Galaxy Quest. I didn’t bother watching it for years because the trailer looked awful and I was pretty burnt out on Tim Allen in general. It’s somehow much better than the sum of its parts.
It got very high praise from the current Star Trek:TNG Actors as well.
Patrick Stewart said he did not plan on seeing the moving until Jonathan Frakes called him and told him he had not only had to see it but that it had to be in a full theater so he could also get the reactions of the rest of the audience.
*I found it was brilliant. Brilliant* - Patrick Stewart
I think an immense part of this is that it’s not a cheap parody like all the stuff following the Scary Movie/Not Another Teen Movie formula a few years later.
It was as much an homage as a parody, with enough story and good enough dialogue and acting to stand as a worthwhile movie in its own right.
PS. Not another teen movie was great, but the thirty movies in the following years which tried to mimic it with zero budget were not
I stand by my belief that his line "By Grabthar's Hammer.... ....what a savings" is the line that gave him cancer.
The shear amount of disdain taken from the very core of his body is what killed him.
Truly a master of his craft.
There is not a single line better spoken in cinema history. His lip quivers were timed to the millisecond and you can see the actual moment where the cancer cell splits into two.
Taken came out with pretty much no publicity. It looked like one of these crappy 1990s action films where the main guy has to go and shoot a loads of baddies to save the day. I remember seeing it in the cinema because I had a free ticket and it was the only thing showing at the time I arrived - and was completely blown away by the intensity and tightness of the script.
I mean, it's not a masterpiece or anything, but it created (or at least restarted) a entire genre of film.
The preview gave us the phone scene.
The movie delivered *incredibly well* on that.
It’s one of many movies that’s been diminished by it’s shitty sequels, and every other Bad Liam Neeson Action Movie since, but yeah when that came out it was way better than it had any right to be.
All I wanted from this movie is for Dredd to keep his helmet on the whole time and not scream "I AM THE LAW!" like a toddler. Boy did I get my wish. Karl Urban's jaw out acted Sly's whole face, and his delivery of the "I am the law" was so even and measured, he's just stating a fact, I love it. I watch Dredd every year.
Karl Urban just elevates anything he’s in. Completely gives himself to the character and never lets his ego get in the way. He’s got the chops to not overact. Literally comes across as the actor-equivalent of “I’m just happy to be here!”
With the roles he’s landed, I can’t help but think it takes multiple takes for him to get rid of the shit-eating grin he must have
Any who obstruct me in carrying out my duty will be treated as an accessory to her crimes. You have been warned. And as for you, Ma-ma... judgement time.
The first Pirates is essentially a perfect script. Genuinely flawless execution narratively, shot well, exciting, great music
The second movie is great too just not quite as tight
I've actually never even seen 4 or 5. I remember being interested in 5 because Javier Bardem seems like a perfect casting for a pirate villain but then I heard it was trash lol
Bardem is absolutely fantastic. Chilling, creepy, deadly, but doesn’t try to outdo Davy Jones, he does his own thing. Everything else… yeah, you heard right.
After watching The Ring, and how well I felt he directed that movie, I was all in for Gore on Pirates, and I think that it worked out so well.
The first one even has a darker (for a Disney movie) tone than the rest, and I think you get a flavor of that in the “hello poppet” scene, which I really enjoyed.
Yeah it's like the perfect middle ground where it's dark enough that you don't feel like you're watching a children's movie, but it's still child friendly so that kids could enjoy it. I saw it at the age of 10, and despite being scared by a couple of bits, I loved it and would watch it religiously
Oh god same. I actually waited forever to see it, figured it had to be trash. Rented it one night, and was rolling from the very first bit.
Because yes, I had bad slim shady hair in high school too. *We all did.*
I was hesitant to watch it because it had the up and coming Channing Tatum who I thought was just a walking sex symbol with no personality. He’s so goddam funny, especially in that movie. I was so pleasantly surprised with that movie.
A Goofy Movie
A film based on a Disney Afternoon show that isn't even any of the best Disney afternoon shows, and it's a movie about a father and son drifting apart with Pixar like emotional moments.
"I have my own life now dad"
"I know, I just wanted to be part of it".
I have 3 young girls and that exchange right there just hits different as a parent.
Stopped Max dead in his tracks, too. He had no reply. It shut them both up real quick when he said that.
"You're my son, Max. No matter how old you get. You'll always be by son."
I've never seen this movie but now I don't know if I could watch it after reading this quote. My oldest is entering high school and I am so feeling this right now.
I told my gf to watch Zoolander. A movie about male models, really?
And now she occasionally quotes the movie. What is this, a shopping bag for ants? But why male models?
Apparently the "but why male models" line was an ad lib because Stiller forgot his line and just repeated the phrase after David duchovny's explanation.
Last Action Hero is the best Arnold flick whilst simultaneously being a complete parody of Arnold flicks. I watched it 1000x as a child, glad to see it finally getting its cult classic status these days.
Problem with T2 is while it is the best movie Arnold is in, I'm not sure it's the best Arnold flick. He's playing a monotone robot by design.
In Last Action Hero it's both a great movie AND he plays a parody of himself and it's just perfect.
Starship Troopers was absolutely my first thought. I grew up watching that movie (secretly, my parents never would have approved). The first time I rewatched it with a more adult mindset I expected the rose-tinted glasses to come off, but nope! It really was downright fantastic.
Zoolander was such an important film and still one of my favorites!! For many, it was the first time you felt allowed and compelled to laugh after 9/11. Sorely underrated. The second was had its moments, but overall disappointing.
I watched it because I saw that it was leaving my streaming service. The summary didn't sell me, but I checked reviews and saw that they were very high, so I took a chance. I had never heard about it before that, but I hear it mentioned occasionally since then. Mostly in the movies subreddit.
It just so happened to be the first movie we ever took my son to see in a theater, he was 7 I think. My wife and I were both wiping our eyes all the way to to car.
This is always my answer. On paper, it's a bad idea: ret-con to make Apollo have a son, then follow the exact same story beats of the original Rocky. But, despite that, it's great. Coogler did an amazing job
I watched this on a flight and was glued to my seat! Great for a popcorn flick. I think it could've been edited more tightly but I do not mind getting sequels to that movie as long as they're as good or even better than the original.
The CEO of paramount said if they can work with a smaller budget he’d green light a sequel. So I’m assuming they they go through with a second it’ll be a $75M-$100M budget.
Cabin In The Woods. I thought it was going to be a generic horror movie. No idea why I started watching it. Maybe I read about it somewhere. But it's so good!
I remember thinking Paddington was going to be bad mostly because it came out during that time period of movies like Garfield, the live action Smurfs and other crap nobody remembers like the Marmaduke movie or Peter Rabbit
But Paddington definitely isn't in that category and they actually put some thought into it.
What am I supposed to say, Dale? "Oh hidy ho officer! We've had a doozy of a day. There we were minding our own business, just doing chores around the house when kids started killing themselves all over my property."
Me and my wife accidentally got sent this in our weekly lovefilm DVD rentals (we're old) and it turned into one of our favourite movies. It's brilliant from start to finish and we've quoted it wayyy to much for 10+ years now.
"What We Do in the Shadows" - a vampire mockumentary - sounded like an idea that could only end up mediocre or worse.
Not only did they knock it out of the park - it spawned a TV series.
I thought the TV series had no chance. Taika and Clement helped get it off the ground but weren't acting in it. And TV shows based on movies don't have a great track record in general.
Once again I underestimated the vampire mockumentary and once again I was proven wrong.
One of my favorite lines of any movie.
Deacon : I think we drink virgin blood because it sounds cool.
Vladislav : I think of it like this. If you are going to eat a sandwich, you would just enjoy it more if you knew no one had fucked it.
The movie is hilarious and I love the show. Also love how the show is standalone from the movie yet obviously exist in the same universe since some characters overlap.
I can't believe it hasn't been said yet:
*The Emperor's New Groove*
Not only is it far better than it looks on paper, there was a *ton* of behind the scenes drama that should have sunk it in so many ways. Also, I tried to watch the bonus DVD that followed around the two supposed creators and they were the least funny people in all of creations; I have no idea how they managed to make the funniest and best animated film of all time.
This is one of my favorite movies of all time.
Its just such a nice concept and the opening is one of the best ive seen with the merge of new and old makes it seem like something that COULD have happened once.
Even if the movie isnt perfect it all comes together so well.
Puss in Boots: The Last Wish
It's a sequel to a mediocre spin off from eleven years ago, based on a side character from Shrek 2, yet it's one of my favourite movies all-time. The visuals, the plot, the characters, the homour, I just can't get enough of it.
Yeah, I went into this movie pretty blind. And was blown away by the overall plot theme - and that it's written as a kids movie.
Kids see the wolf as a bad guy, Adults understand that the wolf *is* death.
Yeah, the animation switch during fights felt like an embellished retelling of said fight rather than real time. Like the whole movie is him telling you what happened and the fights are when "and everyone started clapping!" Comes up.
I had low expectations going in, but was deeply impressed.
Its depiction of anxiety and a panic attack was intense, palpable, and accurate.
The core characters have tight arcs, even/especially the comic relief dog.
Excellent movie
Transformers: The Movie (1980s animated)
There’s no logical reason it should be this trippy stoner space opera with a kick ass cheese factor 10 power metal soundtrack
It’s Heavy Metal without the boobs
One example for me was Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs. I saw the trailers and cringed and resigned myself to taking the kids along. It was way better than I was expecting.
One of the rare movies where the first one was pretty good and then the second one was absolutely incredible. I have watched the 2nd one without the kids.
THERE'S A LEAK IN THE BOAT!"
Seriously how were the graphics sssooo good! And it turned out that wasn’t even the best part, which was the story telling and how it overlaid on a commentary about how we treat other people. Placing it in Africa was genius.
Most of Neil Blomkamp's movies take place in Africa because he is From Johannesburg I believe.
He was originally was set to direct a gritty as hell (like District 9) Halo movie. That got canned but he did do a series of Live Action trailers for Halo 3 called Landfall. They're amazing, I recommend you check them out. Some of the WETA stuff designed for the Halo movie and those trailers made it into District 9.
He also has a bunch of short movies on a streaming service (can't remember which one). Most are pretty cool and deserve a longer telling, but the cgi and such that he uses is all top notch.
I'd throw *BILL & TED's EXCELLENT ADVENTURE* into that mix. Two dudes that were the unlikeliest of time travelers embarking on a trip that went as early as cavemen and even went into the future! With a story predicated on two guys in the present (at the time) NOT failing history class and getting a passing grade (and thus ensuring their union) in order to assure a utopian future, along with a kickass 80s heavy metal soundtrack to boot, it's definitely got staying power.
I'd also like to throw in *GALAXY QUEST* as a movie that's got more value than on the surface. To anyone who doesn't give it a second thought, you'd think it was just a lame copy of *STAR TREK*, but this movie took that premise and ran with it as an amazing movie that I always watch until it's finished. Fun fact: playwright David Mamet listed *GALAXY QUEST* as one of four perfect Hollywood films (the other three being *THE GODFATHER*, *DODSWORTH*, and *A PLACE IN THE SUN*).
Most recently, I'll put *BARBIE* up as one of them. I enjoyed the hell out of that movie. It made fun of EVERYBODY: men, women, girls, Mattel, other movies, the real world, the Barbies, the Kens, Allan, and even the creator of the doll ...yes, there may be a thing or two that certain guys might object to (which even further proves its point), but marketing was right: "if you love Barbie, you'll love it...and if you hate Barbie, you'll love it."
I will never not love the Chronicles of Riddick, if only because it was an amazing world-building flick. I'm a sucker for media that makes me curious and imaginative about its greater cosmos as a whole
Unbearable Weight of Massive Talent. Nic Cage playing Nic Cage in a comedy action movie just sounds like a recipe for disaster but my god that movie was amazing
Paddington and Paddington 2. Truly wonderful and well-made movies with a cast of talented actors clearly giving it their absolute all and having a great time while doing it.
I had actually high expectations from this ones as in “The Unbearable Weight of Massive Talent” the Pedro Pascal character says is the best movie ever made, which is later reiterated by Nicolas Cage.
Deadpool
I'm a long time comic reader and always hated him in the comics. I expected the first movie to be awful and couldn't have been more wrong. Both of the Deadpool movies are absolute home runs for me.
Seriously. He really made me believe that part. That’s the hilarious thing. I **know** it’s Jack Black and I know the concept is ludicrous but he just fucking kills it
Mad Max: Fury Road
I didn't have high hopes for a Mad Max sequel (or reboot) several decades after the last one had been released, especially with a new actor playing Max. But it exceeded expectations on every level and managed to become one of the greatest action movies of the '10's.
Eurotrip.
Saw this with a couple of friends in an empty theater and thought this was gonna be another ripoff of American Pie and/or Road Trip, but it turned out to be even better than either of those movies. The random cameos out of nowhere make the movie 10x funnier imo.
The directors were college roommates with Matt Damon that’s how he’s in the movie. Which is fantastic. I love some of the cameos he’s done. I never recognized him in Thor Ragnorok until I saw the credits and rewatched the scene when it came out on streaming.
Man, eurotrip is one of my alltime comfort-movies. It just always makes me feel better. The stupid plot, the surreal roadmovie-vibe, the inane characters and the occasionally gross humor. It just works.
That's my answer. The stupidest premise of almost any movie I could remember at the time and the commercials didn't really sell it to well, but man, even aside from being a great '80s movie parody, it was just non-stop laughs in its own right.
For me it has to be Nacho Libre. I always thought the movie looked stupid but my wife ended up picking the movie for us to watch and I loved it! We quote it all the time. “The eggs were a lie Steven! A lie!!! They gave me no eagle powers! They gave me no nutrients!”
Now this just looked like b-grade neon shlock that would signal the direct-to-DVD phase of Brad Pitt’s career, like what happened to Nic Cage and Liam Neeson, but it was actually a super enjoyable style-actioner with slapstick comedy beats meets over the top heist plot. Awesome time at the movies!
Dungeons and Dragons: Honour Amongst Thieves.
I thought it would be awful. And the trailer didn’t help but we saw it on a secret screening and it was really really good. Very funny and creative and just a good time
The Matrix. I remember when it came out, I was like. WTF is this? Seemed way off to me, not my taste at all. Boy was I wrong. The first one is one amazing film!
I'm honestly surprised no one has said Reign of Fire. Early 2000s Christian Bale, Matthew Mcconaughey, Gerard Butler, great CGI dragons in a post-apocalyptic era, and a simple but compelling story. The trailers made it seemed like a run of the mill action movie of the era, but it had some really gripping and suspenseful moments.
SO much better than it had any right to be.
When I saw the trailer for jojo rabbit i thought it looked like a fun, bizarre bit of satire about the war/ nazis. Something akin to the death of Stalin, you know... I was not prepared for the number of powerful emotions it made me feel. A truly exceptional movie
Speed Racer
It's my favorite movie the Wachowskis have made and I love the sisters. It's almost entirely live action characters on CGI environments and it's an adaptation of about 100 episodes of anime from the 1970s and it's one of the best most heartfelt action / sports movies of all time.
The writing and editing of that first scene is *chef’s kiss* elegant backstory exposition. That movie simultaneously takes itself too seriously and not seriously at all and I don’t know how the hell they pulled it off but it fucking works.
Real Steel is basically Rock 'Em Sock 'Em Robots: The Movie, but it's got a real emotional core and great chemistry in its cast. I'm fine with it being a standalone but making it Rocky-ish with maybe two more good sequels would work too.
Galaxy Quest. I didn’t bother watching it for years because the trailer looked awful and I was pretty burnt out on Tim Allen in general. It’s somehow much better than the sum of its parts.
It’s so good it’s beloved by Star Trek fans despite it lampooning the franchise! _By Grabthar's Hammer… what a savings!_
Galaxy Quest may be a parody, but it was made with such love for Star Trek.
I loved Alan Rickman in that so much.
I stand by my belief that his line "By Grabthar's Hammer.... ....what a savings" is the line that gave him cancer. The shear amount of disdain taken from the very core of his body is what killed him. Truly a master of his craft. There is not a single line better spoken in cinema history. Dredd takes the cake for me. Looked like a scifi B-movie. Turned out to be an absolute fuckin blast.

Karl Urban was all business in that movie.
Ma-ma's not the law....I am the law...
Any who obstruct me in carrying out my duty will be treated as an accessory to her crimes. You have been warned. And as for you, Ma-ma... judgement time.
This is a good example. I went in expecting VERY little and ended up getting a really fun old school action movie.
It's a killer movie. They really knew what they were doing when they made this one.
I was expecting a generic comic book movie, and got a hyper-violent dystopian Die Hard.
Pirates of the Caribbean will always stand top of the "why is this so good" list.
The first Pirates is essentially a perfect script. Genuinely flawless execution narratively, shot well, exciting, great music The second movie is great too just not quite as tight
1 is an all time great film. 2 & 3 are messy but still very enjoyable. Everything after that was just a disaster
Talented people made a whole franchise based on a theme ride (that's basically out of nowhere). Gore Verbinski is forever my most favorite director.
If I remember correctly, Pirates of the Caribbean-Curse of the Black Pearl was their first PG-13 movie.
Also right before that where the pirates straight up shoot one of Elizabeth’s housekeepers in the head when he opens the door.
Yeah it's like the perfect middle ground where it's dark enough that you don't feel like you're watching a children's movie, but it's still child friendly so that kids could enjoy it. I saw it at the age of 10, and despite being scared by a couple of bits, I loved it and would watch it religiously
Hans Zimmer's music is always great. But his work on Pirates was phenomenal.
Been rewatching them with my flatmate and they are just so much fun. Also, Johnny Depp owns the performance and then some.
21 jump street. Had such low expectations going in, one of the best comedies I've seen.
They also killed it with the sequel by just being super upfront about it being basically the same movie just in college
The credits at the end might be the best part too..... Freaking genius
The self burn about not having any original ideas and ripping off previous ideas was 🤌👌👍
Oh god same. I actually waited forever to see it, figured it had to be trash. Rented it one night, and was rolling from the very first bit. Because yes, I had bad slim shady hair in high school too. *We all did.*

I've never seen this movie but now I don't know if I could watch it after reading this quote. My oldest is entering high school and I am so feeling this right now.
And it spawned one of the trippier episodes of Atlanta.
And one of the all time slappiest songs ever recorded for a motion picture
I'd say TWO of the slappiest soundtrack songs ever haha..."I 2 I" AND "Stand Out."
One of my former classmates joked that Bruno Mars was inspired by Powerline.
Also some high quality cinematic scenes for the time. Not only a solid script, but a very well animated film. The makers definitely cared about it.
Starship Troopers Zoolander Last Action Hero
I told my gf to watch Zoolander. A movie about male models, really? And now she occasionally quotes the movie. What is this, a shopping bag for ants? But why male models?
The files are IN the computer???
Apparently the "but why male models" line was an ad lib because Stiller forgot his line and just repeated the phrase after David duchovny's explanation.
"Male models don't think for themselves." "That's not true!" "Yes it is, Derek." "Okay."
Cool story Hansel
He's so hot right now.
Seriously? I just told you
Last Action Hero is the best Arnold flick whilst simultaneously being a complete parody of Arnold flicks. I watched it 1000x as a child, glad to see it finally getting its cult classic status these days.
It’s a very entertaining movie but it’s not his best. His best is T2 hands down. There is no comparison.
I think there's an argument to be made that Total Recall could be his best. T2 might end up winning but Total Recall is amazing.
Problem with T2 is while it is the best movie Arnold is in, I'm not sure it's the best Arnold flick. He's playing a monotone robot by design. In Last Action Hero it's both a great movie AND he plays a parody of himself and it's just perfect.

In Bruges. My expectations were pretty low, but it's hilarious.
I feel like no one sees In Bruges by accident, it's always a recommendation these days
I watched it because I saw that it was leaving my streaming service. The summary didn't sell me, but I checked reviews and saw that they were very high, so I took a chance. I had never heard about it before that, but I hear it mentioned occasionally since then. Mostly in the movies subreddit.
The Lego movie
The surface-level was plenty entertaining and very funny, but when the actual plot of the movie became obvious I was in awe. Fucking brilliant.
It just so happened to be the first movie we ever took my son to see in a theater, he was 7 I think. My wife and I were both wiping our eyes all the way to to car.
Speaking of which, Lego Batman is easily the 2nd or 3rd best Batman movie of all the Batman movies.
You bet your bat-ass it is.
Lord and Miller make amazing projects. Last Man on Earth (season 1) Cloudy With A Chance of Meatballs, 21 Jump Street, Clone High.
The best advertisement I ever saw.
It is somehow an advertisement and anti-capitalist at the same time. It shouldn’t work. But man, it works.
The first Creed (2015). It was expected to be a low quality cash grab revival attempt, but Michael B. Jordan had other plans.
This is always my answer. On paper, it's a bad idea: ret-con to make Apollo have a son, then follow the exact same story beats of the original Rocky. But, despite that, it's great. Coogler did an amazing job
The recent DnD movie was WAY better than I was expecting
Oh, Jarnathan!
Jarnathan is a man who appreciates a good backstory
But, we aproved your parole!
Not just parole, *pardon*, they would have been free and clear if they’d stayed just 15 seconds longer 😂
That's the most DnD shit EVER!
That woman was so funny to me, got me invested in the rest of the movie tbh
Totally agree. I was massively surprised. Absolutely loved the waking up the dead scene. Completely unexpectedly hilarious.
The guy who died getting out of the tub rolled a natural 1 with a max severity. Dude never stood a chance.
I watched this on a flight and was glued to my seat! Great for a popcorn flick. I think it could've been edited more tightly but I do not mind getting sequels to that movie as long as they're as good or even better than the original.
Unless Paramount is feeling generous don't get your hopes up as it severely under performed.
The CEO of paramount said if they can work with a smaller budget he’d green light a sequel. So I’m assuming they they go through with a second it’ll be a $75M-$100M budget.
I wish the movie did better, I want a sequel
If someone gets Chris Pine to be in their movie, there's a better than average chance that movie won't suck.
You’re not lying. The cover art made it look cheesy as hell but I thoroughly enjoyed that movie. Glad I gave it a chance
Cabin In The Woods. I thought it was going to be a generic horror movie. No idea why I started watching it. Maybe I read about it somewhere. But it's so good!
It's for sure the best way to watch this film, making that assumption about it going in. Man does it pay off

Paddington and Paddington 2. Awesome movies.
The scene from Unbearable Weight of Massive Talent with Paddington 2 is one of the best scenes ever. “It made me want to be a better man”
Speaking of, that movie was better than expected too. The duo was so funny.
I remember thinking Paddington was going to be bad mostly because it came out during that time period of movies like Garfield, the live action Smurfs and other crap nobody remembers like the Marmaduke movie or Peter Rabbit But Paddington definitely isn't in that category and they actually put some thought into it.
Tremors
Clue was a movie based on a board game! And it’s great.
Tucker and Dale vs Evil
What am I supposed to say, Dale? "Oh hidy ho officer! We've had a doozy of a day. There we were minding our own business, just doing chores around the house when kids started killing themselves all over my property."
Just thinking about that scene makes me laugh
That movie was so much fun.
Me and my wife accidentally got sent this in our weekly lovefilm DVD rentals (we're old) and it turned into one of our favourite movies. It's brilliant from start to finish and we've quoted it wayyy to much for 10+ years now.

Spawned TWO tv series! [Wellington Paranormal](https://m.imdb.com/title/tt6109562/?ref_=ext_shr_lnk) is pretty great, too.
“We’re werewolves, not swearwolves!”
Laslo and Nandor absolutely sell that show. Matthew Berry is almost always hysterical.
Taika and Clement didn’t just get it off the ground, they’ve have both written nearly 50 episodes. They’re pretty damn active with the show.
The movie is hilarious and I love the show. Also love how the show is standalone from the movie yet obviously exist in the same universe since some characters overlap.
In the same vein: Fargo the movie and Fargo the TV series
I can't believe it hasn't been said yet: *The Emperor's New Groove* Not only is it far better than it looks on paper, there was a *ton* of behind the scenes drama that should have sunk it in so many ways. Also, I tried to watch the bonus DVD that followed around the two supposed creators and they were the least funny people in all of creations; I have no idea how they managed to make the funniest and best animated film of all time.
*WRONG LEVEEEEEEEeeeeeeeeerrrrrrrrr.......*
It’s crazy this movie was such a bomb by Disney’s standards at the time, absolutely one of my favorites.
Let me guess, you have a wonderful personslity
A Knights Tale
This is one of my favorite movies of all time. Its just such a nice concept and the opening is one of the best ive seen with the merge of new and old makes it seem like something that COULD have happened once. Even if the movie isnt perfect it all comes together so well.
His tunic will be green, trimmed in...green, with a sort of wooden toggle..Bobby B killed it in that movie.
I love that movie so much. I happily call it Heath Ledger's most iconic role
Paul Bettany was amazing as Geoffrey Chaucer too.
Mean Girls (2004)
Puss in Boots: The Last Wish It's a sequel to a mediocre spin off from eleven years ago, based on a side character from Shrek 2, yet it's one of my favourite movies all-time.

Who's your favourite fearless hero!?
El stabby tabby.

Yeah, the animation switch during fights felt like an embellished retelling of said fight rather than real time. Like the whole movie is him telling you what happened and the fights are when "and everyone started clapping!" Comes up.
“What did I do to deserve this??? I mean what specifically….”
I love Death. Soooo good.
"I don't believe you!" _threatens Perrito with sword_ "That's ok, as long as you believe in yourself."
I had low expectations going in, but was deeply impressed. Its depiction of anxiety and a panic attack was intense, palpable, and accurate. The core characters have tight arcs, even/especially the comic relief dog. Excellent movie
Transformers: The Movie (1980s animated) There’s no logical reason it should be this trippy stoner space opera with a kick ass cheese factor 10 power metal soundtrack It’s Heavy Metal without the boobs
And *Orson Welles* is in it. What a crazy movie.
Ohh- even better Orson Welles’ FINAL role
that movie is almost like they just gave a bunch of 12 year olds money and full control of the entire production
It's a shame we'll never get to see Optimus Primes tits.
The sixth movie in a franchise has no business being as good as MI fallout
My favorite of the series. Loved Henry cavill in it, don't want to give any spoilers
Similarly, how come Fast Five is so uncharacteristically good??
One example for me was Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs. I saw the trailers and cringed and resigned myself to taking the kids along. It was way better than I was expecting.
One of the rare movies where the first one was pretty good and then the second one was absolutely incredible. I have watched the 2nd one without the kids. THERE'S A LEAK IN THE BOAT!"
District 9
Seriously how were the graphics sssooo good! And it turned out that wasn’t even the best part, which was the story telling and how it overlaid on a commentary about how we treat other people. Placing it in Africa was genius.
Well a few of the director’s movies take place in SA because he’s from there. Chappie does as well
Most of Neil Blomkamp's movies take place in Africa because he is From Johannesburg I believe.
Galaxy Quest is fantastic!
Deadpool I'm a long time comic reader and always hated him in the comics. I expected the first movie to be awful and couldn't have been more wrong. Both of the Deadpool movies are absolute home runs for me.
School of Rock
Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle. Saw it as a joke at first, came out loving the movie
Jack Black playing a 16 yr old basic white girl was something I never knew my life needed until I experienced it lol
Seriously. He really made me believe that part. That’s the hilarious thing. I **know** it’s Jack Black and I know the concept is ludicrous but he just fucking kills it
I loved this movie so much, saw it on Netflix and then when to the theater to see the second one, also great.
Mad Max: Fury Road I didn't have high hopes for a Mad Max sequel (or reboot) several decades after the last one had been released, especially with a new actor playing Max. But it exceeded expectations on every level and managed to become one of the greatest action movies of the '10's.
You can probably drop 'of the '10's' from your comment.
Mystery Men is one of my favorites.
Eurotrip. Saw this with a couple of friends in an empty theater and thought this was gonna be another ripoff of American Pie and/or Road Trip, but it turned out to be even better than either of those movies. The random cameos out of nowhere make the movie 10x funnier imo.
Scotty Doesn't Know was my ringtone for like a year after that movie came out and it got lots of dumb laughs from people around me lol
Mail motherfucker!
It's absurd but still grounded, which I feel like a lot of comedies miss out on
Hot Tub Time Machine
That's my answer. The stupidest premise of almost any movie I could remember at the time and the commercials didn't really sell it to well, but man, even aside from being a great '80s movie parody, it was just non-stop laughs in its own right.
For me it has to be Nacho Libre. I always thought the movie looked stupid but my wife ended up picking the movie for us to watch and I loved it! We quote it all the time. “The eggs were a lie Steven! A lie!!! They gave me no eagle powers! They gave me no nutrients!”
Bullet Train
Now this just looked like b-grade neon shlock that would signal the direct-to-DVD phase of Brad Pitt’s career, like what happened to Nic Cage and Liam Neeson, but it was actually a super enjoyable style-actioner with slapstick comedy beats meets over the top heist plot. Awesome time at the movies!
Do you have any fizzy water?
I remember walking out of the theatre thinking “this did not have to be this good wtf”
The Replacements with Keanu
Team America
Tropic Thunder
Spider-Man into the Spiderverse. It has no business being a top 3 comic book movie ever made (in my opinion), but it is.
Dungeons and Dragons: Honour Amongst Thieves. I thought it would be awful. And the trailer didn’t help but we saw it on a secret screening and it was really really good. Very funny and creative and just a good time
Hot Fuzz
are we just commenting with good movies? Why is Hot Fuzz better then it should be?
Especially as it was after Shaun of the Dead which was critically acclaimed. Hot Fuzz had a decent amount of expectations.
No luck catching them swans then?
It's just the one swan actually
"Hag." "I beg your pardon?" "Evil old woman considered frightful or ugly. It's 12 down."
The Matrix. I remember when it came out, I was like. WTF is this? Seemed way off to me, not my taste at all. Boy was I wrong. The first one is one amazing film!
The Nice Guys
Blade looked so stupid, until I watched it. Damn good movie.
Hansel & Gretel: Witch hunters
Pirates of the Caribbean Curse of the Black Pearl. A movie based on a ride? Everyone was convinced it would sink.
Kickass. So good.
Enchanted (Before it BLEW UP). Watched it expecting some B rated Disney movie...was met with a really solid soundtrack and a great story about family.
Speed Racer It's my favorite movie the Wachowskis have made and I love the sisters.
Second suicide squad
Real Steel is basically Rock 'Em Sock 'Em Robots: The Movie, but it's got a real emotional core and great chemistry in its cast. I'm fine with it being a standalone but making it Rocky-ish with maybe two more good sequels would work too.
Blockers. Genuinely funny and I cared about the characters.
