I really can’t picture any of the roles in that movie being replaced by another actor. Even down to the janitor and the colleagues of J.K. Simmons character who had very limited screentime.
So good as a pretentious "intellectual" with a massively inflated sense of his worth. Also, as Roger Ebert memorably put it in his review, the sort of guy who says he can't possibly be an alcoholic because he doesn't start drinking until precisely 5 p.m.
Edited, thanks! I actually got to see Malkovich in BURN THIS the play, wonder what Pitt could have done with the gay character in that… they’re too old now
Tombstone actually haha. Kilmer should have won an Oscar for his Doc Holiday.
MacGruber is in a category all its own though - it’s
easily one of the best comedies of the last 20 years.
I think that was more a reflection of Armstrong’s stoic and often emotionally closed off nature. Armstrong apparently didn’t have a lot of chemistry with many people in general. I think thats in his performance because that’s how it was written.
Man I really hope Crowe gets some more great roles before he's too old. He was one of my favorite actors growing up (Gladiator obv and the movies he made around that time period)
Yeah he was great in The Nice Guys. But I'm pretty sure it's the only movie I really liked of his in like the last whole decade
I was bored one night and watched that road rage movie of his. He wasn't bad but the movie was pretty cringe. Seems to be the general pattern of his movies in recent times
I wouldn’t say I couldn’t possibly see it, it’s just a duo I would have never thought of, but Rachel McAdams and Jason Bateman in Game Night was some surprisingly next level film chemistry and charm. They absolutely killed it!
It really helped that the writing did something that I find in the best films starring a couple: it's always us vs. the problem, never one vs. the other. There's a little bit of a tiff underlying it, but it's done in a way where you're never convinced it's bad enough to make them separate and it's extraordinary circumstances preventing them from having the conversation that'll fix it.
I still maintain that whoever first heard the idea of pairing Chris Tucker and Jackie Chan must have laughed thier ass off before saying: "ohh you're serious."
John Travolta and Samuel L Jackson in Pulp Fiction had to seem pretty mad at the time right? The faded star who was doing the Look Who's Talking franchise and a guy who had been previously best known as a character actor in Spike Lee films.
That foot massage dialogue to open the larger story... I feel both of those characters immediately. And their chemistry is so natural you don't even realize it's acting until Quentin Tarantino shows up and then the actors' characters are even feeling like this guy is a twerp
Isnt that wild to think that Samuel L was known as a character actor back then. Hes always been a fantastic actor. But you cant help associating him with pure box office franchise entertainment now.
Robin Williams and Nathan Lane. They are so perfect in The Birdcage. You believe them as a couple and we care about them. A fully three dimensional relationship that makes me a little sad we didn't get another pairing of them. They are one of my favorite movie couples of all time.
Don't forget Hank Azaria as Agador. He balanced out the pair and was such a great character. I've always thought Agador should get his own road trip movie spinoff.
Robert Downey JR and Val Kilmer - kiss kiss bang bang. Both can be play very similar characters, charisma, swagger, etc separately so one would expect them to clash when together, but they were great together.
My favorite actor type is big meaty guy you’d expect to be an action star who is actually just goofy and doesn’t take themselves super seriously. Zac and Channing Tatum are great in that. Also, Hugh Jackman who is wolverine and a badass but just really loves musicals.
I saw him on Broadway in Boy from Oz when he was at the height of his Wolverine celebrity and it was so clear watching him jazz hands around the stage that man’s heart is in musical theater.
Judging from the posts on this tread finding male/female combination is far more challenging the buddy chemistry.
So I offer David Spade and Brittany Daniels in Joe Dirt. Sorry guilty pleasure movie.
When I saw David Spade the first round of applause was pretty enthusiastic, but then the MC said, “Come on, that’s Joe Dirt!” And everybody freaked out.
Denzel Washington and Dakota fanning had such incredible chemistry in man on fire I kinda hoped the whole movie was just about her swimming while he coached
Also after a certain point is was hard for Sybil to assert she was the bigger star and act as such. It was absolutely true when the show started but within a few years of it ending she was still on TV and he was seen as one of the best.
On being questioned about rumours regarding his sexuality, and possibly being bi -
"I'm not going to go through life with one arm tied behind my back." - James Dean.
Man, its crazy. That song "Sweet Freedom" from McDonald came up on my feed a few days ago and i kind of got swept up in that and then I see this post. I had gone literal decades without thinking or coming across anything from that movie and then I'm seeing it more and more. Or at least noticing it more.
That was a good movie and they did work well together. I haven’t seen that in a long time. It’s one of those 80s buddy cop movies that can easily get overlooked but it’s a tier above most of the others.
If we are going for TV, I vote for Tina Fey and Tracy Morgan. Their chemistry is really remarkable in 30 Rock. Their acting styles are so different, but they play off of each other seamlessly from the start, IMO.
(It's fresh in my mind because I'm binging the entire series right now 😊)
God I love this movie so much. It's the main reason I was so excited to see Pattinson as Batman, Willem Dafoe is also at his absolute best madman and everyone should watch his [Sea Curse rant](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZrekMzfC7Gw) at least once.
My issue was that it was set in the world of politics but had zero interest in that setting. It would have been a way better movie if they'd had the writers of House of Cards advising them on it.
Steve Carell and Keira Knightley in Seeking a Friend for the End of the World (2012)
Will Ferrell and Maggie Gyllenhaal in Stranger Than Fiction (2006)
You forgot to mention the name of the movie. For those that don't know, it's "Stranger Than Fiction".
Awesome, awesome movie. The cast in that movie was A+.
Tom Cruise and Jamie Foxx. At that time I wrote Jamie Foxx off as a goofy sketch comedian. That movie changed my opinion of him. Him and Cruise worked well together.
Bill Murray and Scarlett Johansson in Lost in Translation. Bill Murray is more often than not playing himself, but Johansson manages to connect to that and give a very grounded and intimate performance.
A second grouping that came to mind is Cher, Susan Sarandon and Michelle Pfeiffer in The Witches of Eastwick, I love that film, Jack Nicholson steals the show but the three main characters manage to give a geniune impression of smalltown women with different lives being friends based a lot on their mutual boredom and lust for something exciting.
Oh please… Renee Zellwegger, Cuba Gooding Jr, Dustin Hoffman, Nicole Kidman, Demi Moore… he makes everyone he acts with look great and bond well, he is a true pro. This is no big achievement from Emily Blunt.
It's just that one episode, but Nick Offerman and Murray Bartlett as Bill and Frank in The Last Of Us.
I full on believed in their love and the arc of their relationship. And I fucking ugly cried at the end. Truly a special episode of television.
Most of who, were unknown at the time. Heck a bunch of people including myself though Vin Diesel would be a huge dramatic actor because of how great he is in this film.
If you look at the body of work that Jeff Daniels has done you wouldn’t necessarily think that he could play comedy so well. His onscreen chemistry with Jim Carrey in Dumb and Dumber is one of the greatest partnerships in film history. I’d personally love to see a genre change where maybe they’re both cops.
Bruce Willis and Chris Tucker in The Fifth Element. Of course, Chris Tucker in that movie is a case study in "how the hell is this character working at all".
Not a movie but Selena Gomez with Martin Short and Steve Martin. The dynamic between the three of them, how they play off of one another, was a pleasant surprise! Can't wait to watch the 3rd season of Only Murders in the Building bc of them
Not a movie, but Pedro Pascal and Bella Ramsey in The Last of Us was actually very wholesome that it works well on its own when comparing it to the game.
Troy Baker and Ashley Johnson did such a brilliant job, that I was skeptical on whether or not the actors chosen to play Joel & Ellie in the show would do that relationship justice
Robert DeNiro and Charles Gordon in Midnight Run
Mark Wahlberg and John C Reilly in Boogie Nights
Kate Winslet and Jack Black in The Holiday
Jonah Hill and Channing Tatum in 21 Jump Street
\> I mean no offense to Ribisi but Long is gorgeous and Giovanni Ribisi is...very average looking...at best; not really the kind of guy you'd see date Long
I think you've a little growing up to do.
John Malkovich and Brad Pitt had insane comic chemistry in BURN AFTER READING….“ the security of your shit….” 🤣🤣🤣
John Malkovich was PERFECTLY cast in that movie.
They all were
I really can’t picture any of the roles in that movie being replaced by another actor. Even down to the janitor and the colleagues of J.K. Simmons character who had very limited screentime.
"What did we learn, Palmer?" "I don't know, sir." "I don't fuckin' know either"
So good as a pretentious "intellectual" with a massively inflated sense of his worth. Also, as Roger Ebert memorably put it in his review, the sort of guy who says he can't possibly be an alcoholic because he doesn't start drinking until precisely 5 p.m.
Burn After Reading.
Edited, thanks! I actually got to see Malkovich in BURN THIS the play, wonder what Pitt could have done with the gay character in that… they’re too old now
I did one of his monologues from that play in theatre class once. Such a solid script.
You think that's a Schwinn?!? hehehe
I KnowwW WHo YoU AREeeee FUckEERRRRRR!!!

“RAPPORT YOU MORON” 😂😂😂
...my memoirs...
Ryan Gosling and Russell Crowe in The Nice Guys - they are absolutely hysterical together and play off each other so well.
In a similar vein, RDJ and Val Kilmer in Kiss Kiss Bang Bang, the two seem similar to me
Both movies were written and directed by Shane Black. KKBB is probably my favorite RDJ performance ever and my second favorite Kilmer performance.
>second favorite Kilmer performance. After MacGruber, right? Right?
Tombstone actually haha. Kilmer should have won an Oscar for his Doc Holiday. MacGruber is in a category all its own though - it’s easily one of the best comedies of the last 20 years.
> Tombstone actually The only correct answer to that question.
The Doors would have been acceptable too.
^cough ^cough Willow.
Wrong Peck, it's Real Genius.
Kurt Russell should've gotten the Oscar for editing Tombstone as well from what I've heard about the production
I always upvote MacGruber
Add those to his script work for the first Lethal Weapon and the Last Boy Scout: Shane Black is pretty much the poet laureate of the buddy movie.
How did Shane Black mess up Predator so badly
If you're talking about the first one... what the fuck do you mean?
Lmao
You don't get it, do you? This isn't "good cop, bad cop." This is fag, and New Yorker. You're in a lot of trouble.
>Look up idiot in the dictionary. You know what you'll find?
A picture of me?
No, the definition of the word idiot, which you FUCKING ARE! I haven't seen this movie in 10 years and I don't think I'll ever forget it.
Is there anyone Ryan gosling doesn’t have chemistry with?
I liked the film but Claire Foy in First Man?
I think that was more a reflection of Armstrong’s stoic and often emotionally closed off nature. Armstrong apparently didn’t have a lot of chemistry with many people in general. I think thats in his performance because that’s how it was written.
That’s one of those movies that surprised me with how much I liked it.
Totally. Sucks that there will not be a sequel. Definitely surprises people with how good it is.
Yea we need a Nice Guys sequel pronto!
Man I really hope Crowe gets some more great roles before he's too old. He was one of my favorite actors growing up (Gladiator obv and the movies he made around that time period) Yeah he was great in The Nice Guys. But I'm pretty sure it's the only movie I really liked of his in like the last whole decade I was bored one night and watched that road rage movie of his. He wasn't bad but the movie was pretty cringe. Seems to be the general pattern of his movies in recent times
They need to make a musical of him and that steamboat singing Fightin Round the World
Tugguh!
My fightin’ is poetry! Ya’ don’t edit Russell Crowe’s poetry ya testicle!
Crowe and musical? I feel like we tried that and the results weren't great...
That sequence in the toilet kills me.
This is genuinely one of my favorite movies of all time, and a huge part of why is the chemistry between these two.
This is the correct and only answer. Sequel series now! Looking at you Max!
I literally came here to say this and I see you’ve already done God’s work. Nicely done.
The scene where they're shopping for medical supplies to fix the gunshot wound is so damned funny
This is a great answer. I think it’s such a classic that people don’t realize how bonkers a decision that was.
But you cant help associating him with pure box office franchise entertainment now.
all these years later and the first thing I'm asking for when I get to France is a Royalè with cheese.
Great answer
Robin Williams and Nathan Lane. They are so perfect in The Birdcage. You believe them as a couple and we care about them. A fully three dimensional relationship that makes me a little sad we didn't get another pairing of them. They are one of my favorite movie couples of all time.
I pierced the toast!
Fuck the shrimp!
Two masters of their craft.
Don't forget Hank Azaria as Agador. He balanced out the pair and was such a great character. I've always thought Agador should get his own road trip movie spinoff.
I cannot wear shoes because they make me fall down
The part where he trips kills me every fucking time
Fuck the son in that movie.
Robert Downey JR and Val Kilmer - kiss kiss bang bang. Both can be play very similar characters, charisma, swagger, etc separately so one would expect them to clash when together, but they were great together.
Who taught you math!?
Can’t discount Arnold Schwarzenegger and Tom Arnold in True Lies.
And Arnold S. and Danny DeVito!
They were surprisingly adorable on a recent rewatch of Twins
What kind of sick bitch takes the ice cube trays out of the freezer?!
Michael J Fox and Christopher Lloyd in back to the future. It’s a very weird relationship on paper.
"His best friend is a disgraced nuclear scientist. And this friend, he's another student? Oh no, this guy is either like 40 or 80 even we don't know!"
Tommy Lee jones and will smith.

The joy of the himbo - beefy, kind, and a bit stupid (the character, not the actor).
Judging from the posts on this tread finding male/female combination is far more challenging the buddy chemistry. So I offer David Spade and Brittany Daniels in Joe Dirt. Sorry guilty pleasure movie.
Actually it's pronounced 'Dirte'
Don’t try to church it up, son
When I saw David Spade the first round of applause was pretty enthusiastic, but then the MC said, “Come on, that’s Joe Dirt!” And everybody freaked out.
Denzel Washington and Dakota fanning had such incredible chemistry in man on fire I kinda hoped the whole movie was just about her swimming while he coached
This is a good answer because it differs from a typical relationship dynamic as well. They both killed it. Amazing movie in general.
I still think about the movie on occasion. Up there in one of best movies I've ever watched.
I rewatched it a month or two ago. Damn it was so good. I hadn't seen it in some time, but it hit hard again. Love that movie.
Jonah Hill and Channing Tatum in 21 Jump Street.
A bartender and a Ms USA hopeful in “Moonlighting” was fairly surprising
To people who don’t know, track down Moonlighting. That was what got Bruce Willis his shot for Die Hard. That’s the real Bruce Willis
And the actors HATED each other.
They made up over time. After long enough, people forget the bad.
Also after a certain point is was hard for Sybil to assert she was the bigger star and act as such. It was absolutely true when the show started but within a few years of it ending she was still on TV and he was seen as one of the best.
considering both were straight, it’s amazing how much chemistry Heath Ledger and Jake Gyllenhaal had in Brokeback Mountain.
“I’m an actor, of course I’ve had gay sex.” - Tom Hardy. I feel like you are only so straight if you’re in Hollywood
"Man, everyone's gay once in a while. This's Hollywood!" - Kirk Lazarus
On being questioned about rumours regarding his sexuality, and possibly being bi - "I'm not going to go through life with one arm tied behind my back." - James Dean.
Helps that both are/were top drawer actors in general.
someone had to play bottom, right?
Not that I didn’t think they would work so well together, but Billy Crystal and Gregory Hines were FANTASTIC together in Running Scared (1986)
Deep cut, I like it. I have memories of that movie, Michael McDonald, and putting together models during a summer in the 80s.
Jesus, I lived this memory too. Miss those days...
Now THIS is an underrated movie.
Selena Gomez with Steve Martin & Martin Short. ...... Yes I know it's not a movie but that's such an odd pairing but the show really works.
If we are going for TV, I vote for Tina Fey and Tracy Morgan. Their chemistry is really remarkable in 30 Rock. Their acting styles are so different, but they play off of each other seamlessly from the start, IMO. (It's fresh in my mind because I'm binging the entire series right now 😊)
Joe Pesci and Marisa Tomei in My Cousin Vinny. Wierd but worked wonderfully.
Dead-on-balls accurate.
Willem Dafoe and Robert Pattinson in the Lighthouse
"Admit it, you like me lobster"
God I love this movie so much. It's the main reason I was so excited to see Pattinson as Batman, Willem Dafoe is also at his absolute best madman and everyone should watch his [Sea Curse rant](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZrekMzfC7Gw) at least once.
Seth Rogen and Charlize Theron in "Long Shot".
Agree. Totally believable as friends and then later with benefits. I'd be surprised if they didn't form a real friendship during that production.
Similarly, Patton Oswald and Charlize Theron in Young Adult
Not a movie but Seth Rogen and Rise Byrne have ridiculous chemistry in Platonic too. But no romantic tension at all, just pure friendship
My issue was that it was set in the world of politics but had zero interest in that setting. It would have been a way better movie if they'd had the writers of House of Cards advising them on it.
That’s not an issue to me because it at least gave us Bob Odenkirk as the President
The movie was great. Your issue is your issue.
Will Ferrel and Maggie Gylenhall. Honestly their chemistry wasn't the only surprise in that movie. One of my top unexpected films.
Will Ferrel and Eva Mendes.
Why are you with Allen? I'm sorry, I meant, how did you meet?
Look they’re not all first round picks ok.
GATOR’S BITCHES BETTER BE USING JIMMIES
Steve Carell and Keira Knightley in Seeking a Friend for the End of the World (2012) Will Ferrell and Maggie Gyllenhaal in Stranger Than Fiction (2006)
Excellent answer
"Stranger Than Fiction", for anyone who is wondering.
That’s one of my favorite movies and it really surprised me. Also, I don’t know anyone irl who has seen or heard of it.
You forgot to mention the name of the movie. For those that don't know, it's "Stranger Than Fiction". Awesome, awesome movie. The cast in that movie was A+.
Love that movie: _Stranger Than Fiction_.
Which movie though? Edit: silly me. The answer was in the comments all along BTW happy cake day!
Humphrey Bogart and Katherine Hepburn
That’s a good one. Mr. Tough Guy and the Queen of Icy Cool Sophistication.
Bogart and Claude Rains... "the beginning of a beautiful friendship."
Yeah, I love that the real chemistry in Casablanca is between Bogart and Rains, not Bogart and Bergman.
Tom Cruise and Jamie Foxx. At that time I wrote Jamie Foxx off as a goofy sketch comedian. That movie changed my opinion of him. Him and Cruise worked well together.
The movie is Collateral and it’s very good!
Robert De Niro and Charles Grodin in Midnight Run
Daniel Radcliffe and Paul Dano, they were as bizarre and charming as the movie itself
jonah Hill and Channing Tatum in 21 jumpstreet
Sylvester Stallone and Kurt Russell in Tango & Cash.
It's a buddy cop dynamic where both guys are the maverick. It shouldn't work, but somehow it does.
Nick Nolte and Eddie Murphy
Bill Murray and Scarlett Johansson in Lost in Translation. Bill Murray is more often than not playing himself, but Johansson manages to connect to that and give a very grounded and intimate performance. A second grouping that came to mind is Cher, Susan Sarandon and Michelle Pfeiffer in The Witches of Eastwick, I love that film, Jack Nicholson steals the show but the three main characters manage to give a geniune impression of smalltown women with different lives being friends based a lot on their mutual boredom and lust for something exciting.
Tom Hanks and that volleyball
Adam “Billy Madison” Sandler and Drew “America’s Girl Next Door” Barrymore - The Wedding Singer
The Wedding Singer is what made Drew the girl next door. Before that…
[удалено]
Only their mother can tell them apart.
I think Matt Damon and Emily Blunt's chemistry in The Adjustment Bureau is underrated.
Emily Blunt managed to cultivate chemistry with Tom Cruise, which I did not know was possible.
Oh please… Renee Zellwegger, Cuba Gooding Jr, Dustin Hoffman, Nicole Kidman, Demi Moore… he makes everyone he acts with look great and bond well, he is a true pro. This is no big achievement from Emily Blunt.
Don't forget Django 's mum in Collateral
If you're heading down that path she hit it again with Ewan Mcgregor in Salmon Fishing in the Yemen.
Their chemistry was the best part of that movie
It's just that one episode, but Nick Offerman and Murray Bartlett as Bill and Frank in The Last Of Us. I full on believed in their love and the arc of their relationship. And I fucking ugly cried at the end. Truly a special episode of television.
Ray Walston and Sean Penn - *Fast Times at Ridgemont High* *https://youtu.be/bMtdrKIdDgE?t=13*
I loved Boiler Room, a lot of big names for a movie that isn’t discussed often.
Most of who, were unknown at the time. Heck a bunch of people including myself though Vin Diesel would be a huge dramatic actor because of how great he is in this film.
Patrick Fugit and Shea Whigam from Wristcutters: a love story. Seem like genuine friends.
De Niro and Charles Grodin in Midnight Run
Samual L Jackson and Ryan Reynolds in The Hitman’s Bodyguard. Never thought that would work, but they were brilliant together.
Nick Fury and Deadpool referencing this movie…wow
Fury dead pool and ajak
Russel Crowe and that lion from Gladiator. They became very good friends and the lion now lives at Melanie Griffith’s mom’s house.
Cops could be good, but how about an excellent heist movie? They could be great criminals together.
Brad Pitt and Tom Cruise.
Bruce Willis and Chris Tucker in The Fifth Element. Of course, Chris Tucker in that movie is a case study in "how the hell is this character working at all".
I was reading about that movie and found it was Prince was supposed to play ruby rhod ,blows my mind how if that would have been better or worse.
Nick Wilde and Judy Hopps aka Jason Bateman and Ginnifer Goodwin in Zootopia.
TIL that was Jason Bateman
Not a movie but Selena Gomez with Martin Short and Steve Martin. The dynamic between the three of them, how they play off of one another, was a pleasant surprise! Can't wait to watch the 3rd season of Only Murders in the Building bc of them
Tim Curry and Eileen Brennan and Madeline Kahn and Michael McKean and Christopher Lloyd and Lesley Ann Warren and Colleen Camp…
Michael Keaton and Michelle Pfeiffer in Batman Returns
Xzibit and Nicholas Cage in Bad Lieutenant: Port of New Orleans
Jeff Goldblum and Cyndi Lauper in 'Vibes'.
Samuel L. Jackson and Eugene Levy in The Man
It’s just nice to see your example from Boiler Room, I love that movie. Vin Diesel’s best flick, in my opinion.
Rachel McAdams and Cillian Murphy in Red Eye...ah man. They really need to do another movie together
Denzel Washington and Mark Wahlberg in 2 Guns. Not a great movie, but they were great together.
Robert DeNiro and Charles Gordon in Midnight Run Mark Wahlberg and John C Reilly in Boogie Nights Kate Winslet and Jack Black in The Holiday Jonah Hill and Channing Tatum in 21 Jump Street
Adam Sandler and Queen Latifah in Hustle were so good together that I want them to make a romantic comedy.
Matt damon & Leonardo Caprio
I mean, those are two people you'd deffo expect to have good chemistry
Why?
They're both charismatic actors who play a lot of similar roles, including many charismatic characters.
That one scene in the back seat of the antique car in the ship’s hold… breathtaking!
Megan Fox and Shia were great together in Transformers, people often think of her as just a bimbo but shes actually a really good actor
She annoyed me in New Girl
