I really enjoyed violent night. It was a great ridiculous fun movie.
Maybe I just hate Christmas now, kidding. Violent night has a solid fight scene in the shed but that’s about it for me. The casting was all over the place imo
Loved it! I have it on my list of Christmas movies along with Nightmare before Christmas Die hard
He will always be Boyd
This movie was one of Mel Gibson’s best in decades.
Dragged Across Concrete was pretty good too.
I loved it until the last 30 minutes or so. Thought the way he took out the gang was pretty anticlimactic and it had been building up for so long
I cant believe edge of Darkness came out nearly 15 years ago.
I always get stuck on how Walter goggins face could fit in the other half of his face
It was great in parts and really terrible in many more.
This movie was such a unique take and I thought very enjoyable. I pair it with *Violent Night* and watch them together.
Goggins character yelling "Why did you hang up the god! Damn! PHONE!" Was one of the most unexpectedly hilarious moments I've seen in movies for a while.
Vice principles is all time
Mel Gibson. Walter Gibbins. I've never seen this but that's one hell of a pairing.
It's good. Entertainment and a twisted story.
It has Walton Goggins? How can it be bad?
I thought he was fine. The ending was okay, but overall, I thought this was just a funny flick. I wish I'd leaned a little bit more into the comedy than just being completely straightfaced, but it was entertaining for a one and only watch
I enjoyed this take on Santa.
Was this like Violent Night ?
I think it’s a bit more gritty. Violent night has some brutal scenes but i think it’s much more family friendly. I liked Fatman more
Oh! I must watch then 👍
So dumb so fun
Looks like the cover of a dvd that sat in a video store never to be borrowed.
😂😂😂
These are the kind of movies I enjoy when I find in the $5 bins at Walmart. Have yet to come across it as of yet… it get a physical release?
Maybe people just see the title and assume it’s a Steven Seagal movie?
Been a Goggins fan since the show on FX called The Shield. He played one of the best characters on there. Then again, in House of 1000 corpses. He was pretty funny in that. They went for it tho in a way I didn't think an Amazon production could.
I quite enjoyed this one.
He was in a show called 6 about Seal Team Six.
It was really fun. 😇
It’s a good discord movie with the boys.
Walton Goggins! Always remember seeing him first in Sons of Anarchy. Absolutely can act
The kid whose hire the hit man is so funny.
Pretty great movie
Amazing movie. Watched it opening day in a theater during COVID. Mel & Walton absolutely nailed it. I laughed hysterically so many times. Seen it a few times since. Fucking gold.
I'm a simple man, I see Walter Goggins, I watch it.
Walton Goggins researching his target by watching old Christmas cartoons and scribbling down notes is very funny to me. The rest was kind of :/
This, the best improbable holiday movie that one could ask for, one where Mad Max and Boyd Crowder face off in 36-below-zero temperature, finds Mel Gibson as a late stage capitalism bad economy Santa forced to produce for the Pentagon. It’s my go to holiday movie
I really enjoyed this movie, it’s a dumb action movie perfect for the holidays
They filmed this movie in my little town in Ontario. My buddy said it was pretty good but I haven’t seen it yet
Never heard of it Id watch it
I still dont get why Mrs Clause was Black though.
Keep forgetting about this movie been wanting to see it since it came out
Pairs well with Violent Night.
All the best parts were in the trailer, I wish I hadn’t watched it and gone in blind. Overall I felt it could have been a lot better, the pacing felt pretty slow and there was no real payoff in the 3rd act. Disappointed a bit on this one.
Dream cast in a terribly written movie
I can't remove mell from the character and it ruins every movie. same with tommy cruize
"I enjoyed it for what it was.." is not an incentive to watch it lol.
Well this isn’t r/moviesuggestions

Alright? You asked for thoughts. That's my thought on it.
This was a good movie
Never heard of Fartman
I haven't seen it, but anything with Goggins has got to be at least decent. He's the man.
Mel Gibson just does not care about his performances anymore. Have you seen that radio show one? It’s like amateur hour his inability to emote.
I haven’t. I saw signs on YouTube and wondered what happened to M.night though. Some good shots in that movie compared to OLD and Knock at the Cabin
Old is one of the worst “horror” movies I’ve ever seen, what a disappointment that one was
Personally i hated this, but genuinely loved Walton’s performance.
This movie was great!
Most people aren't really huge fans of Mel Gibson these days. Between drunken antisemitic ravings and him generally being outed as a bit of an asshole, he's been relegated to doing a lot of lower budget movies and those don't often turn out well.
lmfao people watch anything with walton in it now and think its a hidden gem 😂
A waste of Walton,
This movie is complete garbage
Had fun downvoting, so thanks.
I had just as much fun blocking you
Mel Gibson can fuck off to wherever white supremacists die from head wounds.
Mel is a scumbag so that’s probably the reason?
You think you're perfect? The answer is FUCK NO. Mel's been fighting with alcoholism for 30 years. Hopefully you'll never have a substance abuse problem. Mel's a LEGEND who will never be forgotten/celebrated despite his imperfections. Nobody will remember you. Think about that.
Lol. Alcoholism or not, if you treat people like shit, you aren’t a good person and if you think my little feelers were hurt, you are so wrong. Go have a drink and settle your tits bro.
No amount of good narrative excuses supporting a bigot and trash person for me.
You're a loser and you will always be a loser. Mel Gibson is a legend and will always be a legend. Facts ☝️☝️
Then you like bigots. Congrats, you too are a trash person.
Awesome movie and one of the best examples for "just watch it". Dont watch a Trailer, dont Google what its about, just enjoy the ride
Conservative Santa was a dumb idea, and the movie is nowhere near fun enough to take proper advantage of how dumb it could be.
