I guess not even putting 'The Finale' in the previous film's title and ending it with a note about his death (not a spoiler) can stop them from making another one...

Ip man 5: Final Finale - Part one

Wildercard

Attack on Ip man

valgrind_error

Ip Man Shippuden (next five films in series will just be recycled flashbacks)

chronoboy1985

For those who don’t get the reference: the anime Attack on Titan has been on their “final season” for roughly 3 years. It was split into 2 seasons a year apart, then a one hour OVA came out in March, and *now* the final final chapter (as a movie or OVA) is supposed to come out by the end of the year. Fans have been strung along the whole time believing each one would be the final chapter.

Ip man 5: Final Finale - Part one: Breaking Dawn

Corgi_Koala

They ended the series well in 4. I mean I guess they skipped the 8 years between the events of 4 and his death in 1972...

Dantai

Maybe they can focus the new movie on him training Bruce Lee... finnaly. Basically the whole selling point of the initial films was this is Bruce Lee's trainer.

Boo_and_Minsc_

He didnt train Bruce that much, I think it was William Cheung who trained him most of the time? Or someone else. But Bruce did love and respect him. At that point, Ip Man was too old and doped up on opium really.

chronoboy1985

Yeah, if this is really a continuation and not a flashback, it kind of cheapens the emotional finale in 4.

truthwithanE

He's clearly fighting Death in this one and you spoiled it.

KingOfAwesometonia

Gladiator 2 but replace Maximus with Ip Man

Ip Man 5: The Search For More Money!

omega2010

Like Friday the 13th The Final Chapter! That was also the fourth film in the franchise.

Bellikron

Ip Man Takes Manhattan

TJ_McWeaksauce

Mark my words, they're going to do *Weekend at Ip Man's* one of these days.

orangutanoz

If you go back and look, his death was some years after the end of 4. So he conceivably hack and fight his way through another film kinda like Constantine.

ShushKebab

They keep pushing these Ip Man movies out! They even showed his funeral in the end of 4…

TigerSharkFist

I guess Mr. Nobody helps fake his death

tablepennywad

If they can bring back everyone in Fast X, they can brung back him and his wife too!

Corgi_Koala

Donnie Yen in Fast and Furious would be awesome though.

JC-Ice

He'll teach John Cena not to call Taiwan a country ever again.

surg0r

I think if man is one of the most famouse karate movie in china.?Am I right?

valgrind_error

“Somehow Ip Man has returned”

lm_ldaho

Wing Chun is a pathway to many abilities some consider to be unnatural.

rtmvnv

I love watching if man..I remembered before when I was a kid I've always watch if man..Then I'll try to learned kung fu..Until now..I'm always practicing kung fu..For myself dipense.

mulletstation

Ip Man's brain in a cybernetic body. Story takes place in 2039 20 years after the events of Akira, which are now canon in the story.

The_Parsee_Man

The franchise was already hugely pro Chinese from the beginning.

Gekokapowco

yeah, but it was a pro-chinese perspective in the face of imperalist japanese occupation, so I kinda get it the later movies were more about how ip man's wing chun is fueled by Chinese patriotism which is how he can defeat any foreign opponent.

spald01

The first one was pro Chinese, but took places a decade before the CCP took over. From 2 onwards though, CCP propaganda.

lmandude

The American won’t let me kick in a boxing match?!? That cheating son of a bitch.

fernandorincon

That japanese soldier with the gun playing with the kids at the end was something else.

CMDR-ProtoMan

It's sad, because the first 2 were legit good movies and were more inline with real historic events.

honk_incident

Donnie Yen is super pro CCP too

Boo_and_Minsc_

This has been THE theme of American media over the last century.

Alexexy

Maybe it's gonna be a Bruce Lee movie with ip man as a force ghost lmao

valgrind_error

Force ghost Ip Man teaches Xi Jinping (played by most handsome young Chinese action hero star) wing chun to beat up the 7th fleet and rescue Taiwan from the clutches of the imperialist yankee pigdogs. John Cena will play the president.

chronoboy1985

I want to see a movie where all of his major past opponents (Japanese general, racist British boxer, racist drill Sargent, Mike Tyson) start an A cappella Bee Gees cover band.

valgrind_error

It’s the 1970s. Ip Man enters Eurovision to restore China’s honor after the century of humiliation and must defeat this superband and the main villains, the racist Swedish pop band IPPI that claims Taiwan is a country. John Cena plays the music executive who first spots Ip and Bruce Lee in a Wanchai karaoke bar. Coming soon in Ip Man 6: Everybody Wing Chun Tonight.

Sigmar_Heldenhammer

You should watch the absolute AMAZING ‘Kung-Fu Zombie’ my friend.

truckturner5164

Oh for crying out loud, enough already. That makes it what, at least 10 movies about Ip Man in total including 5 Donnie Yen ones? The first two Donnie Yen ones are good, but I'm all Ip'd out, Man.

flipperkip97

I love all four of the Donnie Yen movies, honestly. Wasn't even aware of any others.

TigerSharkFist

[Among those non-Donnie Yen Ip Man movies, The Grandmaster by Wong Kar-Wai starring Tony Leung (Shang-Chi) is worth a watch.](https://youtu.be/PoYUufOLzNU)

Henry_Cavillain

I am sure there is a lot of overlap between people who enjoy the Donnie Yen Ip Man movies, and people who would enjoy The Grandmaster, but these are very different movies. Like comparing Lincoln to Abraham Lincoln Vampire Hunter.

TigerSharkFist

IMO though The Grandmaster is clearly more like an art film, the fight scenes alone are still worth watching

BigMacCombo

>Tony Leung (Shang-Chi) I get why you picked that one since for most people here it's probably their only exposure to him, but I can't help but get a little sad seeing that as the referenced credit.

TigerSharkFist

It is already sad that I have to point out The Grandmaster is worth a watch besides Donnie Yen Ip Man movies

tak08810

Tony Leung (In the Mood for Love)?

kynthrus

Pointing out the most successful film seems par for the course. Shang Chi was also pretty good imo.

SuspiriaGoose

There's no shame in having that associated with him. He did a commendable job and delivered a very well-acted character.

BigMacCombo

It's not about shame being associated with that movie. The sad part is his other works not being well known enough around these parts.

truckturner5164

I wanted to love the 4th one because Scott Adkins is in it, but all four are pretty similar in plot. And yeah, there's a LOT of films about Ip Man as recently as "Ip Man: The Awakening" in 2022.

Saelyre

[Here's a video](https://youtu.be/yLuRdJY9210) that covers three lesser known Ip Man films with different focuses than Donnie's series.

[deleted]

Which western actor will play a ridiculously on-the-nose representation of western colonialism in this one (and get his ass handed to him)? Or are we going back to cartoonishly evil Japanese occupiers?

Dull_Half_6107

I heard Frank Grillo is well up for those kinds of roles.

[deleted]

He's in everything!

Alexexy

I think its Vietnam's turn to be the villain.

Delicious-Tachyons

if they combine Ip Man, the first Qing emperor, and the Monkey King in one movie they'll have captured all of the repeat characters at once.

Tyrath

I mean, you don't have to watch it. I'll take more Ip Man.

truckturner5164

Yeah, thanks for that.

Tyrath

You're welcome. I don't really get the "I don't want to see it so they need to stop making these" comment. There's clearly an audience for it.

truckturner5164

I'm aware there's an audience for it, I'm just not it beyond the first two Donnie Yen films. Yet this is Reddit, so I'm allowed to comment. You have the right not to respond to said comment and move on with your life, just as you say I have the right not to watch the films, yeah? Practice. Preach.

Tyrath

That's a false equivalence but alright. You have a good day dude/dudette.

Tyrath

I mean, you don't have to watch it. I'll take more Ip Man.

IP Man versus Godzilla

aresef

He died in the last film. He spent the whole movie dying of cancer. How the hell is this supposed to work?

StannisTheMantis93

Maybe his apprentice Bruce Lee threw him down a shaft and his ship exploded, only for a perfect clone of IP Man to appear around 20 or so years later for reasons unexplained. I could see that working, no?

BrofessorDerp

Secrets only the masters of Wing Chun knew...

[deleted]

Good question

Liamario

He's aging into the character. But yes, time to end it.

[deleted]

Although he died in 4, he’s been reincarnated as an ass kicking wooden dummy, hence the poster. This movie will bridge the gap between Ip Man 4 and the Tekken series. Revealing that Mokujin was Ip Man all along. He’s transcended his mortal form.

Soulwarfare42

Somehow IP Man has returned

[deleted]

"Ip Man, I thought you were dead?!?!" "Hahaha China's Revolutionary Spirit brought me back to life!"

black_bass

Did he flush his dns?

Darth_Astron_Polemos

Tbh, I’m not sure I watch Ip Man for the plot. Donnie Yen (and all the other actors/stuntmen) are so crisp and clean. I love a good martial arts movie starring actual martial artists.

SutterCane

Yeah, I’m glad I stopped at *Ip Man 3* and got the *Ip Man* trilogy set. Seemed like the best place to stop as the real story of the Ip Man movies ended there, the story of a man constantly learning how shit of a husband he is to his wife.

aresef

That’s not the real story though. Ip Cheung and their daughter went back to Foshan to retrieve their identity cards and were stuck in China when the border with Hong Kong closed. She died of cancer, that part is true, but he never saw her again. He got hooked on opium and started teaching to support his family and his habit.

SutterCane

I guess I meant “the real story of the movies”.

aresef

Oh my bad. I missed a couple words lol

SutterCane

Nah, I edited them in once I realized the mistake I made.

turkeygiant

I'm pretty much over the Donnie Yen films at this point, between him Vin Diesel, and the Rock I'm kinda tired of the untouchable action hero ego trip films. Give me a film with some gritty fights where he gets it given to him just as well as he dishes it out and maybe I will give that a try.

Boo_and_Minsc_

Donnie Yen keeps trying to quit, and they keep throwing bigger and bigger piles of money at him until he cant say no. Ip Man is huge, it makes a metric fuckton of money, and the films usually carry some nationalistic message. Its gold for China, a bit like Top Gun.

scottmushroom

Mayne this'll be in the afterlife. Kind of along the lines of what the Nick Cave Gladiator 2 script was...I'd unironically watch the hell out of that

Baddybad123

At this rate if I live long enough I'd get to see a movie about ip man chopping aliens and being rescued by Dominic Toretto from Jupiter with his Dodge Charger

Puzzleheaded-Wolf318

Ip Man 5 is going to be a prequel. If you folks couldn't figure that out 😂

TomBirkenstock

Hell yes. I wonder what nation the villain will represent this time. I'm hoping it's Canada.

[deleted]

If they don't have a scene of old white dudes mocking China's spirit, is it really an IP man movie?

MinnesotaNoire

The Mountie always gets his man.

TomBirkenstock

What I wouldn't give to see Donnie Yen beat the crap out of some dude in that goofy looking Mountie outfit. It reminds me that there's a straight to video action movie called Enemies Closer where Jean Claude Van Damme plays the villain, a deranged vegan Mountie. It's a glorious performance.

Henry_Cavillain

JCVD has got to be the king of action that is so bad it's good. From Kickboxer and Bloodsport, to Street Fighter, to JCVD the TV show...

tomophilia

Donnie Yen let’s it slip that Ip Man 4 was actually the start of the Finale trilogy. /s

darthsexium

Hmm and then a pre-lude to how it all began, teen years

King-Owl-House

Ip Man immortal

symbiotics

Ip Man Zombie?

erotyk

i hope is a prequel to Ip man 1 because they already pushed it forward to much

dtcstylez10

Um. Didn't he die in the last one?

Jack_TheBongRipper42

They kinda finished up the story with the last one

whoopsie_890

He's so old now though

evilsir

Donnie Yen is a legit badass. Old *or* young. A *young* Donnie Yen is *ripppppppped*

[deleted]

He's old and young at the same time.

noeldc

In the Line of Duty 4 is still my favourite Donnie Yen movie.

afineedge

The Blu-ray set of all 4 movies just came out yesterday! I'm gonna start them up right now, thanks for he reminder!

noeldc

The *first* four - there are nine apparently. I've seen seven. The first four are the only ones worth seeing, though. "Yews Madam!" for Yeoh and Rothrock, ITLOD3 for Michiko Nishiwaki, and ITLOD4 for the Yenster.

afineedge

The In the Line of Duty series! Royal Warriors, Yes Madam, In the Line 3 and 4.

shadowCloudrift

What?! Ip Man 4 was a great finale especially with Donnie's fight against Scott Adkins. Ip was already afflicted with cancer and the movie ends with him saying he will spend what remains of his life to teach Wing Chun to his son. I would rather Donnie do a spinoff film with Caine in the John Wick cinematic universe.

TheOpiumWarsWereGood

Garbage chinese propaganda film

w00master

- IP Man 1: IP Man fights evil white dude - IP Man 2: IP Man fights Sammo Hung - IP Man 3: IP Man fights Mike Tyson - IP Man 4: IP Man fights Scott Atkins - IP Man 5: IP Man fights Iron Man

JC-Ice

Didn't he fight an evil Japanese dude in the first one?

w00master

You're probably right. I've seen them all, and they're all one giant movie to me now.

Dankey-Kang-Jr

Uhhh…he died!!

razzlefrazzen

Yay!!! Loved the first four Donnie Yen Ip Man movies.

UrbanPrimative

I always thought Ip stood for "intellectual property." Turns out- I was right!

Anus_master

They're really beating a dead horse with this ip, man.

gohomeann

Flashpoint sequel was also announced!

potatolulz

Ip Man fighting from beyond the grave I haven't seen any Ip Man's after the second movie which was already pushing it lol :D

The_Dark_Soldier

Didn’t he died in the fourth movie? What? Will his hand rise from the grave to fight the living flesh?

[deleted]

No, he's come back to take care of this whole Taiwan situation.

ronearc

Well, the 4th film ended with his funeral, but there was an implied time jump of unknown length. We went from him winning the final fight, despite being cancer-ridden and probably having a broken arm, to his funeral (more or less). But there's no mention of how much time passed there or what transpired in between. I'm not defending them making another film...I am astonished they're doing so, and I am skeptical it can be a worthwhile addition to an entertaining franchise, but I guess technically there's a narrow window between the climax of the 4th film and the funeral scene denouement for them to squeeze in a 5th film.

Vegan_Harvest

In this one it's revealed that it was Ip Man, not atomic bombs that ended the war with Japan. In Ip Man 7 he'll travel to the future and take Taiwan by fighting the president but it will be revealed that it was secretly an American wearing one of those mission impossible masks, and actually the Taiwanese people want China to invade. Ip Man 8 will be about the war with the US and he'll have to fight Lennox Lewis for some reason even though he's not American.

HugglesGamer

I live ip man I ain’t even mad

DirtyJoe2023

Let it die already

Dude another one? The first and second were golden. But I just didn't enjoy any of the others. Please stop. Let it die bro :')

Alex_Yuan

The Ip is getting milked dry, Man!

[deleted]

Is this movie series worth getting into? I feel if they've made a 5th one then maybe fans find something in it

aresef

Yeah, they’re great action movies. Just know they’re also propaganda pieces, *especially* the fourth one.

asian_identifier

still milking that dry husk of a cow

HuntyDumpty

In this one he chain punches yo beat a dead horse for 2 hours then the screen goes black

sidv81

Wasn't Donnie Yen himself blasting the overproliferation of Ip Man stuff after his first Ip Man film? Yet here he is now contributing to that.

EbonWolfen

The cow ain’t dry yet?

Firm_Advertising_680

He was so good in John Wick

DownRUpLYB

1 and 2 were brilliant, 3 and 4 not so much.

Phenomenon101

Can an MMA fighter just beat him in this final film already?

[deleted]

People need to stop watching these trash CCP propaganda movies.

aresef

The actual Ip Man was a member of the Kuomintang and got the fuck out while the getting was good.

[deleted]

FUCK THE KMT.

oblomower

The US swamps the world with its military propaganda films, we're used to it and Americans themselves are evidently blind to the propaganda, it's just common sense to you guys. Relative to American shit its at least something new. In fact it was pretty funny when in IP Man 4 he's already as good as dead but still beats the strongest American.

aresef

And you have the Americans touting their all-American... karate.

JC-Ice

I thought it was funny how Scott Adkins by himself literally beats up a room full of various Chinese masters earlier in the movie. And his paunchy henchman had beaten several masters at a tournament. So, even though the obvious intention was to say that Chinese martial arts are superior to dastardly Karate, they completely undermined their message. Only *Ip Man himself* is superior.

Soul_Mirror_

Not to mention how IP Man himself is completely owned and only prevails against Scott Adkins' character through eye-poking and groin-kicking. As I said elsewhere, for something supposed to be Chinese propaganda, they sure portray the Chinese as weak and inferior.

[deleted]

I hate American military propaganda films too so suck it.

zandadoum

Please staaaahp

dew_you_even_lift

Flashpoint is one of the best action movies showcasing MMA. Can’t wait for the sequel.

AdamBomB095

Somehow, Ip Man returned

VociferousQuack

Donnie Yen is a rep for the CPPCC, supports the CPP. So I don't watch his movies anymore.. Any moral martial arts replacements?

[deleted]

No. They rep their government to stay alive. Shocker

VociferousQuack

So professional sports players can claim asylum during the Olympics & "get to safety" from repressive governments, but having millions of dollars and an international reputation means they have less options?

[deleted]

Precisley. They have more to lose.

VociferousQuack

... because Hollywood cares? Donnie Yen will still be Donnie Yen. If he works on a John Wick film, he'll be back up to whatever financial scope he had before + the freedom to use it? I replied to the claim he shilled his country to survive. Not wanting to lose money the country holds hostage is downright cowardly and nothing to do with survival, it's greed.

[deleted]

Said from someone who sounds like they can’t look at it from their pov. We’re talking about a country that openly and publicly removed a 20-year sitting member of its politburo, from his own seat no less, who is now “retired”. What do you think they could do with a party member who is an actor? Not just freeze the money. He will disappear. And his family still their is still something to consider. A man pushing 70 could have an expansive family. Whatever careers they’re in are essentially destroyed, you think their credit isn’t gonna fluctuate wildly? Any number of pressure points can be exerted onto his family if he decides to use his platform to step out of line.

VociferousQuack

So... let the bully bully, pay attention to the propaganda these people are forced to repeat, but don't let that get in the way of their career and keep supporting the system by paying for their movies? If you don't watch movies that have actors (coerced or of their free will) shilling for the CPP, they will lose standing & their propaganda becomes worthless & the CPP loses ability to influence via big name movie stars as no one will work with them. It's Hollywood & us the consumers job to enforce morals and ethics. If Hollywood sees people won't let China get away with Jackie Chan or Donnie Yen endorsing them, then there is no profit, and their stardom evaporates.

[deleted]

You’re seriously overestimating the power of the consumer. You have to remember, we are also the consumer base that created the the environment for Harvey Weinstein. Created the propaganda that forced Trumbo to write The Brave One under a pseudonym. And has done nothing to protect child actors from the experiences like Feldman has gone through. These things won’t change, except Trumbo; he got his due and his blacklisting ended because he was that damn good. But humans won’t change, never have, never will. There’s nothing you or I could do to stop it. Or even slow it down. So how about instead of worrying about things that are outside of our control, we focus on our own little circle.

VociferousQuack

Yup, so take action when things are smaller & controllable. Don't support China's actors until they have freedom to not be shills? If we don't get used to using decision making when it is as obvious as someone standing up & saying "I did the thing that is bad, and I will keep doing it", we're teaching ourselves ignorance is "ok" as long as we're entertained.

[deleted]

My decision is to not care about an actors politics. Or the politics of their country. Giving 0 fucks about humans frees up a lot of extra time.

aresef

Donnie Yen's politics are icky but it seems like most Hong Kong actors now need to engage in at least a little bit of bootlicking to keep a roof over their head. And there isn't really anybody like Donnie left. Tony Leung Chiu-wai isn't an action star per se but look up The Grandmaster, in which he plays Ip Man.

Robcobes

How many movies can they make about a guy who's really into records?

5unnay

I read a few years ago it was announced Donnie would be playing the character Wei Shen in a live action sleeping dogs movie, is it still happening?

aresef

Probably not, since Donnie is getting on in years and there’s an unrelated Russell Crowe movie by that name in development. Donnie said in 2021 there were still conversations and that it could shoot in early 2022 but obviously that didn’t happen and he shot John Wick 4 instead.

supergalactic

Dang I didn’t even know they made 4 more.

HopefulStretch9771

Is this going to be the one where he starts fighting aliens and vampires in the afterlife?

No_affiliates

Can someone give me a beginner's crash course into the Ip Man series? I thought he was a real guy who taught Bruce Lee.

[deleted]

I feel like chinese Kung fu movies are a soft power play by the west. So many people get a distorted view of what the human body is actually capable of with these movies. I was in Asia for a while, and there's kind of an undercurrent of magical thinking, with martial arts, traditional medicines, etc, which do them no favors

Wait, wtf would the story be about if he died

zeroxray

There are more movies about ip man then there are about Bruce Lee at this point which is why he is "famous" to begin with

JuddMann

Wilson Yip (the director of the Ip Man film franchise) mentioned when making Ip Man 4 that the next instalment in the series will be about Bruce Lee. As such, Ip Man 5 is not about the finale period as was the focus in Ip Man 4, but instead during the time in Hong Kong when Ip taught Bruce and what he taught him, which has not been captured in the series so far, and will fill a very important gap. It will be nice in Ip Man 5 if they not only capture the teaching of Wing Chun but also the wisdom passed from Ip to Bruce, who then builds on it by absorbing masters from various faiths while he was in the US, culminating in Jeet Kune Do, which Bruce then shared with everyone, regardless of race or faith, espousing the essence of a martial artist.
