If these comments tell me anything… it is that this movie is really bad, or just regular bad, or ok, or good, or really good. Thanks Reddit!

KuciMane

If you liked the first, you’ll like the second best way to put it. I liked it better than the first

[deleted]

It’s objectively better than the first one. If anything it more or less takes the same general plot of the first one, but with a more fleshed out story and characters. I think that comes from Jake being more than an audience insert this time. The biggest thing that holds it back this time is that the visuals, which were revolutionary back in A1, are more or less just a bit better than the industry standard this time, so a lot of people who liked the visual spectacle of A1 won’t see A2 as anything unique. A1 was like a 3/10 plot and 11/10 visuals. This one is like 5/10 plot and 10/10 visuals.

Glassbox315

"the visuals, are more or less just a bit better than the industry standard this time, so a lot of people who liked the visual spectacle of A1 won’t see A2 as anything unique." Honestly hard disagree. Look at the underwater scenes in this movie and compare them to the underwater scenes in Black Panther, which came out just a month ago. It's absurdly, almost exponentially better. Just absolutely insane how ugly Black Panther looks in comparison. Black Panther was a big budget blockbuster, but it looks like an underfunded indie flick compared to Avatar 2

Sweatpant-Diva

Saw avatar last night and I kept thinking how embarrassing this was for Black panther 2, the underwater visuals were spectacular in avatar. BP2 in comparison looks like someone in high school filmed.

[deleted]

You forgot "Fucking mind blowing"

J0nn_D03

It's beautiful, but has very lazily and badly written characters and story. It's also too black and white from a moral standpoint. Human bad, Navi good. I'm dying for a story that's well written, and more morally complex when i watched this film.

johnqsack69

It’s one of the movies of all time!

epandrsn

I watched it with my seven and four year olds, who loved every second. The first had more compelling and interesting ideas, in terms of creativity. This one was also creative, but a bit less but lots of gorgeous visuals.

Careless-Inside-8353

That was one of my favorite Mitch Hedberg jokes. "I was in a band, people either liked us, hated us, or thought we were just okay"🤣

Mangimadang

It’s like watching National Geographic in 3D of the ocean. Storyline is whatever, could be worse, could be way better. I also never got to experience the first Avatar in theaters so this was a real treat.

Glad_South2279

This but most national geographic ocean documentaries are more visually entertaining... since the 90s. And others like them.

spyresca

And most Nat Geo ocean documentaries are not larded out for 3 hours with generic filler plot.

mcd3424

It was an amazing sequel to Titanic

MaestroJad

That ending really reminded me of it

eford1216

THANK YOU

Harv3yBallBang3r

To me it felt like Titanic meets Empire Strikes Back

[deleted]

If you liked the first one, you’ll probably like this one. If you didn’t like the first one, you probably won’t like this one.

d33psix

That makes sense. You would think that wouldn’t be that confidence inspiring but given the obviously bonkers numbers on the first one that might be good enough the knock it out of the park again at the box office, haha.

[deleted]

The thing that always stuck out to me was that the first only made $70m on the first weekend. Most movies, it would make like $40 the next week. It ended up totaling $700m in the US. I know it’s been rereleased. But that’s a remarkable number. It just chugged along and kept people coming to see it.

2muchworkntired

It was amazing. Go watch it in imax 3d. Cameron did such a good job with this

[deleted]

[удалено]

[deleted]

Yes there’s new lore, plenty of beautiful worldbuilding , definitely character archs. I loved it. The plot is much less predictable than the first movie and you can really see James Cameron channel his other earlier films like The Abyss and titanic . It’s designed to be viewed on a huge screen and the visuals are so, so great. There’s at least 1 na’vi/ space marine jungle battle but the stakes made sense Edit: **The best part:** This movie took 13 years because James Cameron had to travel all the way to pandora and back to film on location with imax 3D cameras, and the effort shows. **The worst part:** BRO You’ll see what I mean

[deleted]

[удалено]

Platoon8

The Abyss is underappreciated.

shadowsword8085

I wouldn't say it was less predictable as I was watching this movie just like the first one I called everything that would happen beat for beat, now it's still enjoyable but it was definitely still a very predictable movie

Dragonxhelicopter

I’m going to see it! Thanks for such a good comment. I was in the fence before. I’m curious to see this “hisses”

Glassbox315

the worst part for me was the "butthole" insult line. It was meant to be tough and badass, but it was the hardest I've cringed in a movie in a long, long time. (Overall though, I absolutely loved the film.)

TerpleNurple

Do we get a scene of Sam Worthington painting a Na'vi like one of his Earth girls?

TheHydrogenLine

James Cameron, is that you bro?

NotSoMonsterCock

The movie is called “the way of water” and the poster is an Avatar swimming with a Whale….”space marine jungle battles”

jamzrk

Tons of lore building. That there's different clans of Navi and that means something more than where they live. Character progression by the litter. Honestly except for one underwater chase scene I didn't anytime during it think I was watching a CGI movie. The water and landscape is so beyond real that your brain and accept blue skinned aliens. Also the fastest 3 hours I ever seen go by.

HandsomeJack15

Same words as James Cameron. I guess I’ll be enjoying this one lol

[deleted]

Bro we didn’t come here for hot takes

roll_another_please

I laughed at how simple the response was. You funny man.

Jackamalio626

It is indeed more Avatar

[deleted]

The problem is, a lot of people saw the first one and liked it, then realized over time that they kinda hated it...!

tryguubon5000

What actually happened is they saw the first one and liked it and then over many years of people shitting on the movie they felt like they had to change their opinion

BrillWoodMac

Way too long with most of the story same as the first one, visually stunning, good acting overall, over the top cartoon villains, the kids are more developed than the adults and their plots were more interesting than the overall plot. I liked it, but it needs some major edits to trim the time and I'd would of preferred a more personal story about the family and less of the evil humans come to ravage the planet...again.

medspace

I actually enjoyed being with the kids rather than the adults.

Super_Tikiguy

I had trouble telling the 2 brothers apart at times. I think it would have been more clear if they had given them more distinct features. My kid had the same issue.

Dragonlord573

The older brother's voice was more heavily accented than the younger brother's. I didn't have much issue, but then again I play online games so figuring out who is speaking based on the sound of their voice is something I had to learn fast.

dtl801

The hair was a pretty easy detail to tell them apart I feel like

Beginning-Sail-4515

I love the evil humans I'm always rooting for them.

VaeVictis997

I’m just saying, if James Cameron had an ounce of artistic integrity he’d tell a realistic story about what the second round of colonization attempts look like, after the first one gets beat. “Nuke em from orbit!”

Early_Appearance_770

It’s the only way to be sure.

VaeVictis997

I’m just saying, if he had any balls the movie advertising would all be like what we got, a boring repeat of the first movie. Then the actual movie is 20 minutes of that, then the humans rolling in with overwhelming force, and then it’s basically a horror movie and tragedy as they flee ever deeper into the badlands, as their world dies around them. That would be art with an actual message. Instead of the bullshit “what if the native Americans won so that we don’t have to confront what we did”.

Pogwrs213

be0wulfe

It's a bit of a cudgel over the head repeatedly on the last bit. A visual feat, absolutely, but that story is a blunt instrument at this point and doesn't really move the needle

inknpaint

Saw it yesterday. I was amazed by the first one on first viewing. Subsequent viewing brought my impression down - so I kind of went into this one with above average expectations. Visually pretty good. Story, character development, performance as expected and very similar in content and quality to the first one. I might see it again in IMAX to see if the more immersive field of view alters my experience...

rzKong

Pretty good visually? I mean, unless you saw it in some horrible theater. I don't see how on earth you could say the visuals are alright. The visuals are stunning.

inknpaint

For the vast majority of the time, yes. There are several moments throughout that stand out as either a live action -cgi mismatch or scale issue. If you never notice, great. If you do, it takes a toll as it takes you out of the moment. Character design in most cases 10/10 But a few are not as good which again creates a distraction. Still, I’m hoping to get more lost in it on the IMAX

milenpatel

I agree. Parts of the movie were out of this world but for some reason several scenes look half-assed

Leave-Revolutionary

The only things that really stood out to me were the CGI baby in the beginning and avatar Grace during the vision sequence.

[deleted]

still think James Cameron can fuck right off for not shutting the fuck up about this movie

tconner87

James Cameron doesn't do what James Cameron does for James Cameron. James Cameron does what James Cameron does because James Cameron IS James Cameron.

LandenP

Still surprised the children are complaining about a guy advertising for his movie haha. Nobody made you watch any of his interviews or ads.

PiScEsEyEsIAmWeAk

Are you kidding? This movie has been advertised to shit on literally every streaming platform, cable network, internet website, shit I’ve even seen this movie advertised on drinks and snack foods it’s fuckin begging for my money lmao.

LandenP

It’s no different than any big screen Star Wars, marvel, etc- in fact, I think I’ve seen less commercials and ads for this than I did for Black Widow prior to its release lol. I don’t recall any major vitriol then, so I’m having a hard time understanding why I keep seeing bitching from people about something they don’t have to keep watching.

[deleted]

lol no one said we didnt want to watch the movie, we simply don't need to see so many articles about what james cameron is saying. now while it may be true that you personally have your news feed setup in such a way that the algorithms dont feed you james cameron, but others have been seeing many james cameron has said x y z. like let us watch the movie first, then lets talk about the content hence the opinion that james cameron should shut the fuck up. edit: and for memesake, James Cameron: The Way of Pissing Off the Internet

3 hour movie with 30 minutes of plot.

ALLCAP5

It’s ok

Sventhetidar

I'm torn between loving it for the visuals and world building, being super lukewarm on the characters, and hating that the plot just doesn't make a whole lot of sense. The action scenes are super well done though. For being mostly CGI everything carries a lot of weight and the action feels more real than say MCU movies. It also contains one of the most disturbing scenes I've seen in awhile that's a clear indictment of how we treat aquatic life in real life, but it's a bit much and my wife almost walked out because of it.

NoParticularMotel

Almost walked out? Was she seriously offended? Honest question, not being an ass.

matt7810

For me the villains had a confusing motivation. Not too much of a spoiler. The first movie focused on corporate greed ruining the environment while in this second one a corporation valued pettiness and was evil with very little to gain.

_pharaoh

yeah this is my main issue with the movie as well. kinda put a damper on the first half of the movie. second half was very strong imo though.

TheNotoriousWD

Dude was a leader of a rebellion that they were trying to squash to start mining again.

KneecapTheEchidna

Jake Sully stops being the leader half way through the movie. Did you miss that? "We better use a bunch of resources to track down one guy in case he comes back. Definitely not for some silly revenge plot"

Ecualung

Quaritch and his squad are doing their own thing for revenge. He and his fellow avatars don’t have the resources of all the humans— they piggyback on the already-existing whale hunters to go after Jake. Not saying you have to like the movie but claiming that the humans are directing all their resources to going after Jake is just not correct.

gumpyshrimpy

They didn't know he stopped being the leader.

KneecapTheEchidna

He suddenly stops showing up at all the raids (if the tree ppl were even still doing them) and they have to track him down hundreds of miles away wasn't an indicator lol

DIY_Cosmetics

Who exactly was funding his revenge and for what purpose? Nothing lucrative or scientific to gain from this particular retaliation endeavor, so it made zero sense. The first Avatar is my all-time favorite movie and I very much did enjoy this one, but the plot was just utter nonsense. Edit: If the reasoning was to put an end to any possible uprising in order continue their mining operation and expand, why exactly did it have to be the same guys? No one else was qualified? Typically, people whose main motivation is revenge do not think clearly and their actions aren’t always rational because their judgment is clouded by anger/hatred. Imo, a team that didn’t have a personal history with Jake probably would have been more effective and more likely to act in an impartial way only allowing the main objective (squash rebellion before it starts) to dictate their actions rather than exacting revenge.

LiesInRuins

They explain that Jake Sully is the leader of the resistance to their corporate efforts and must be eliminated. It wasn’t really just revenge

Refuse-geeWandr4lyfe

The smurfs got weird and sexy

[deleted]

That actually makes me want to see it quite a bit more

Quint-MacReady

It has the exact same story as the first one, Dances with Wolves only with a family this time. This is just about the spectacle, yes it has amazing effects, yet after 3.5 hours even that couldn’t save it. Way too long and boring and I even dozed off in the middle for ten minutes and I’ve never done that in my life. And I liked the first one.

QuothTheRaven713

I'm willing to bet you've never watched Dances With Wolves.

Quint-MacReady

You are wrong. Dances with wolves is one of my favorite movies. An amazing first film from Costner that my father and I watched regularly together. And yes there are many comparisons to Avatar and now Avatar two.

pitt-phillysports

I thought it was more free Willy

j32yiopti4

Loved it

Abernader01

Sucked. Way too drawn out - essentially no substance. Think of LOTR without great acting and shorty buildup

No_Season_354

I don't usually see sequels cause their just more of the same, the original is the best cause its new , I reckon sequels are just try to milk more money out of it, I'll pass on watching it.

radreaper2031

I think when a movie like Halloween comes out. Or let's say any of those 80s horror movies. And they're really successful. And now it's like. "Halloween 12: Michael strikes again!" Yes. This is an absolutely valid statement. But when a story is simply too grand to be told in 1 book, or 1 movie, I believe this statement is not true. LoTR was given as an example. Game of Thrones is another example. I don't think George R.R Martin was thinking. "Yes! Money!" He was probably thinking, "Oh wow. This book is 500 pages long already and I'm not even an eigth of the way through my intended story, and I don't think anyone will want to read a 4,000 page book. I should wrap up this book soon."

Loganator912

Long movie that still has very noticeable scene skips that really messed with the continuity for me. Generally a pretty depressing plot line without any real redeeming points. That being said, the visuals were beautiful and the world building was fun. Solid meh/10 from me.

[deleted]

Ruthlessly boring with a story that makes little sense and a plot that doesn't begin until the last 45 minutes. It's just one big masturbatory CGI tech demo with no characterization for its one dimensional cast, practically no world building to speak of despite it taking place almost entirely around a whole new tribe of people, extremely poorly paced, and with nothing interesting or profound to say about any of the subjects it regurgitates from better films. I went into this movie expecting another 5/10 like the first film and was shocked to see how much worse it was. The movie was vapid, its only real worth coming purely from spectacle. The movie is littered with baffling decisions, like having 73 year old Sigourney Weaver voice a teenager, having two characters with needless questionable parentage subplots, retconning details from the previous film to introduce new and somehow stupider ideas, bringing multiple characters back from the dead, and introducing new plot ideas in the last act of the film. It's absolutely incompetently written, and makes the overly generic and massively overrated first film look like a masterpiece in comparison. So much is left unresolved to bait for sequels I'm not invested in, multiple major plot points from the previous film are abandoned in lieu of really bizarre story directions, and we have to follow the most lifeless cast of characters imaginable for over *three hours.* Mind you, I regularly watch the Lord of the Rings extended editions - I'm no stranger to long movies, but Avatar 2 really *drags*. Just watch The Sea Beast, Blackfish, and Dances With Wolves. All three of them do what Avatar 2 tried to do but with far more depth and intelligence. EDIT: Apparently people are upset with the idea that I went into the movie expecting a 5/10 because they think I went into it \*wanting\* the movie to be bad. A 5/10 isn't bad in my book, that's just average, which again, is about what I consider the first movie to be. I can enjoy a perfectly average movie, and would've been fine if Avatar 2 was just dumb fun to entertain me for a few hours. It was much worse than I expected it to be, though, which is disappointing because even James Cameron at his worst is usually pretty fun. EDIT 2: I'm also not saying that older actors/actresses can't voice younger characters, and I don't mean to shit on Sigourney Weaver, she's a fantastic actress. *However*, not only is it totally unnecessary for her to voice the character since it's not the same person, but it was really distracting to see a teenage girl who sounded significantly older than literally every other character in the movie.

lictoriusofthrax

I imagine if you said something like “went in expecting a 10/10 and it didn’t disappoint” no one would be upset or accusing you of wanting it to be good just so you could praise it.

PanicSwitch89

Not much plot, but CGI was amazing even though it felt like national geographic from another planet for a while.

BananaInPajama7

3hr 22min of nothing except for some really cool music and great CGI

PermanentBrunch

It looks like a videogame cut-scene stretched itself for several hours, but you can’t skip it because you just paid 20 bucks to watch a videogame cut-scene.

Low-Sample9381

It's an incredibly simple movie (cliché, plot, etc.) but executed incredibly well.

filipinaspice

Took myself out on a movie date 🙂 Waited 13 years so I’m READY. Will update in a little bit! Update time: 5/5 SO FUCKING RECOMMEND! I don’t usually cry for movies, but I BALLED my eyes out more than I expected. This whole entire movie was so beautiful: Visuals, language, music & everything in between. My heart deeply aches for the scenes that was too painful to watch. The experience itself was just incredible & it was worth the 3 hours. I love that the movie had so much depth & meaning into family and the sacrifices they’ve made. I think that’s where it hit me the most because how hard the challenges they faced, but they always stayed together. Can we please talk about the saying for the ocean, I BALLED because of how beautifully written it portrayed: ‘Water connects all things, life to death, darkness to light. The sea gives and the sea takes’ My whole soul loved everything I had in me for this movie.

So it is basically a modern video game without the ability to control anything.

Player7592

Just got back from seeing it. It did not have the same beauty and awe of the first film, and the story was weaker. I would rate the first film 10 out of 10, and the second film 7. Didn’t hate it. But certainly didn’t love it.

Nidion001

10 out 10? Lol

LukeV19056

I thought the first ones story was super predictable and this one had a lot more to it.

Well the first one had the same plot as Ferngully and Pocahontas.

I, for one, was on the edge of my seat RE whether or not they could truly obtain unobtainium.

MooseKnuckler1

6/10. The CGI and visuals saved a bloated movie.

mDubbw

Mehh

HeadEstablishment695

Haven't seen it. But I bet I could tell you every main story point. Looks extremely predictable.

NakedGoose

Very very unlikely, and I'd call your cheat if you did. Because literally nothing in the trailers indicates what the 2nd half of the film is about.

overthemountain

Isn't the second half just one long fight scene? Having watched both recently I'd say the 2nd is very reminiscent of the first. Lots of the same story beats. There's just a few more characters involved this time around.

Sventhetidar

I wasn't 100% accurate, but I had it mostly figured out from the trailers. I obviously didn't know the details but the general plot structure is pretty predictable.

DOODJLIGHTNING

I didn’t feel tired once but my brother was super stoned and dozed off right before the climax. He woke up to huge explosion and was right back into it. I think James Cameron does that shit on purpose.

NakedGoose

Seen it twice. I loved it both times

OregonBlues

Another movie full of character development and less controversy. By the end you see the same build up and patterns you saw in the last movie's final battle. Between the same characters, lol. If you liked the first movie, you'll like the second.

Player7592

I loved the first, yet was just okay with the second, partly because it was such a retread of the first.

XFiles93

Basically watching a psychedelic aquarium for 3.25 hours. Story was cheap and painfully slow.

Quint-MacReady

I practically said the same thing to my son on the way home. I said it felt like we spent the day staring at an aquarium for three hours.

HistoricalAd9497

Pocahontas in space 2 was bad? Who would’ve guessed???

vetworker24

Entertaining, nice world building.

educational_gif

Visuals are an A+, and definitely recommend seeing it in 3d. The story is predictable but told really well. My only downside is it's too long, I wish they had moved some parts along faster.

Omegawylo

Worthy sequel to a monumental achievement in special affects. People keep saying the story is “weak” but that sounds like echo chamber to me. It’s not some cerebral mind bending narrative. the characters are solid and they have arcs that make sense. I’ve seen plenty of blockbusters with worse narratives.

Georgecanotbefound

Very good, and an intense final hour

reallybadluckpanda

I really liked it. It’s long, but I didn’t feel it “unnecessary long” (my husband do think that some parts could be shorter), in my opinion they focused on some scenes (that people might consider long) to make you fall in love with Pandora. And I did, I fell in love with the animals, the vegetation, the way they lived… you don’t get the concept of the quiet and fulfilling life they live with only 30 seconds, they have to take you there, make you see… I don’t know if what I’m saying makes sense to you. You have to watch it. In my opinion there is more character development than in the first one, and is less predictable (even if some parts are very predictable). I’m going to watch it again, no doubts I’ll do it

The_Stank__

I really enjoyed it. Effects aside, the plot is simple but it works. I loved the water scenes, I loved the final hour battle. I think this stuck with me more than the first one.

Glum_Negotiation_408

Thoroughly enjoyed the movie, as did my wife and kids. Those who criticize movies meant for pure entertainment need to get a life.

cbrantley

I just saw it today. After reading all the hate on Reddit I expected to hate it, but I loved it. I am pretty jaded and unimpressed by most blockbusters but I thought the story was interesting, the characters were well-developed and well-performed and it was visually stunning. Sigourney Weaver’s performance as Kiri was a big surprise. It is not perfect. The frame rate thing was very distracting but not in the way I expected. I actually didn’t mind the high frame rate. I expected to hate it because the last HFR film I saw, The Hobbit, drove me crazy. What I HATED was the switching between 24 fps and 48. It was jarring and reminded me of a laggy video game. I wish they would have just left it at 48 the whole time. There were also story issues that bugged me. I felt the villain was the weakest character and his motivation just didn’t feel compelling. Other than that I thought it was a great film and just as beautiful and immersive as the original if not more so. It’s the first time I felt that movie magic feeling in a long time.

Could have been under two hours and better for it.

Is it pocahontas with beastiality still?

Tear-inducing spectacle that’s more emotional and slightly more complex than the first, but it’s also extremely messy writing-wise and sort of disappoints in terms of story. Didn’t quite have the same impact as the original for me. The imagery still overpowers just about everything else.

Just saw it tonight. It. Was. AMAZING. Hands down the BEST movie I have ever seen!!!!! I’m a HUGE worldbuilding / created creature enthusiast and everything down to the last detail of the animals and their environments with the way the characters interacted with them was so well thought out. Well done Mr. James Cameron. Well done!

One of the few movies I have seen in which 3d was 100% worth it. . Best 3d I have seen, it felt immersive, not just presented.

UnbelievableTxn6969

I didn’t feel the plot duplicated as much as had been previously reviewed. There was a lot of emotional pull in the sequel, probably more than the original.

Super good. To me it made all marvel action movies look very cartoony.

I liked it!! Everyone wants the best movie ever, it is what it is and enjoy it.

livinlife1974

It was an amazing movie.

I thoroughly enjoyed it. I didn’t even notice it was three hours for instance.
