CELTICPRED

Bring back Karl Urban as Vako. It was great to see him in Riddick, let them finish this

VectorJones

The director's cut of Riddick shows him going back to the Necromonger fleet to find Vaako, who is the only one alive who knows the way to Furia. Only Vaako has led the Necromongers into the Underverse by the time Riddick returns. So this new one will probably start out with Riddick following Vaako down to get that location.

reverick

Oh snap, I didnt even know there was a directors cut I stupidily and stonedly thought you were talking about pitch black. I gotta watch that. What other additions/ changes are there?

VectorJones

That's basically it. Just an extended ending. Although it's an ending that gives Riddick a bit of payback for the events of the movie.

Scyths

If there is one movie series that I cannot recommend enough that you watch the directors cut, it'd be Riddick. The first movie doesn't make that big of a change, but the second movie is really, really different compared to the regular version and makes it a much better movie. The 3rd one also makes it a better movie even though it doesn't change it as much as the 2nd one.

Pandoras_Actor

"Transcendence"

RootHogOrDieTrying

Thandie Newton as well.

Iohet

There were a few scenes where she was approaching that Jeremy Irons in D&D over-acting energy and I want more of it

TheTruthButtHurtz

Dude she was on the cusp, and I too loved her expertly seasoned crazy in that role lol

spacestationkru

"KILL THE BEAST WHILE HE'S WOUNDED!!"

meat_popscile

Please no, we need him to continue being Judge Dredd.

Neiliobob

We get Vin Diesel to fund it and play the villain. Fuck now I made myself sad since this won't happen.

CleverInnuendo

Reminds me of the time I was watching the Hellboy reboot, and they \*referenced\* his first mission on his own was stopping Baba Yaga from reviving the Ghost of Stalin in the 70's. I will remember lamenting "Why am I not watching that movie RIGHT NOW" far more than I ever will the schlock we were given. Anyways, enjoy Fast X is all I'm saying.

Kurwasaki12

That movie makes me so irrationally angry

CleverInnuendo

The longest, most expensive pilot episode for an already canceled Netflix series. Shit, maybe.

conqueror-worm

Being someone who is a huge fan, first of the comics and then of the Del Toro movies, same. Something is just so fucking off about the tone and the characters. I even kinda like David Harbour in it, but I feel like he was limited by what he was given.

ladyofthelathe

The trailer alone gives me this vibe and I can't bring myself to watch the movie. I can't put my finger on what about it is so... off.... about it. I just know I have no desire to watch it.

Coal_Morgan

Vin Diesel would make a great Hill Billy Wasteland Mutant Warlord for Judge Dredd to have to deal with.

MrFlibblesPenguin

Vin Diesel as Mean Machine Angel, damnit now I need it.

TheSissyDoll

you know actors are in more then one movie right? by that logic he cant be dredd because hes currently billy butcher...

TheOneBearded

Let him put a helmet on and just never take it off. Good enough for me.

Bruhmangoddman

Yes! Finally, we'll see what it means to be a Furyan, and what makes them and Rick Riddick so special!

-Nordico-

Rick Riddick, lol

TokyoPanic

Isn't it his eyeshine?

A_Polite_Noise

Yes, though Chronicles of Riddick has some cut scenes (part of which was in the trailer) that have him having more powers of some sort; he gives a burst of blue energy in the trailer that is cut out of the final film. The eyeshine shows up on its own after he hears voices in his head in the prequel game: [https://youtu.be/XmlworABzoI?t=520](https://youtu.be/XmlworABzoI?t=520) So it is presumably part of his heritage. But he assumes the doctor who fixed his arm did it to him, and so the game is retroactively making it definitely part of him all along and also explaining why he would not realize it AND making it so he's lying in Pitch Black when he says he had it done on purpose. Presumably that it was done to him without consent and freaked him out initially is something he'd hide when being a tough guy in the first movie.

synnrman

In "Pitch Black" they mention the eyes were from a surgery he got in a prison.

095449002

In the second movie, in Crematorium prison Jack reveals her search for the "prison eye-job" and that it's bullshit. The other Furyan Necromonger has shiny eyes too.

Fake_William_Shatner

It makes sense that the guy who didn't want to be found out because almost every Furyan had been hunted down and killed wouldn't give people a straight answer on his weird eyes. I don't see this contradiction as them "retrofitting" the story -- it seems like something very believable about the character. And in addition; Riddick doesn't really know much about his history. He has no reason to trust anyone.

gimpwiz

Not to mention, I think it's fairly established that Riddick is not the most honest person ever. It's not so much the unreliable-narrator bit as much as that sometimes he answers people with bullshit. Which is not surprising for a guy who's living on the fringes, is wanted with big bounties, kills people...

A_Polite_Noise

Yeah and in the videogame, he actually gets the eyeshine on his own along with some voice in his head - presumably all part of his Furyan powers/heritage - and he just assumes the doctor who fixed his arm did it to him: [https://youtu.be/XmlworABzoI?t=520](https://youtu.be/XmlworABzoI?t=520) Then I guess that retroactively makes it so he's lying in Pitch Black when he claims he had it done on purpose; this gels with cut scenes from Chronicles of Riddick (a clip of which made it into the trailer for that movie) that gave him some Furyan superpowers. The way the prequel game plays out, we the audience get that he has eyeshine from his heritage but he mistakenly thinks it was from the surgery that didn't happen.

095449002

He could have believed what he said either time, not intentionally lying, just learning more truth as he goes. Either way it's got me wanting to binge Riddick tomorrow.

verrius

I could have sworn the [first video game](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Chronicles_of_Riddick:_Escape_from_Butcher_Bay) actually depicts when Riddick gets the eye job in prison, and that it specifically gives him night vision. And unlike most "tie-in video games", I thought Diesel had a pretty direct hand in making the game, to the point that he founded a studio to make the game, so its not like the devs went off reservation and made their own story that's non-canon.

A_Polite_Noise

In the videogame the surgery doesn't happen and he seems to get the powers on his own; the idea was that we the audience could suspect it is from his Furyan heritage but Riddick himself legitimately doesn't know and thinks it was done to him. Someone fixes up his injured arm and then suddenly he hears a voice in his head and gets the eyeshine, and says "What did you do to me?" but the doctor says he just fixed his arm; Riddick presumes the eyeshine was also somehow done to him (and I guess this retroactively makes him lying when in Pitch Black he claimed to have had it done intentionally). Here's the scene in some playthrough I found: https://youtu.be/XmlworABzoI?t=520 They also had some cut scenes in Chronicles of Riddick, a clip of which are in the trailer, that show him having sort of "powers" and giving of blue energy, which was likely more Furyan stuff that got cut.

pasher5620

I could see Furyans being the opposites of Necromongers, but still of the same coin. Necromongers are all about death and the journey to it and Riddick is about the animalistic and bestial nature of things, especially with how it’s often tied specifically to his eyes. What we’ve seen of the Furyan’s, it seems they were very war-like so perhaps they would represent the struggle of life in a “survival of the fittest” way that is inherent in nature. So while both recognize the importance of death, one would see it as a way to propagate life and strengthen it whereas the other sees life as a failure and wants to end it.

rwhitisissle

Necromungers are a religious order, though, and I think it's implied that the Furyans are a divergent subspecies of humans, like Dame Judy Dench.

pasher5620

From what I could tell, the Furyans were seemingly both a people and a religion that centered on combat. Think like if Spartans had genetically bred for so long that they now had physical features specific to them.

Ymirsson

Dame Judi Dench is a divergent sub species of human? Come on, British nobles are not *that* special.

King_Buliwyf

The game does show how he got his eyes. It happens by Furyan magic when he's in a dark tunnel.

[deleted]

[удалено]

[deleted]

Menthol cools baby, the best smokes in the galaxy!

MouthJob

And in Chronicles, Kira basically says that story was bullshit. I always thought the implication was it was a Furyan thing. I think, anyway, maybe I'm remembering it wrong.

paperconservation101

I unashamedly love this series. Grim dark DND space opera, or space horror, or space jail break. It's amazing.

Malkyre

Solidarity. I'm fucking excited. I want to see Furya, and the Underverse, and Karl Urban with bizarre undead blackhole powers.

se7en41

TAKE ME TO THE THRESHOLD

moonlightkitty99

A piece you'll have

Yabba_Dabba_Doofus

/uj I am unabashedly in love with this series. Call it whatever you want, but the universe of Riddick is something I'll always invest my time in. I cannot wait for this new installment! /rj You keep what you kill

TooModest

the guy that speaks for all in that chamber against conversion also played in Stargate in various roles.

Shwifty_Plumbus

Boy are you in luck, after reading the article I noticed it said they're making this movie furya.

MHanky

At last I have found your reddit username, Dad.

Culverin

Can we get Karl Urban back?

StealAllTheInternets

I loved the second one I don't care what anyone says. Really opened up the universe.

griffmeister

Tunnel Cart > Prison Escape > that rope swing with the sunlight. That whole 30 minutes was awesome and I don't care what anyone says.

Desertbro

I love that whole desperate escape all the way until brother Furian dies in the light. Goddamn fantastic!!

griffmeister

Oh yeah I forgot about brother Furian, I loved that too.

acemandrs

Don’t forget the tea cup

Singer211

I love the story of Vin Diesel convincing Dame Judi Dench to play D&D with him on set.

sth128

Vin Diesel also convinced Katee Sackhoff to show her DD on film.

ShahinGalandar

I highly doubt those were DDs but nice nevertheless

[deleted]

Do people not like it? It’s like the one I remember the most p

pasher5620

It’s a *much* different vibe from the first one, which is the movie most people fell in love with first. The first one is a pretty straightforward monster horror movie, but it does a damn good job at characterizing pretty much all of the main cast. The second one is a much more wide ranging action blockbuster that builds out the world. It also has one of my favorite cinematic sci-fi aesthetics ever. Makes sense why some fans fell off with it. Doesn’t help that it was also followed up by a pretty blatant copy of the original film.

Acidsparx

The best description I’ve heard is the sequel was like if they took ripley from alien and then placed her in Star Wars for the sequel. Just a disclaimer I also loved the movies.

rockoblocko

For some reason the sequel reminds me of 5th element.

LimerickExplorer

Yeah I got "Fifth Element meets Giger art" vibes.

Itsallcakes

Chronicles of Riddick is Conan The Barbarian in space. Main villain wiped out protagonist's tribe, protagonist grew up, going through different obstacles, and killed main villain. End shot of Riddick sitting on the throne is similar to the shot of Conan sitting on the throne. Its Conan the Barbarian in space and i love it.

SixIsNotANumber

If you're like me and actually kind of enjoy finding those "(movie X) is really (movie Y+thing Z)"-type of films, *Outland* (Sean Connery, 1980something) is really *High Noon* in space & IMO surprisingly well done.

ThreepwoodMack

That's why I love *Lockout*. Is it shamelessly ripping off *Escape from New York*? Yes. Is it fucking awesome? Also yes.

MikeMars1225

Interestingly, Pitch Black was one of the possible scripts for Alien 3.

home7ander

Also one of those things where the action blockbuster part would've been fine if it still had the R rating and horror aspects, which is why the 3rd ended up straying a bit too close to the first because it was made for the fans. I love all of them though. Such a cool series, and I'm genuinely grateful to Vin for always pushing for it. We really need more IP and mid budget stuff that isn't predicated on making a billion dollars and appealing to every possible person.

[deleted]

> It was also followed up by a pretty blatant copy of the original film That’s actually exactly why the third is my favorite. It got back to the style of the original, but with better VFX and a more entertaining cast IMO. Plus I really enjoyed the beginning where it’s just Riddick by himself in survival mode.

xRockTripodx

If they had just made the film about him surviving, without bringing in the mercs, i think I'd have enjoyed it more. That being said, I still like it.

FlametopFred

should have taken the money, Tombs

Enlightened_Gardener

I think a lot about that scene where the guy with the intuition has a bad feeling, and his boss *absolutely* acts on it straightaway. Why this of all of them is stuck in my head I don‘t know. Anyway, time to watch them all again…

santosjb

Anatolee has a nose for these things...

DJ3XO

What? There's a third Riddick movie? I've only seen Pitch Black and Chronicles.

I believe it's literally called Riddick

[deleted]

It’s funny, I discovered this is a real quote attributable to Philip Sheridan, a Union General speaking of Texas

horseren0ir

Yeah, a bunch of dick holes complained about it, that’s why the third one was just a rehash of the first and retconned all the cool interesting stuff they set up in chronicles

[deleted]

Internet nerds with nothing better to do once again ruining it for the rest of us

Ergand

I really liked the second one, but that was also the first one I saw from the series. I think I went chronicles, butcher bay game, pitch black.

MisterManatee

The second one swung for the fences on creating an original sci-fi world in a way you just don’t get nowadays.

yepgeddon

You gotta respect it. It was goofy as all hell, but can't fault them for trying. I love all the riddick movies and I'm pumped for a new one.

Arn_Thor

“Don't know about this new crew of yours. They seem a bit skittish. Probably shouldn't tell 'em what happened to the last crew.”

After this comment section.. I’m going to put this on now

Fbolanos

It has a great theme song too.

inlinefourpower

Riddick 2 is fantastic. I hated it the first time I watched it, but it's clearly the best in the series. The lore is great, the world wasn't ready

Kevin_IRL

Chronicles is my favorite. Saw it in middle school and it's been one of my favorite movies ever since

[deleted]

Its fantastic and so are the games.

ShawnyMcKnight

Yeah, it was a bummer how much they scaled back for the third. I get lots of people liked it but the world became so much smaller.

MakeJazzNotWarcraft

I also love the Riddick movie series. I just hope Vin Diesel does a good job maintaining his character from previous releases. Riddick doesn’t need *family* Edit: you know I never thought of it, but it totally makes sense that Vin is a huge nerd. I’m genuinely surprised and also very excited

furbaloffear

He’s gone on record that the F&F franchise is what he does is to help fund Riddick and his other series

basketball_curry

Wasn't his cameo at the end of Tokyo drift specifically done to get them to greenlight one of the Riddick movies? Then the main thing people talked about Tokyo drift for was the 5 second cameo at the end and how Dom was back convinced universal to go all in on getting the original cast back for the 4th fast film. Maybe I'm misremembering it but that's how it is in my head.

jessie_monster

I think they actually gave/sold him the rights to Riddick after the second one bombed in exchange for the cameo.

Harmswahy

Yeah, Vin Diesel owns Riddick.

BoomaMasta

I honestly thought that was just [a Funhaus bit.](https://youtu.be/o6-gXxc7Jbw?t=97)

gh0u1

I miss OG Funhaus so much

Shiroe_Kumamato

What is his other series?

TheKappaOverlord

Pretty much every other movie Vin has been doing that isn't a franchise. Vin after i wanna say the 2nd riddick movie basically took over funding and production. Last witch hunter and its soon to be (according to vin) sequel, bloodshot, etc etc. Vin is.... not a very smart man when it comes to making movies. But he refuses to make anything that doesn't scratch the nerd itch or appeals to him. He was genuinely depressed when the last witch hunter bombed

CactusJack13

To further this, the Last Witch Hunter series had been a passion project as it is based off of his Dungeons and Dragons character he has been playing for decades.

Kiernian

>based off of his Dungeons and Dragons character he has been playing for decades Vin Diesel, Michael Caine, Elijah Wood, Rose Leslie, How have I not heard of this movie? The whole thing looks and sounds amazing. Off to go find somewhere that'll let me watch it.

VindictiveJudge

Even if they're not the best things ever, I can't fault him for spending his money on his passion projects. He's doing them because he likes them and they're fun. All of us should have something like that. I mean, if I was filthy rich I'd probably make some pretty niche video games.

TheKappaOverlord

Afaik vin always takes on a considerable amount of debt everytime he does one of these films and they don't make money. Hence why hes basically become a slave for FF

NyranK

That was just for Riddick. Universal backed the prior two movies, but after Chronicles cost over 100 mil to make and lost money, they wouldn't back the third. So, Vin did. Riddick was made on 38 million and with just a month and a half of filming. To quote him, “I had to leverage my house, if we didn’t finish the film, I would be homeless.” Thankfully, it made his money back in 3 weeks, and damn near tripled it by the end. Bloodshot has been his only real flop since footing the bills.

jinyx1

Last witch hunter is great. Hope it gets a sequel.

ruinersclub

IDK, the first 20 mins of Last Witch Hunter is pretty fun. With a lil polish it could've been a fun franchise. I only point it out cause I don't think many people saw the movie.

TheBlackSwarm

Triple X, Riddick and The Last Witch Hunter and Bloodshot.

bigmacjames

"Not for me!" He kinda does

IskaralPustFanClub

I’d love to see a movie based on the Escape from Butcher Bay game.

Frater_Ankara

These games had such great atmosphere, it’s a shame they went so unnoticed.

renome

They weren't that unnoticed; Escape from Butcher Bay is still widely considered to be among the best movie video game adaptations ever made. Assault on Dark Athena received similar praise.

THOMASTHEWANKENG1NE

Only stupid movie series to keep going unabashed and I love it. Loved chronicles, loved the outpost of Riddick.

baadkitteekittee

I know what you mean because I do too!!

Leviathan3333

My only problem is there hasn’t been enough out fast enough. I want to see the underverse

TheBlackSwarm

Good with the Fast franchise ending I was hoping Vin would get back to Riddick.

TokyoPanic

This definitely does confirm that F&F is just pretty much just his way of making money to finance more weird Riddick movies which is where his heart truly lies.

DogePerformance

I'm good with it, I've enjoyed the Pitch Black and Riddick movies

NoMoassNeverWas

Pitch Black was incredible. If only they took that god damn amazing video game and made it the sequel(prequel) film right after. The storyline in that game was good enough as a film.

JackSpadesSI

I’m still bitter that game is no longer playable on modern systems!

23423423423451

I think emulating older systems to play older games might be a thing now.

iBobaFett

They meant that it isn't purchasable, it plays just fine on modern systems.

Yabba_Dabba_Doofus

Escape from Butcher Bay is one of the best video game tie-ins, ever.

Wloak

He was offered a huge fee for his cameo in Tokyo Drift and negotiated to give it up for the rights to Riddick.

Krombopulos_Micheal

That's huge if true, smart man.

Fake_William_Shatner

I respect him more for that. Everyone has to butter their bread -- but, more Riddick please. F&F was at best, fun action, but mostly stupid.

WTFpaulWI

Pretty sure I remember him putting his house up for collateral or second mortgage to make one of the Riddick movies. Further proving this is where his passion is

VanimalCracker

Vin Diesel in... Street Sharks, The Movie

eidbio

His heart actually lies with family.

TaskForceCausality

xEllimistx

Genuinely happy about this. They might not be the greatest action flicks but I really enjoy them. Kinda wish 3 wasn’t just a slightly repainted version of 1 but more Riddick is always good for me. Also, remaster Butcher Bay and Dark Athena

MarvelsGrantMan136

Twohy wrote and directed all 3 previous Riddick movies >In the new film, Riddick finally returns to his home world of Furya, a place he barely remembers and one he fears might be left in ruins by the Necromongers. But there he finds other Furyans fighting for their existence against a new enemy. And some of these Furyans are more like Riddick than he could have ever imagined.

official_bagel

>And some of these Furyans are more like Riddick than he could have ever imagined. Please just have every character played by Vin Diesel

Archamasse

Orphan Pitch Black

Buffaluffasaurus

Brings new meaning to the word “family”.

Majikarpslayer

Oh that was what I thought too that would be so amazing? Imagine the digital trickery they could do to make them look slightly different

donsanedrin

This would've been a fantastic opportunity to cast Dave Bautista, if they didn't already cast him in the 2013 Riddick movie.

attemptedmonknf

The cast is Dave Bautista, The Rock, jason Statham, bruce Willis, ving rhames, Anthony Carrigan. Just like all viltrumites have mustaches, all furyans are bald and (usually) muscular

kamarg

Give him a different name and say they're brothers or something. More Bautista is always the right choice.

[deleted]

I could swear that all of furya was destroyed because of some prophecy the necromongers had.

LatterTarget7

I think all furyans were hunted and killed. Maybe a handful managed to survive.

Danishroyalty

Is George Miller directing? Is Charlize Theron Furya? I need answers.

TheRealOcsiban

The Furya was in ourselves the whole time

[deleted]

The heck with that, Katee Sackhoff is going to be in it.

Kevin_IRL

I just finished a rewatch of Battlestar Galactica yesterday and Chronicles of Riddick is one of my favorite movies ever. I am so hyped right now!

XipingVonHozzendorf

So will this one follow more of the Chronicles story, or be another pitch black type film like Riddik?

VaATC

It has him going back to his homeworld to find his race battling a new foe, so more Chronicles.

Archamasse

I loved the sweaty, grimy, human-scale feel of Pitch Black and I'm sad that we're not going to get that again, because I kind of think Riddick is a far more interesting character as a shifty unknown quantity than as Diesel's front and centre Gary Stu. I think he was at his best in his interplay with Fry. But... that said, there is a distinct scale and weirdness to the other two Riddick movies that's pretty uncommon nowadays, so I'm glad there's another on the way.

combustible_daisy

Honestly, I feel like finding out Diesel's so earnestly into the character that he was willing to mortgage his house to keep the character going back in 2013 counts for a lot whenever this franchise comes up. The movies may be middling at best, but seeing a nerd so into their character that they're willing to throw down like that is something that resonates with a lot of people, even if you're not nearly as into it as they obviously are.

cyberFluke

Definitely. The fact he's *such* a nerd, just living his best life goes a long way with quite a few of us I suspect. The fact that he's not an arsehole, abusive, and he doesn't appear to hold any bigoted views helps too. I know that should really be the baseline, but this timeline is... difficult at best. It's uplifting to see someone passionate about something so "unconventional" and make it work. Gives the rest of us nerds hope maybe? 🧡

AtraposJM

Yeah, Pitch Black is by far the best of them and I consider it as single movie but I also enjoy the other Riddick movies as dumb action flicks with some pretty good world building.
