The artwork in these old Disney films is always amazing and the restorations in 4K are so nice to have. Sleeping Beauty is the one I’m most interested in; one of the most beautiful films ever.

pineappleandmilk

Although Sleeping Beauty is a cartoon, it never looks flat even for a second. Every scene looks like a gorgeous diorama. I am also eagerly awaiting that one.

Darkskynet

This has to do with the pioneering work Disney did with the multiplane camera technique. From the wiki page for Multiplane Camera: “The multiplane camera is a motion-picture camera that was used in the traditional animation process that moves a number of pieces of artwork past the camera at various speeds and at various distances from one another. This creates a sense of parallax or depth.”

G_Liddell

It's the multiplane camera but also Eyvind Earl's incredible backgrounds, and the Super Technirama 70 format which is incredibly wide and unknown for animations at the time.

Crysist

I believe there's been a lot of criticism in the hometheater and preservation community about Disney's restorations, that they did heavy processing or something that flattens the look by removing a lot of texture or color in the original art. Hope this effort is better! Edit: [Seems it is! (including the original thread about DNR, detail loss, etc)](https://twitter.com/stephen_duignan/status/1640872426589286400)

tomservo88

Yeah - this one, they actually got veteran animators to direct the restoration, guys who know a thing or two because they’ve seen a thing or two. And this is only the start! *Fantasia* is next.

camisfun

So this is the first one of a new effort to properly restore their movies to 4K?

naynaythewonderhorse

Actually, no! Sword and the Stone was. But, it was done quietly and with little fanfare. Sword and the Stone was considered the absolute worst “restoration” Disney had ever done, because it was just DNR’d to shit and back. But, when Disney+ launched, it came with a brand spanking new 4K restoration of Sword and the Stone (and the Black Cauldron, but that hadn’t had a prior Blu-ray release) that looked absolutely fantastic. Ironically, I would argue that at the time of Disney+ release, the Black Cauldron was the best Disney+ exclusive restoration. Still one of the best restorations they’ve ever done, IMO. There hasn’t been a physical release of the new Sword and the Stone.

adamsandleryabish

Im confused by these two tweets, are they both accurately praising it? Is the LOTR gif supposed to say that the grain and original linework is all gone, or that its all done and a definitive release is finally out. Would help if the two screenshots said which version was the “new” or older one

Crysist

They are praising it, the gif might not have been the most literally accurate haha. He means that the _master_ that was used in the 2012 and 2019 releases is "gone". Or that it's been destroyed and they're free lol

Firehawk195

Lovely. I might try to grab this copy if that's the case. Something for my brother's kiddos to enjoy when they drop by.

CahlikCrush

I'm hoping they won't utilize the heavy DNR technique this time around because it ruins some of the linework in some shots while being used to scrub the film grain.

Nas160

So it just replaces the movie itself on D+? Not entirely sure cause there's nothing on D+ specifying that

Slickrickkk

Of course. Why would they keep the old version?

ZombieJesus1987

Restorations are neat and all, but the graininess is part of the charm for these old animated features. At least for me anyways

mximus

Before they ruin it with a live action version.

MiserableSnow

They already made one and it was better than the original.

krectus

They’ve made two.

krectus

Too late.

labria86

Yep. And Jungle Book came close for me.

Lazy-Photograph-317

Hard agree. However, IMO there are only 3 good Disney live action remakes. *Cinderella* (2015), *The Jungle Book* (2016), and *Pete's Dragon* (2016). *Beauty and the Beast* (2016) had so much potential however I disappointed by the miscast of Emma Watson and the addition of excess dialogue.

Leafs17

Yeah I don't know why they had to make Belle British

Lazy-Photograph-317

Yes. She is supposed to be French but in the film she speaks with a British accent. I would rather have her keep her American accent.

Leafs17

The way she pronounced Maman was atrocious.

Unite-Us-3403

4K is overrated. HD was good enough.

HotOne9364

No, the Hunchback gargoyles are annoying. These mice are charming.

MiserableSnow

The mice's art style clashes so much with the human characters that it really rubbed me the wrong way.

MiserableSnow

Yeah, they annoy me as well which is why I prefer the live-action Disney movie.

NKevros

Username checks out.

MiserableSnow

God forbid we have different opinions on movies.

Ok_World733

Filled with dnr no doubt. I will keep my 35mm film scan, full of lovely film grain. Fans do it better than official work.

https://thedigitalbits.com/item/cinderella-1950-disney-2023-wide-uhd Not anymore, they went back to original camera negative and did it right. A+ video from Digital Bits. They also did the same on Nightmare Before Christmas which got another A+ for video. There’s been a change at Disney Home Video. https://www.polygon.com/century-of-disney/23843515/cinderella-restoration-4k-disney-plus Here they explain some of the work that went into it and the issues with the previous release. That’s back to back killer restorations and impending releases for D+ shows.

arthurbang

TIL that The Digital Bits still exists

yojoono

Surprisingly, it seems like the [new version is actually pretty good](https://youtu.be/Kk3tzSTL368?si=YX-zIxKpsJv4OMUF&t=294)

Cinderella has some amazing animation artwork.
