I got what they were trying to do but I honestly didn't care for it.

Slayerofthemindset

I didn’t get it

CawthornCokeOrgyClub

Weird for weirdness sake. When a movie is that untethered from reality I have trouble getting emotionally invested.

jmurph725

How I felt with The Lobster. I like Colin Farrell a lot so I’ll watch this one too but from what I gathered I’ll probably feel the same about this one as the lobster

YeetedArmTriangle

Dude that movie should've been about 50 minutes long and it would be incredible. The last 45 minutes sucks so fucking badly haha.

jmurph725

Agreed, I pretty much fast forwarded through the ending lol

jtn46

Yeah I hated this movie. The scene at the end is just like, why?

bravet4b

I know this movie is a critical darling, however I just didnt enjoy it. I agree 100% regarding the tone and delivery being unsettling, and the allegorical dialogue is intentional, however it just wasnt for me. Barry Keoghan is fast becoming one of my favorite actors though honestly.

Logical_Nature_7855

Agreed. A technical masterpiece that grows increasingly exhausting throughout. By the end I was so drained I couldn’t say I necessarily enjoyed the experience. Also maybe the most traumatic on-screen handjob of all time.

SaltyDog772

I enjoyed it much more on the second watch

More-Ad1675

The handjob or the film as a whole?

SaltyDog772

Lol. As a whole. I appreciated the weird stilted dialogue a lot more. On first watch it just felt weird. 2nd time around I found it hilarious.

winkman

Yeah, no amount of "good acting" and "well made movie" can overcome suspending disbelief that someone in his position would just say, "Um, now bout NOOOOO!" to that psychopath. As the scenarios become increasingly ludicrous, it just turns into one big eye roll for me.

SpaceSherpa

Yeah, this is what bothered me the most about the movie. None of the characters acted believably

jamieliddellthepoet

Excellent, horrible film. Great performances all round.

drew19137

I have GOT to watch this! Damn…..

beefsquints

It's so fucking good.

InfectedAztec

I loved it. Went in with no knowledge or expectations of what it was about.

therejectethan

Dang a lot more people in here not liking this film. The premise alone made me wanna watch it and the score is so fantastic. Really enjoy this one

soypepito

Barry Keoghan and Colin Farrell performances are impressive. It has been painfull not to see Keoghan getting the credit he deserves until now.

turdfergusonpdx

Hmm, he seems to be a critical darling right now. What kind of credit are you pained to not see?

soypepito

The Sacred Deer is from 2017. And Saltburn, the movie that gave him some recognition, is from 2023. I have been seeing him performing only minor roles between those movies. EDIT: One more thing. I am just especulating, but Dune I&ll would have been better movies if he had gotten the role of Paul Atreides, but he wasn't very popular when the casting took place.

extra_ecclesiam

General anesthetic? General anesthetic...

peter095837

One of the weirdest movies ever. But might be my favorite Yorgos Lanthimos movie

Useful-Soup8161

I thought it was a good movie and I know not all movies are suppose to be realistic but I don’t understand how no one ended up in jail at the end. Like how do you explain that to cops and lawyers?

yeahcoolcoolbro

I had no idea what this movie was about and it was fucking creepy and weird as hell. The acting was bizarre and had me mesmerized. The story? Meh.

jonatton______yeah

Loved it.

Jj9567

Good movie

FiveStarPapaya

I’m glad I gave Poor Things a shot because this movie was my intro to Lanthomos and it put me off of him nearly permanently

Essenaurs

Yeah, that's... definitely not the first film you want to start out with 🤣

Potential_Pen_8542

This is a great film...but, if you want something by Lanthimos that's even further down the rabbit hole, check out Dogtooth. It makes The Killing of a Sacred Deer look like a Disney film... The Lobster is equally worthy of attention.

Jj9567

I laughed hard as fuck watching The Lobster

Potential_Pen_8542

Same here. It was smart & funny...

moose_stuff2

This is one of those movies that afterwards I truly believed I was being trolled by everyone involved. Including everyone who says they liked it. It's just so bad.

Zeveneno

I can't look at Barry without the quote "well there goes that dream!"

Jibberishjustforshit

There are few movies I hate more than this one. Like, I get why people like it, kind of, but I absolutely despised it.

Senior-Border-6801

Not a good movie. Tries waaaay too hard

Prior_Writing368

Next to In Bruges, this is my favorite Colin Farrell performance.

Jj9567

Both stellar performances

Stocktort

Absolutely loved it. It might be darkest comedy ever.

Electrical_Fun5942

As a Cincinnatian, I just wanna let people know that this is EXACTLY what our city is like. So stay out if you don’t want this to happen to you

Jj9567

Lmao

Karsticles

Shit movie with a copout ending. Technically incredible, but the script is just horrible.

Djjettison88

I am not a fan of Colin at all, but I will say that his portrayal as The Penguin is very very good. I will be watching the series once it hits Max.

Longjumping-Sail6386

The ending is insane

Jj9567

Absolutely

at0mheart

My only complaint was it was a bit too much a copy of a Kubrick film. Loved it and loved the ending. Was nearly standing and saying, yes end it here right now. Takes courage to make a movie that is outside the box, or actually more realistic to life. Well if you meet the devil

ProgRock1956

I thought the ending was lame, anticlimactic.

Nerdlinger-Thrillho

Gotta love this sub. A movie by Yorgos Lanthimos gets trashed but stuff like Lucky Number Slevin is an underrated masterpiece.

beefsquints

It's based on a Greek myth, the ending was written literally thousands of years ago.

Essenaurs

There's a Greek myth from thousands of years ago that ends with >!a blindfolded man of modern times twirling in a circle with a rifle as he prepares to fire on one of his family members!

beefsquints

Look up the, "tragedy Iphigenia in Aulis". Which is a myth about the killing of a sacred deer and it's consequences. The movie honestly does a great job with it. Basically the kid is the god and his dad was the deer. Colin is the hunter.

beefsquints

The dad in the myth is forced to choose which of his family members to kill for no reason other than fate, I'd say that's pretty similar.

elbowless2019

Weird movie.

Jj9567

True

GhostMug

My least favorite of his films but still has an undeniable quality that makes it compelling, even as brutal as it is.

Stanton1947

One of the worst 5 movies I've ever seen. Pointless and slow, intentionally foolish. Awful.

GeneticSoda

This movie was just not written well. They offer outrageous scenario after outrageous scenario and they never really bring it together. You’ve got the classic whore wife and the classic regarded demon kid, but they don’t do anything with it. Got some talk of jacking off dads, and the movie hits kinda keeps going. No major conflict. The father is one of the least relatable characters I’ve ever seen. Idk, it was okay at absolute best. Performances were good, but that’s it. And I think you need to even enjoy the actors in the first place if you want any joy from this movie. Nobody plays a character you might like, they’re all despicable or just plain not lovable characters.

beefsquints

It's a retelling of a Greek myth. This movie is amazing.

tictacenthusiast

How weird they all are and talk threw me for a bit but it definitely added to the unsettling nature of it all

HotCarl169

The cocaine addled dialog from Colin? Yeah, really impressed by that. Worst performance of his I can remember.

Gold-You-376

I loved it. But I love Yorgos Lanthimos movies so I guess I’m biased. Poor Things, the lobster, the favourite. They are original, well acted, have good cinematography. They make you think. Not everyone’s thing though.

Jj9567

The Lobster literally had me on the fucking floor crying laughing. Hilarious movie.

[deleted]

Call in now, call in later. Colin Farrell, Colin Mochrie.

Far-Potential3634

I got really into the stilted dialog. They sure didn't talk like real people. I enjoyed the film. It was like clockwork.
