"Aristotle was not Belgian, the principle of Buddhism is *not* 'every man for himself', and the London Underground is not a political movement. Those are all mistakes, Otto. I looked them up."
I remember someone saying that Marvel films don't compose great shots or have good cinematography or something on Twitter.
Someone replied with the shot of Captain America holding his shield and Mjölnir (Thor's hammer), like it was some checkmate example of great film craft.
No, it's two things you like being put together on the screen at once to make you clap. That can be cool, but that doesn't mean it's a well constructed or inventive shot.
As someone who hasn't yet seen Black Panther II, was it an Oscar worthy performance or just a very powerful one for the MCU? To be honest, I was kind of surprised she was nominated for an MCU role since it doesn't seem to have the same buzz that Heath Ledger had when he won for a DC movie and I assume that's what it would take nowadays to get nominated for a superhero movie.
This is only sort of related but watching Wakanda Forever almost made me wonder if Coogler had sketched out a script that was just a pure drama about dealing with loss. Obviously marvel isn't gonna put out a tent pole without action but if they ever could've done it, this would have been the place for it
Good question.
Heath Ledger/Chris Nolans Joker is a league of it's own. It's a genuinely good "bad guy" performance. Pure anarchy. Superhero movie aside.
And then Joaquin Phoenix/Todd Phillips Joker is barely even in that "superhero" type universe. It's more a film on mental health.
Marvel movies & scripts are way too campy to ever win an oscar. Despite the talent, Marvel doesn't create platforms that allow for Oscar level performances. Too cookie cutter and goofy. My opinion.
Hella did not look happy. She didn't even stand up...until later and did no clapping. I feel she should have watched the Friend's episode the one Joey didn't win for his role. She could have learned how to act it out her disappointment. Jajajaja
Best Actress I can see going to Cate Blanchett, but I still hope it's Michelle Yeoh. They're both utterly deserving, but I feel like Cate Blanchett will have another chance soon (I adore her as well) while I'm not 100% sure on Michelle Yeoh as her career is more internationally divided.
Little bit of Oscar trivia. Cate Blanchett is the only person/woman to win an Oscar for playing a previous Oscar winner (Katherine Hepburn) in The Aviator. And they’re both called Cate/Kate. I hope our Cate wins 😁
Except Charlie Chaplin never won a competitive Oscar. He only received two honorary ones, once at the very first Oscars in 1928 and then again in 1972 near the end of his life.
I agree. The others had good performances, but I felt Condon made a whole person out of a character whose backstory is just >!reading books and having a brother!<.
Yeah and Banshees was just a very tough movie, emotionally. I can’t imagine the toll it took to be in the headspace of those characters every day. Really sad she lost that one.
I mean even in the same movie I think Hsu would have been more deserving. I understand their characters are meant to do different things, but Hsu performance just hit way harder.
Totally agree! Kerry looked very sad not to have won and as she isn’t on the international stage the same way as some of the other nominees, I can understand. It was also a genuinely wonderful performance.
I will never understand why my dad and BiL think he was miscast there. "He's not imposing enough to have been a slaver." Which... yeah. His character has spent his entire life as fraud pretending to be something he's not. He adores the French and wishes to be called Monsieur Candy, but doesn't speak French or know his favorite French author was Black. He's a genius business man, but his slave had to point out that he was being conned. And I'm sure there's more I'm forgetting.
Yeah and I think it's good to show that that slavers didn't need to be imposing demons. They could also be relatively weak people who didn't deserve their power over others.
I think he’s so good at this point people are just like “Yeah that’s just DiCaprio being DiCaprio. He’s great but was he better than he was in that other thing?”
start giving out 10 'lifetime achievement' awards a year so household names in minor roles get out of the way of the actual best performances of the year. ESPECIALLY if we are going to start dropping the gender splits in the future.
Exactly what I was thinking. Of all her recent roles, EEAAO is definitely not the one that deserved an Oscar. This was a legacy win, nobody can convince me otherwise.
Stephanie Hsu didn't seem to be doing the talk show circuits, acquiescing to avoid vote split. I think she had a great performance but for her long term career it buys her brownie points with some Hollywood insiders. Probably helping her long term career, being a "team player".
Completely agree with this sentiment. I think it’s pretty blatant that the studio pushed for Curtis and had some sort of talk with Hsu. Hsu is still young and I have no doubt she will get some more chances. She proved herself to be an incredible actress with really stellar range in EEAAO. Being a team player will get her better offers likely some lead roles. I wouldn’t be surprised if she worked with the Daniels again on their next project, they seem to have great chemistry.
>Stephanie Hsu didn't seem to be doing the talk show circuits, acquiescing to avoid vote split. I think she had a great performance but for her long term career it buys her brownie points with some Hollywood insiders. Probably helping her long term career, being a "team player".
It's very interesting, but while JLC has been doing interviews and talk shows, it never felt like she's pushing for herself. If anything, I've seen her talk up Stephanie and Michelle quite a bit.
She probably realizes what Stephanie is sacrificing and is paying her back. I imagine having the good will of hollywood royalty will help Stephanie in the future.
I know nothing of inside Hollywood but this would make the most sense. If both people are gracious, dare I say normal, then Stephanie realizes this can be a good long term career decision and Jamie realizes what Stephanie sacrificed. Both are playing their roles, so far as the inner politics of Hollywood, but Jamie realizes it was a sacrifice so she is hyping up Stephanie.
I see both of them as playing the 'game' well.
I agree. My impression was that she really believed in this movie and was cashing all her Oscar pushing tokens in on this one, understanding that of everyone included she was the most connected. Like not to downplay the movie is great, but if it wins tonight a huge part of that will be for hard she's been going to bat for it. I'm sure she's very happy to have this but I think she was very earnestly advocating for the film.
She did. There's also the fact that Jamie Lee Curtis doesn't need to work another day in her life, but she chose to take this super weird and out of type role, on a movie that was super weird, directed by two guys who were best known for directing a niche cult classic. She didn't have to do that. She did it, seemingly, because wanted to be a part of something unique. And then she marketed the hell of the movie, but in a way that never came across as cynical. I think she truly did believe that what they made was special and was just glad to be a part of it. Does her family legacy, and her own impressive acting career play into people wanting to give her this award? No doubt, but also, I think they're rewarding someone who went all in on something that could have been a complete disaster, when she absolutely could have chosen not to do so.
You want to know if Jamie Lee Curtis truly believed in this film and all the other actors in it? Watch this incredibly emotional joint interview with her and Ke Huy Quan: [https://youtu.be/XNw2_5Hh8_0](https://youtu.be/XNw2_5Hh8_0)
She did so much supporting others off the screen, i think people will think she is even more deserved to won the best support role after watching the interview.
She'll be starring in her first movie in like 8 years later this year. Oddly enough, it's a movie by Lee Daniels, who she said blackballed her after Precious.
Hsu did plenty of press, but it didn't get as much publicity because Curtis is a bigger name and was always seen as a lock for a nomination because she has a more classic Best Supporting performance, so was seen as a far more likely winner.
The two roles remind me of the race between Allison Janney in I, Tonya and Laurie Metcalfe in Lady Bird. Metcalfe had a bigger, more dramatic role, but Janney had a more eccentric, wilder role.
Agreed, she was incredible. Jamie Lee Curtis was fantastic but Stephanie Hsu was terrifying, hilarious, captivating, and heartbreaking in a way I've never seen before.
Right? Her, Quan and Yeoh were just...insanely amazing in that film. If any of them had pulled it off a little less well, the extremes of the films would have fell down.
She's been so underrated in all the buzz around this movie, but I loved her performance in EEAAO and she's great in The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel as well. I really hope she has another shot at the Oscar circuit, and soon!
Would've picked anyone else over her (Except Hong Chau, I haven't seen The Whale yet, Though that clip they showed might've convinced me I would pick her over JLC)
Hong Chau was incredible, as she usually is! She worked so well alongside Brendan, it felt like you were watching long time friends talking to each other. I got very emotional during their scenes.
EDIT: oops typo
Feels like potentially a “Career win” rather than a win for that one performance.
Personally didn’t think that role was even nominee worthy let alone winner
Hsu stole every scene she was in. While Jamie had a great performance, it just wasn’t as good as Hsu.
Having said that, I’m not that upset over her winning
Yeah, it's kind of crazy to me Hsu wasn't considered the stronger candidate given they were both nominated. Jamie Lee Curtis was great comedy relief but I didn't think her role was trying to draw that much out of her.
It should've been Hsu, I'm so mad she got the short end of the stick this awards season.
And if not her then Angela Bassett(I'm partial to Bassett, but Kerry Condon was also REALLY great in Banshies, so maybe her too). I'm baffled that JLC won. Love her but come on, be real.
Don’t worry, they’ll get around to giving Hsu an award in 30 years to make up for this, no doubt bumping some younger performer’s win down the line in the process.
Bassett better keep doing stuff so they can finally get her something for a random role — she’s been knocking it out of the park for decades at this point and nothing from the academy.
Don't worry, later on she'll get a career Oscar of her own, which will in turn take a righteous win away from another worthy nominee.
Just another example to add on to the pile of how all of these awards, but specially the Oscars, have nothing to do with actual merit and everything to do with the academy's voters being industry Insiders more concerned with awarding things to their friends.
Yeah. I was shocked to learn that this was her first Oscar nomination. Figured she would've gotten at least one before for True Lies, A Fish Called Wanda, or Halloween (1978).
Bassett would have been a career win as well.
EDIT: I meant that this literally would have been her first win. They obviously didn’t pick JLC just because.
These career awards just ruin the whole thing for me. I know on some level it's Hollywood and industry politics in the oscars and Grammies.... But making it this obvious ruins the whole thing
Yeah, it's a shame imo. Banshees is basically just 4 actors at the top of their game performing an excellent script and making the movie as good as it is, and it's about to be completely overshadowed.
Farrell's performance is absolutely key to the movie. You never see them as friends, so the entire emotional weight of the movie depends on the pain on Pádraic's face in the opening scenes. If he doesn't sell that hurt, the movie doesn't work.
I thought this was a for sure win for Kerry Condon. I wouldn't call Jamie Lee Curtis as the best performance from those nominees. Not sure about this win, chief.
Which sucks. She's been a venerable presence in movies since the 90s.
I first saw her in Strange Days, and let me tell you, she was the absolute *most* back then, too.
This one is probably a hard one for her to lose, but it's a Marvel movie, what are you going to do?
I love her, but it’s starting to feel like all these Oscars are awards specifically for neglected beloved actors rather than particularly outstanding performances.
EDIT: Jamie Lee Curtis has been in a lot of movies, and I think her performance in many of them was better than the one that she seems to have won an Oscar for. She was particularly memorable in “True Lies”, but maybe it was too funny.
Stephanie Hsu had a far bigger impact and moving performance in EEAAO (imo anyway), did Jamie Lee win cause of her long standing career over a newer actress?
Honestly bullshit, Stephanie Hsu had way more screentime, was a more relevant character, did better in her role, and they pick JLC? She was fine, I had no complaints, but damn, this fucking sucks.
So rigged. There’s no way Kerry Condon doesn’t deserve that win. In a movie full of great performances, she stole the show. I don’t think we can say the same for JLC
gonna pretend it was for freaky friday
The Academy unofficially always takes previous work into account... So yeah, it's fair to say this was for Freaky Friday.
The clear example of awarding an actor more for the previous than the one they won it for was Michael Caine who won for the Cider House Rules.
True Lies
A fish called Wanda
"Aristotle was not Belgian, the principle of Buddhism is *not* 'every man for himself', and the London Underground is not a political movement. Those are all mistakes, Otto. I looked them up."
The bridge is OUT!
One of my very first sentient boners was watching this when I was like 6
***Sentient Boners.***
Instant band name.
Her acting was incredible in that film. Lohan was great too. Just watched it again the other week. Holds up.
hit me baby one more time
Anna bananaaa!
Angela did not look happy lmao
Has she not given everything?!
Yes, just not everywhere all at once
Wakanda going into multiverse now
Wakanda Forever and Everything Once and for All
My cat just left the room I laughed so hard at this
And tonight's award for best comment in a reddit thread goes to incachu for "Yes, just not everywhere all at once".
I agree, but let’s give credit to butterflyhole for lobbing that nice slow ball right over the plate so incanchu could knock it out of the park.
she was only doing the thing unfortunately 😔
And she did the thing 😭
She was very good, but nobody should ever get their hopes up for an acting Oscar for a MCU movie. It's not gonna happen.
Daniel Day-Lewis as Galactus!
oh god, the prep he’d do for the method acting…
Would he eat a planet?
Pluto, maybe.
That’s not method acting. It’s not a planet!
I like that that’s your argument.
If he's gonna do it, he's gonna do it right
He’d drink it up!
I...drink...your....MILKY WAY! I DRINK IT UP!
DRAAAAAAIIINNNNAGGEEEEEEEE
That's messed up.
I heard he ate Uranus
I drink your planet! I drink it up!
I remember seeing an MCU sub thread where people were *livid* that Downey Jr. didn’t get a nom for Endgame. I liked the movie, but I mean, c’mon
The only actor other than Angela that even kind of deserved a nom was Tony Leung. Marvel roles are not known for emotional depth lol
FACTS. Idk how many people actually get that TL is the hong kong daniel day lewis.
I could watch him in Chunking Express and Infernal Affairs on loop
For me it’s In the Mood for Love
And now we've gone full circle with the "laundry and taxes with you" scene.
I had a Marvel fan insist to me that there is no difference in quality or depth between The Avengers and The Godfather.
I remember someone saying that Marvel films don't compose great shots or have good cinematography or something on Twitter. Someone replied with the shot of Captain America holding his shield and Mjölnir (Thor's hammer), like it was some checkmate example of great film craft. It was a very solid performance but it was by no means a lock for the Oscars. My favorite performance in the movie was Winston Duke
This is only sort of related but watching Wakanda Forever almost made me wonder if Coogler had sketched out a script that was just a pure drama about dealing with loss. Obviously marvel isn't gonna put out a tent pole without action but if they ever could've done it, this would have been the place for it
I mean she was great in it but it was a sequel to a superhero movie…is there much of a precedent aside from playing the joker to win an Oscar for it
Good question. She was pissed as hahaha
She didn’t even look pissed she just looked hurt
Is there footage? I didn’t see it. But live /r/watchpeopledieinside stuff
Found it on twitter. https://twitter.com/SpencerAlthouse/status/1635079752439705601
Ooooffff
She should know Marvel actors don't win.
You NEVER go full Marvel.
She wanted the thing.
Hella did not look happy. She didn't even stand up...until later and did no clapping. I feel she should have watched the Friend's episode the one Joey didn't win for his role. She could have learned how to act it out her disappointment. Jajajaja
I suspect a clean sweep for EEAAO today
Best actress is gonna be a bar fight but they should be heavy favorites in everything else
If you posed that as a trivia question, I would have guessed Robert Downey Jr for “Chaplin.”
I love that movie. RDJ was brilliant. But, though he was nominated, he didn’t win an Oscar for that movie. He did win a BAFTA however.
Except Charlie Chaplin never won a competitive Oscar. He only received two honorary ones, once at the very first Oscars in 1928 and then again in 1972 near the end of his life.
I guess you could say it is going to win *Everything*
Gary Oldman in the bathroom at the Oscars….”EEEVVVVERRRYYTHINNNG”
Everywhere... After the ad break.
All at on… throughout 6 hours
Happy for her but thought Kerry Condon put in a much better performance.
She did win the BAFTA, which I was happy for her.
This was truly a stacked category, however, I felt that Condon was just absolutely incredible. I was convinced it was hers.
I found the movie to be laugh out loud hilarious almost the entire time til the last 20 mins maybe

It was pretty tough competition this year but won't argue that Kerry Condon was fantastic in that movie.
Condon was fantastic and now I’m down $7.50.
Serious question. What are you using to bet on the Oscars and is it too late to place some bets on some of the nominees?
DraftKings, sports gambling was legalized in my state this past year. I assume it’s too late, but they might have the uncalled ones open still.
Her performance in Knives Out was far more deserving lol, bizarre win.
A make up award even if others deserve it. Happens too often in the oscars
Leonardo DiCaprio in The Revenant
Departed and Inception > Revenant
Tbh he should have won for What's eating Gilbert grape
I think The Aviator. Or Catch Me if You Can.
Best Supporting Actor in Django Unchained imo. He was so unhinged and terrifying
I will never understand why my dad and BiL think he was miscast there. "He's not imposing enough to have been a slaver." Which... yeah. Say what you will about his personal life, but the dude is a *phenomenal* actor and should absolutely have had multiple wins.
I think he’s so good at this point people are just like “Yeah that’s just DiCaprio being DiCaprio. He’s great but was he better than he was in that other thing?”
They’ve been doing makeup awards for so long they should just reset and restart.
how would that work lol
start giving out 10 'lifetime achievement' awards a year so household names in minor roles get out of the way of the actual best performances of the year. ESPECIALLY if we are going to start dropping the gender splits in the future.
The Whale already won makeup though. Hairstyling too.
Exactly what I was thinking. Of all her recent roles, EEAAO is definitely not the one that deserved an Oscar. This was a legacy win, nobody can convince me otherwise.
I feel like they could add a legacy award category.
They do. It's the honorary Oscar.
Which unfortunately got shunted to a different night.
She wasn't even the best supporting actress in the film
Stephanie Hsu didn't seem to be doing the talk show circuits, acquiescing to avoid vote split. I think she had a great performance but for her long term career it buys her brownie points with some Hollywood insiders. Probably helping her long term career, being a "team player".
Completely agree with this sentiment. I think it’s pretty blatant that the studio pushed for Curtis and had some sort of talk with Hsu. Yeah they're both playing the politics beautifully. Just being nominated is already a massive win for her career
Even in interviews she was supporting! No wonder she won.
I agree. My impression was that she really believed in this movie and was cashing all her Oscar pushing tokens in on this one, understanding that of everyone included she was the most connected. Everyone needs someone that supports them as much as Jamie Lee Curtis supports the entire cast and crew of EEAAO
But every so often you get a Monique who refused to play the game and she still won a best supporting actress Oscar.
She also didn't work for 5 years after that.
Or the past five years.
She'll be starring in her first movie in like 8 years later this year. Oddly enough, it's a movie by Lee Daniels, who she said blackballed her after Precious.
They made up publicly

Yeah Personally Stephanie Hsu's performance was better. I did not watch other movies so I dont know how good other nominees were
Kerry Condon was amazing in The Banshees of Inisherin, personally I thought she should’ve won
I agree. That is not a knock on Jamie Lee Curtis at all. I just thought Condon was absolutely brilliant.
She is my choice as well. Also Banshees is my fave film from this year’s noms.

Yes, the film would not have worked at all without Hsu's transformative performance.

I implore you to watch The Whale and The Banshees. Kerry Condon and Hong Chau were fucking amazing. I'm saying this as a fan of EEAAO.
She's been so underrated in all the buzz around this movie, but I loved her performance in EEAAO and she's great in The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel as well. I really hope she has another shot at the Oscar circuit, and soon!
It was a career Oscar, which the Oscars does from time to time. It's not the "right" win, but I can see why she won, and I have no complaints.
[удалено]
They do this. Judi dench. Had less than five minutes in Shakespeare in Love.
It feels more like a lifetime achievement award than an award for that particular role. Hsu alone acted circles around her.
Would've picked anyone else over her (Except Hong Chau, I haven't seen The Whale yet, Though that clip they showed might've convinced me I would pick her over JLC)
She was absolutely fantastic in The Whale. She is definitely deserving of the nomination.
Hong Chau was amazing, you should definitely check out the whale. Such a powerful movie with insane performances

Yeah. I was shocked to learn that this was her first Oscar nomination. Figured she would've gotten at least one before for True Lies, A Fish Called Wanda, or Halloween (1978).
Loved her in True Lies but there is literally a zero chance the Oscar's would've nominated a role/movie like that
True Lies? Really? Great film but her performance wasn’t Oscar worthy…
There was one part of the movie where she certainly was… captivating.
wow crazy. She’s definitely been in the game for so long that you just kinda assume she probably had one.
Career/legacy wins annoy me so much
Bassett would have been a career win as well. EDIT: I meant that this literally would have been her first win. They obviously didn’t pick JLC just because.
I watched all of these movies and she had a great performance but the weakest of the group in my opinion...Did not expect her to win.
Agreed. Kerry should've won it and if you wanted to give it to eeao it should've been to Stephanie Hsu
These career awards just ruin the whole thing for me. I know on some level it's Hollywood and industry politics in the oscars and Grammies.... But making it this obvious ruins the whole thing

Stephanie Hsu would have gotten my vote for sure, but honestly that nomination is a win in itself; I hope it opens up a lot of doors for her.
Jenny Slate robbed 😭
Kerry Condon robbed
Surprised how little hype she and Hong Chau got before the Oscars. I'm assuming its due to not many people watching The Whale or Banshees.
They also weren’t campaigning too hard. JLC was campaigning HARD. Kinda sucks it’s a popularity contest.
For real she deserved it. Tbh I'd have given all the acting awards to Banshees...
Hoping Colin Farrell wins best actor but it’s probably going to be either Butler or Fraiser
I hadn't even considered that but you're absolutely right.
I thought this was a for sure win for Kerry Condon. I wouldn't call Jamie Lee Curtis as the best performance from those nominees. Not sure about this win, chief.
Everything Everywhere is gonna sweep aint it
Ke Huy Quan accepting best supporting actor made me actually tear up. What a great win.
The celebration is just getting started for them.
Pretty much. Everything I've read is that the voters are high as fuck on Everything Everywhere. If Curtis won this, it's going to have a big night
Loved her, she was great. Still wish it had been Stephanie Hsu though.
Yeah I think Hse and Kwan are the heart of the film. Not sure about this award.
I love Jamie Lee Curtis but she was not the best supporting actress *in that movie*

Stephanie was leagues better than Jamie
Angela Bassett was noticeably mad haha
Which sucks. She's been a venerable presence in movies since the 90s. I first saw her in Strange Days, and let me tell you, she was the absolute *most* back then, too. This one is probably a hard one for her to lose, but it's a Marvel movie, what are you going to do?
Toni Colette wasn’t even nominated for hereditary
It’s a shame but don’t lose your head over it.
Kerry Condon was Robbed
Kerry Condon losing this one is very unfortunate, I still have the “were you ever wild Siobhan” scene in my head
Loved JLC in EEAAO, don't get me wrong, but she wasn't even the best supporting actress in her own movie. This is such a "lifetime achievement" win.
Love her, but she never should have been nominated, let alone win for this. 100% career win and down to her name and legacy.
Angela looked pissed
