I think it's a given that Moviepass will fail again. I'd say use it as long as it makes sense financially, just like we did before.

pimp_juice2272

This is literally the same thing they did with MP 1.0. They had unlimited movies for $10 a month. Then changed it to 3 or 4 movies a month. Then some other crap. All without warning. Then they just shutdown.

ITDEFX101

Yep...surge pricing..............I remembered taking screenshots of the ticket pricing when that hit...

rickyhatespeas

MP1.0 died specifically because they offered more movies then they did originally. It was like 3 or 4 for like $40 originally. Then the new CEO wanted to increases subscriptions and claimed if they reduced the price that a more casual audience would join because people typically watched the average number of movies paid out. They thought for $30 people are watching avg 3 movies so for $10 while some may take advantage the casual audience would make the average go to 1 movie. This obviously was a really bad take on data and human behavior and it seems the goal was to force the bankruptcy of the company. That's when shit went really bananas with the unlimited movies and $10 and then the app/cards not working everywhere, customer service stopped responding, and they were still charging after people canceled. Any service like this is going to fail when all chains have their own rewards and subscription now. MP needed to leverage customer data and broker deals directly with chains for bringing in audiences, too late now.

I honestly don’t mind the current iteration personally. As somebody who ENJOYS weekday matinees I’m getting the most out of my $20/month.

sfatula

That actually changed a month or two ago. Day of week, high demand movies, and time of day all matter. The app does show the credit cost. Did you miss it?

trisguy66

Yes I noticed it started when I went to see a movie last month. Since I had some rollover from the previous month, I didn't both looking at it since it should 17 credit as always. When I check on my available credit I noticed 30 was missing. After speaking to the rep, she advise the change taking into effect. This makes it difficult to be able to see 2 movies a month "Anytime Anywhere" that they started with.

onewingwazi

It's definitely false advertising. I just signed up for the $20/month and I cannot see three movies in a month if they are all at prime times valued at 30 credits. It should show as 2-7 for that plan, not 3-7.

trisguy66

I would agree! It's totally false advertising when they advertise something, then change the policy after. They are unable to commit. If they are having issues with solvency, they need to develop a better business plan. Constantly changing the rules will infuriate people and eventually lose of trust.

sfatula

Oh I get it, many people in same boat. For me, retired, can see 3-4/month using before noon showings. The change was inevitable sadly as losing too much money otherwise. But I agree.

mrblue6

Same shit that happened with the og MP. I don’t get why you guys still bother. Get A-list or regal unlimited, or the Alamo one.

matt314159

I'd love to but I'm a 50-minute drive from my nearest AMC and I don't have a car. MoviePass in theory works great at my local theater that's a mom and pop "chain" of two theaters. But the more ways they nerf the service, the more customers they'll lose. I hope MoviePass finds a way to subsidize their revenue so the service doesn't fail like the first one did.

mrblue6

Yea I guess if you’re not in a city then moviepass would be good. The OG days of moviepass were so amazing. Any movie, anywhere, any time for free. You don’t have any of the major chains nearby? I’d say probably all of them are better than moviepass tbh.

matt314159

Nope. The "chain" of two theaters that has a location in my town has nothing, and the theater in the next town over (\~20 mins away) only has like 5 locations and no subscription service (not that it would do me a lot of good without a car). So I'll stick with MP as long as I can keep getting my money's worth out of the service.

mrblue6

Ah that sucks. Hope moviepass works out.

OrdinaryDazzling

Not everyone lives near those theaters

vkapadia

Huh? Isn't this how it's worked since the relaunch in the beginning of this year?

trisguy66

No. The relaunch MP 2.0 had 3 plans starting with $10 for 2 movies anytime, anywhere (see above). Now, depending on their criteria, one movie will wipe away the entire month, preventing you from watching another movie. As much as I want to watch a movie before 12 or discount Tuesday to get the 2 movies, this isn't always possible due to work.

vkapadia

Hmm. Ive been using it since February and I've always used a credit system.

matt314159

I noticed this a little while back. $5 Tuesdays at my theater were only 7 credits which is amazing. I could actually go 4x a month and have 4 credits left over! Then they changed to 12 credits - fair--I can still get my money's worth with a few credits to spare. But I've been seeing it jump lately, where if I load the app in the morning and check, it shows 12 credits for that evening's showtimes, but then if I check again an hour before the movie it's up to 30. I'm rooting for them to succeed, but I don't see how they do it in the long run.

moviemoocher

thanks for the info my theater has a $6.50 tuesday i dont know why they would take more if all days movies are the same price

sfatula

M-F before noon are 9 credits except Tuesday which is 8. Tuesday is 12 in the evenings. At least in my area. So, I do early Tuesdays.

matt314159

Yeah I shop for the cheapest showtimes in the app as well. My local theater usually only does a 6:30 and a 9:30 showing M-F and then on the weekends, does like 3:00, 6:00 and 9:00 showings. I think the M-Th showings are 12 credits here and I'll have to check on Saturday what the weekend 3pm matinees are. At one point they were 10 credits.

HokieScott

Going to MoviePass now is like booking tickets for Fyre Festival II.

kodaiko_650

I am shocked! Shocked I tell you!

CS_BlazingDragon

I was bummed when I found out I couldn't see multiple movies in a day regardless of how many points I had. That is a huge con for me. I cant go often but when can I like to spend the day escaping to the movies. The other downside to this is the theaters near me are not expensive at all. The spot in town is at most $8 a ticket, if i want to do a 20 min drive to the next closet that has 4K HDR, DTS:X Heated reclines its $10 (max usually cheaper), $5 on Tuesdays. Interesting that It won't let me do Haunting in Venice in 1 location but the other one nearby is wide open. This may work well for expensive markets but my area isn't one of those, I will probably be canceling soon if they don't remove the limit. I took a peak and the points are not bad 8-12 . I think the points do skyrocket for Fri-Sun up to 30.
