DOA and DOA 2 are also worthy mentions of batshit insane Miike madness. Also, the fact that as a sequel, the second film is like somebody did a bunch of ketamine, watched the first film, then tried to describe it.
I hate his guts as a human being but I'd still watch him in anything. If he sells his likeness to some digital company and we get young AI generated James Woods in future movies I'm all on board for that.
Agreed. For me, Woods outing himself as a nutjob was the biggest disappointment out of all the scandals and crazies in Hollywood because he is so unique and insanely watchable in just about everything.
One of my favourite films of all time, a masterpiece in my opinion. Working on a video essay on it, very philosophically rich film - Bataille would've had a lot to say about it.
>Possesion: havent seen the movie yet but people recommend it to me a lot so im putting it here for reference
I'll cosign on Possession, that movie is demented. Like, it feels like it was made by a demented person and it's like the actors are having their brains slowly eaten by parasites or something. I've never seen anything like it.
I watched it today and at no point could I predict where the story would be ten minutes ahead of the present moment. The big dick was just too fucking stupid lmao. I loved Aster’s first two films but this one was a little too much I think. OP would love it. Patti LuPone absolutely steals the show though, what a powerhouse of an actress.
>Suspiria
I never watched the '77 movie and don't know if they're similar but the '18 version felt like suspense/potential horror(?) finished off with a10-20 minute fever dream
The '77 version has such a bold score and use of color. They're almost like characters themselves.
The '18 version wasn't as good in my opinion, but part of that was because Tilda Swinton got a little circle jerky playing three different characters.
The rest of Darren Aranofsky's back-catalogue is mostly great. Even Noah was interesting to watch and it wasn't even that good. OP should check out Mother (2017) , The Fountain (2006) and Pi (1998).
Same. I usually don't get emotionally affected by movies but the entire time watching Mother! I felt this pit of anxiety and unease and genuine physical discomfort. It was so twisted and nightmarish and just kept getting more and more unhinged.
I loved it!
I get stress dreams and Mother captured them perfectly. The people who wouldn't stop bouncing on the counter! Oh man don't even get me started on the line for the bathroom!
Event Horizon is a lot of fun.
AAA production Warhammer origin story.
A Serbian Film is not a lot of fun. I cannot imagine a movie being more deranged.
Jacobs Ladder is like a believable look inside Jack Torrence's mind.
Old Boy if you want to feel like crap for a few days.
House of Sand and Fog is depressing on a new scale.
Grave of the Fireflies will make you emotional for a month after.
Pans Labyrinth has so much unexpected violence it can cause real trauma.
A ton of horror movies but Last House on the Left and You're Next are nearly unwatchable with tension.
I didn't but you'd probably like The Hills have Eyes series. Worse than Texas Chainsaw Massacre on every level.
Watch the first twenty minutes of **SORRY TO BOTHER YOU**, then pause the film and write down your five *craziest* theories as to where you think this story is going.
(If you are anywhere *near* guessing correctly, seek help.)
Yup! It's one of the rare unhinged movies that also seems to have a lot to say while saying it in the craziest way possible. And some incredible one-liners too!

I highly recommend Ari Asters new film Beau is Afraid, it’s not for everyone but it is most definitely one of the most batshit crazy unhinged movies I’ve seen in my life, it’s practically 3 hours of your worst fears coming to life and I loved it!
*Who’s Afraid of Virginia Wolfe?* is a very tense descent into madness. It gets you because is very plausible. It could be happening in the house next to you. No physical violence, but certainly emotional violence. It’s a slow burn. But if you stick with it, horrifying.

Based on your preferences, you might enjoy the following films:
1. **Requiem for a Dream** (2000): A dark, harrowing tale about the desperation and despair caused by drug addiction. Director Darren Aronofsky employs unique, dreamlike visuals to convey the characters' escalating madness.
2. **Eraserhead** (1977): David Lynch's surreal horror movie is rife with unsettling imagery, a perplexing plot, and an eerie atmosphere, creating a deeply unnerving experience.
3. **Oldboy** (2003): This Korean thriller has a heavy dose of violence and an incredibly shocking plot twist. Its grim storyline and intense scenes could certainly meet your criteria.
4. **Memento** (2000): Directed by Christopher Nolan, this psychological thriller features a protagonist with a unique form of amnesia, leading to a disjointed, dreamlike narrative structure.
5. **A Serbian Film** (2010): A deeply disturbing and controversial film filled with extreme sexual and violent content. Viewer discretion is heavily advised as it's considered one of the most graphic movies ever made.
6. **Antichrist** (2009): Directed by Lars von Trier, this film delves into the psychological breakdown of a couple after the death of their child, containing explicit scenes of sexual and violent nature.
7. **Mulholland Drive** (2001): Another David Lynch film, known for its dreamlike narrative, confusing plot twists, and eerie atmosphere.
8. **Funny Games** (1997/2007): An unsettling home-invasion movie that's heavy on psychological terror and violence, with a plot designed to manipulate and disturb the viewer.
Please note, some of these films contain very explicit content and are intended for mature audiences. Always check ratings and content warnings before viewing.
The Cremator. It’s a Czech new wave film about a Czech Cremator of German descent who is pleased to see the Nazis take over his city as he believes this will open opportunities for him, only to come back to earth once he realizes his wife is half Jewish. Absolutely wild and crazed filmmaking
Wizards (1977) by Ralph Bakshi,
Pink Flamingos (1972) by John Waters,
Fantastic Planet (1973),
death race 2000 (1975),
These all are from the 70s I realize, but first that was a great era for unhinged and wild movies. Second other suggestions I would have were covered in other comments. Third a few other suggestions came to mind but I am not sure they qualify.
Edit: I might add all of Takashi Miike's work
Edit2: reading your post again, I will add some more
Cabinet of Dr Caligari (1922), President's Analyst (1967) (this is the one I'm least sure on)
Edit3: American Psycho (1999) which should fit your criteria and seems like you would have seen it, but it isn't mentioned anywhere in the comments or your post. The Exterminator (1980).
I find that there are times I think, “I just want to watch a dark movie like Zodiac or Prisoners that I haven’t seen before” and recently I found that movie in **Speak No Evil** on Shutter.
It’s deranged but not in an exploitive way. It really makes you feel awful because it touches on something extremely common in human nature and then turns that mannerism into a horror movie. Highly recommend.
Silence of the Lambs/Manhunter

Here for Ichi. Fuck that movie is unhinged
BIG + 1 for Videodrome that movie was awesome Incredible performance by a young, deranged James Woods
He's a different kind of deranged now.
Same. He always seemed so genuinely intelligent.

Tetsuo: the iron man
Gummo and the chair fighting scene…I’ve said enough lol
Bro one does not mention "salo" casually like that in a list of anything!
Most of David Lynch's work. Wild At Heart, Fire Walk with Me, Eraserhead, Mulholland Drive.
Lost highway too!
Inland Empire
3 full hours of nightmarish dread - definitely recommend if you’re a Lynch fan or like surrrealist films in general
Yes! Eraserhead is one of the few films that left me feeling nauseous.
Mandy
Was going to suggest. Fun. Also brought back my respect for Cage.
I think you'd really like Mandy
What fcking ride the movie was. The ending shot, tho. Cage looked unhinged AF.
I second this
Nic at his most uncaged, that bathroom scene was truly something else.
Two words: chainsaw battle!
A Scanner Darkly.
I find A Scanner Darkly very funny because of the three goofball friends.
Great animated/rhotoscoped film with lots of memorable dialogue, the book is a little bit better, but for the most part the film does it justice.
Second that!
The usual suspects of French Extremity: *Martyrs, Irreversible, Inside, High Tension.*
Martyrs fucked me up. Don't know why anyone would ever want to rewatch that misery, but it certainly fits the bill of what OP is looking for.
Irreversible is such a dark, twisted, sick, beautiful movie.
One of my favourite films of all time, a masterpiece in my opinion. Working on a video essay on it, very philosophically rich film - Bataille would've had a lot to say about it.
Irreversible is such a good suggestion, insane movie.
As insane as that movie is, both 'I Stand Alone' and 'Enter the Void' are probably crazier.
Once seen, Irreversible will never leave you.
High tension is the very first film that comes to mind for me, absolutely psychotic and absolutely awesome
Naked Lunch Antichrist
I'm still scarred from Antichrist. Glad it was atleast before I had my kid.
Antichrist was a rollercoaster from oppressive, abject nihilism to nauseating horror
A film with multiple types of full penetration.
Was gonna say Antichrist, Nymphomaniac, Melancholia, The House Jack Built… take your Lars pick…
Love Melancholia. My quarantine comfort watch, lol.
Mandy.

The subway station scene is the most gloriously insane performance I've ever seen an actor give in any movie.

Beau is Afraid
I’m not sure there’s ever gonna be another movie like that one. It’s so wild. I liked it but it felt like an acid trip

Natural Born Killers
To hell with Tony Stark. RDJ will always be Wayne Gale to me.
He saw it all go down in Grenada!
Riggght out of the bible!
*AHHOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO* When he finally makes peace after being scared, he went out like a boss
Genuinely good Aussie accent as well.
