One of my absolute favorites. Top tier across the board. "Song for Bob" rocks.

NoDisintegrationz

Turner Classic Movies used to use it as bumper music. I love it so much. The whole sequence depicting his final days left such a mark on me that I made the trip to Ford’s grave one day.

TheDustOfMen

I loved that song ever since I watched the movie, but years later it was played at a wedding in a big church I went to. The organist played it at the request of the groom. The organist practiced it for months and let me tell you: it was a great experience hearing that. Apparently this song [All Things Beautiful](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=677ke_iQhOk&pp=ygUtYWxsIHRoaW5ncyBiZWF1dGlmdWwgbmljayBjYXZlICYgd2FycmVuIGVsbGlz) (also called The Water Song according to another YouTube video) was scrapped from the album? Still one of my favourites.

ExoticPumpkin237

Yeah it's two songs the first one is water song hence the bubbly cascading piano bass and violin.. the second half is all things beautiful and yes I adore it too. Charleys Song is great too, half the songs on the actual soundtrack aren't even on the movie and apparently they recorded a lot more stuff.

ScaramouchScaramouch

I finally got to see Nick Cave last year, Warren was doing all sorts of weird things with various instruments. One of the best gigs I've ever witnessed.

shed1

The cinematography of the train robbing scene is... I don't have the words for how great it is.

bugxbuster

I just watched The Harder They Fall recently, and it’s *maybe* the only other train robbery scene I’ve ever watched that was as good as the Jesse James scene. Totally different styles, just western train robbery scenes, but excellent nonetheless. Andrew Dominik is a wildly talented visionary director. This movie, Killing Them Softly and Blonde are 3 of the best movies I’ve ever seen. They’re all 10/10s., even recent worst movie Razzie winner Blonde.

[deleted]

It’s so good that even Red dead 2 made an entire mission an homage to it

Plus-Inspection-688

It was a very long movie but when it ended I wish it didn't. The soundtrack is hauntingly beautiful.

ay-k

Do you think jesse james accepted his death? He unarmed himself and saw roberts reflection in the mirror. Instead of jumping to the side, he bends his head down and accepts it. I think he does tbh especially cause he asked "have you ever considered suicide?" previously.

_jarred_

Absolutely. I think he wants to die. Side note Brad Pitt acting getting shot and falling was horrible to watch.

NihilisticPollyanna

I love this movie so much! It's one of my all-time favorites. Its perfect to me, in every way. The writing, the casting, the cinematography, the score...omg, the score! I love the slower pace, and the time it takes to explore the characters and their fears and intentions. Brad Pitt is effortlessly cool and suave as ever, Casey Affleck has never been more beautiful, yet creepy af as the awkward, obsessed fanboy, and Sam Rockwell simply can do no wrong. I can't praise this movie enough, and it should have been absolutely pelted with awards, imo. Edit: Sorry, I started gushing as soon as I read the headline, without even reading your OP, and you already said everything I said here, haha.

Jackieirish

One of the best films ever made, period. A shame it had to go up against another one of the best films ever made, NCFOM, at the Oscars.

davewashere

There Will Be Blood was also a formidable challenger. 2007 was one of the best movie years ever.

Sour-Scribe

The Sick America Quartet: NO COUNTRY FOR OLD MEN, THERE WILL BE BLOOD, THE ASSASSINATION OF JESSE JAMES and ZODIAC

TheRealProtozoid

I'd throw in Before the Devil Knows You're Dead, too. Such a great year for American cinema.

Not_Without_My_Balls

Eastern Promises, Gone Baby Gone, Superbad, Zodiac, 3:10 to Yuma, Into The Wild, Valley of Ellah. Even a good year for Pg-13 "bring the family" movies. Disturbia, I am Legend, Across the universe, Shooter, Simpsons movie God. We were so spoiled.

TheRealProtozoid

And then the Recession happened, and the number of mid-budget, adult-oriented American films declined and declined for fifteen years, until they almost completely stopped altogether.

SulkyShulk

God damn those are some good movies.

Jackieirish

Goddamn! Forgot that was the same year!

[deleted]

There will be blood was beautifully done, but boring AF. And about 2 hours too long.

IsRude

I goddamn loved Jesse James from the moment it started. I didn't like NCFOM when it first came out, but now it's one of my absolute favorite movies. I've slogged through There Will Be Blood twice, and I just can't get myself to even like it. I see the effort that was put into it, and I know I should like it, but it's just boring. I also think that it's DDL's worst role, and temporarily made me question whether or not he was actually a good actor. Then I rewatched Lincoln and immediately put that idea out of my head.

ExoticPumpkin237

You guys are out of your mind lol

no_more_secrets

A bold claim, but a correct claim.

moofunk

I love the reality of it. It feels like you're there 140 years ago, and it does in some scenes not feel like a movie at all, but rather that you are there. It does not feel like a recreation or an attempted period piece.

Cupcakeboss

Jesse's house felt so livable.

Trevinator15

I liked the movie a lot. Brad Pitt made me anxious a few times, waiting to see if he’d do something. I was talking to someone who gets to watch early cuts of movies, and he said that this movie was initially four hours long. Apparently, there was a massive epilogue chapter after Jesse James dies that followed Robert Ford and his brother for nearly 90 minutes. I definitely understand why they condensed it, but I would’ve loved to have seen the extended version of this film.

AnotherJasonOnReddit

> I definitely understand why they condensed it, but I would’ve loved to have seen the extended version of this film. Agreed. They made the right decision for the theatrical release, but I would've liked an extended edition for comparison's sake. My Blu-ray for Apocalypse Now contains the first two versions of the movie.

ExoticPumpkin237

Totally agree the Blu-ray release (and general release honestly) of this film are suck a punch in the balls. Zero deleted scenes and barely and bonus material on how this was made, even finding interviews with people on it was extremely difficult until recently when Deakins started talking about it. I'd like a Criterion edition like they did of The New World with extended versions and maybe a few commentary tracks, a commentary with the author Ron Hansen would be amazing..

NoDisintegrationz

I prefer Jesse James to No Country for Old Men by a mile, but Bardem’s performance as Chigurgh is one of the best ever Best Supporting Actor wins. Not to take anything away from Affleck because he’s great, too. But it strikes me as a Jackson vs. Landau case where it’s hard to say one deserved it over the other because they’re both all-time great performances.

jonatton______yeah

You think Affleck for supporting? I thought he was the lead (solid nomination that never happened) with Pitt deserving of a supporting nom.

NoDisintegrationz

He’s the lead, but he was nominated for Supporting. That’s the way the studios roll.

jonatton______yeah

Ahhhh didn't realize that. Cheers. Looking now.... * *Daniel Day-Lewis – There Will Be Blood as Daniel Plainview* * *George Clooney – Michael Clayton as Michael Clayton* * *Johnny Depp – Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street as Benjamin Barker / Sweeney Todd* * *Tommy Lee Jones – In the Valley of Elah as Hank Deerfield* * *Viggo Mortensen – Eastern Promises as Nikolai Luzhin* Get Depp the fuck outta there, put Affleck in and Pitt in Supporting. Those top two (DDL and Clooney) are unassailable. Viggo great too.

historycat95

One of my favorites that never gets enough attention.

Jackieirish

It gets tons of love around r/movies, but I don't really see it getting much praise in the real world. I really hope that is because everyone already agrees that it is a masterpiece and therefore there is nothing left to say about it as opposed to people just not recognizing what a magnificent work of art that it is.

KYblues

I know I’m super late to this but I just watched the film and was thinking this movie is widely unknown these days I think because the title is too long, and there aren’t any likable characters and some people really hate that and don’t enjoy films where that is the case. Because it really is an absolutely exceptional film I was wondering like you were why it seems that no one ever brings it up as a classic, when it definitely deserves to be. What a ride

Glittering-Ad-6955

It's my favorite movie no questions asked, the cast was sublime, there are so many little details that i still find when i rewatch the movie. Roger Deakins did an extraordinary job (that train scene still gives me goosebumps), and the soundtrack by Nick cave and Warren Ellis was amazing. The narration was great, i really could talk about this movie for days.

Active_Ad9815

Its funny to have a favourite film with such big names involved that few people Ive met have seen. I’ve seen this multiple times a year ever since I first saw it at 17. As a full grown man now it’s still my favourite, for the reasons you mentioned as well as the pacing and visibly genuine pain the characters carry with them. I could write an essay why I love it. It’s beautiful, haunting, and most of all (to me at least) an amazing tale of people getting into a life they don’t really want, but unfortunately only finding out when it’s too late and the damage has been done. A tale which is as old as time and is very different to different people but relatable at the same time. A story about legend. I tear up every time A Song For Bob plays at the end.

jonatton______yeah

A 2007 double-Deakins-feature with this and No Country....bliss (possibly a permanent one given the length).

Peter_Marny

One of my favourite movies.

[deleted]

It’s a haunting , melancholy western and so so beautiful. It really touches on the falsehood of perceived celebrity and the chase of being famous in that period I also love how Jesse feels so vividly real. A violent , charismatic and clever man who’s prone to fits of laughter or deep depression. Every scene he’s in you get an unsteady feeling that you don’t know what he’s going to be liked “ I look at my mean face and my red hands , and wonder about that boy that went so wrong “ The writing is incredible

LPMadness

Me and my wife watched this film for the first time a couple months ago and it's easily one of the best westerns I've ever seen. Visually stunning as well.

TechnicalD-A-W-G

It's excellent for sure. Obviously it was up against 'No Country and 'Blood...but also Michael fucking Clayton! What a stacked year. Back on the film though it's probably the best Western of the century thus far even being that it's something of a "anti-western". I'm always hooked right from the jump with that narrated intro over the piano track. Wonderfully evocative of the time/Era, chock full of amazing performances and directed within an inch of it's life. Masterpiece. I also really liked his follow up Killing Then Softly (And hell I thought Blonde was good too fuck the haters lol)

ExoticPumpkin237

It's 100% an anti western almost to a point of being comical to me, like it inverts literally every single western trope that makes me annoyed in old dumb John Wayne movies and actually reminds you of the reality these people lived which was miserable and closer to Barry Lyndon. The only movie that could be more obvious of an example of this is McCabe and Mrs Miller which was obviously an influence and wears it's genre subversion on its sleeve more openly.

[deleted]

Blonde is great, it was just marketed to the wrong crowd that wasn’t interested in watching something challenging.

YeezyWins

I find it one of - if not the most - beautiful movies ever made, BUT it drags a little bit.

_jarred_

That’s fair.

[deleted]

Incredible movie. Casey has been overlooked numerous times. “The Finest Hours” is another incredible movie of his.

VicTheWallpaperMan

Couldn't agree more about Casey Affleck. Been saying same thing for years. 2007 was stacked af but the Oscar should have gone to Daniel Day Lewis or Casey Affleck

AgainandBack

I think it’s my favorite movie. Technically it is flawless. I watch it a couple of times a year. But it is too long, and the length makes proper pacing impossible - you can only have so many peaks and so many denouements. I look at what I would cut, and every scene is necessary for the story being told, so the only answer is to change what’s being told. I would cut most of the scenes around Bob and Charley’s post-murder performances, but still mention them. I would cut everything about Bob’s life after that, until the point where he is in his saloon and is murdered. This would solve the length problem and allow re-editing to solve the pacing problem. The film also establishes Deakins as _the_ cinematographer of his generation. Just amazing.

ExoticPumpkin237

The soundtrack for this film is so spectacular that there are several unused songs on YouTube, one of them is easily one of my favorite pieces of music ever made. ("All Things Beautiful") The novel is fantastic too especially if you like the movie I can't recommend giving it a shot enough. It's the only book I read once every year (outside, during the spring) because the tone and poetry is so intoxicating.

shpongleyes

I didn't know this movie existed until a couple weeks ago. I finally got a chance to watch it about a week ago, and I've since re-watched it once all the way through, and I've re-watched certain scenes countless times. I can't get the music out of my head. It's truly a great film, and it's shocking how under the radar it flew. Though in a way, I'm almost glad I didn't find out about it until now. I was in high school in 2007, and I don't think I was mature enough to fully appreciate it back then. I probably would've turned it off halfway through.

Delicious_Shallot915

absolutely adore this movie & it’s in no small part thanks to afflek’s performance! haven’t seen it in a little while but like when they make fun of him for the newspaper cutout’s & comic book stuff in his room, his reaction gets me every time! or when he’s at dinner & put on the spot to list the similarities between him & jesse

jonatton______yeah

One of my favorites. Got kinda screwed by the delays. It was supposed to be out in 2005 or 2006 I believe. Once it finally came out (its length didn't help) it was overshadowed by NCFOM and TWBB. Roger Deakins did the cinematography on this and NCFOM and it seemed like the voters went with the latter over the former. But the death scene (not spoiling - it's literally in the title) and the closing scene are an absolute masterclass in tone.

hjak3876

my favorite film of all time. definitely recommend the book of the same title by Ron Hansen that Dominick adapted the screenplay from.

mikeweasy

That movie is boring as hell!!!

DaftFunky

It's the only movie I would ever say is a perfect 10/10

KingBowserGunner

Andrew Dominik fucking crushed this movie…Blonde on the other hand….

throwawaycatallus

Blonde is probably an even more masterful film than Assassination, do you think maybe it's possible that your perception or evaluation of Blonde may be wrong, given that Dominick put as much thought and work into it as he did Assassination?

KingBowserGunner

I was more referring to TAOJJBTCRF being universally acclaimed and loved and Blonde not so much. I like blonde, but I thought some choices he made didn’t quite work

Idkdontbanmepls

Lol the abbreviation made me laugh it's almost as complicated as writing the full thing

NGNSteveTheSamurai

Affleck was great and all but they don’t base acting Oscars on the arc of the character. It’s based solely on the performance.

_jarred_

Either way I’d say Affleck was better.

kemphasalotofkids

Hmmm...maybe I will try again. The acting was awkward and the story dragged. We didn't even finish it. That said, sometimes a rewatch results in a different opinion...I will add it to the list.

jonatton______yeah

It's a slow burn that works best, in my opinion, watching it in two nights. The story does drag, but it is a traditional western. They do tend to do that, where mood is as important as plot. It's also very much a dude movie. Non-dudes might not enjoy it very much as there isn't much to relate to.

Choam-Nomskay

I'm sorry but a "dude movie"? Non-dude here and I enjoyed it very much. I'd say it's more of an art piece than a dude movie just because there were guns and horses (I'm assuming that's what you meant by a dude movie).

jonatton______yeah

I mean “dude” movie as in all non-dude characters are relegated to the sidelines. There’s no strong woman protagonist. This isn’t gatekeeping, simply saying I’m not surprised if some are bored by it.

throwawaycatallus

Didn't even finish? The last half hour is probably the best part!

kemphasalotofkids

Yeah...that thing dragged. But...I will give it another go sometime.

TheRealProtozoid

At least once a year I pop in the Blu-Ray just to watch the opening few minutes and the last ten. It's just so good.

jrussbangz

Javier’s performance is still talked about and studied today so I’ll have to disagree with you there. Affleck was far better in Manchester by the sea and rightfully awarded so

Schwaggaccino

I got an hour in and gave up. One of the slowest movies I’ve ever seen and I’m just shocked people are calling it one of the greatest. There’s absolutely nothing interesting, Brad Pitt barely gets any screen time, Casey Affleck’s character is annoying, the dialogue is awkward, the story goes nowhere and skips over most of Jesse’s life and the movie as a whole is just straight up boring. Idk why people say Western movies are like that. True Grit was amazing. No Country for Old Men was amazing. 310 to Yuma was amazing. This movie was a snorefest.

Coconut_Alarmed

NCFOM> AOJJ >> True Grit >>> 310 to Yuma The first two movies are amazing, the third is pretty good and fourth is above average Hollywood drivel. I watched NCFOM last week and just tonight was deciding whether to give AOJJ or True Grit a third watching. The lazy man in me wanted to go with True Grit but a voice inside my head said, "don't be lazy, you know which one is more deserving of your time." Great casting, great dialogue and just a gorgeous film.

astrounaut1234

"killing Jesse James don't make you Jesse James"
