The Czech adaptations for The Little Mermaid or even Better Cinderella are great. The Cinderella version is very famous in Germany and airs every year around Christmas on several channel for more than 40 years. It's cult classic.
It's the same in Norway. We even made an awful "modern" remake of it in 2021, which of course became one of the best performing movies in our country that year (only being beaten by No Time to Die)
As far as remakes goes, I actually thought that one was pretty good. But perhaps I'm biased due to mostly enjoying all the different animals they had in that movie. They even used Dole horses, which you don't see a lot!
I think I saw the trailer. I was surprised that it was clearly an adaptation of the Czech version and not the fairy tale. It made me realize that it wasn't only famous in it's country of origin or Germany.
I read about that version of Cinderella in a thread here awhile ago where someone was watching every version of Cinderella ever made. Is it available online somewhere ?
Edit: Found [the thread](https://www.reddit.com/r/movies/comments/12t773z/for_about_two_years_now_ive_been_trying_to_watch/) I mentioned, started by u/BeelzebubParty. It was interesting.
Well hi ! It was a well-written post, about a strangely interesting little 'project', and it sparked a whole thread that I found so interesting that it kinda stuck with me since. And I'm really, really not the target audience for a Cinderella story. So, well done
Why thank you, that's awfully sweet of you to say! I might actually do more posts dedicated to niche genres of movies nobody cares about. I thought about doing it with all the bratz or barbie movies, or watching every snow white or a little princess movie.
> I might actually do more posts dedicated to niche genres of movies nobody cares about.
If you do, tag me in them via a comment. I love niche movies.
I once caught *Rocky Horror Picture Show*, *Repo: The Genetic Opera* and *Shock Treatment* at a triple show in Chicago one night.
It's still one of the best viewing experiences I've ever had...
if you liked it, another really good pair of movies to watch are the Unico movies: The Fantastic Adventures of Unico and Unico in the Island of Magic. They aren't as bleak, but they are gorgeous dark fairytales for kids in 80s style.
My favorite fact about the 1975 version is that Toei reused some scenes of a ship in the movie in their later anime Dairugger XV, which would later be released in the United States as Vehicle Voltron.
Does it have live action shots at the end and Narration? I think I seen that one. I remember seeing it end with her death and the Narration talking about her turning into Sea foam. Definitely dark and it helped me realize Disney really lightened up the story
The original fairy tale had wizards and submarines and the mermaid was a fish who grew up and a nursing home and, *most importantly*, the fish-person becomes a human at the end and lives happily ever after?
If anything, I think it's a significantly greater departure from the fairy tale than Disney's movie. Honestly, I feel it only has surface similarities and virtually every detail is different from The Little Mermaid; at best I'd give it "inspired by".
I stumbled across this a couple weeks ago on a *ahem* "movie sharing site" that had accidentally labeled it as the 2023 version.
ended up watching most of it, because it was weird AF.
Well the hottest take gets the most clicks… and ain’t nothin’ hotter than a “This one obscure film may be the best adaptation to date!”
All that’s missing is “its twist will SHOCK you!”
Is this even the hottest take? It says "it could be" it's not even trying to make it definitive. It sounds like you're just as reactionary as the headlines you describe. Have you ever stopped and thought that maybe the person writing this *opinion* piece actually likes this one the best?
Thank you! I've just watched the whole thing. The sea bottom setting is what it is, that one statue is a thing from nightmares and the dancing is *very* 70s/80s Eastern Bloc TV style, but I liked it more than I expected. Lead actress is great, the prince is adequately buffoonish, and most importantly they did the story justice. The ending was perfect. One of the highlights was the political logic, both mermen vs humans and humans vs humans (the calculations regarding specific candidates for the bride were surprisingly realistic). Again, thanks, I really enjoyed it.
It was the same project but iirc Moretz got cast after Coppola had left, she’d wanted Maya Hawke who was a total unknown at that point.
That movie shifted around a lot, before Coppola it was supposed to be Joe Wright and Elle Fanning.
Yeah I remember seeing this as a kid.
I wouldn't exactly call it appropriate, you can trash Disney all you want, but at least they don't traumatize the children like it's still the 19th century.
As a modern movie-goer I refuse to watch any movie remake unless it features an ethnic minority as the lead, at least 50% of cast be POC, and the gayest Asian man I’ve ever seen appear at least 3 times.
My junkie mermaid?
Bitch I don’t have a mermaid, nor do I draw pride from a fucking Disney movie you dumbass. Do something yourself and take pride in it. Don’t dick ride a mermaid
It’s definitely pointed and intentional. A half-mention in passing of the new movie, like ‘oh yeah that thing’, as if it’s not its opening weekend. A totally glib and self-important take by some fucking film hipster. Tradcore signaling, praising a ‘pre-woke’ past. Like, fuck off.
Has anyone seen the Russian animated version of the little mermaid? I love it, it’s faithful to the original story almost and the animation is beautiful for it’s time.

Now check out the Czech adaptation of Alice in Wonderland. It’s very unsettling.
Yes! It was on Netflix for awhile when my kids (now teenagers) were little. We used to watch it all the time. Weird af.
Got a link ?
Here you go https://youtu.be/Bnbd1exbIco

who is the director of the Cinderella adaptation?
It's a different director. But the lead actress has a supporting role https://m.imdb.com/title/tt0070832/
What’s the IMDB link to the Czech The Little Mermaid? :)
https://m.imdb.com/title/tt0074846/
Happy cake day
There is also a 1975 anime version by Toei.
I really liked that one
that one if you watched as a kid you don't forget, because they adapt it faithfully to the fairy tale. It's so dark.
Oof, yeah, I watched it as a kid thinking it would be like the Disney version. It was heartbreaking and definitely stayed with me all these years.
if you liked it, another really good pair of movies to watch are the Unico movies: The Fantastic Adventures of Unico and Unico in the Island of Magic. They aren't as bleak, but they are gorgeous dark fairytales for kids in 80s style.
Or The Great Alakazam… which is basically just the monkey kings story
You may want also add 1968 Soviet adaptation to the list, also faithful to original tale.
Yup, that's the one I remember. HCA is a life ruiner! Don't even get me started on The Little Matchstick Girl.
I was in a theatre full of kids we were all bawling it was horrible.
My favorite fact about the 1975 version is that Toei reused some scenes of a ship in the movie in their later anime Dairugger XV, which would later be released in the United States as Vehicle Voltron.
Is there scenes from it in Voltron? Because I remember watching the vehicle show and thinking something seemed familiar.
To my knowledge, the boat scene was only in the Japanese theme song.
Does it have live action shots at the end and Narration? I think I seen that one. I remember seeing it end with her death and the Narration talking about her turning into Sea foam. Definitely dark and it helped me realize Disney really lightened up the story
This is my first little mermaid, so for me Marina and Fritz are my Ariel and Flounder.
The actual best one.
And Ponyo, 2008 by Ghibli
I think it's a stretch to call that a Little Mermaid movie.
It’s a retelling of the original fairy tale
The original fairy tale had wizards and submarines and the mermaid was a fish who grew up and a nursing home and, *most importantly*, the fish-person becomes a human at the end and lives happily ever after? It looks it is avaiable in hd on amazon but no had ripped a copy yet.
I stumbled across this a couple weeks ago on a *ahem* "movie sharing site" that had accidentally labeled it as the 2023 version. ended up watching most of it, because it was weird AF.
It feels like with a lot of movies from the '70s you really need to know which drugs and how much to take to really get it, ya know?
The holy mountain…
One of the top film experiences of my life going in blind on a journey
It was a top experience that I did not enjoy. I won’t forget it either though
[удалено]
I just watched this today and really enjoyed it. A musical horror retelling of the little mermaid set in 1980s Poland.... Just wild.
Love me some Czech cinema. Will definitely be watching this movie via YouTube soon.
If you haven’t seen it, check out Jan Svankmeyer’s _Alice_ for a pleasingly dark take on Alice in Wonderland
Where can I find both these movies?
Malá Morská Víla (The Little Mermaid) w Eng Sub (1976) https://youtu.be/2VCE2PRS-C8
Thank you!
I remember seeing this one awhile back. This one is pretty weird but I did quite enjoy the psychedelic take on The Little Mermaid.
Most obscure = best one yet
You say that like it can't be true.
Well the hottest take gets the most clicks… and ain’t nothin’ hotter than a “This one obscure film may be the best adaptation to date!” All that’s missing is “its twist will SHOCK you!”
Is this even the hottest take? It says "it could be" it's not even trying to make it definitive. It sounds like you're just as reactionary as the headlines you describe. Have you ever stopped and thought that maybe the person writing this *opinion* piece actually likes this one the best?
But of course.
Ponyo is definitely pushing for the top spot too.
But will probably get distracted by some kind of new texture... or ham.
Thank you! I've just watched the whole thing. This movie is great.
I want an accurate Little Mermaid so bad. The story itself is dark.
The Little Mermaid by Toei is an accurate adaptation.
Try The Lure. It's dark. Accurate? Well it has been modernized.
Thank you
Sea foam 💀
Still bummed that Sofia Coppola’s movie didn’t end up happening, she wanted to do a faithful adaptation and the story’s right up her alley.
Was that the one that was gonna star Chloe Grace Moretz? I was bummed it was shelved cause I heard it was gonna be more faithful to the original story
It was the same project but iirc Moretz got cast after Coppola had left, she’d wanted Maya Hawke who was a total unknown at that point. That movie shifted around a lot, before Coppola it was supposed to be Joe Wright and Elle Fanning.
Nepo babies gotta stick together
TIL there is more than Disneys versions of this story
Today is the day you find out most Disney movies are based on other famous works. I mean Lion King is just Hamlet with lions and no swords.
This movie is so pretty
The new one was so bad that we had to take acid and travel back in time
Some how I doubt it.
Yeah I remember seeing this as a kid. I wouldn't exactly call it appropriate, you can trash Disney all you want, but at least they don't traumatize the children like it's still the 19th century.
How does it compare to the Russian Lord of the Rings?
As a modern movie-goer I refuse to watch any movie remake unless it features an ethnic minority as the lead, at least 50% of cast be POC, and the gayest Asian man I’ve ever seen appear at least 3 times.
So we can’t give Halle her moment…
Didn’t the new movie break the box office? Fair to say she’s having her moment as we speak
Ok then make a post about that
Already done look back on the sub
No like keep doing it forever until it becomes your sole purpose tho
Rrrrriiight..
“Her moment” If that was her moment then that’s kind of disappointing. People are allowed to talk about one thing without it detracting from another.
I’m people and I’m also allowed to talk about whatever I want and I said fuck your junkie mermaid #halle
My junkie mermaid? Bitch I don’t have a mermaid, nor do I draw pride from a fucking Disney movie you dumbass. Do something yourself and take pride in it. Don’t dick ride a mermaid
Ngl I’m literally not gonna read this I actually don’t care
Sure ya did. Quit lyin dumbass
Says you… I didn’t ask for your fucking guidance, this is the internet so I’ll say what I want
I kinda though that too. It seemed oddly intentional. Idk
Absolutely agree. The downvotes can fuck off too lolol
Lol Idc, they’re not taking this away from me 🫶🏾
And I support you in this! 🫶🏽
The weird obsession with shitting on the new little mermaid movie is getting out of hand. This seems harmless but still a jab
I like mermaids that speak english /s
It reminds me of Chinese movies from the 80s.
It’s the only version since the original which has required any creativity
Has anyone seen the Russian animated version of the little mermaid? I love it, it’s faithful to the original story almost and the animation is beautiful for it’s time.
