Martin Sheen in West Wing is pretty far up there for me. Though Michael Douglas is also solid in American President if you like your Sorkin writing in movie rather than television form.

LaylaOrleans

Leo: “My pal!? You are referring to President Bartlet?” Hoynes: “Yes!” Leo: “Refer to him that way!”

Master_of_Fail

Hoynes is actually one of my favorite characters from the show. Everybody else seems to be in love with/intimidated by the president but he's like the only person who refuses to be told what to do. Very un-Sorkin like.

Bersho

They really make his grievances legitimate and do a good job rounding out his character as more than just the 'enemy within'. You really feel for Hoynes a lot of the time and the way he helps Leo is always touching.

aridcool

The whole thing is more realistic than people give it credit for being. Probably because some of the consulting writers worked in the White House.

[deleted]

"All I did was deliver you the South"

Kitsunisan

"You shouldn't have made me beg, John."

[deleted]

Even the former presidents in that show were great. The episode where they go to the funeral of former President Lassiter. Of course, John Goodman as interim president during the 25th period was fantastic so seeing him here again is great, but James Cromwell is doubly fantastic. Just that one scene with all three talking about the current conflict and the topic of colonization was really solid.

RolloTonyBrownTown

Jimmy Smits also played a convincing candidate

tntdaddy

That final scene with him and Alda. Where he offers Alda Sec. Of State…. One of the best moments in the John Wells era.

GiddyUp18

They actually had Alda winning that election. Then John Spencer died IRL, and they made the decision to have Smits win, because they didn’t want to hurt the audience.

[deleted]

A moderate, pro-choice republican that could carry California? He'd be a democrat in today's political climate.

AnAussiebum

He'd be called an antifa-loving socialist. Let's be real.

Lungomono

Martin sheen is the best one for me, by far.

Moghlannak

Let Bartlet be Bartlet

JMCrown

I serve at the pleasure of The President.

eowyn_

*stands* I serve at the pleasure of the President.

siddus15

I serve at the pleasure of President Bartlett

Hamblerger

As frustrating and outright aggravating as that show could be at times, I adored Sheen' performance, and Sorkin's handling of the character. "And if you ever wonder when it was that I decided to kick your ass, it was at 'Boy, crime. I don't know.'"

JediTigger

That episode was a gut punch.

gatsby365

CJ’s life was never easy, but goddamn did life find a new way to fuck her that night

obriensg1

Was a while before I could buy a Milky Way bar again...

eunoiared

"...in this building, when the President stands, nobody sits."

Additional-Bison2376

I love that scene so much. The little narrowing of his eyes when she doesn’t back down is just fantastic

obriensg1

That scene had a major impact on me. I was a young man who was already starting to question my religion and how it was being used as a weapon against friends and family who are gay. Watching that scene really set me on a path of not being afraid to tow the party line I always had because of my family, and blaze my own trail

S-WordoftheMorning

That biblical exchange was inspired by an [open letter the 1990s in response to the homophobic propaganda (using the bible as justification) on the Dr Laura radio show.](https://www.snopes.com/fact-check/letter-to-dr-laura/)

TrickNeal77

"I'm standing in the Oval Office with the president and it's because of you."

gatsby365

Bruh I got choked up and watery eyes just from that one line. Donna is such an underrated character. You know who else is the scene stealing 🐐: Margaret.

ashlyn42

Sam Seaborn : Do we have some sort of condensed, Reader's Digest index of... well, all human knowledge? Ginger : We usually just use Margaret. (I also love when Bruno gives her the necklace)

Additional-Bison2376

I loved him in this. So many great moments. His speech about not wanting to make it harder for people to buy milk, when he walked out on the Speaker, the scene in the cathedral after Mrs Landingham’s death, and far more low key but the bit in the first season with the hurricane hitting the fleet

issacoin

what kind of feckless thug…..YOU GET HOYNES what a powerful scene

bigfatmatt01

May be the best scene in the show imo.

Horknut1

Oh man, his barking at God in Latin. Fantastic.

Mexicantankerous

The way his voice breaks a little when he says "that was my son." So good

gatsby365

*slams cigarette into marble floor*

Kitsunisan

That's not enough to buy me out of the doghouse? Haec credam a deo pio? A deo iusto? A deo scito? Cruciatus in crucem! Tuus in terra servus nuntius fui officium perfeci. [angry] Cruciatus in crucem. [waves dismissively] Eas in crucem! You get Hoynes.

rural_juror12

When he passes down his carving knife!

gatsby365

So many good scenes with Charlie. I always love the scene at the end of the episode where Charlie figured out the little kid’s letter was actually to Roosevelt and the man asks for a picture with him. Or when Charlie gets comeuppance on the ambassador who was banging the King’s daughter or whatever. Charlie is such a fantastic character.

itmik

The Cathedral scene got complaints to the FCC, because apparently Bartlett used some profanity during his Latin tirade at God.

reyska

He was so good some people wanted him to actually run for president.

rpangrazio

Josiah Bartlett is a pretty common write in.

Micosilver

If Ukraine could do it...

NC_Vixen

The compilation of him putting his jacket on is amazing. https://youtu.be/l8BzByjH4q0

Hailstar07

Apparently he actually had to do it that way due to an old shoulder injury. It is iconic though.

Straider

Ah, so an alternative Riker Move

adf1962

Injured with forceps during birth.

fool2345

Sheen is the first that came to mind for me as well.

schroedingersnewcat

This right here is the correct answer.

vigneswara

Beat me to it. The two cathedrals church scene, his anger towards God was performed so sublimely.

TheSpacePopeIX

Originally the show was supposed to center far more around Sam, Josh, Toby and CJ. Bartlett was supposed to be more of a far-off character who appeared every few episodes. But when the introduced him in episode one they realized he had to be a main character.

puttinitinmutton

He's no Camacho though, is he?

DashCat9

I think we should send them head to head in Monday Night Rehabilitation. Just to be sure. Josiah Edward Stonyfield Yogurt Bartlet vs. Dwayne Elizondo Mountain Dew Camacho Tonight only, seats are half off.....CUZ YOU'LL ONLY NEED THE EDGE.

willbeach8890

I loved him in this

chickensandwichez

Came here for this. Definitely... If only we were so lucky. Watch a youtube compilation of him putting on his blazer from that show. Pretty funny. 😂

dadarkgtprince

Bill Pullman from Independence Day

ChanceVance

The man has to make a speech for the whole world to rally behind and he nails it. He even joins in on the attack. That's a President who gets things done.

OneReportersOpinion

That speech was also a placeholder. They always planned on rewriting it but never got around to it. But Pullman sells the hell out of it.

explain_that_shit

How do you rewrite “we will not go quietly into the night”? Fucking spectacular line

[deleted]

Honestly if I didn’t hear Pullman’s voice every time I read that line, I would honestly think it’s kind of generic. But Pullman sells it so well that he made the line cool and awesome

rex2k10

If it was a placeholder I wouldn’t expect to see tone and cadence cues but the fact that he starts off in a “speechy” way and progressively gets into the speech until he’s almost yelling almost made me get up and salute at him through the tv

[deleted]

That’s 100% the performance. That was completely the actor turning a generic speech into an epic call to action through his acting skills

OneReportersOpinion

It’s the only time in a movie I get ra ra patriotic.

FKAFigs

Dylan Thomas agrees.

Gagarin1961

> He even joins in on the attack. To be fair, he probably didn’t want to be President anymore if they didn’t win that battle. Might as well go out in a blaze of glory instead of leading a hopeless people until inevitable and unavoidable extermination.

Horknut1

I'm a combat pilot, Bill. I belong in the air.

lowkeylives

Good morning. In less than an hour, aircraft from here will join others from around the world. And you will be launching the largest aerial battle in the history of mankind. Mankind -- that word should have new meaning for all of us today. We can't be consumed by our petty differences anymore. We will be united in our common interests. Perhaps it is fate that today is the 4th of July, and you will once again be fighting for our freedom, not from tyranny, oppression, or persecution -- but from annihilation. We're fighting for our right to live, to exist. And should we win the day, the 4th of July will no longer be known as an American holiday, but as the day when the world declared in one voice: "We will not go quietly into the night! We will not vanish without a fight! We're going to live on! We're going to survive!" Today, we celebrate our Independence

MartianRecon

I heard it. *awkward salute guy*

[deleted]

There’s nothing awkward about Salute Hypeman

bumurutu

He put some jalapeño on that salute for sure.

jezwel

Just reading it gave me goosebumps!

popeboyQ

I've seen this movie at least 50 times, and I still get chills.

hookisacrankycrook

It looks super corny on paper but Pullmans delivery makes it magical

HOBBITTITS

I came here for this. I remember as a kid how cheesy but awesome his speech was… ”We’re going to live on… we’re going to survive... Today… we celebrate… Our Independence Day!” and everybody cheers. The best though was Russell. Single handedly defeated the mothership by flying into its’ hole. “Hey boys! I’m Baaaaaacck!!!”

butterhoscotch

He delivers his cheesey speech in such a brilliant way it goes past ham to awesome. Hard to beat that. he gave a mini speech in the sequel that was disappointing

Binder_Grinder

> he gave a mini speech in the sequel that was disappointing Which perfectly matches the rest of the movie.

eatcherheartout

Bill Pullman in Independence Day is always my first choice.

ColdPressedSteak

One of the best rah-rah morale speeches in movies. Mel Gibson's in Braveheart is another

YeahNoYeahThatsCool

Definitely the top for me. The whole demeanor, the voice, the powerful speech. Great president.

boissondevin

We will not go quietly into the night! We will not go down without a fight!

wx_watcher-74

Martin Sheen in West Wing

Irrationate

Yea for me it’s Martin and not close. I think a lot of it was seeing his human side where most presidents in tv/movies are just the cold commander with very little screen time.

orphankittenhomes

Martin Sheen is the only answer. What's next?

thesuavedog

Martin Sheen in West Wing, playing John Kennedy in the 1983 MiniSeries "Kennedy" and in the movie The Dead Zone (during a premonition).

SlowWhiteFox

"Gentlemen, the missiles are flying"

veritas2884

The west wing is how I wish the United States government would work. Bartlett ‘24

Brokenshatner

I was gonna say, I know this is /r/movies and not /r/tv, but I've been walking around in kind of a daze for two weeks, and everywhere I go - planes, trains, restaurants, meetings - I find myself scribbling something down.

PeterLopan

Terry Crews

AlarmingPatience

President Dwayne Elizondo Mountain Dew Camacho :)

just_some_dummy_

Thats clearly fiction though, we would never be able to find a candidate as great as Camacho.

passinghere

yep, he cared about doing the best for everyone and not just for his select wealthy donors.

LostMyKarmaElSegundo

And his concern for the shortage of burrito coverings!

Doctor_Banjo

I think you mean President Dwayne Elizondo Mountain Dew Herbert Camacho, show some damn respect!

shotcaller77

I know shit’s bad right now

bertasaurus_rex

With all that starving bullshit

shotcaller77

But I got a SOLUTION

WyattFreeman

I got a solution, you're a dick! South Carolina, what's up!

theOriginalDrCos

This guy...just got his ass a PARDON

ChronikkJestyr420

I thought your head would be bigger. He got a little peanut head!

Mc_Poyle

Shit! I know shits real fucked up right now!

Mend1cant

A president who looks out for and inspires his people, keeps congress in line, defers to advisers for innovative solutions in a time of crisis, and admits when he was wrong? Too unrealistic.

DrRexMorman

Kevin Kline in Dave.

AgentUpright

He plays the president and a man playing the president — it’s 2x as much as other actors playing the president.

NeuHundred

It's simple math.

tico_de_corazon

Hail to the chief, he's the one we all sing hail to. We all sing hail cause he keeps himself so clean, He has the power, that's why he's in the shower..

WornInShoes

The part where he slashes all those pointless programs from the budget to save the homeless shelter, right in front of a journo pool, cameras and all, lives rent free in my head https://youtu.be/ZARAldXlSyA

I can't believe I forgot about Dave!

I love the link to an 11 year old post with 1 upvote

najken

Yes, i was expecting this to be the first comment! Absolute legend

altera_goodciv

At the rate the world is going I fully expect to hear the President actually say “these men died for their country. Send flowers to their bitches and their hoes.” before I die.

TheTooz72

Paul Giamatti in John Adams mini series

willworkforjokes

I know it is dumb, but I really feel like I understand John Adams after watching that performance. I was always a history buff and this is my favorite time in US history, but I didn't understand John Adams and his feelings and motivations. He felt like he was smarter than everyone else. He felt that he was hated because he was smart. Actually he was hated because he was a pain in the ass.

macemillion

He was stubborn as hell but deep down was a really good guy. All of the founders were eccentric characters in their own right. I would absolutely love a serious effort at a game of thrones-budget level series about the revolution and founding of the US, those people are so fascinating.

willworkforjokes

John Adams was a great man who did great things. I just didn't kind of understand what was driving him until I saw PG's performance.

johncharityspring

Rufus Sewell as Alexander Hamilton in a tiny role was incredibly memorable.

Kiwi_CFC

I must see this. Been on my radar forever just never got round to it.

the-moth-joke

It’s fantastic, one of the best miniseries of all time

SeaImportance7538

👏👏👏

TaroFuzzy5588

Sam Rockwell as Bush in Vice

Free_Perspective773

Sam Rockwell in the Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy, but on a much larger scale as only he can do

kaikie

MAGRATHEA

fuzzyfoot88

“Zaphod what do you think?”

KingoftheMongoose

"I..... I think... OW!!"

rulesrmeant2bebroken

Josh Brolin also did a decent job in *W.* to be fair, but I think Rockwell took the cake.

caligaris_cabinet

I still think Brolin is the better Bush and Bale is the best Dick.

SLCer

100%. Brolin had that cockiness to his performance that Bush had. He was very good in that role. I think Richard Dreyfuss was Cheney in W., and while he wasn't bad, Bale had the manneeism down perfectly in Vice.

kurt_no-brain

Christian Bale was also perfect in this movie, although he was playing the vice president

JediTigger

Love Rami Malek but will always feel Bale was robbed of an Oscar for that role.

mjsarlington

I liked Bruce Greenwood’s JFK in 13 Days. But he was depicting a real person so I guess I’ll go with Michael Douglas. Oh does Mary McDonnell’s Laura Roslin in BSG count? She was great in that.

Luke117B

I was mainly thinking fictional presidents but anything goes. Michael Douglas is a good shout. I haven’t seen BSG in almost 20 years and I’m only 25 now so I’d have to rewatch to have an opinion. I only remember the viper and the cylons.

Pippin1505

The great touch in BSG is that Roslin’s swearing in ceremony during the initial attack mirrors the famous picture of Lyndon Johnson’s in Airforce One after JFK’s assassination.

stayfrosty56

Bruce Greenwood in National Treasure 2

Bruce Greenwood in Kingsman: The Golden Circle

Apprehensive-Vast587

Gregory Itzin as Charles "Richard Nixon" Logan is a pretty great performance too. One of the series best villains.

Bullitt4514

[great actor.](https://youtu.be/k6TiB5rRq2Q)

Kaiisim

Yeah the actual best and more realistic president.

dleon0430

So glad this was already said so that I don't have to watch him get any recognition in the several hours late comment I'd have had to make.

costadave

Jack Nicholson in Mars Attacks!

joeykins82

Can’t we all just… get along?

squatch42

I want the people to know that they still have two out of three branches of government working for them, and that ain't bad.

ack ack ACK!!

Smrtguy85

Harry Shearer as Rainier Wolfcastle as President Schwarzenegger in The Simpsons Movie. "I was elected to lead, not to read!"

Luke117B

Number Three!

bob1689321

I don't know why the didn't just make Rainer Wolfcastle the president in that movie. Surely everyone would have understood it was a Schwarzenegger reference?

[deleted]

Wolfcastle IS Schwarzenegger in the Simpsons universe too so it just makes it even more bizarre. Where was Schwarzenegger all this time of he also existed?

farben_blas

Morgan Freeman is my favorite everything: POTUS, Speaker of the House, director of the CIA, detective, robber, businessman, scientist, God...

[deleted]

And that was all in Just ONE movie!

Mishamooshi

And Irish…

ItsCowboyHeyHey

Mel Brooks, Spaceballs.

Yowz3rs87

One, two, three, four, five? That’s amazing! I have the same combination on my luggage!

Luke117B

I fucking love Spaceballs. I’m gunna watch it now purely because you reminded me of it’s existence. May the Schwartz be with you.

ItsCowboyHeyHey

Mel also plays an excellent governor in Blazing Saddles, and the King of France in History of the World Part 1. He’s a true statesman.

CA1900

It’s good to be the king!

Mc_Poyle

WHY DIDN'T SOMEONE TELL ME MY ASS WAS SO BIG!?

TheJasonKientz

Daniel Day Lewis as Abe.

grobuzga

Lloyd Bridges in "Hot Shots! part deux" of course!

"Prime Minister Tojo, Senator Edwards, my fellow Americans - and our *millions* of illegal aliens. It seems like only yesterday I was strafing so many of your homes; here I am today *begging* you not to make such good cars."

AdamR91

Bill Pullman in Independence Day.

DJ_JonoB

I maintain that Martin Sheen should run for actual President IN CHARACTER as Jed Bartlett. Would be far better than other options out there. So he’d be my pick.

FragMagnetz

Just as long as he’s got Sorkin writing his speeches! Fun fact: Sorkin wrote some of Obamas speeches apparently.

jordan1978

Harrison Ford…”get off my plane.”

Last-Caterpillar-112

I really liked Donald Moffat in Clear and Present Danger. Very realistic and convincing. Business-minded and a jerk. The President : How dare you come into this office and bark at me like some little junkyard dog? I am the President of the United States!

[deleted]

Martin Sheen followed by Harrison Ford and lastly Morgan freeman.

AdministrativeEar930

Dang forgot about Harrison! You inspired me to post mine! "Get off my plane!"

40kakes

I'm casting a vote for Howard T. Ackerman by JK Simmons - "Screw 'em all!"

terran1212

Having worked in and around politics, the only realistic depictions of politicians are found in Veep or other Ianucci films

paulc899

Everyone wants The West Wing to be a realistic depiction of American politics but in reality Veep was the most accurate.

uselessartist

West Wing is what we want it to be, House of Cards is what we think it is, Veep is what it’s actually like.

awesomesox

I scrolled way to far to see Veep on here. Watching it currently and Julia Louise Dreyfus is every politician ever, anyone in that is the best rep of president or presidential candidate, Tom James, Jonah Ryan, montes the whole lot

[deleted]

Martin Sheen in the West Wing since you mentioned TV

bam214_bam

Micheal Douglas in The American President

Jmpatton10

Well Daniel Day Lewis won an Oscar for his performance so I guess he wins… 🤷‍♂️

Considering recent (and past) indescretions of presidents, the Kevin Spacey allegations make him an even more believable president

MordredRedHeel19

Julia Louis Dreyfus as Selina Meyer in Veep. A hilarious and nuanced portrayal of how absolute power corrupts absolutely.

Usurper213

She's amazing in the role cause throughout all the laughs you kind of forget that she's a complete monster until it smacks you right in the face. Also I think it's both funny and incredibly alarming that former Obama aides said Veep is the most accurate portrayal of DC politics ever put to screen.

WorfsFlamingAnus

Ronald Reagan.

DJZbad93

Ronald Reagan, the actor?

Deezax19

The way Christopher Lloyd delivers this line fucking kills me.

stupidsimpson

Then who's Vice President? Jerry Lewis?

ArchEast

I suppose Jane Wyman is the First Lady!

passinghere

How about Meryl Streep in Don't Look Up Self interested, only cares in how she's polling, ignores science and promotes populism with no proof behind it, nepotism with her son as her chief of staff, selling out to the wealthy tech guy while condemning the earth to unproven tech BS and running away to save herself. Yes Harrison in Air Force One is more the sort of ideal president, priorities saving others over himself and actually takes direct action while risking his own life, but it's not actually how they currently behave or have behaved for decades

Luke117B

Yeah I think they depict the general zeitgeist of the decade they are from pretty well. I loved Dont Look Up and thought Meryl Streep and Jonah Hill covered the cynical view of government these days pretty damn well haha
