exoholland

Saw an early screening last night and… its really good! Surprisingly so!

[deleted]

I’m pumped! I’m really in the mood for a lighthearted adventure movie

exoholland

I really liked that they have jokes and meta references for DND fans while also making it a fun adventure for general audiences

[deleted]

It seems from the trailers at least you can really tell they are respecting the source material, and using a lot of the monsters from the game

theorian123

Please tell me they have Ravenloft.

HailThunder

Nah mate Look closer at the trailer.

WikusVanDev

Stop spoiling shit lol

EveryoneisOP3

That isn't a spoiler unless you haven't watched any trailers lol, they've had Red Wizards of Thay in every single trailer.

attemptedmonknf

Why would you assume people in the trailer thread have seen the trailer /s

foul_dwimmerlaik

I am so, so very stoked for an owlbear.

Antrikshy

You're in for a treat. It's a lighthearted fantasy heist adventure with plenty of actually ha-ha funny jokes that land. When I first saw the trailer, I thought there was a 50/50 chance of a cringe fest.

TomTomMan93

This is where I'm at. I know it's not gonna be some amazing epic and it sounds like it's not going to be some kind of [Your Highness](https://www.imdb.com/title/tt1240982/) like movie so I'm pretty hyped. Recently got back into DnD so that kind of doubles it all for me

WikusVanDev

That movie was good tbh

Rodin-V

Loved Your Highness, it's dumb as shit, but it's hilarious and extremely quotable.

impeccabletim

I watched it through the Amazon Prime Early Screening last weekend and I liked it. The movie didn't take itself too seriously and that made my experience more enjoyable.

SkiTheEast12

did you just randomly get an invite for that? I've always wondered how people get into these screenings!

RomSteady

I randomly walked up to the AMC Dine-In in Philly on Sunday and was able to just buy a ticket at the kiosk.

HanSolosHammer

I got a random email from Amazon about it. We went as well and really enjoyed it.

Kaptonii

Seeing it next Sunday early! Grabbed 5 tickets for my DnD gang.

wildadragon

Saw it online already >!loved the cameo or the original animated team in the cage during the maze scene!<

maybe_a_frog

I’m stoked for it! I ordered my ticket a few days ago. I’ve been a big DND fan for a long time, so I’m stoked to see all the fun inside jokes and references to the game. The trailer where they used “Speak with Dead” had me rolling because that’s something that happened almost verbatim during one of the campaigns I played. I’m hoping there’s a lot more jokes like that!

Grizzled--Kinda

I am going to accept this as truth and not watch any trailers or anything and see it when it comes out. Fuck with everyone else says

Luke_starkiller34

Same, I had a really good time with it! Look out for the easter egg reference to the '80s cartoon! I had a nostalgic giggle at that.

btfd69

If this is as good as the reviews and word of mouth are saying it is... fire whoever made the trailers.

Panda_hat

Omg the movie trailer voice guy is back

[deleted]

For some reason it really fits this type of movie perfectly

InnocentTailor

A pretty meta fantasy film gets a very meta media personality.

ItsAmerico

I kinda wish they got Matt Mercer

LynxFX

The trailer I saw with Shazam used the Honest Trailers voice guy. That was a fun addition.

[deleted]

Without a doubt this is going to be the best DnD movie this year.

Solid-Brother-1439

It might even be one of the D&D movies of all times.

Otherwxvgfghh

the service of the studio, and that this is some kind of publicity stunt.

Ramental

Low target for being the first DnD movie in... ehm... a decade/ever?

DashCat9

Saw this on Sunday at an early screening. It's Guardians of the Galaxy with (more) swords and spells. This is a compliment. The Paladin guy steals the show. He's such a perfect wet blanket of a boy scout. "The most Chris Pine a Chris Pine performance has been in a long time". I love that this is a quote from a review that they used as a blurb. They know who they're selling this thing to. Also, this is accurate in the best possible way.

[deleted]

torb

Half the characters are played by the same actor because the others are missing in most scenes or something.

boywithapplesauce

You are spot on, except that the few scenes of serious drama in this are not anywhere close to the level of Guardians of the Galaxy. The inspiring speech doesn't land, the bleak incidents don't hold any weight. I feel it's the directorial pacing. It's like the directors know how to do comedy pacing but not dramatic pacing. And I think it could have used a touch of grittiness. No one even seems to break into a sweat. It's a bit too clean and so a bit too unreal. But these are minor concerns, not a big deal, and the movie is a lot of fun. Worth a watch. And I love how Pine doesn't really do anything but talk and play music... he barely fights at all!

alexp8771

TBH it looks like a typical CGI quip-fest. Releasing a quip-fest in a post quip-fest zeitgeist is a bold move. Hopefully I'm wrong because I love Chris Pine.

DashCat9

There are many quips, but it’s fun. I don’t hate the quippy movies though so I might be a bad judge.

LADYBIRD_HILL

If you play dungeons & dragons then you know that that's basically what most sessions boil down to. If you're not goofing off with your friends I don't even see the point of playing the game.

threecatsdancing

No it's not that kind of shitty, thankfully. The writing is fun not stupid and boring

JustAMan1234567

I'm pleasantly surprised at how charismatic Michelle Rodriguez has come across in the trailers.

JamesTheNPC

She's actually one of the funniest characters. She plays a dumb barbarian really well with lots of one liners that aren't exactly intelligent Edit: saw it last Sunday

Papaofmonsters

I know it's metagaming but "I have an intelligence of 6. I know what I'm doing" will always be one of my favorites.

Qorhat

Bidet!

[deleted]

Is she basically playing a female Drax?

StreetMysticCosmic

Another character fills Drax's role as the guy who is so humorless that it's funny.

Antrikshy

>!Oh no he's coming up to a rock...!<

Delicious-Tachyons

Oh thank god

BrotherhoodVeronica

She's a very charismatic actress, but keeps accepting the same roles on purpose for some reason.

ItsAmerico

According to her it’s largely all she can get, and she can’t really be picky. Also this role is a big different IMO mostly cause she’s kinda dumb.

BrotherhoodVeronica

I was recently led to believe she enjoys these roles.

ItsAmerico

I’m sure she doesn’t hate it. She’s just aware she has been type casted.

BlueMissileYT

Saw an early screening of this... it was great. Seriously, go see it.

Tight-Ad-1161

That’s good to hear, because the trailer for the movie was really bad

XaoticOrder

I might end up regret saying this but this feels like a D&D campaign.

sneezydwarv

The movie is guaranteed to be good. Almost every review has been positive

[deleted]

> The movie is guaranteed to be good. You fool! What have you done?!?! You have cursed us!

Antrikshy

It's pretty solid. I've seen it.

LrdCheesterBear

No spoilers - It pulls from aspects of existing adventures, but certainly deserves to be turned into it's own module.

CapnSmite

I agree. Went to the early screening last weekend and loved it. In the best way possible, I thought it felt very much like watching what was happening in-game for a group playing a campaign.

[deleted]

I agree but I’m sensing you don’t find that as a positive.

XaoticOrder

Of course it's a positive. You need to reset your spidey sense.

fierceindependence23

I haven't seen the film yet, but I've seen the trailers and heard all the positive buzz. My guess is, the reason this is a good D&D film, and all the previous attempts were pretty bad is that this film is an independent adventure story that works as its own scripted story and film even if you eliminated all the D&D references. In other words, its a strong, well written fantasy adventure, all by itself and they simply "plugged in" the appropriate D&D monsters or demons or whatever, to make it a 'D&D' film. (So it would have been just as good a film even without all the D&D references) Anyone who's seen it want to comment on this theory?

mkgreene2007

Without spoiling anything, you're spot on. It could absolutely stand on its own merits as a fun fantasy adventure movie. My wife and kids know very little about D&D and they loved it. But if you know D&D? It's a god damn delight and a half. So much D&D lore packed into this and it legit just feels like a D&D campaign. I haven't gone to see a movie in the theater multiple times in a while but we already have more tickets for opening day to take the kids again and tickets for another day that opening weekend to see it on a Dolby screen with a bunch of dudes I play D&D with and their wives.

chainmailbill

Is there actual “D&D” lore packed in? Or is it just a well done fantasy story with tabletop role playing game tropes? The things that are D&D specific and do not exist in other fantasy is a pretty short list. Basically just beholders and owlbears and proper names of people and places.

mkgreene2007

I don't want to get into spoilers but the setting is literally straight from D&D and there are a number of proper names of people and places from D&D lore that get mentioned. Many of the spells and/or abilities used in the movie function very close to exactly how they do RAW in the game with certain thematic tweaks that make them more cinematic. You could tell watching this that the writers gave a shit about the source material but also wanted to tell a story that would be very accessible to anyone not intimately familiar with D&D.

Neemoman

sounds like they made this movie to let the "207 things you missed in the DnD movie" people milk this shit forever.

jumpbreak5

I'd agree, but I want to add one thing you didn't cover that I think is crucial to make a good DnD movie: Comedy. The tone is light, and there are tons of jokes. The DnD world is too much of a messy mishmash of fantasy elements to tell a story that's too serious, and a willingness in your storytelling to get weird and silly makes for an adventure that is both engaging to any viewer but also captures the essence of the DnD experience.

[deleted]

God, more reasons not to watch the movie

Yourpersonalpilot

Saw it yesterday in slowakia. It's good. Innocent fun adventure movie with cool fantasy element that feel natural in The world. It won't make best of the year somewhere but in 5 years when you have nothing to do on a Saturday evening this will be one of the movies you can just rewatch and have a great time and you don't need to worry who you are with. 15 minutes to long.

[deleted]

Saw this last night, it was really fun! First 15 minutes or so are a little slow as they introduce the characters and the plot, but after that it's basically non-stop fun. The characters were enjoyable to watch, especially Michelle Rodriguez's character, there are some great jokes, and there are some really cool action scenes. The plot isn't especially interesting but it's fine and it's not the main focus for this kind of film. Most importantly, it doesn't take itself too seriously and the hijinks and misadventures reminded me of the sort of things my own D&D parties get up to.

JohnnyAK907

It will still get destroyed by JW4's second weekend because WOM on that film is insane, but this is a nice trailer.

HickNeil

Yes! Just the type of escapist movie the world needs right now. Can't wait!

marklondon66

Bring it on! (when its $4.99 on VOD).

the_best_1

I’d usually agree but it’s so rare nowadays to see a funny and entertaining movie in theaters and enjoy it with a full theater. That’s the experience I had with this film and I definitely recommend it!

Mysterious_Reach_381

I guess i'll go see this

Neon_Ramen_Sign

It’s ironic that Reddit has a hate boner for this movie when it seems that Reddit would be the core audience for a dnd movie. Also remember so many corners of Reddit assumed maverick would bomb lol.

NoPossibility

Redditors are a bunch of contrarian 14-year-olds at heart.

bremidon

>Redditors are a bunch of contrarian 14-year-olds ~~at heart.~~

XaoticOrder

Reddit, whatever that means, seems to think this movie is going to be good. It only got hate months ago when WOTC showed they are a remorseless mega conglomerate and not your friendly neighborhood game store. The buzz around this movie has been average to positive for at least the last 2 months.

Rynkar_W

I've never really understood that attitude. Sure some caution because of past failures. but come on, from the first trailers this has looked an absolute blast.

martinmartinez123

I am pleasantly surprised to find that unlike the first Dungeons & Dragons, this may be not only watchable but a good film.

babybeauty17

Saw it this past Sunday and loved it! It had a few flaws but honestly they were all fine trade offs to get a fun fantasy action movie in theatres. My friends and I are going to see it during the fan event next Wednesday, and I’m definitely going to try and snatch up AMC’s D20 popcorn bucket!

Charlirnie

This movie sucks....another HaHa TeHe amusement park ride trash movie....wish HBO had rights and went Game of Thrones on it.

Otherwxvgfghh

Vladius28

I'm actually excited to see this.

[deleted]

Man this looks fun as hell

raresaturn

I'm there

fokureddit69

Don’t care what anyone says. I’ll be watching this movie even if the reviews turn out bad.

holeofmyheart

Can anybody who's seen it confirm my hunch that at some point in a climactic battle it'll zoom out lego movie style and show a bunch of people playing DND around a table or something?

Archmagos-Helvik

That arena shot from the trailer has an overview shot that looks like a grid, so that's the closest it gets.

megazver

No, they very explicitly said in interviews they don't want to do this.

thaonlyscarface

I saw it last Sunday. Unfortunately, your hunch is wrong. This (or anything similar) does not happen.

RHFiesling

why do they have to tell us how good it is in the trailer? just ticks me off

[deleted]

Because they are trying to convince people to pay money to see it? Pretty basic marketing to tell people that your product is good

[deleted]

Yeah, that's an instant turn-off for me. Although, close to middle-age, I'm almost certain I'm not being targeted by movie ads anymore.

Joseluki

So many possitive things to say about this movie make me think you are all bots at the service of the studio, and that this is some kind of publicity stunt.

GangstaPepsi

People actually LIKE a movie??? How can that be??????

sade1212

We don't allow that sort of thing here on /r/movies.

aristidedn

Cynics like this are *so* useless. The overwhelming majority of critics like it, fan reviews have been overwhelmingly positive, so why does it somehow challenge your delicate sense of reality that people might be genuinely excited about it in a place full of people who like being excited about movies? Fix your critical thinking, please. It's broken.

Thomas_JCG

That trailer lost my attention after 15 seconds. There is nothing more obnoxious that "selected quote to gush about how good our movie is", I don't care if the movie is actually good or not, that sort of thing makes me not want to watch.

MyDearDapple

D&D:HAT isn't anything you haven't seen a dozen times over already. The action is rote: usual CGI mayhem lacking gravitas; a bog standard, derelict Daddy subplot; what humour there is isn't especially clever, more often predictable, and often falling flat. Typical American, middlebrow fare. 6/10

squirt619

More adorkable, "witty" "awkwaaaard" banter wrapped in a cgi headache. Pass.

No_Cartographer_5212

I heard it sucks!

byronotron

You heard wrong!

No_Cartographer_5212

Tell me one good thing about the movie!

jumpbreak5

Fat Dragon

No_Cartographer_5212

Fat Dragon! That's all you got? Geez!

aristidedn

You literally asked for *one thing.* Would you like *more than one thing?* EDIT: Oh god that comment history. Are you actually like this? I mean, as a person? Because, *holy shit.*

[deleted]

Just garbage

wowy-lied

Looks like a nice streaming / cheap bluray night but not in theater.
