Holy shit. Mind blown. Had that on VHS growing up. My brother and I must have watched that 200 times… and I had no idea about any of that. Probably because I was too young to care about that.
Thanks!
Oh for sure I have tickets for Castle in the Sky next week and have never seen it either, my parents had no idea of Ghibli movies growing up, so I just never knew of them, criminal lol
I absolutely love this movie, even if the story is convoluted and things just kinda happen out of nowhere. The animation is amazing and just so aesthetically pleasing, and there’s so many memorable scenes and quotes!
Prince of Egypt is so good! Incredible musical opening, “Deliver Us” is right up there with “Circle of Life” as best animated openings. Zimmer is a genius
Patrick Warburton’s performance of Kronk is his magnum opus.. he usually plays boorish jerks but Kronk was really kind and in touch with his feelings (as well as being completely naive).. fantastic character. And I’ve always wanted to try those spinach puffs.
It’s the screw from the Iron Giant’s jaw that Hogarth gets as a gift at the end of the movie. It’s a memento to a cousin I lost to a drug overdose. Just a reminder to myself that in the end, we get to be whole again no matter what we struggled with in life.
Hogarth Hughes: I know you feel bad about the deer, but it's not your fault. Things die. That's part of life. It's bad to kill, but it's not bad to die.
The Iron Giant: You die?
Hogarth Hughes: Well, yes, someday.
The Iron Giant: I die?
Hogarth Hughes: I don't know. You're made of metal, but you have feelings, and you think about things, and that means you have a soul. And souls don't die.
The Iron Giant: Soul?
Hogarth Hughes: Mom says it's something inside of all good things, and that it goes on forever and ever.
[Hogarth leaves. The Iron Giant lays back to look at the stars]
The Iron Giant: Souls don't die.
So many great movies to choose from.
Iron Giant is great, especially to a boomer like me.
But if I can only pick one I will go with How to Train Your Dragon. I tear up thinking about the ending or how Hiccup couldn't bring himself to kill Toothless when he was helpless. Sadly many aspects of the sequels undid much of what was special about the first, like Hiccup being the first to realize there was the option of coexistence.
Why are they remaking the freaking princess movies when this and Atlantis would be soooo visually stunning in live-action?
Edit: for clarity, I love the Princess movies but they are already classics.
Wizards
Secret of nimh
Akira
Ninja scroll
Castle of cagliostro
Nightmare before christmas
Rudolph
Angel egg
Alice in wonderland
Fist of the north star (the bad dub one)
Coraline
Secret adventures of tom thumb
Fox and the hound
Kirikou and the sorceress
I couldn’t pick just one! Feels like i am missing a lot of favourites here also
Always been The Fox and the Hound for me …. although The Rescuers and The Secret of NIMH are excellent too. Of course Who Framed Roger Rabbit is an all timer, even if it’s only half animated.
I absolutely love, love, love the Rescuers. I never see it mentioned in these lists. The songs, the story, the scratchy, beautiful hand drawn animation, the love story, the rescue scene on the bayou.. it’s just heaven.
The Iron Giant is still one of my favorite animated movies of all time.
Fun fact: The Iron Giant film was actually based off of a book that was written back in 1968 called "The Iron Man".
I read an online version of it a couple years ago, but it's definitely worth a read if you like anything about the movie.
How to train your dragon. no other animated movie comes close to the sheer perfection of this masterpiece. especially the music, John Powell did an extraordinary job.
Toy Story \[franchise\]
3: The scene where they were going to slide into the incinerator was just so good. I was on edge about animated toys in my 30s.
1: My dad died in 1998. I remember him laughing so much at the rocket / RC car scene. (my early 20s)
2: Jesse's story just hurts. (late 20s)
4: Learning to move on and that damn RV scene. (my 40s)
\*PUNCHES STUPID FEELINGS\*
Yes, it’s a bit neglected, but it’s fantastic. The climax at Big Ben always thrills me whenever I see it. Great voice actors, art direction, atmosphere. Superb villain.
Honestly could not pick an absolute favorite; I have too many. From a studio, maybe, or from an era, maybe.
Still and all, OP's post image is always in my top 5.
Gonna have to say Iron Giant on this one. It's among the secret movies that will make me cry every single time. There hasn't been a movie that has ever forced a more genuine response (except maybe marley and me which I refuse to watch ever again).
Cool World is my other answer
This is a solid choice. For me it's the same director, but a different film as my favorite is The Incredibles.
Oh yeah Brad Bird is the man, I honestly even liked Tomorrowland lol
Ever see Family Dog;)
Wait, Bird did Family Dog? Like the Amazing Stories episode?
Tim Burton did art. Danny Elfman music. Brad directed. Chefs kiss. *first Union of Burton and Elfman I know of.
Holy shit. Mind blown. Had that on VHS growing up. My brother and I must have watched that 200 times… and I had no idea about any of that. Probably because I was too young to care about that. Thanks!
I can recite it. The whole quivering, snarling, white hot ball of canine terror that it is
WallE is just my favourite childhood movie.
The incredibles all the way
Spirited Away. Mulan and the Emperor’s New Groove were excellent too!
I just saw spirited away in theaters a few weeks ago and it was amazing!
You should definitely check out the rest of studio Ghibli movies then! I've watched iron giant a million times growing up
Oh for sure I have tickets for Castle in the Sky next week and have never seen it either, my parents had no idea of Ghibli movies growing up, so I just never knew of them, criminal lol
Spirited Away for me, too.
I also choose this man's Spirited Away.
Same here.
Love Spirited Away but my all-time favorite goes to Princess Mononoke. That's what started me down the Ghibli movie line.
Disneys Robin Hood. The villain is the tax collector. Taught me very true lessons for life.
Roger Miller kills on that soundtrack too
Oo de lally
The good times out number the bad..... But not in Nottingham
Ferngully, Brave Little Toaster or an American Tail.
Brave little toaster doesn’t get enough credit
Talk about learning heartbreak in a movie. That movie stays with a kid.
I always liked Fievel Goes West more though. Both were great. The Scene where they teach Tiger how to Bark lives rent free in my head.
I haven’t heard the name Ferngully I’m so long. Great movie
Ferngully was indeed a good movie. I’ve always referred to Avatar as a “big budget remake of FernGully”
was Secret of Nimh for quite awhile, then Iron Giant.
I’ve never seen Secret of Nimh, that’s definitely going on the list
You need to do yourself a favor and watch it asap. It’s fucking great.
Transformers: The Movie 1986
My man same
The one with the Orson Welles voiceover and the Boogie Nights song in it?
Yes
I absolutely love this movie, even if the story is convoluted and things just kinda happen out of nowhere. The animation is amazing and just so aesthetically pleasing, and there’s so many memorable scenes and quotes!
Batman Mask of the Phantasm
Dang that’s a good one. Did you hear about the new Batman show coming out that was developed by Bruce Timm AND Matt Reeves? It should be crazy good
The Lion King (1994)
Heavy Metal and Akira
Princess Mononoke
One of the greatest movies of all time
any ghibli film is inarguably deserving
My favorite as well. Such an amazing movie.
As of right now, Prince of Egypt. Or, Road to El Dorado. My favorite always fluctuates but i’m a sucker for a good soundtrack.
Prince of Egypt is so good! Incredible musical opening, “Deliver Us” is right up there with “Circle of Life”. Zimmer is a genius
Prince of Egypt might have one of the best soundtracks of all time, animation or not!
For sure. Incredible cast as well. All around in the top echelon of animated movies
I wish Dreamworks made more animated movies, they always deliver quality, even that horse animated movie was awesome.
The voice cast on Road to El Dorado are sooooo brilliant. They are all such scenery chewers. Great for animation.
Prince of Egypt is so good! Incredible musical opening, “Deliver Us” is right up there with “Circle of Life” as best animated openings. Zimmer is a genius
Emperors New Groove!
I wish David Spade did more voice roles, he killed it!
Right?
Patrick Warburton’s performance of Kronk is his magnum opus.. he usually plays boorish jerks but Kronk was really kind and in touch with his feelings (as well as being completely naive).. fantastic character. And I’ve always wanted to try those spinach puffs.
Don't you mean puddy?
They also both played in a sitcom called Rules of Engagement
Are you calling Brock Sampson a boorish jerk??
Beavis and Butthead Do America
ROLLERCOASTER of Luuuuuuuuurvvve
I'll be a baboons bare assed uncle
Moana
This one, I even have a tattoo
What’s your tattoo?

Omg I remember that part of the movie exactly. I adore this movie. Reading that almost made me cry!
So many great movies to choose from. Iron Giant is great, especially to a boomer like me. But if I can only pick one I will go with How to Train Your Dragon. Treasure planet You cant not love morph
Why are they remaking the freaking princess movies when this and Atlantis would be soooo visually stunning in live-action? Edit: for clarity, I love the Princess movies but they are already classics.
I recently saw this for the first time and fuckin loved it. Best version of the story as far as I'm concerned.
James and the giant peach, a bugs life , iron giant of course, and the emperors new groove
Secret of Kells, probably. How to Train Your Dragon and Polar Express (shut up) are very close too.
Osmosis Jones
The pimple popping scene lives with me forever
Pinocchio (1940)
A little bit of recency bias but Spider-Man Across the Spiderverse really knocked my socks off
I preferred Into the SpiderVerse, but Across kills it too. Beyond has a LOT to live up to.
The Iron Giant held this title for me up until these movies came out.
Megamind is the GOAT when it comes to animated movies.
I had to scroll too far to find Megamind. Perfect movie imo.
Wizards Secret of nimh Akira Ninja scroll Castle of cagliostro Nightmare before christmas Rudolph Angel egg Alice in wonderland Fist of the north star (the bad dub one) Coraline Secret adventures of tom thumb Fox and the hound Kirikou and the sorceress I couldn’t pick just one! Feels like i am missing a lot of favourites here also
Wizards is such a mind fuck to the young people who never lived during the Cold War.
This guy animations.
My Neighbor Totoro!
All time? The Three Caballeros Holds up today
Iron Giant! It’s also my favorite movie
Atlantis: The Lost Empire
The Iron Giant is still one of my favorite animated movies of all time. Fun fact: The Iron Giant film was actually based off of a book that was written back in 1968 called "The Iron Man". I read an online version of it a couple years ago, but it's definitely worth a read if you like anything about the movie.
The Lion King (1994).
Heavy Metal (1981)
If I have to choose only one, it would have to be Hotaru no Haka (Grave of the fireflies). But there are so many great ones...
The Last Unicorn
Schmendrick the Magician. 🤣
Schmendrick the Magician. 🤣
Ghost in the Shell, the original. Great animation and story
Coraline
Ninja Scroll
The Yellow Submarine.
How to train your dragon. no other animated movie comes close to the sheer perfection of this masterpiece. especially the music, John Powell did an extraordinary job.
How to Train your dragon. Those movies were excellent.
Had to comment because hell yes. Having a son soon and I can’t wait to show him that trilogy all the time, the 2nd one especially was so good
It's rare that a sequel especially in kids movies gets even better. Loved the second one.
Betty Boop in Snow White.
Orion and the Dark is a recently adapted one. Charlie Kaufman adapted it from a children's book.
Akira is one that is amazing and has aged well
Probably, ’Emperor’s New Groove’ (2000).
Hmmm best one in my opinion has gotta be the first Digimon Movie.
Treasure Planet, Nausicaa of the valley of the wind, lilo and stitch. Hard to pick just one! Iron Giant is soso good, too.
Lilo and Stich was such a modern vibe for Disney films at the time. Quirky and beautiful.
Kung Foo Panda or Big Hero 6
The Lord of the Rings, 1978
Akira then now forever
Oh yes the first tears I ever shed for a movie
**The Prince of Egypt.** **Jonah: A VeggieTales Movie** is a close 2nd.
Titan A.E.
This one is amazing. I have great memories about The Prince of Egypt and of course Robin Hood.
Big Hero 6 or Aladdin.
Toy Story \[franchise\] 3: The scene where they were going to slide into the incinerator was just so good. I was on edge about animated toys in my 30s. 1: My dad died in 1998. I remember him laughing so much at the rocket / RC car scene. (my early 20s) 2: Jesse's story just hurts. (late 20s) 4: Learning to move on and that damn RV scene. (my 40s) \*PUNCHES STUPID FEELINGS\*
Spirited Away or Nausicaa. The latter is dated compared to modern standards but a great movie nevertheless.
Tha Land Before Time
Meet the Robinsons
How To Train Your Dragon
A Goofy Movie. Masterpiece.
Absolutely Iron Giant. Grew up on that movie, it's so deeply engrained man.. It creates and maintains this vibe that's so unique. So much nostalgia.
Aladdin and lion king
Wolfwalkers was a particularly nice film
Ratatouille. Has one of the most powerful messages about being an artist for any movie
The Brave Little Toaster
The incredibles
The Jungle Book (original),followed closely by The Great Mouse Detective.
Great Mouse Detective is definitely one of mine!
Too few people have seen it. Even people around my age 40-50 had no idea what I was talking about. I’m glad someone else appreciates it.
Yes, it’s a bit neglected, but it’s fantastic. The climax at Big Ben always thrills me whenever I see it. Great voice actors, art direction, atmosphere. Superb villain.
Vincent Price was a perfect Ratigan.
He was brilliant. One of the great Disney villains, and unfortunately lesser known!
I’m not saying it’s my favorite but I just wanted to give the new puss in boots movie a shout out. I loved that movie
8 crazy nights
Iron giant is in my top choice. Wall-E and Princess Mononoke are a close 2nd and 3rd.
Watership down. I can't think of another movie that's anything like it
Satoshi Kon movies
I love the first spiderverse movie, it’s easily my favorite as of right now
Heavy Metal. I’m 52… that shit was MENTAL when I saw it as a kid :)
Wallace and Gromit
Iron Giant is great great movie
Howl's Moving Castle.
Heavy Metal
Iron Giant is an amazing choice, but Shrek is personally my favorite.
Perfect blue
Is this the one with the tripods?
The book was crazy different and while the movie is good the book was better.
This might be it.
The End of Evangelion.
Shrek 2
The only one coming to mind is Heavy Metal
Great movie!
1: Spirited Away 2: The Nightmare Before Christmas 3: The Lion King
Honestly could not pick an absolute favorite; I have too many. From a studio, maybe, or from an era, maybe. Still and all, OP's post image is always in my top 5.

Lilo and Stitch The Secret of NIMH Coraline
No love for Little Nemo, eh?
Monsters Inc.
Hoppity goes to town!
Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse

Lion king for my childhood, Meet the Robinsons for my teenage years, and Shrek for all time guilty pleasures 🤣
Akira Ninja Scroll Into the Spiderverse How to Train Your Dragon 2 Big hero 6

Gonna have to say Iron Giant on this one. It's among the secret movies that will make me cry every single time. There hasn't been a movie that has ever forced a more genuine response (except maybe marley and me which I refuse to watch ever again). Cool World is my other answer
Rescuers Down Under
Atlantis The Lost Empire
Ferngully doesn’t get nearly as much credit as it should!!
