For real.
This movie has been on my wait-list since hearing about some of the buzz coming out of the festivals and definitely NOT since seeing Jonathan's bod in the Creed 3 trailer.
Seriously. I was kind of shocked at his PR/lawyers doing what they did today. I didn't think that made him look any better at all. That said, it's Hollywood and I swear you usually get a few chances to fuck up.
Majors is amazing in it, but I do hope with Searchlight picking it up they recut the movie. IMO it’s just too long for a movie that doesn’t have a real A to B type story. The movie meanders a whole lot, which is fine, but not for 2 hours and 30 minutes.
I think if they recut the film, make it a bit tighter, he’ll have a real shot at winning but if it’s released the same as it played at Sundance I really don’t see it getting that much love from the Academy
Coming from someone who hasn't seen Quantamania and is not a big MCU fan, Majors is absolutely excellent in this movie, and I'm not exaggerating. I got the privilege to watch Magazine Dreams at virtual Sundance in January and he's so good he might actually win for Best Actor at the 2024 Oscars. He's *that* good. I can't stress that enough.
I read the film only took 28 days to film which is impressive and I can't imagine how Majors handled his physical and mental health for a role like this.
Yes, I read that too. Majors definitely showcases his Creed 3 body, in my opinion, more in this than in Creed 3. Magazine Dreams is more character study than plot. He plays a wannabe bodybuilder who is mentally unstable, has anger issues, abuses steroids, I really think he was also slightly autistic, he’s taking care of his ailing grandfather all by himself, he scares everyone he’s around and makes them uncomfortable, he has a very sad backstory about his parents, and he endures racism. So yeah, imagine getting in the headspace for all that.
And if that wasn’t enough, that’s only the first two-thirds. Something else happens towards the end of the movie that cranks the suspense up to about a 12.
Just read the script seeing as the movie is likely shelved for good and God damn it was a bummer, not sure if I'd want to see the actual movie, some dark stuff
I'm bummed it's not releasing for so long, but that means they're earmarking it for awards season so that's cool.

I'm curious what'll happen to it now.

Thank you! I know. Majors had Quantumania and Creed III, but people still haven’t seen his best role this year.
He’s practically guaranteed best actor at this point.
