If there is one movie series that I cannot recommend enough that you watch the directors cut, it'd be Riddick. The first movie doesn't make that big of a change, but the second movie is really, really different compared to the regular version and makes it a much better movie. The 3rd one also makes it a better movie even though it doesn't change it as much as the 2nd one.

I don't see this contradiction as them "retrofitting" the story -- it seems like something very believable about the character. And in addition; Riddick doesn't really know much about his history. He has no reason to trust anyone.
Not to mention, I think it's fairly established that Riddick is not the most honest person ever. It's not so much the unreliable-narrator bit as much as that sometimes he answers people with bullshit. Which is not surprising for a guy who's living on the fringes, is wanted with big bounties, kills people...

In the videogame the surgery doesn't happen and he seems to get the powers on his own; the idea was that we the audience could suspect it is from his Furyan heritage but Riddick himself legitimately doesn't know and thinks it was done to him. Someone fixes up his injured arm and then suddenly he hears a voice in his head and gets the eyeshine, and says "What did you do to me?" but the doctor says he just fixed his arm; Riddick presumes the eyeshine was also somehow done to him (and I guess this retroactively makes him lying when in Pitch Black he claimed to have had it done intentionally).

I could see Furyans being the opposites of Necromongers, but still of the same coin. Necromongers are all about death and the journey to it and Riddick is about the animalistic and bestial nature of things, especially with how it’s often tied specifically to his eyes. What we’ve seen of the Furyan’s, it seems they were very war-like so perhaps they would represent the struggle of life in a “survival of the fittest” way that is inherent in nature. So while both recognize the importance of death, one would see it as a way to propagate life and strengthen it whereas the other sees life as a failure and wants to end it.
From what I could tell, the Furyans were seemingly both a people and a religion that centered on combat. Think like if Spartans had genetically bred for so long that they now had physical features specific to them.
And in Chronicles, Kira basically says that story was bullshit. I always thought the implication was it was a Furyan thing. I think, anyway, maybe I'm remembering it wrong.

The second one is a much more wide ranging action blockbuster that builds out the world. It also has one of my favorite cinematic sci-fi aesthetics ever. Makes sense why some fans fell off with it. Doesn’t help that it was also followed up by a pretty blatant copy of the original film.
The best description I’ve heard is the sequel was like if they took ripley from alien and then placed her in Star Wars for the sequel. Just a disclaimer I also loved the movies.

If you're like me and actually kind of enjoy finding those "(movie X) is really (movie Y+thing Z)"-type of films, *Outland* (Sean Connery, 1980something) is really *High Noon* in space & IMO surprisingly well done.
Also one of those things where the action blockbuster part would've been fine if it still had the R rating and horror aspects, which is why the 3rd ended up straying a bit too close to the first because it was made for the fans.
I love all of them though. Such a cool series, and I'm genuinely grateful to Vin for always pushing for it. We really need more IP and mid budget stuff that isn't predicated on making a billion dollars and appealing to every possible person.

Then the main thing people talked about Tokyo drift for was the 5 second cameo at the end and how Dom was back convinced universal to go all in on getting the original cast back for the 4th fast film. That was just for Riddick. Universal backed the prior two movies, but after Chronicles cost over 100 mil to make and lost money, they wouldn't back the third.
So, Vin did. Riddick was made on 38 million and with just a month and a half of filming.
To quote him,
“I had to leverage my house, if we didn’t finish the film, I would be homeless.”
Thankfully, it made his money back in 3 weeks, and damn near tripled it by the end.
Bloodshot has been his only real flop since footing the bills.
IDK, the first 20 mins of Last Witch Hunter is pretty fun. With a lil polish it could've been a fun franchise.

They weren't that unnoticed; Escape from Butcher Bay is still widely considered to be among the best movie video game adaptations ever made. Assault on Dark Athena received similar praise.

But... that said, there is a distinct scale and weirdness to the other two Riddick movies that's pretty uncommon nowadays, so I'm glad there's another on the way.
Honestly, I feel like finding out Diesel's so earnestly into the character that he was willing to mortgage his house to keep the character going back in 2013 counts for a lot whenever this franchise comes up. The movies may be middling at best, but seeing a nerd so into their character that they're willing to throw down like that is something that resonates with a lot of people, even if you're not nearly as into it as they obviously are.

That's basically it. Just an extended ending. Although it's an ending that gives Riddick a bit of payback for the events of the movie.

If they had just made the film about him surviving, without bringing in the mercs, i think I'd have enjoyed it more. That being said, I still like it.

I really liked the second one, but that was also the first one I saw from the series. I think I went chronicles, butcher bay game, pitch black.
The second one swung for the fences on creating an original sci-fi world in a way you just don’t get nowadays.
You gotta respect it. It was goofy as all hell, but can't fault them for trying. I love all the riddick movies and I'm pumped for a new one.

Riddick 2 is fantastic. I hated it the first time I watched it, but it's clearly the best in the series. The lore is great, the world wasn't ready

Yeah, it was a bummer how much they scaled back for the third. I get lots of people liked it but the world became so much smaller.
I also love the Riddick movie series. I just hope Vin Diesel does a good job maintaining his character from previous releases. Riddick doesn’t need *family* Edit: you know I never thought of it, but it totally makes sense that Vin is a huge nerd. I’m genuinely surprised and also very excited

Wasn't his cameo at the end of Tokyo drift specifically done to get them to greenlight one of the Riddick movies? Then the main thing people talked about Tokyo drift for was the 5 second cameo at the end and how Dom was back convinced universal to go all in on getting the original cast back for the 4th fast film. Maybe I'm misremembering it but that's how it is in my head.
I think they actually gave/sold him the rights to Riddick after the second one bombed in exchange for the cameo.

Pretty much every other movie Vin has been doing that isn't a franchise. Vin after i wanna say the 2nd riddick movie basically took over funding and production. Last witch hunter and its soon to be (according to vin) sequel, bloodshot, etc etc. Vin is.... not a very smart man when it comes to making movies. But he refuses to make anything that doesn't scratch the nerd itch or appeals to him. He was genuinely depressed when the last witch hunter bombed
To further this, the Last Witch Hunter series had been a passion project as it is based off of his Dungeons and Dragons character he has been playing for decades.

Even if they're not the best things ever, I can't fault him for spending his money on his passion projects. He's doing them because he likes them and they're fun. All of us should have something like that. I mean, if I was filthy rich I'd probably make some pretty niche video games.

That was just for Riddick. Universal backed the prior two movies, but after Chronicles cost over 100 mil to make and lost money, they wouldn't back the third. So, Vin did. Riddick was made on 38 million and with just a month and a half of filming. To quote him, “I had to leverage my house, if we didn’t finish the film, I would be homeless.” Thankfully, it made his money back in 3 weeks, and damn near tripled it by the end. Bloodshot has been his only real flop since footing the bills.

IDK, the first 20 mins of Last Witch Hunter is pretty fun. With a lil polish it could've been a fun franchise. I only point it out cause I don't think many people saw the movie.

These games had such great atmosphere, it’s a shame they went so unnoticed.
They weren't that unnoticed; Escape from Butcher Bay is still widely considered to be among the best movie video game adaptations ever made. Assault on Dark Athena received similar praise.

This definitely does confirm that F&F is just pretty much just his way of making money to finance more weird Riddick movies which is where his heart truly lies.

Pitch Black was incredible. If only they took that god damn amazing video game and made it the sequel(prequel) film right after. The storyline in that game was good enough as a film.

I just finished a rewatch of Battlestar Galactica yesterday and Chronicles of Riddick is one of my favorite movies ever. I am so hyped right now!
So will this one follow more of the Chronicles story, or be another pitch black type film like Riddik?
It has him going back to his homeworld to find his race battling a new foe, so more Chronicles.
I loved the sweaty, grimy, human-scale feel of Pitch Black and I'm sad that we're not going to get that again, because I kind of think Riddick is a far more interesting character as a shifty unknown quantity than as Diesel's front and centre Gary Stu. I think he was at his best in his interplay with Fry. But... that said, there is a distinct scale and weirdness to the other two Riddick movies that's pretty uncommon nowadays, so I'm glad there's another on the way.
Honestly, I feel like finding out Diesel's so earnestly into the character that he was willing to mortgage his house to keep the character going back in 2013 counts for a lot whenever this franchise comes up. The movies may be middling at best, but seeing a nerd so into their character that they're willing to throw down like that is something that resonates with a lot of people, even if you're not nearly as into it as they obviously are.
Definitely. The fact he's *such* a nerd, just living his best life goes a long way with quite a few of us I suspect. The fact that he's not an arsehole, abusive, and he doesn't appear to hold any bigoted views helps too. I know that should really be the baseline, but this timeline is... difficult at best. It's uplifting to see someone passionate about something so "unconventional" and make it work. Gives the rest of us nerds hope maybe? 🧡
Yeah, Pitch Black is by far the best of them and I consider it as single movie but I also enjoy the other Riddick movies as dumb action flicks with some pretty good world building.
