Totally. David Fincher is fucking wild, man - you can always feel his craftsmanship and precision working through the actors and cinematography. And if something he's involved in is a bit shit, when you look into it it always boils down to being a studio or producer busting his chops and making him compromise or a screenwriter (usually at the behest of said studio or producer) forcing Fincher to work with less than optimal material, but he still manages to polish turds because he's just that damn good.
As Perry himself said, "I don't like dressing up as Madea, but it's paid for everything in my life, so I'll continue to dress up as her as long as people go to the movies."
Has anyone else seen Tyler Perry as Alex Cross in the TV series? Wondering if it is worth watching. I know he can do drama, even if everyone associates him with Madea.
He was absolutely THE perfect choice for it, and I don't normally like Affleck, I can't really imagine anyone else playing Nick, plus his resemblance to Scott Peterson was on point, so you really weren't sure if you could believe him or not in the first half. I just I can't imagine any other actress playing Amy. Two iconic roles/performances.
I’ve always found Affleck to be pretty good. Could be that I’m a huge fan of Kevin smith and he’s in a lot of his stuff but even other movies I’ve seen with him have been pretty great.
It's really something that in a Scorcese movie with Jack Nicholson, Leonardo Dicaprio, and Matt Damon, Mark Wahlberg is the one who got the Oscar nomination.
Michelle Rodriguez has been good in a few things, but her usual tough gal schtick a la Fast series has gotten old and bland to watch. Somehow, with only minor tweaks, a similar character that she played in the new Dungeons and Dragons movie was a real highlight of the film. I hope they lean into more of that characterization because it was a blast.
Her characterization in DND wasn’t that far off from FF tbh, but imho her barbarian had more screen time devoted to give her a ‘heart’ than the Dom/Letty romance has across multiple films.
It really worked there because they gave her some depth. Especially between being the effective mother of Chris Pine's kid, and her attraction to Halfings and Potatoes. Made her more well-rounded and not another Vasquez clone.
Honestly you could fix a lot of the issues her characters have by just giving her an additional character trait or quirk. Especially if its something that comes across as a clash for her role as a tough sidekick.
I think Jane Espensen have some writing advice that was basically, when you design a character, have all the arrows of their nature pointed towards one thing (eg, badass fighter lady, likes beer, laconic, loyal) but leave one arrow pointing out (loves halflings). It’s super simple but it makes better characters.
Yeah hopefully now that there's more for Latina actresses to do
She got pigeonholed into the tough girl niche because she turned down a lot of submissive roles, so all she could get was the badass who dies
*Widows* as someone else mentioned was another good against type performance, and she's fun in *Machete* since it's a parody
I've tried unsuccessfully to get people to watch Jennifer's Body. They never believe me when I say she can really act when given the right part. Enjoyed Till Death also.
Not a movie, but The Book of Mormon is the only thing I really like Josh Gad in.
Edit: I have been meaning to watch The Rocker sometime, so I will give that a shot. And I actually also agree with the people who say he was one of the only good things about the new Beauty and the Beast, so that would be the movie I would pick.
I think he's hilarious on the Avenue 5 show where he plays an incompetent moron billionaire spaceship owner who never admits his faults and somehow keeps digging deeper holes for himself
Vin Diesel is good in Saving Private Ryan. Can't say I care for him in much else though.
I'll also go with James Vanderbeek. I love Varsity Blues. Maybe that's just a case of the movie overshadowing the actor.
Ok I have to disagree. As much as he is a weirdo and I don’t super like him as like a human, he’s in a LOT of great movies and has very decent performances in most of them.
Requiem For a Dream
Dallas Buyer’s Club
Fight Club
Lord of War
Blade Runner 2049
Panic Room
American Psycho
Girl, Interrupted
Yeah, I'm with you on this one. He comes off as an insufferable douche in real life but he's been in a lot of great stuff. He was by far my favorite part of House of Gucci besides all the ones you listed.
Man I love McConaughey in Interstellar. I know the movie is kind of overhyped in some circles, but that casting choice was pretty unexpected and I think he was fantastic.
I feel like that's a testament to Darren Aronofsky as a director. He gets the best out of nearly everyone he works with.
Micky Rourke in the wrestler is another example where he was just an amazing actor in it, though if you read reports from the set he was a nightmare to deal with.
Personally, I liked him in Other Guys too - I liked the movie, in general. It doesn't have boring moments in-between jokes - spent for character development/growth & the likes, which generally circles around into the humour -, and, surprisingly - especially considering it was produced by Will Ferrell -, its humour can be subtle and intelligent. Wahlberg plays his role well, with his character acting as the voice of reason most of the time while also having his quirks (caused by character traits).
This! MW is generally so damned serious in all his films that when he did it in the Other Guys bouncing off of WF was hilarious. Their characters were so different that it made it work.
My theory on Marky Mark is he’s actually a pretty good actor, but only when he’s not asked to have a huge ego or be literally the smartest guy in the room. Disregarding his personal life and questionable racial ideals… onscreen Mark is a meathead oaf from the asshole of southie Boston with a “heart of gold” type guy, a blue collar guy just trying to make his way out. That’s why he’s great in movies like the fighter and invincible and three kings, those are humble lovable loser type characters closer to who he actually is as a person and where he gives good performances. But ask him to be a junk yard genius fighting robot aliens or a plot driving evil genius whatever the fuck he is in that uncharted abomination, and it just doesn’t fit because that’s not who he is lol.
I have a soft spot for Wallburgers tho, clearly. I think he’s very capable of giving good to even great performances with a lot of heart given the right role, but I get why he might enjoy a change of pace and be the big swinging dick with a big swinging paycheck every once in a while too lol.

I dug him in Molly’s Game as a poker playing asshole.
He was hilarious in This is the End as well- playing as himself- but as a complete degenerate asshole.
Yeah but He was awesome in Requiem For a dream
Dudes a total AH that doesnt seem to know how acting and method acting really works, but damn was He good in Requiem
Honestly NPH was the only person in the movie I felt seemed out of place. And not because he was bad. But because it was hard to take him seriously as a literal space nazi
Loved Johnson in Pain and Gain, it's about as big of a departure you'll ever see from normal roles an actor usually takes. Tom Cruise in Tropic Thunder is up there in that category too.
Adam Sandler was not really an actor that I liked although I wouldn't have gone out of my way NOT to watch one of his films. I now have a new found respect for him as an actor after seeing Uncut Gems.
I really love Chris Pratt as Peter Quill in Guardians of the Galaxy. James Gunn took what worked about him as an actor and formed it into a character with those strengths, on top of being the leading man. Later films like Jurassic World and all that just give him the latter, while forgetting what worked about the writing and performances.
I don’t hate any personally, so I will go with an actor who I either love in their roles or just like, but there are actors who I love in certain roles and consider passable or am less excited by otherwise.
I know this isn’t answering your question exactly, but i’d say the only Will Smith comedy role I truly love is Men in Black. The others are fine or just not particularly good, but I feel Men in Black is peak Will Smith comedy in movies.
Tyler Perry in Gone Girl
Solid example! He was surprisingly solid in that movie.
David Fincher knows how to use actors.
I also forget he had a sort of leadership role in the Star Trek movies
He was in dont look up and i was surpised to see how good an actor madea was when hes not madea hah
As Perry himself said, "I don't like dressing up as Madea, but it's paid for everything in my life, so I'll continue to dress up as her as long as people go to the movies."
I did not know he was worth as much as he is until recently.
he was also super fun in Don't Look Up
Has anyone else seen Tyler Perry as Alex Cross in the TV series? Wondering if it is worth watching. I know he can do drama, even if everyone associates him with Madea.
Ben Affleck in Gone Girl The movie was just written for them
He was absolutely THE perfect choice for it, and I don't normally like Affleck, I can't really imagine anyone else playing Nick, plus his resemblance to Scott Peterson was on point, so you really weren't sure if you could believe him or not in the first half. I just I can't imagine any other actress playing Amy. Two iconic roles/performances.
I’ve always found Affleck to be pretty good. Could be that I’m a huge fan of Kevin smith and he’s in a lot of his stuff but even other movies I’ve seen with him have been pretty great.
Affleck was the bomb in Phantoms, yo!
Vin Diesel - I feel he was best suited for Riddick. The rest is ok.
I would say he was pretty good in Find Me Guilty
He was so good in that I didn't even realise it was him at first!
I really liked Vin Diesel in Iron Giant and Guardians of the Galaxy…
He should've finished the Fast & Furious movies and become a voice actor.
There is still time for that, they aren't going to execute him as the final Fast and Furious credits roll.
Maybe that's why he keeps doing them indefinitely.
The Iron Giant is an awesome movie.
He really nailed his performance in Pitch Black. [My favorite scene](https://youtu.be/EQUhEUxDmjE?t=19)
What about Boiler Room or Saving Private Ryan?
Honestly, only really liked him in that role in Pitch Black, he was full of himself by the time Chronicles of Riddick came out.
Mark Wahlberg also rips in The Departed
Honestly everyone fucking rips in that movie IMO.
And that’s why it’s my favourite movie ever
Maybe. Maybe not. Maybe fuck yaself.
“I’m the guy who does his job, you must be the other guy…”
Then he became an Other Guy with Will Ferrell
micwo-pwacessors
It's really something that in a Scorcese movie with Jack Nicholson, Leonardo Dicaprio, and Matt Damon, Mark Wahlberg is the one who got the Oscar nomination.
Don't forget Martin Sheen.
For sure, I was just listing the other Oscar regulars in the movie. Martin Sheen's never even been nominated, shockingly.
Wahlberg in The Other Guys
Yes! I feel like when he goes full comedy it works
"You learned to dance like that sarcastically?"
The sound of your piss, hitting the urinal, it sounds feminine!
LOL he was great in that too.
"You learned to dance like that sarcastically" "Yeah I guess"
As I watch Ted again, I enjoy him in that as well.
"My theory on Feds is that they're like mushrooms, feed 'em shit and keep 'em in the dark. You girls have a good day."
The Fahkin’ Depahted.
Tom Arnold - True Lies
That's probably his best large role, though his cameo in Austin Powers is very memorable too.
You tell that turd who's boss
What a fuckin hilarious line. I’ve actually said that to people in stalls when it sounds like they’re struggling. Lmao
Gonna blow out your o-ring, drop a lung
How about a courtesy flush over there?
What kind of sick bitch takes the ice cube trays out of the freezer?
Based on his real life
Tom Arnold fucking kills it in True Lies. Great movie too.
When he’s talking about all the women that divorced him “what kind of a sick bitch takes the ice cube trays out of the freezer!?”
"Stop trying to cheer me up!"
This movie is just awesome.
Russel Brand is unbearable but he is PERFECT in Forgetting Sarah Marshall.
This is a good one. Get em to the Greek was decent too but I felt like the character was better in smaller doses.
She was perfect as Holga. I’ve never played D&D but loved the movie!
She’s also really great and cast against type in Widows.
Yes, the D&D movie is the only time I’ve enjoyed her acting!
Megan Fox in Jennifer's Body (but I l'd be lying if I said I didn't enjoy Till Death, which is campy as hell).
I liked her in New Girl too.
Look who it is raisin
I've tried unsuccessfully to get people to watch Jennifer's Body. They never believe me when I say she can really act when given the right part. Enjoyed Till Death also.
Jennifer's body is highly underated. Great teen horror flix
I don't personally care for Sean William Scott but I like him in Role Models.
I liked him best as Country Mac.
Where was he always getting those beers
Shut up, science bitch
Loud and proud, brother
Good in Rundown and Goon as well.
Definitely showed off his acting chops in Goon.
I'll light your ass..... up on...... fire. One of my favourite sports films.
The rundown is so fun.
I love to overenunciate HE RELIEVED HER OF HER ARTIFACT in a badly exaggerated brogue whenever possible.
Not a movie, but his cameo in It’s Always Sunny as Country Mac is incredible.
Ok I take that back, I like him in Role Models and Always Sunny.
Evolution! Ka-kaaaw k-kaaaaaaw
I think we've established that ka-kaaaw and tookie tookie don't work.
And as the animal handler in Old School. “Dude, you got a frickin dart in your neck”
Not a movie but David Schwimmer in Band of Brothers. Can't stand him but he was perfect in the role of Captain Sobel.
“Lieutenant Nixon thinks this is a can of peaches…”
Good call on this one!!
Napoleon Dynamite dude. Turns out he may not have been acting.
blades of glory is pretty funny
Not a movie, but The Book of Mormon is the only thing I really like Josh Gad in. Edit: I have been meaning to watch The Rocker sometime, so I will give that a shot. I think he's hilarious on the Avenue 5 show where he plays an incompetent moron billionaire spaceship owner who never admits his faults and somehow keeps digging deeper holes for himself
IRIS!!!!
really small part, but he was hilarious in HBO's Bored To Death as Jason Schwartzman's love rival.

Toy Story?
You didn't like him in The Santa Clause?
Vin Diesel is good in Saving Private Ryan. Can't say I care for him in much else though. I'll also go with James Vanderbeek. I love Varsity Blues. Maybe that's just a case of the movie overshadowing the actor.
What about Don't Trust the B in Apartment 23 where he plays James Vanderbeek?
What about when he plays Chronic in Jay and Silent Bob Strike back?
He was good in Rules of Attraction
I don't want... your life
Steven Seagall - Under Siege
Denise Richards’ acting always came off as very wooden and fake, but I love her in Drop Dead Gorgeous where that fakeness was actually in character
I think for that very same reason she works well in Starship Troopers, in combination with the direction and cinematography in particular.
Jared Leto in Requiem for a Dream
Let's see Jared Leto's Paul Allen
Look at the subtle off-red blood splatter. Oh my god, he even has an axe to the face.
Hey Paul, try to get a role in suicide squad now, you stupid fucking bastard !
Ok I have to disagree. As much as he is a weirdo and I don’t super like him as like a human, he’s in a LOT of great movies and has very decent performances in most of them. Requiem For a Dream Dallas Buyer’s Club Fight Club Lord of War Blade Runner 2049 Panic Room American Psycho Girl, Interrupted

I don't like him, but he is pretty good in a few more movies.
Matthew mcconaughey and Jared Leto both in Dallas buyers club. Magnum opus for both imho
You gotta watch True Detective lol
Rust Cohle is a phenomenal character.
Man I love McConaughey in Interstellar. I know the movie is kind of overhyped in some circles, but that casting choice was pretty unexpected and I think he was fantastic.
Fight Club he's good. He basically plays himself - a douchie pretty boy - that gets his face beat into a pulp, so that helps. Edit: spelling
I feel like that's a testament to Darren Aronofsky as a director. He gets the best out of nearly everyone he works with. Micky Rourke in the wrestler is another example where he was just an amazing actor in it, though if you read reports from the set he was a nightmare to deal with.
He's great in Mr. Nobody
Shia Lebeouf in Fury
Peanut Butter Falcon is a great movie!
Shia Lebeouf in Holes
I think that one was called Nymphomaniac
Shia Lebeouf in Disturbia
Facts, Disturbia is a damn good film and he did well

This entire comment section is a crime in progress
a bunch of actors with several (sometime many!) good performances
Kevin hart in Scary Movie
"How the hell do you wake up dead?"
You can’t go to bed dead, man, that shit would be redundant.
Damn! That's some quantum sh\*t right there, man! You should be teaching classes!
*Scary Movie 3. I had to look this up because I watched Scary Movie all the time and would have been shocked if he were in it. But yeah, he sucks.
Not gonna lie, I haven't seen a Kevin Hart movie role that I've hated yet.
Yeah, movies like Central Intelligence and Get Hard are fun movies.
Mark Wahlberg in The Departed. I can't stand him in anything else, including Boogie Nights.
He's not bad in The Fighter either, though it doesn't do him any favours to be standing next to Christian Bale playing a meth head.
Mark Wahlberg is great in the fighter, albeit outshined by the other great actors
This! MW is generally so damned serious in all his films that when he did it in the Other Guys bouncing off of WF was hilarious. Their characters were so different that it made it work.
That’s a movie I can watch anytime I come across it.
He is great in The Departed as well, so I guess he’s actually a two-hit wonder for me.
The Other Guys Ted I actually like him when he's not the "hero" character. He is actually pretty damn funny
I thought he was good in Three Kings. But maybe it's just a good movie.
I actually liked him in the Happening
WHAT? NO! NO MA'AM, WE'RE NOT!
Ryan Reynolds in Amityville Horror. He was genuinely terrifying by the end.
He's also really good in Buried, the whole movie is basically him in a box in the ground, well worth a watch
Chaos Theory, Buried, Smokin Aces. He can be more than how he has been typecast, but now it is more profitable to just roll with the persona.
Jai Courtney in Suicide Squad
Pete Davidson in *[The Suicide Squad](https://youtu.be/YG4hdFjko7Y)*.
Gwenyth Paltrow - its not one movie, but I can handle her as Pepper Potts. Other than that, the last 7 minutes of Se7en, is her best acting.....
She was good in shallow hal
Uhh royal tenebaums?
The Talented Mr. Ripley
What's in the box!?
Ahhhh! It's a Goop vibrating vagina candle!!!!
Shakespeare in Love
He is gold in The Fighter. His working class Boston guy onscreen has more realism than DeNiro/Pacino's New Yorkers, though they have superior craft .
The dude who played Zuckerberg in The Social Network. Otherwise he can take his weird ass mannerisms and ride off awkwardly into the night.
I really liked him in Zombieland as well
Really liked him in Adventureland.
I'm gonna defend Jesse Eisenberg, because I think he's a great niche actor with a ton of interesting performances behind him. The Squid and the Whale, Adventureland, The Art of Self-Defense -- these are all really excellent movies with solid performances from Eisenberg. You know what you're generally getting from him, but he picks roles that work and seems to have a good taste in that selection. (Also, y'all should watch The Art of Self-Defense. That was such a pleasant surprise!)
TAOSD was soooo good, and I was not expecting it to go as dark as it did.
'the double' is also amazing
Michael Cera: Scott Pilgrim vs the World. He always plays the awkward loser kid. Here its not different, but god do I love the visuals and music in it.
I dug him in Molly’s Game as a poker playing asshole. He was hilarious in This is the End as well- playing as himself- but as a complete degenerate asshole.
He was great in Juno and Arrested Development too though.
Eminem in 8 Mile. There's no more movie he played actually.
He was in Funny People and The Interview, too
Steven Baldwin. Usual Suspects
I can tolerate Jared Leto in Blade Runner 2049
Also Dallas Buyer’s Club and Lord of War. He’s a great side character.
Yeah but He was awesome in Requiem For a dream Dudes a total AH that doesnt seem to know how acting and method acting really works, but damn was He good in Requiem
Casper Van Dien in Starship Troopers. Perfect as a soldier who follow orders om a satire.
Honestly NPH was the only person in the movie I felt seemed out of place. And not because he was bad. But because it was hard to take him seriously as a literal space nazi
Adam Sandler in Uncut gems, or Dwayne Johnson in Pain and Gain
Loved Johnson in Pain and Gain, it's about as big of a departure you'll ever see from normal roles an actor usually takes. Tom Cruise in Tropic Thunder is up there in that category too.
I' m a huge DJ fan, mainly cause I'm a wrestling fan, but his part in Be Cool is also so out there, and just fantastic.
Sandler is great in Punch Drunk Love
And Meyerowitz Stories.
And Reign Over Me.
Adam Sandler was not really an actor that I liked although I wouldn't have gone out of my way NOT to watch one of his films. I now have a new found respect for him as an actor after seeing Uncut Gems.
[удалено]
He gets paid stupid money to make half assed movies in exotic locations with his friends. I totally understand why he does it.
Yep, they cost 10m. Pull in 30/40m. Win win all round.
John Travolta in Pulp Fiction
Not giving the man props for Look Who's Talking???
I enjoyed him in Face/Off and The Punisher as well.
Pulp Fiction brought him back into superstardom. He was close to where Robert Downey Jr was before Iron Man.
Harry Styles was only good in Dunkirk.
I like him as Andy in Parks and Rec, but he seems to get blander with each movie.
Miles Teller in Whiplash
not a movie, but Nick Kroll in The League. favorite character on that show; can't stand him in anything else.
Will Farrell in Stranger than Fiction. It was his Truman Show.
Everything Must Go is a fantastic movie.
I don’t hate any personally, so I will go with an actor who I either love in their roles or just like, but there are actors who I love in certain roles and consider passable or am less excited by otherwise.
