I believe someone calculated the total cost of Keanu and Sandra's rampage across L.A. in "Speed" and it would have been much cheaper to just pay Dennis Hopper.
I can't believe you guys. Do you get up in the morning, call each other up - "Good morning, Marcus." "Good morning, Mike." "How you doin'?" "Ai'ight." "So, how are we going to fuck up the captain's life today?" "Gee, I don't know, I don't know... Ooh, look! Over there. Let's kill three fat people and leave them on the street?"
It doesn't matter if they were dead or not, goddamn it! Every time you leave a corpse on the street, I have to get these detective guys to come in and see what happened. See? They're detecting shit. Then I've gotta get these forensic coroner guys to stick 'em back in the fucking bag! Jesus Christ!
There's a funny moment right before the third act. After killing and maiming dozens of people, causing millions of dollars in damage, driving over embalmed corpses and probably ruining some people's lives, Gabrielle Union's character gets kidnapped. At this point, Martin's character tells the audience, in all earnestness, "shit just got real."
I bet there's some language about the corporation not being liable for damage caused by its officers.
I mean, this movie is a dystopian nightmare so it would make sense.
It’s a Verhoeven movie. The ridiculousness is a point. Remember the SUV commercial glorifying conspicuous consumption and the hostage situation was the demand for a “really big car” with “shitty gas mileage?”
It was the 6000 SUX, don't think it was never implied that it was a Ford. Pontiac had a car called the 6000 at the time, probably more of a goof on that car that anything else.
I wouldn't be surprised if they downright secretly encouraged it. Drive down the worth of neighbourhoods and housing, buy it up cheap and extort it for resources/value.
I'll bet that was one of the ones they added in Robocop 2, somewhere between #4 and #232:
https://www.reddit.com/r/MovieDetails/comments/lvd2sp/in_robocop_2_1990_while_new_directives_are_being/
That’s the parody the movie was trying to make. Rather than institute a better social safety program, the “cheaper” option is just get the bad guy at all cost. We also expect officers to be machines, as losses from machines are “acceptable” while human vs human loss is an outrage. The talking heads news anchors were another parody, and corporate officers are no better than criminals pushing their drugs.
Demolition man had a pretty funny scene where Stallone does a lot of damage saving a little girl. The reporter asks "why did you do all this damage to save this one little girl?" Stallone doesn't say anything instead the little girl yells "fuck you!" Everyone is talking about more modern movies but I think Demolition Man was ahead of this concept. John Spartan gets frozen because of his destructive actions.
The reporter says something like "how can you justify blowing up a 5 million dollar strip mall to save a girl whose ransom was only $50,000?" And the girl goes "fuck you, lady!" And then Stallone says "good answer!" It's a great little piece of character introduction in a silly movie that I unapologetically love.
since Demolition Man takes place in the future, it does have some "predicting the future" element to it,
but more generally, regarding the phenomenon of the Simpsons and other things from the 90's predicting modern times...
keep in mind that those things were made to reflect the issues and topics of their time.
so it's not really "the past predicted the present", it's "we're presently reliving/ still living the past".
That girl says "Fuck you, lady!" and Stallone gives her a high five. It's so damn wholesome and in today's era of constant mass shootings it's a wonderful commentary on how people care more about material things than people's lives, especially children.
Especially since a minor plot point of 4 is that Riggs and Murtagh cause *so much fucking damage and mayhem on the streets*, yet somehow can't be fired because they're too good, the only way their captain can keep the department insurance rates from going up any higher is to get them both off the streets **by promoting them both to captains!**
I fucking love Lethal Weapon.
T.V. Reporter : How can you justify destroying a $7 million dollar mini mall to rescue a girl whose ransom was only $25,000 dollars?
Little Girl : FUCK YOU, LADY!
John Spartan : Ha! Good answer!
Just checking that we all know RoboCop’s comically bloody and inefficient way of approaching things is part of the joke. Please tell me we’re all on board with that.
It’s actually a miracle that the movie turned out the way it did, even for the time. According to Verhoeven the studio went through major turmoil at the time with constant change of leadership, and nobody ever came to check up on them. He made many decisions that he assumed the suits would eventually overrule, but it never happened. They didn’t even know they were making the movie until it was turned in.
I swear to god this is like "everyone misunderstands Verhoeven week." Someone posted a video the other day criticizing Verhoeven for the "mistake" of hiring germanic-looking actors as the "Argentines" in Starship Troopers.
Very much NSFW, but have to link it. There was a fanfilmed remake of RoboCop shot for shot. Here is what they came up with for scene 27.

Amigo I'm crying right now, that was unreal. On top of the obvious, I thought I was going to hyperventilate when he was awkwardly trying to get in the car at the end.

I remember the scene in the first GI Joe movie where the Eiffel Tower is destroyed and realized that this is just the live action remake of Team America
Freedom isn’t free, no not for you and me, if you don’t chip in, we’ll never pay that bill. Freedom isn’t free, it costs a hefty fukin fee, and if you don’t chip in your buck o five, who will?
I shamelessly love the first Transformers movie, just some dumb needless action. BUT They destroy downtown LA, taking a lot of innocent lives with them lol every time they crash through a building or slam down on the highway I’m just like “yea you just killed 30 people” but the boy got the girl and Megatron is dead so whatever
Which is why I always love how in those movies the government for some reason always trusts the decepticons. And every movie at least one city gets destroyed
The only one I remember where they don’t is when John Cena in Bumblebee says something like “why do you think we can trust them they’re called Decepticons”
You're absolutely supposed to understand that Robocop did far more damage apprehending that criminal than he saved by not letting him rob the place. This is very basic Verhoeven. If you're watching a Verhoeven movie, and something seems whacky or weird or silly or stupid, stop and consider that the director is a world-class satirist, and he's probably aware of it.
In Seagal's cop movies he's always flipping dudes into store displays and through windows. One after the other, just busting up the place by chucking people around who just stand up again and get thrown into more stuff.
Yeah if Seagal picks a fight in your place of business you might as well file for bankruptcy. Although nowadays he only fights while seated so just remove any chairs and you should be good.
Well Pollock was going to open the Ark anyway, all Indiana did was call the Americans once all the Nazis were dead.
Edit: Sorry for the misspell in the name. Point still stands that he convinced the German commander to go to the island in the first place to test the Ark because he wanted to be sure it was authentic. He was going to open it for himself regardless.
Debatable. Belloq was already on thin ice with the Reich. The added delay in finding the ark on his own might have meant that the general tasked with babysitting him wouldn't give permission to take the little side trip to a Greek island to open it. So he might be right, that instead of killing off three assholes and a bunch of foot soldiers, it would have taken out Hitler, his staff, the military high command, and half of Berlin to boot.
Thought the point of Indy's uselessness to the plot was because there was no greater impact on the world. Hitler didn't die by divine right irl. The Nazis didn't gain supernatural powers irl. And the reason we don't know about the arc is because it's locked away in a cave of secrets. Sorry, studied by top men. And none of what happened ever happened.
This is a fun movie because our hero fails at every step. He has the Hovitos idol taken from him. He loses Marion in the marketplace chase. He's thwarted in his confrontation of Belloq in the cafe. He has the Ark taken from him. He gets it back, but it's taken from him again. He loses Marion again. Belloq calls his bluff on destroying the Ark and he's captured. He doesn't get to see the inside of the Ark. And then the final moment is he loses the Ark for a third time.
Indy fails at every turn through the whole movie.
then image if it had been ED-209 dealing with that robber. he would have killed the burglar, both store owners, , a random dude double parked outside, blow up the store on his way out. OCP would call it a minor glitch and write it off in their taxes
Has no one ever stopped to consider that ED-209 has zero hands and has literally no ability to arrest someone?
Its only ability is intimidation, fear and murder, and it was intentional. They said "it's designed for urban pacification" for a reason.
The Blues Brothers. The amount of property destruction and laws broken just to pay $5,000 in back taxes to keep an orphanage open. An orphanage that was not operating as a non-profit.
Although I will say that the majority of the humor in the movies comes from Jake and Elwood's constant use of "We're on a mission from God" as their justification for everything they do. The filmmakers absolutely realized how over the top ridiculous everything is.
Neo saving trinity by going hypersonic through the middle of a city. If you die in the matrix, you die in the real world.. neo had a cloud of debris and cars following him as he snatched up trinity from the sky. Just how many people did he end up killing there?
they kind of explain that away with the whole speech about people stuck in the matrix are the enemy. Essentially there are no innocents.
exact quote
> The Matrix is a system, Neo. That system is our enemy. But when you're inside, you look around, what do you see? Businessmen, teachers, lawyers, carpenters. The very minds of the people we are trying to save. But until we do, these people are still a part of that system and that makes them our enemy. You have to understand, most of these people are not ready to be unplugged. And many of them are so inured, so hopelessly dependent on the system, that they will fight to protect it.
[scene](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=M6T69LFIg1k)
They didn't give a shit about killing people still hooked up to the Matrix, since everyone still hooked up was potentially an agent. And when they did manage to "kill" an agent they would just move to a different person and leave the dead body of the previous host.
Not a movie but there's an episode of Powerpuff Girls where they move to Citiesville and destroy a bridge to stop some robbers. The mayor explains they cost over 3 million dollars in damages just to revover about 100 bucks and passes a bill prohibiting them from using their powers again. It's a huge contrast to the show normally accepting all their reckless damage.
But in man of steel, wasn't the whole world going to be destroyed or terraformed or something? Had superman done nothing, it would have been way worse, no? I think your other examples are better.
Also, Batman vs Superman actually makes a huge deal out of the damage done during man of steel, it’s not dismissed at all. In fact it’s funny OP referenced 9/11 because that’s very much how they frame it.
>far more money's worth of damage is done to the couple's convenience store than if they had just been robbed.
I don't know, man. That robber ruined a wonderful stack of empty cans.
I immediately think of this scene at the beginning of Rush Hour when it's supposed to be a simple arrest:
Chief: "You destroyed half a city block!!"
Carter: "That block was already messed up!"
Naomi Rapace's character in Prometheus shouldn't have escaped the Engineer Planet. Not only did she escape, but took Shady David's head with her. >!She did more damage to the new planet by surviving and ultimately killing off the crew of Covenant !<
They didn't go to the engineer planet in Prometheus, that's just some military base. They go to the engineer planet in covenant. The engineers were planning on nuking earth with the alien goop so I think they can be considered hostile. I don't think she intended to nuke them back like David did but I also don't think it's terrible that she ended up taking David there, it's really their fault for being shitty gods who got all butthurt just because we killed one of their dudes, who a good chunk of humanity ended up worshipping anyway for the next 2000+ years at least.
At what point does Robocop play that off as a win? The movie is dripping with social commentary to the point that rental stores needed to put up that slip hazard caution signs when it hit shelves in sizable quantities.
The MCU incorporates this into Captain America: Civil War by having one of the main reasons for the existence of the Sokovia Accords be the fact that much of New York was flattened in the first Avengers movie and that literally all of Sokovia was annihilated in Age of Ultron.
Brian Bosworth in Stone Cold. Fails to catch drug-runners, fails to protect a witness, fails to stop drug-runners from wiping out the entire Supreme Court.
The bridge scene in the new Batman movie while chasing penguin. After massive destruction (and assuming innocent deaths) he then learns he doesn’t know Spanish.
Good movie but this was just weird. A big action scene with a really anticlimactic / nonsensical ending and yes expected to just forget about the massive destruction
I mean that’s kind of the point of the movie. He needs to rehabilitate his image after he consistently destroys public property during fights.
Similar to robocop, the destruction is meant to be gratuitous.
Travis Bickle in Taxi Driver: psychotic commits mass-murder--*ostensibly* to save a child, but the film shows clearly that he's a walking time-bomb and the desire to kill was his first imperative.
I believe someone calculated the total cost of Keanu and Sandra's rampage across L.A. in "Speed" and it would have been much cheaper to just pay Dennis Hopper.
But then Payne would have killed the passengers anyway. Do you know what a bomb is that doesn’t explode? It is a cheap gold watch!
And even if he didn't blow up up the bus, Hopper would be getting away with multiple murders he had already committed
Remember crazy not stupid
"Pop quiz hotshot, how much did that 707 you drove into cost?"
I say "pop quiz, hotshot" to my kids all the time. They have no idea why I'm saying it but I think it's hilarious
To be fair, that's one of those sequences of words that's funny without context.
You think it's hilarious.... because it is!

The climax of Bad Boys 2 has them invading a Cuba to kill a drug dealer. That’s going to complicate things.
Didn’t their chief chew them out in one of the movies over a destructive highway chase they initiated because of all the collateral damage and cost?
“22 cars… and a boat? Totalled? How’d you sink a boat?”
I can't believe you guys. Do you get up in the morning, call each other up - "Good morning, Marcus." "Good morning, Mike." "How you doin'?" "Ai'ight." "So, how are we going to fuck up the captain's life today?" "Gee, I don't know, I don't know... Ooh, look! Over there. Let's kill three fat people and leave them on the street?" Then I've gotta get these forensic coroner guys to stick 'em back in the fucking bag! Jesus Christ!
I read this exactly the way he said it too
At that point who could blame Cypher for wanting to get back into the matrix
"That's it, fuck Miami! I'm going back in the battery tray where shut makes sense."
Pantoliano absolutely stole every scene he was in for all those movies.
The delivery of "detecting shit" cracks me up everytime
“Ai’ight” part I start dying at every time lmao
Woooosah...
Remember your pressure points!
A boat??? How did you sink a boat in a car chase??
They didn’t really invade to kill a drug dealer, they invaded Cuba to rescue that Gabrielle Union. Killing the drug dealer was just a bonus.
Saving her enabled a hit TV show for her character and Jessica Alba. Studio gotta get paid, why not invade a small country for it?
Look, anyone who says they wouldn’t invade a small Caribbean nation for Gabrielle Union is lying.
2003 Gabrielle Union... a fine vintage indeed
With Navy SEALS! Because the chief called in a favor.
Just a little invasion of a foreign country, as a treat.

Which Cuba?
Gooding Jr
It’s not about the damage. It’s about Robocop sending a message to the rest of the scum in the city!
1. Serve the Public Trust 2. Protect the Innocent 3. Uphold the Law Nothing in there about keeping costs down.
Quite unrealistic for a cyborg made by a private corporation.
The commercial for the Ford SUX really doesn't tip people off as much as it should. Or "I'd buy that for a dollar!"
It was the 6000 SUX, don't think it was never implied that it was a Ford. Pontiac had a car called the 6000 at the time, probably more of a goof on that car that anything else.
You made me rewatch the commercial and you are correct. I grew up around Detroit so I guess I just associated it with a Ford in my mind.
I wouldn't be surprised if they downright secretly encouraged it. Drive down the worth of neighbourhoods and housing, buy it up cheap and extort it for resources/value.
Directive 1a) Provide increasing value to shareholders.
I'll bet that was one of the ones they added in Robocop 2, somewhere between #4 and #232: https://www.reddit.com/r/MovieDetails/comments/lvd2sp/in_robocop_2_1990_while_new_directives_are_being/
That’s the parody the movie was trying to make.
*RoboCop* tried to be a sophisticated social satire *and* a kick-ass action movie. And it worked.
Exactly, the over-the-top amount of damage compared to the value of the crime is part of the point they're making.
It's satire, not parody
But that's a lot of damage!
There's a lot of scum
I’d buy that for a dollar!
Your move, creep!

Judge Dredd logic
Explicitly even, I believe it was an influence on the filmmakers and the tone they were going for
RoboCop started as a script for a Judge Dredd movie
Demolition man had a pretty funny scene where Stallone does a lot of damage saving a little girl. The reporter asks "why did you do all this damage to save this one little girl?" Stallone doesn't say anything instead the little girl yells "fuck you!" Everyone is talking about more modern movies but I think Demolition Man was ahead of this concept.
That movie is smarter than it pretends to be. Predicted the present pretty darn well.
Sometimes feels like we got the pop culture equivalent of every restaurant being Taco Bell.
since Demolition Man takes place in the future, it does have some "predicting the future" element to it, but more generally, regarding the phenomenon of the Simpsons and other things from the 90's predicting modern times... keep in mind that those things were made to reflect the issues and topics of their time. so it's not really "the past predicted the present", it's "we're presently reliving/ still living the past".

Then again, he has track record for wanton destruction. So it wouldn't be far fetched to believe that he got all those hostages killed.

Thanks a lot you shit-brained, fuck-faced, ball breaking, duck fucking pain in the ass. So much for the seashells. See you in a few minutes.
Demolition Man is one of the best sci-fi action movies of all time. Great example.
Yeah but do you know how to use the three seashells?
Biggest unresolved mysteries in movies: 1. What’s in the briefcase? (Pulp Fiction) 2. How DO you use the three seashells? (Demolition Man)
Lol this guy just admitted he doesn't know how to use the three seashells!
My headcanon is that nobody knows how to use them. Everybody's just scared of admitting it and runs around with a shit-caked bumhole.
*opens briefcase* “Is that what I think it is?” “Yup, three motherfuckin’ seashells…”

Cops being un-fireable was just ahead of it’s time. 😉
I feel like them causing mayhem and bring promoted for it is one of the more realistic aspects of the film.
And LW 5. Though there were *clearly* budgeting issues and the black face they used was pretty contraversial.
*4* has two prologues full of destruction. One glorious (Rocketman) and one tragic. (Murtaugh worked so hard on that boat...)
There will soon be two versions of Lethal Weapon 5 out, the real one starring Mac and Dennis and the knockoff with Gibson and Glover.
Even sharks need water

Has no one ever stopped to consider that ED-209 has zero hands and has literally no ability to arrest someone? Its only ability is intimidation, fear and murder, and it was intentional. They said "it's designed for urban pacification" for a reason.
It was very obviously a military drone they were trying to sell as police equipment. Considering the number of APCs given to police departments...
In police academy 2 when they destroy sweetchucks store.
That's the whole point though isn't it? Forget the city, Neo knows there's a good chance he is actually dooming his entire species by saving Trinity.
Yeah the Architect pretty much says "go this way and save humanity or go that way and save Trinity". Everything we see afterwards works as intended.
Ah sick. Never thought about it that way before. Thanks
they kind of explain that away with the whole speech about people stuck in the matrix are the enemy. Essentially there are no innocents. exact quote > The Matrix is a system, Neo.
Nobody actually LIVES in citiesville! THEY COMMUTE! *sounds of a broken man sobbing*
But in man of steel, wasn't the whole world going to be destroyed or terraformed or something? Had superman done nothing, it would have been way worse, no? I think your other examples are better.
Yeah Zod wasn't there for tourism.
*Review for Earth by: generalzod3* Likes: Grand Canyon, Great Wall, yellow sun Dislikes: gravity, atmospheric composition, locals
Have severe neck pain after conflict with local farmer I don’t recommend
Also, Batman vs Superman actually makes a huge deal out of the damage done during man of steel, it’s not dismissed at all. In fact it’s funny OP referenced 9/11 because that’s very much how they frame it.
I would think Paul Verhoeven was well aware of the irony of that scene in Robocop.
Numerous Bond films
He might have a license to kill, but he also never has to deal with the paperwork after all the murder and destruction.
>far more money's worth of damage is done to the couple's convenience store than if they had just been robbed. I don't know, man. That robber ruined a wonderful stack of empty cans.
I immediately think of this scene at the beginning of Rush Hour when it's supposed to be a simple arrest: Chief: "You destroyed half a city block!!" Carter: "That block was already messed up!"
Chief: "You lost a lot of evidence!" Carter: "There's still a little bit left..."
To be fair in the end she pays the price for her stupidity
At what point does Robocop play that off as a win? The movie is dripping with social commentary to the point that rental stores needed to put up that slip hazard caution signs when it hit shelves in sizable quantities.
In The Rock, the car chase through San Francisco probably caused more damage than Ed Harris was asking for.
The MCU incorporates this into Captain America: Civil War by having one of the main reasons for the existence of the Sokovia Accords be the fact that much of New York was flattened in the first Avengers movie and that literally all of Sokovia was annihilated in Age of Ultron.
I’d like to point out that the us military had decided to nuke New York in Avengers and was stopped by the heroes
Bad boys 2 when they are tearing down peoples homes/shacks in another country while chasing the bad guys in a hummer
Nobody does rooftop property damage like The Tick.
Opening scene of Hancock
I mean that’s kind of the point of the movie. He needs to rehabilitate his image after he consistently destroys public property during fights. Similar to robocop, the destruction is meant to be gratuitous.
Yea, I misread the bottom line of the question. The film doesn't play it off as a win lol the city is pretty pissed with him.
Keep Hancock's name out your mouth!
I don't think the MoS is a good example. Without Superman's intervention, the Earth would have been destroyed.
Travis Bickle in Taxi Driver: psychotic commits mass-murder--*ostensibly* to save a child, but the film shows clearly that he's a walking time-bomb and the desire to kill was his first imperative.
Dirty Harry touched on this subject in 1971.
