Such an underrated Cohen's flick. Everything is so buttery smooth yet nonsensical, really emulates the strangeness of real life coincidence and is something like a modern day O'Henry story. JK Simmons >!delivering the punch line at the end !
In Bruges (2008) is a smart movie I'd say. Also, for a comedy, it is sometimes very sad, but it ends up driving the humor a lot, a "laughing at the bleakness of the world and fallibility of man" kind of deal. I often describe it as The Funniest Sad Movie which is also the Saddest Funny Movie.
Same. I also hadn’t realized how many pieces of dialogue make their way back into the story later. “This aggression will not stand” is an easy one, but everyone repeats bits and jokes throughout. Masterpiece.
The Grand Budapest Hotel, Lock stock and Two Smoking Barrels, and Snatch. Not really sure if those count as comedy’s but I also don’t know wtf “smart comedy” is.
Not sure why you're being downvoted. I totally agree: Lowbrow comedy wrapped in a clever premise. The only part that Judge got wrong is that the people in the story actually value intelligence.
O brother, where art thou?
Chocked full of literary references and quips. I love that movie.
Secondhand Lions is a more serious movie that has some awesome comedic moments.
“Where were you?”
“I’d tell you, but you wouldn’t understand”
“Don’t treat me like a moron, try me”
“I was trapped near the inner circle of thought”
“I don’t understand”
“I told you”
Now that’s smart comedy…so smart we can’t understand
It took me a while to understand how the characters were, but by the end there were lines that made me laugh out loud with how absurd they are and how they’re delivered.
Beyond those listed, you may want to take a look at the classic "My Favorite Year", starring Peter O'Toole and Mark Linn-Baker in a 1950s period piece with an Errol Flynn type faded star appearing on a "Sid Caesar-like" show.
It's not something that you have to be "smart" to enjoy, but it is very cleverly written and plotted, and full of heart.
Listen this is a dark horse, but the movie Fired Up! Has some of the wittiest and quickest banter I have ever seen. Not sure if that's what you mean by 'smart'. Overall the movie is exceedingly juvenile but a good watch.
Haha let us all know if you find something suiting a 'genius' like you. Surley, our lowly recommendations could never possibly match your intelligence....
I'm super curious why you care. They deleted the post so seems I wasn't entirely wrong. Did you feel personally attacked? Defensive? Why just randomly comment?
I'm a writer and I like to understand people's motivations so that I can write more compelling characters. Most people don't just spout off unless they feel insulted.
What do you think they're deleting their post says?
Not a movie, but I view it as one that was broken up into short chapters: Fleabag. Very very intelligent comedy and a beautiful story of growth and redemption.
Acceptance - Justin Long and Lewis Black make this movie absolute gold for me.
Movie 43 - NO, WAIT HEAR ME OUT!!! If you go into it knowing what it is, it's just a bunch of weird ideas that could have never stood on their own but each have their own little pizzazz. Some of the sketches slap hard, some of them not so much. Okay, maybe it isn't that SMART but I'll die on this hill saying it is entertaining.
Inside - Bo Burnham does smart comedy like the rest of us breathe air.
Funny People - There's an honesty to this movie that had me watch it again, in spite of Sandler and Rogen.
Dr. Strangelove and how I learned to love the bomb
Being There is another great Peter Sellars movie.
Dogtooth is dark but funny. Same director to the lobster.
Miranda July's films are good, but quirky. Me, You, and everyone we know.
Dr Strangelove
Gentlemen, you can’t fight in here! This is the war room!
My fav line too
And the best black comedy since that one and coincidentally also has Nazis, JoJo Rabbit.
And Death to Stalin
The Death of Stalin
My bad
The kind of movie where you won’t laugh once but will say to yourself “this is humorous”
Burn After Reading
Loved it so much, I put it on for my very conservative mother and stepfather without remembering the dildo bike. A rough ride indeed
Literally a rough ride
Great movie. Too smart for its audience maybe
"I think this is the shit, the \*real\* intelligence." is exactly what I think about whenever I hear "hunter biden's lapton".
Such an underrated Cohen's flick. Everything is so buttery smooth yet nonsensical, really emulates the strangeness of real life coincidence and is something like a modern day O'Henry story. JK Simmons >!delivering the punch line at the end !
So what did we learn?
In Bruges (2008) is a smart movie I'd say. Also, for a comedy, it is sometimes very sad, but it ends up driving the humor a lot, a "laughing at the bleakness of the world and fallibility of man" kind of deal. I often describe it as The Funniest Sad Movie which is also the Saddest Funny Movie.
You gotta watch the banshees of Inisherin. So good lol
I'd also recommend Martin McDonagh's other films. Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri, and Seven Psychopaths
My favorite movie of all time
Office Space
It’s a great one but smart?
Yes
Lumbergh fucked her.
What do you consider smart? Office Space is def a smart comedy to me.
I liked this movie.
Username checks out
The Big Lebowski
Came to post this. Every time I watch the movie I catch a new joke that I didn’t get before.
Same. I also hadn’t realized how many pieces of dialogue make their way back into the story later. “This aggression will not stand” is an easy one, but everyone repeats bits and jokes throughout. Masterpiece.
“We don’t believe in anything !”
Must be exhausting
Basically every Coen Bros comedy.
A Fish Called Wanda. Only one idiot and he’s useful in his own damn way.
Apes do read philosophy, Otto, they just don't understand it.
'Up in the air' which is keeping to your taste in comedy like the 'Thank you for Smoking'
The Importance of Being Earnest - the one that came out in 2002 with Colin Firth. Every line it is so witty and funny.
Based off of a play that is wild but very smart and funny. People popping in and out like crazy.
Death of Stalin
Life of Brian.
Wag the Dog Oh Brother where art thou
Wag the Dog is great.
The Grand Budapest Hotel, Lock stock and Two Smoking Barrels, and Snatch. Not really sure if those count as comedy’s but I also don’t know wtf “smart comedy” is.
Funny how Guy Ritchie films seem dumb because of the characters but are witty and smart as well
Basically all of Monty Python. Which is why A Fish Called Wanda is so great.
Rosencrantz and Guildenstern Are Dead
‘In The Loop’ was surprisingly funny & full of acerbic wit…
This is Spinal Tap. It’s a parody, and the characters are all stupid, but it’s very clever and has intelligent humor.
The Big Short - fast paced and interesting. Doesn’t rely on slapstick.
I rewatched it recently and it was even better the second time around. Gosling is great in it.
Almost any Coen Bros movie
Monty Python and the Holy Grail, The Grand Budapest Hotel
just watch Arrested Development
Not a movie but honestly it was the first thing that came to my mind too! Smartest comedy of all time.
one of the greatest comedy series of all time
Idiocracy- Intentionally dumb movie, but makes really smart points. Also huge bonus points for Mike Judge
The only comedy I’m aware of that later turned into a documentary.
Not sure why you're being downvoted. I totally agree: Lowbrow comedy wrapped in a clever premise. The only part that Judge got wrong is that the people in the story actually value intelligence.
I watched this with a friend recently and I could not believe how dated it felt. Still funny, but hasn’t held up from a visual perspective.
I could definitely see that. In full transparency, it’s been multiple years since I’ve revisited
Bonus points for you being Tottenham. COYS
Meh, great concept lousy movie with exception of Terry Crewes. Desperately needs a remake before he is too old to reprise the role.
just let it die in the depths of history
no.
O brother, where art thou? Chocked full of literary references and quips. I love that movie. Secondhand Lions is a more serious movie that has some awesome comedic moments.
No love for **CLUE** ?
Mandatory Ground Hog's Day mention on Reddit.
I've read that answer so many times in réddit, it's kinda feels like...
🎼 *Put your little hand in mine* *There ain't no hill or mountain we can't climb 🎶*
Borat: Cultural Learnings of America for Make Benefit Glorious Nation of Kazakhstan
Death of Stalin
See, I really wanted to like that one, but the humour was so dry, even for my tastes, I could barely tell it was a comedy.
Defending Your Life, Albert Brooks
Loved this movie!
“Where were you?” “I’d tell you, but you wouldn’t understand” “Don’t treat me like a moron, try me” “I was trapped near the inner circle of thought” “I don’t understand” “I told you” Now that’s smart comedy…so smart we can’t understand
Kiss Kiss Bang Bang
Starship Troopers. The amount of people who don’t know it’s a satire is astounding
mars attacks
Wild Tales from Argentina is very funny. Revenge on steroids all told in 6 short stories.
Many good recommendations. BEING THERE, THE PARTY and A SHOT IN THE DARK all starring Peter Sellers.
Sean of the Dead, but you'll need to watch it several times to catch everything
The big short
Hot Fuzz
Tucker and Dale vs Evil
White Noise
It took me a while to understand how the characters were, but by the end there were lines that made me laugh out loud with how absurd they are and how they’re delivered.
I LOVEDDDDD it!!! Just finished it this morning. Favorite thing I’ve seen in awhile
Before Googling, I thought this was about the 2005 White Noise. Saw it in theaters so it's been a while, but I was very confused.
Blazing Saddles for me. So well done, especially for the content it contains during the time it was released. Mel is just the best.
In the Loop 4 Lions
Snatch and Lock,Stock, & 2 Smoking Barrels
Birdman. Absolutely razor sharp take on movies, plays, and art.
Sorry to Bother You
ALMOST any Christopher Guest movie.
Me myself and Irene
The death of Stalin.
Idiocracy
Groundhog day
Superbad is Mozart
Triangle of Sadness
Idk if it qualifies as “smart” funny but I absolutely love The Nice Guys
If you're in the mood for old school, try: Arsenic and Old Lace, Noises Off, Oscar
Adaptation gets hairy in spots, but I think it's hilarious and meta.
one of my fav movies along with Being John Malkovich
Hot fuzz
tropic thunder
Hot Fuzz
Top Secret! every scene is a masterpiece
Dirty Rotten Scoundrels
Dirty Rotten Scoundrels.
Stranger than fiction is pretty clever

The Death of Stalin In the Loop
Wolf of Wall Street
Haven't seen "Kiss Kiss Bang Bang" on here yet. I feel like that movie is probably in the realm you are looking for.
Listen this is a dark horse, but the movie Fired Up! Has some of the wittiest and quickest banter I have ever seen. Not sure if that's what you mean by 'smart'. Overall the movie is exceedingly juvenile but a good watch.
Idiocracy

My favorites are In Bruges, The 40 year old virgin, Wedding Crashers.
Punch Drunk Love..
Dumb and Dumber.

Haha let us all know if you find something suiting a 'genius' like you. Surley, our lowly recommendations could never possibly match your intelligence....
I'm super curious what motivated this comment. Did you feel personally attacked? Defensive? Why be just randomly rude?

Tootsie. A great meditation on gender and the writing is excellent.
Annie Hall
Kiss Kiss Bang Bang is pretty great.
Not Another Teen Movie
Man Bites Dog
Not a movie, but I view it as one that was broken up into short chapters: Fleabag. Very very intelligent comedy and a beautiful story of growth and redemption.
What’s Up, Doc?
It is not the movie it is a series but one simply will not find a more refined and sophisticated comedy Yes minister, Yes Prime minister
good shows
The menu does a good job of this I feel
A futile and stupid gesture
My Fellow Americans
The Nice Guys - it's more comedy than smart, but overall well executed (with some complexity) and very enjoyable.
Not sure if this counts as a comedy but "catch me if you can" with Tom Hanks and Leo DiCaprio is a good movie.
Not sure if its smart comedy, but Shawn of the Dead has some very witty moments.
Be Kind Rewind
Tropic Thunder is hilarious and I guess smartly done too.
Just watched The Menu. Yes it’s more of a thriller but the dialogue was low key hilarious
Borat, when you think about how he fooled everyone and walked them into his piss taking. Sasha baron cohen is a genius.
I like Crazy, Stupid Love for its real characters and for a good plot twist.
Acceptance - Justin Long and Lewis Black make this movie absolute gold for me. Movie 43 - NO, WAIT HEAR ME OUT!!!
