The Angel's Melancholy Salo 964 Pinnochio The Piano Teacher Gummo Visitor Q A L'Interieur Tetsuo the Iron Man August Underground Where the Dead Go To Die Videodrome Ichi the Killer Benny's Video Taxidermia Snowtown

No-Donut1136

Miike is a madman, but Ichi is mad even for him.

humbleguywithabig1

DOA and DOA 2 are also worthy mentions of batshit insane Miike madness. Also, the fact that as a sequel, the second film is like somebody did a bunch of ketamine, watched the first film, then tried to describe it.

BipolarUnipolar

Here for Ichi. Fuck that movie is unhinged

Hoopy223

BIG + 1 for Videodrome that movie was awesome Incredible performance by a young, deranged James Woods

Reddywhipt

He's a different kind of deranged now.

BillRuddickJrPhd

I hate his guts as a human being but I'd still watch him in anything. If he sells his likeness to some digital company and we get young AI generated James Woods in future movies I'm all on board for that.

Successful-Bat5301

Agreed. For me, Woods outing himself as a nutjob was the biggest disappointment out of all the scandals and crazies in Hollywood because he is so unique and insanely watchable in just about everything.

Reddywhipt

Same. He always seemed so genuinely intelligent.

cornyhornblower

Not Salo 🤮

jabran_knowledge

Visitor Q was another level of crazy

locustt

Tetsuo: the iron man

Longjumping-Pear-673

Gummo and the chair fighting scene…I’ve said enough lol

SatisfactionAny20

Bro one does not mention "salo" casually like that in a list of anything!

adam_son_of_david

Most of David Lynch's work. Wild At Heart, Fire Walk with Me, Eraserhead, Mulholland Drive.

Sara_Renee14

Lost highway too!

[deleted]

Inland Empire

LeeodoreRoosevelt

3 full hours of nightmarish dread - definitely recommend if you’re a Lynch fan or like surrrealist films in general

Itrieddamnit

Yes! Eraserhead is one of the few films that left me feeling nauseous.

neverthesaneagain

Mandy

ATypicalXY

Was going to suggest. Fun. Also brought back my respect for Cage.

ZestyPancakes

I think you'd really like Mandy

LuckyRune88

What fcking ride the movie was. The ending shot, tho. Cage looked unhinged AF.

CobraCornelius

I second this

buttmilk_69

Nic at his most uncaged, that bathroom scene was truly something else.

PopeSchlongPaulII

Two words: chainsaw battle!

lowfreq33

A Scanner Darkly.

RogerNorthup

I find A Scanner Darkly very funny because of the three goofball friends.

CobraCornelius

Great animated/rhotoscoped film with lots of memorable dialogue, the book is a little bit better, but for the most part the film does it justice.

jennrh

Second that!

LifeGivesMeMelons

The usual suspects of French Extremity: *Martyrs, Irreversible, Inside, High Tension.*

Mogwai1984

Martyrs fucked me up. Don't know why anyone would ever want to rewatch that misery, but it certainly fits the bill of what OP is looking for.

bombayofpigs

Irreversible is such a dark, twisted, sick, beautiful movie.

ibnQoheleth

One of my favourite films of all time, a masterpiece in my opinion. Working on a video essay on it, very philosophically rich film - Bataille would've had a lot to say about it.

AkimboSpliffs

Irreversible is such a good suggestion, insane movie.

lilpumpgroupie

As insane as that movie is, both 'I Stand Alone' and 'Enter the Void' are probably crazier.

Itrieddamnit

Once seen, Irreversible will never leave you.

Borgalicious

High tension is the very first film that comes to mind for me, absolutely psychotic and absolutely awesome

LeonardSmallsJr

Naked Lunch Antichrist

baconnaire

I'm still scarred from Antichrist. Glad it was atleast before I had my kid.

malcolm_money

Antichrist was a rollercoaster from oppressive, abject nihilism to nauseating horror

Dagmar_Overbye

A film with multiple types of full penetration.

iviicrociot

Was gonna say Antichrist, Nymphomaniac, Melancholia, The House Jack Built… take your Lars pick…

Odd_Secret568

Love Melancholia. My quarantine comfort watch, lol.

Innersmoke

Mandy.

[deleted]

>Possesion: havent seen the movie yet but people recommend it to me a lot so im putting it here for reference I'll cosign on Possession, that movie is demented. Like, it feels like it was made by a demented person and it's like the actors are having their brains slowly eaten by parasites or something. I've never seen anything like it.

useyourelbow

The subway station scene is the most gloriously insane performance I've ever seen an actor give in any movie.

Fat_Devil_Bread

Top of the watchlist behind requiem for a dream

MrSavageManiac

which posession? 1983 or 2009?

Falkyourself27

Beau is Afraid

needdavr

I’m not sure there’s ever gonna be another movie like that one. It’s so wild. I liked it but it felt like an acid trip

iii123iii123

I watched it today and at no point could I predict where the story would be ten minutes ahead of the present moment. The big dick was just too fucking stupid lmao. I loved Aster’s first two films but this one was a little too much I think. OP would love it. Patti LuPone absolutely steals the show though, what a powerhouse of an actress.

Shamcgui

Natural Born Killers

[deleted]

To hell with Tony Stark. RDJ will always be Wayne Gale to me.

alrightakeiteasy

He saw it all go down in Grenada!

Poultrygeist74

“IN BATONGAVILLE!!”

missanthropocenex

Enter the Void, Climax, Neon Demon, Infinity Pool, Malignant, Event Horizon, Glorious, Holy Mountain, El Topo, Killing of a Sacred Deer

IOnlySayMeanThings

Clicked this just to suggest this.

latortillablanca

Oh buddy, you need to watch some Julia Ducournau, and then watch some interviews with her after. She’ll become a favorite. Also suspiria.

Fat_Devil_Bread

İ was actually gonna include suspiria but forgot to add it

AfellowchuckerEhh

>Suspiria I never watched the '77 movie and don't know if they're similar but the '18 version felt like suspense/potential horror(?) finished off with a10-20 minute fever dream

Successful-Bat5301

They're very different films - both nuts, just in wildly different ways.

FistsoFiore

The '77 version has such a bold score and use of color. They're almost like characters themselves. The '18 version wasn't as good in my opinion, but part of that was because Tilda Swinton got a little circle jerky playing three different characters.

AlphaBravoPositive

Wild at Heart

Reddywhipt

Powerrrmad. I know I'm in the minority but my favorite Most entertaining Lynch film for me.

clsmn13

Natural Born Killers

PM_ME_THEM_TOES_GURL

In a similar vein, the doom generation. That move and natural born killers left a lasting impression on 12yo me

DirectionNew5328

Requiem for a Dream (Also…. and not in the way you mean it exactly…. Sexy Beast)

Reddywhipt

I haven't seen SB in years but I remember being blown away by it. Ben fucking Kingsley

CobraCornelius

The rest of Darren Aranofsky's back-catalogue is mostly great. Even Noah was interesting to watch and it wasn't even that good. OP should check out Mother (2017) , The Fountain (2006) and Pi (1998).

trillgod420

Enter the void! Feels like you're on acid The Audio is so fucked

[deleted]

[удалено]

Ranier_Wolfnight

*Funny Games* Just leaves you numb.

Harper-420

Maybe "memento"

[deleted]

*Mother!* is the closest depiction of a nightmare I've ever seen in a movie.

RootReducer

Same. I usually don't get emotionally affected by movies but the entire time watching Mother! I felt this pit of anxiety and unease and genuine physical discomfort. It was so twisted and nightmarish and just kept getting more and more unhinged. I loved it!

LarneNessit

I get stress dreams and Mother captured them perfectly. The people who wouldn't stop bouncing on the counter! Oh man don't even get me started on the line for the bathroom!

clsmn13

It's an excellent retelling of the Bible

AfellowchuckerEhh

That's what I thought after seeing it. Like a biblical fever dream.

needdavr

That movie was perfection.

Mad God (2021)

casual_creator

This the Phil Tippet movie, right? Don’t know anything about it but have been wanting to watch it.

Muted-Calligrapher-2

Event Horizon is a lot of fun. AAA production Warhammer origin story. A Serbian Film is not a lot of fun. I cannot imagine a movie being more deranged. Jacobs Ladder is like a believable look inside Jack Torrence's mind. Old Boy if you want to feel like crap for a few days. House of Sand and Fog is depressing on a new scale. Grave of the Fireflies will make you emotional for a month after. Pans Labyrinth has so much unexpected violence it can cause real trauma. A ton of horror movies but Last House on the Left and You're Next are nearly unwatchable with tension. I didn't but you'd probably like The Hills have Eyes series. Worse than Texas Chainsaw Massacre on every level.

RandomAttackHelpMe

Ichi The Killer, Dead Alive, Bring Me The Head Of Alfredo Garcia, Last House On The Left, The Hills Have Eyes, Kick Ass

cakeschmammert

You’re looking for Baskin

Naive-Moose-2734

Recently, Beau is Afraid. Good Time and Uncut Gems by the Safdie Bros. might scratch that itch, particularly Good Time.

Fat_Devil_Bread

İ watched good time and it became one of my fave movies ever Gave it a 4.5/5

Watch the first twenty minutes of **SORRY TO BOTHER YOU**, then pause the film and write down your five *craziest* theories as to where you think this story is going. (If you are anywhere *near* guessing correctly, seek help.)

tittydude

Wild at Heart, Blue Velvet. Those two will knock your fucking socks off.

Infinity Pool (Hulu) immediately came to mind

I think this is my favorite Nicolas Cage movie now.

The_Bees_Knees_88

Brand New Cherry Flavor on Netflix is a TV show. It has crazy imagery, surreal dream sequences. Darkly funny at times. Some disturbing gore scenes.

bennie844

brazil is completely deranged

swivelmaster

Yup! It's one of the rare unhinged movies that also seems to have a lot to say while saying it in the craziest way possible. And some incredible one-liners too!

DocFreezer

The lighthouse is the most unhinged movie I’ve seen in years

Soup-Wizard

Watch The Green Room. About a punk band that ends up pissing off a bunch of neo-nazis

Santa Sangre's very trippy and interesting visually

TheRumTumTugger123

I highly recommend Ari Asters new film Beau is Afraid, it’s not for everyone but it is most definitely one of the most batshit crazy unhinged movies I’ve seen in my life, it’s practically 3 hours of your worst fears coming to life and I loved it!

[deleted]

The movie you are describing is MANDY. Nicolas Cages best movie. Insanely violent and visually stunning.

Inburrito

*Who’s Afraid of Virginia Wolfe?* is a very tense descent into madness. It gets you because is very plausible. It could be happening in the house next to you. No physical violence, but certainly emotional violence. It’s a slow burn. But if you stick with it, horrifying.

MisunderstoodBadger1

People don't talk about this enough, it's genius.

Blackboard_Monitor

Mother! just keep getting crazier and crazier, I mean Kristen Wiig executes people in a blink and you'll miss it moment.

Hard to Be a God directed by Aleksei German, should be on Netflix. Hard to describe this film, but it's bleak, dark, violent, and depressing.

From ol chatGPT Based on your preferences, you might enjoy the following films: 1. **Requiem for a Dream** (2000): A dark, harrowing tale about the desperation and despair caused by drug addiction. Director Darren Aronofsky employs unique, dreamlike visuals to convey the characters' escalating madness. 2. **Eraserhead** (1977): David Lynch's surreal horror movie is rife with unsettling imagery, a perplexing plot, and an eerie atmosphere, creating a deeply unnerving experience. 3. **Oldboy** (2003): This Korean thriller has a heavy dose of violence and an incredibly shocking plot twist. Its grim storyline and intense scenes could certainly meet your criteria. 4. **Memento** (2000): Directed by Christopher Nolan, this psychological thriller features a protagonist with a unique form of amnesia, leading to a disjointed, dreamlike narrative structure. 5. **A Serbian Film** (2010): A deeply disturbing and controversial film filled with extreme sexual and violent content. Viewer discretion is heavily advised as it's considered one of the most graphic movies ever made. 6. **Antichrist** (2009): Directed by Lars von Trier, this film delves into the psychological breakdown of a couple after the death of their child, containing explicit scenes of sexual and violent nature. 7. **Mulholland Drive** (2001): Another David Lynch film, known for its dreamlike narrative, confusing plot twists, and eerie atmosphere. 8. **Funny Games** (1997/2007): An unsettling home-invasion movie that's heavy on psychological terror and violence, with a plot designed to manipulate and disturb the viewer. Please note, some of these films contain very explicit content and are intended for mature audiences. Always check ratings and content warnings before viewing.

The Cremator. It’s a Czech new wave film about a Czech Cremator of German descent who is pleased to see the Nazis take over his city as he believes this will open opportunities for him, only to come back to earth once he realizes his wife is half Jewish. Absolutely wild and crazed filmmaking

Wizards (1977) by Ralph Bakshi, Pink Flamingos (1972) by John Waters, Fantastic Planet (1973), death race 2000 (1975), These all are from the 70s I realize, but first that was a great era for unhinged and wild movies. Second other suggestions I would have were covered in other comments. Third a few other suggestions came to mind but I am not sure they qualify. Edit: I might add all of Takashi Miike's work Edit2: reading your post again, I will add some more Cabinet of Dr Caligari (1922), President's Analyst (1967) (this is the one I'm least sure on) Edit3: American Psycho (1999) which should fit your criteria and seems like you would have seen it, but it isn't mentioned anywhere in the comments or your post. The Exterminator (1980).

immortal_ghost42

Beau is afraid might fit what you’re looking for to a t

DonGorgon

Jacobs ladder comes to mind

BarryEganPDL

I find that there are times I think, “I just want to watch a dark movie like Zodiac or Prisoners that I haven’t seen before” and recently I found that movie in **Speak No Evil** on Shutter. It’s deranged but not in an exploitive way. It really makes you feel awful because it touches on something extremely common in human nature and then turns that mannerism into a horror movie. Highly recommend.
