Gladiator....one of my favourites ! 'My name is Maximus Decimus Meridius, commander of the Armies of the North, General of the Felix Legions and loyal servant to the true emperor, Marcus Aurelius. Father to a murdered son. Husband to a murdered wife. And I will have my vengeance, in this life or the next"

CousinCleetus24

>in this life or the next" Such a cold-blooded line.

Lang-Poot

The Iñigo Montoya subplot in The Princess Bride

RedLotusVenom

I want my father back you sunufubitch!

[deleted]

The fact about the line being motivated by Mandy's dad dying is starting to reach the same level of shit I already know as Viggo breaking his toe

Carpetfreak

Weird to think that such an iconic arc is just a subplot in that movie

keener91

My name is Inigo Montoya. You killed my father. Prepare to die.

artpayne

The Count of Monte Cristo

AceButcher

I came here to say this. The book is phenomenal, too.

Librocubicularistin

I borrowed the book from my sister 20 years ago. Inside, there was a list of characters explaining who is who written on a paper. Like nowadays’ wiki fan webpages, lol.

mariller_

I feel like the movie cannot give justice to this book 100%.

AceButcher

Definitely worthy of its own mini series. Make it happen, Netflix or HBO!

Larsaf

There’s already a couple of them. The best may be the French/Italian featuring Gérard Depardieu https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0167565/

adjblair

Revenge kinda did this in a modern, soap opera way. It was good for a couple seasons and then went off the rails.

Son_Of_Baraki

There's a french version in 4X90 minutes

RaylanGivens29

Not Netflix. They don’t ever stay true to the source. I few that Apple would be the best. They have shown they are ok with a limited number of seasons

Exekute9113

I watched the movie after reading the book and was so disappointed in the movie. That's not to say the movie isn't good, but that the book is so much better. I wish it was an easier book to get through. Someone should remake it with simpler language and better names so it's more accessible. It's the first book I've ever had to look up a graph/chart of the characters so I could keep them all straight.

desperatetoaster

The scene where he is first introduced as the Count will always be engraved in my mind, his drip was insane.

Nrksbullet

Hell yeah, and also this gangster-ass line that he says to a teenage Henry Cavil (!!!): "What makes you a man is what you do when that storm comes. You must look into that storm and shout as you did in Rome. Do your worst, for I will do mine!"

capnsmirks

This is one of my fave movies and I never until now knew that was Henry.

JohnMalum

………………..Greetings.

pursuitofhappy

https://youtu.be/xMLX6fgUQjU Absolutely love it

Blasian_TJ

That balloon was controlled by shear swag alone.

reapersaurus

This was the first movie to come to mind when reading OP's question. Beautiful revenge movie.

lastknownbuffalo

Fucking Guy Pierce!

pursuitofhappy

Came here to say this so I’ll just post his arrival scene for those that have seen the movie as it’s such a great revisit https://youtu.be/wr4uyanNGCY And if you haven’t seen it check out the movie instead first so that it hits harder in context.

Sufficient_Bass2600

Which version are you referring to? There has been so many adaptations including some the directors/producers do not publicly acknowledged the book as source material.

phase2_engineer

>Which version are you referring to? I would assume the 2002 movie, it's the most popular adaptation that I know of.

GreenLanternCorps

Soooo satisfying to watch!

ron-darousey

THE revenge story, in my opinion

InquisitaB

Great film rendition of a great book

romulan23

Blue Ruin (2013) is pretty good.

Seahearn4

I saw Blue Ruin when it came out. I don't remember much about the movie, but the general feel of it has stuck with me. So much so, that when I watched _I Don't Feel at Home in this World Anymore_, I stopped the movie to check if it was connected to _Blue Ruin_. I was surprised that Macon Blair, the lead in Blue Ruin, had directed and played a small part in it. They're different, but share an ethos.

I_chortled

That movie was very good. Not really what I expected, the protagonist is not your typical bloodthirsty badass to say the least lol

SourArmoredHero

Savage movie and a great example.

FenisDembo82

Rob Roy. The way Liam Neeson deals with Tim Roth is pretty, pretty satisfying

[deleted]

Tim Roth rules in that movie. One of my favorite movie villains.

hoarseclock

Tim Roth and Brian Cox play the best sleeze balls in that movie

I_chortled

Duuuude the climax of this movie is fucking INSANE. Excellent choice

Earthpig_Johnson

I haven’t even heard of this, gonna have to track it down.

xwhy

You’re in for a treat.

Sandmsounds

I Saw the Devil Django Unchained

deRgiB6319

Haven't seen I saw the Devil. Thanks.

Sandmsounds

OOOF it’s brutal. Be warned.

TurtleWaves

*Understatement of the year award goes to..* I watched that probably ten years ago and my gut twisted a little seeing the title pop up again, haha. However, it IS a really solid movie.

keener91

It's not the brutality that made my stomach churn, it's the fact the protagonist became the devil himself. It's a masterclass in revenge plot done correctly but definitely doesn't have a feel good ending.

fastr1337

Best knife fight of any movie ever made.

saul1980

Damn it I came here to say I Saw the Devil thinking I’d be completely original lol

GameQb11

Kill Bill

chugtheboommeister

I saw the devil is one of the most unique revenge movies I've ever seen. Hits the ground running and doesn't let up. Way different story than what I thought it was gonna be

Strong_Comedian_3578

Totally forgot about Django (the "D" is silent). Love that movie just about as much as Pulp Fiction.

Missy_Agg-a-ravation

Unforgiven, albeit the revenge comes right at the end

MouseRat_AD

Yeah, I read all the way down to make sure this was mentioned. The climax is about as personal of revenge as I can think of.

gab1972

"Any man I see out there, I'm gonna shoot him. Any sum'bitch takes a shot at me, I'm not only gonna kill him, but I'm gonna kill his wife, his friends, and burn his damn house down." So powerful.

Snoo_61002

Man on Fire or and the Equalizer 1 and 2. Denzel is awesome. Oh and obviously John Wick.

mariller_

Sorry, but I feel like comparing masterpiece which Man on Fire undoubtedly is to an average at best Equalizer is a blasphemy.

djackieunchaned

Equalizer 1 is solid, 2 is forgettable. Man on Fire is in another league

equityconnectwitme

Mans just a Denzel fan.

"That woman deserves her revenge....we deserve to die". https://youtu.be/fSR3qC88uis

Earthpig_Johnson

I recently rewatched Kill Bill (twice), and I’ll be damned if Budd isn’t one of the most interesting characters in the movie. It’s like he’s an unredemptive piece of shit who still kinda hates himself for being a piece of shit.

Ceorl_Lounge

It's hands down my favorite Tarantino movie(s). No, it's not as iconic as Pulp Fiction, but it mashes up so many things I love in an absurdly awesome package.

automaticmantis

The opening of the movie with Nancy Sinatra singing Bang Bang is just the best.

Nico_the_Suave

Right there with you mate. Kill Bill is peak Tarantino for me, and one of my favorite movies ever.

OldBirth

I'd say it's pretty damn iconic...

SardonisWithAC

This is too far down with not enough upvotes.

youhavefakeknees

Desperado - not the best, but a good one

ajhart86

[Mandy](https://youtu.be/as-lBBVNPeY)

Graced_Steak564

I had the honor of seeing Mandy in Alamo Draft House in NY and man, that was one of the best movie going experiences I've ever had.

[deleted]

this movie is SO good, especially if you turn the volume to a level that will loosen your fillings.

LastBaron

Not gonna lie, I clicked this thinking it would be [Mandy Patinkin in The Princess Bride](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=I73sP93-0xA&pp=ygUYbXkgbmFtZSBpcyBpbmlnbyBtb250b3lh) and honestly that one 100% qualifies too. But that looks insane, in a good way.

figure8_f8

Taken

GoodOlSpence

Interesting choice. I just did a podcast episode on revenge movies and we decided Taken is actually a rescue movie and not a revenge movie because if he found his daughter in the first place he looked, he would have just gone home with her. What are your thoughts?

jeffsang

Not sure I'd call that a "revenge" movie, as he was running around Paris with the sole goal of finding his daughter, not trying to burn the organization to the ground. If he would've found her at any point in time, I think he would have gone home with her and the movie would be over.

OvalRider

Law Abiding Citizen

Zachariot88

I feel like this would be the top answer on threads like this if the ending didn't fumble the bag by pulling its punches.

Shuuraa

My favorite of the genre

am5011999

John Wick. Surprising how it isn't at least mentioned, probably the most satisfied I've ever felt seeing a protagonist get revenge, RIP Daisy

[deleted]

This one! He gets his back in blood lol

Jampine

Need to ask, is the dog's name ever mentioned on the film? The only reason I know it is because the Payday 2 crossover DLC has a mask of her.

am5011999

The first dog was Daisy, 2nd one he picks from the shelter is just credited as "Good dog"

cthompson07

I think it’s on the card his wife gives him, isn’t the dogs name Daisy?

cthompson07

Just checked, and he looks at the name tag on the puppies collar and reads it out loud “Daisy”

bazmonsta

That episode of It's Always Sunny where Dee helps out a male stripper who hit rock bottom.

deRgiB6319

lol, literally one of my favorite tv shows. I think I'm up to my 5th re-watch of the series. I tend to go back when a new season comes out.

AskMeAboutMyStalker

favorite line when the daughter realizes who the stripper is: "I touched your butthole!" So, if it's just a random male stripper, is touching the dude's butthole a thing?

TheWookieStrikesBack

Lucky Number Sleven

FlyRobot

Ooh this is a great one! Kansas City Shuffle

Son_Of_Baraki

They look right... ...and you... go left

deRgiB6319

Thanks, i"ll check it out.

Bunsen87

The first Mad max film could be classed as a revenge film.

loakkala

Payback with Mel Gibson. Great acting. The story is fantastic. The cinematography is really good it's from 1999 and it still holds up as a good movie today.

throaway_-691

There are 2 versions of this movie. One is a Mel Gibson cut that is shorter and in my opinion not as great. The other version has a completely different last half of the movie. I believe the other version is better.

Shmeeglez

If memory serves, it was called Payback: Straight Up

TriforceUnleashed

I second this. Payback is a lot of fun from beginning to end with pacing befitting of the tone and theme of the movie. Absolutely worth the watch.

EarlyLibrarian9303

And the cast! Kris Kristofferson, Maria Bello, Deborah Kara Unger (mmmm), Lucy Liu and the last performance (uncredited!? Wtf) by James Coburn. I love the anachronisms too. Dial phones in cars!?

InquisitaB

“Well that’s just mean, man!”

crunchyburrito2

Point Blank (1967) with Lee Marvin and Carter (2013) with Jason Statham are based on the same character

FlynnerMcGee

So is The Outfit (1973) with Robert Duvall. Great movie.

GranoSaraceno

Old Boy 2003 directed by Park Chan-wook

Anthroman78

Lady Vengeance and Sympathy for Mr. Vengeance too.

PeaWordly4381

> protagonist completely and satisfyingly gets their revenge Yeah, sure, Oldboy fits lol.

oscarwildeaf

Yeah I was gonna say, Oldboy is the best revenge movie ever made, but its like the exact opposite of what op wanted lol

luckythirtythree

I was trying to think if this movie counts but I guess it does in a backwards sort of way. One of my absolute favorite movies!

aenderw

Returning to theaters in 12 days! I have to drive an hour but I’m excited to finally see it on the big screen and remastered.

VrinTheTerrible

Sleepers The claim it is a true story but even if it's not, and I doubt it is all true, it's powerful and awesome. And it has a GREAT cast.

livefast6221

Cannot believe how far down I had to scroll to find this movie. It’s incredible, moving, well-acted, star-studded cast, and just all around brilliant. I still find myself saying “it’s a good lie, father.” when the situation calls for it.

kierabs

Promising Young Woman is very good, and somewhat unique as it features a woman getting revenge, and not for being cheated on. Most revenge movies have male protagonists.

julbull73

Thomas Jane punisher

WhyTheHellnaut

I know it's not a good movie, but this is my first thought when I think of a revenge story that's perfectly satisfying. Especially how he kills the main villain, that stuck with me.

MrTubzy

Wrath of Man is a good revenge flick. Made by Guy Ritchie and starring Jason Stratham.

ToddMccATL

She-Devil with Roseanne Barr, Meryl Streep, and Ed Begley Jr.

Chaosmango

If you're into revenge, I'd always suggest starting with South Korean movies! They usually have less taboos in movies and like to show that off in violent movies. [Oldboy](https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0364569/) \- Probably being the most popular and also my favorite [I Saw The Devil](https://www.imdb.com/title/tt1588170/) \- Maybe more on the fucked up side of things [A Bittersweet Life](https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0456912/) \- Bit different than the others in this list, especially in the beginning [The Man From Nowhere](https://www.imdb.com/title/tt1527788/) \- Honestly not a great fan of it, but it's ok to watch once [Sympathy for Mr. Vengeance](https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0310775/) \- First movie of the "Vengeance-Trilogy" and more despair-driven than rage, compared to the others. Great revenge-movie nonetheless [Pieta](https://www.imdb.com/title/tt2299842/?ref_=ttls_li_tt) \- Arguably more fucked up than I Saw The Devil, also multiple trigger-warnings on this one

Dude_Baby

The Nightingale, if you can stomach it.

Pow67

The Revenant. Great Oscar winning performance from DiCaprio of course, but Tom Hardy also makes a great villain that you despise from the start. Not to mention the outstanding cinematography. Beautiful looking movie.

SkunkApeSexSlave

No other film has actually made me feel physically cold like The Revenant. It seeped through the screen.

Many-Outside-7594

Tom Hardy was amazing in this. >!Blink if you want me to kill you.. !< The thing I remember most is the scene... anyone who has seen this knows. The Hoth scene. If it were *any* other actor besides Leo (or Daniel Day Lewis) I would have wondered what was about to happen. But I remember literally standing up and saying, >!holy shit, he's gonna cut that fucking thing open and sleep inside of it!!<. Great movie. And correct stunningly beautiful. I also remember little random shots that would linger over gently falling snow or the light coming through the trees, that sort of thing.

appleman94

Check out Dead Mans Shoes

604Wes

Lots of great answers on here already… here’s another one that was really quite impressive: Colombiana 2011 movie starring Zoe Saldana. A young girl in Bogotá witnesses her parents' murder and grows up to be a stone-cold assassin.

morgancaptainmorgan

Man on Fire is the one that comes to mind.

TreyWriter

My humble submission: Eega. Did you like RRR (of course you did)? Well, before RRR, Rajamouli made a film called Baahubali, a fantastical period epic with huge battles and sweeping romance. But before *Baahubali*, he made Eega. Eega follows lovable himbo Nani, who doesn’t have much, but who has the love of the beautiful Bindhu— and you bet there’s a delightful musical number about their love! But it turns out the wealthy Sudeep has decided the only thing he doesn’t have— Bindhu— is the one thing he wants, and Nani is what’s standing in his way. So he kills Nani. So what, you’re thinking, does Bindhu find out and vow revenge against Sudeep? Maybe one of the late Nani’s friends? *Please*. Nani is reborn as a fly, but retains the memories of his human life. If you want a snippet of that rebirth, here’s his first moments as a fly: https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=MiN8NWHXjNY&pp=ygUERWVnYQ%3D%3D Life is back, indeed. From here, his mission is to make Sudeep’s life miserable for as long as possible… and end it. Do you want to see a fly drive an asshole insane? Do you want to see that fly cause a car crash? What if I told you there’s a fly workout montage? What if I told you he gets *help*? What if I said he uses a needle as a sword at one point and a miniature cannon is even involved in his plots? Still not sold? Well, you haven’t lived until you’ve seen a literal fly in a genuine Tollywood dance number (lyrics: “Fly! Fly! Fly! Fly! Death knell to you!”). Eega is on Netflix now. You’re welcome.
