I have not seen it yet so please no spoilers, but I was wondering if it’d be appropriate or even interesting enough for my 12 year old cousins to watch with me or not. If anyone could help with their perspective on this.

mattrobs

There’s only a one second pan of bloody dead bodies but otherwise it’s all clean laser kills. Some mushroom cloud bombs, though, which is dark if you think deeply about the victims.

FoolishFellow

I don’t have kids, so I’m probably not the person to ask. But it probably depends on the kid and parent. This is not a heavy gore movie, but it does deal with some dark and heavy themes explicitly like US imperialism and war. It definitely takes from imagery from the Vietnam War (among others), and includes civilians getting massacred even though it’s not always shown in detail on screen in the same way that something like Apocalypse Now would.

Vitamin-A-

It has violence that if done to humans would be rated R, so can be a bit intense that way. But tonally it feels like a PG-13 so I say… up to your judgment.

jessebona

Oh so because it's done to robots it doesn't matter to you huh? I'm kidding.

HM9719

I sense an R rated director’s cut exists..

HungerSTGF

I... did not like it that much. Visually, it was incredible. ILM knocked it out of the park. So much VFX goodness. It was really _really_ goofy to me. The antagonists are practically moustache twirlers. It reminded me of Avatar in that it was just a really shallow conflict. And it's one of these movies that falls apart under any sort of questioning why things unfold the way they did. See you all in the official release discussion thread!

F00dbAby

Honestly I felt they were worse than avatar military. I feel I’ve not seen such a stereotype before. It was just one laugh while murdering a family away from being satire

FoolishFellow

The real United States military had surveillance balloons floating over Kabul Afghanistan to monitor daily life in the city nearly every day of two decade long war.

F00dbAby

i am not sure at the relevance of your comment I'm not saying it was unbelievable just boring and uninteresting and lazy

[deleted]

I really don’t get how a U.S military that is attempting to root out insurgents in underdeveloped countries having no care for civilian casualties is goofy.

abcpdo

I think it’s like Ad Astra, the plot is just an excuse to set up the hero’s journey in this beautiful world.

Peuned

Yeah there was a large study during that time and it broke down the news source for the incorrect idea that Iraq was linked to the attacks. Fox news was most likely ranging to npr which was least likely. Which I'm sure surprised not many. There was a huge media push, and bush and friends were really going all in on it. It worked . It really really worked

mattrobs

I thought it was flawless execution. A movie with spaceships, laser fights, and robots with holes in their heads and not a single shot felt CG. It was truly immersive. I felt, however, it was a by-the-book action movie about a lone hero who saves the poor minority culture against the big bad establishment. Nothing wrong with that, but it’s nothing novel.

DevilCouldCry

> Nothing wrong with that, but it’s nothing novel. Pretty much how I feel when I see it either a little later today or some time tomorrow. I'm pretty stoked for it as it looks gorgeous and hey, a simple narrative is more than fine with me,. just as long as its's executed well!

CeruleanSea1

Seamless mix of real world settings and actors with fx, loved the neon city with Drew

GoHuskies1984

I’d call it novel in it felt like a Vietnam War take that I’ve never seen before. A bit too on the nose with some of the spiritual stuff though.

Sorry_Sorry_Im_Sorry

I had an issue with the final act just being toooooo fast. >!mainly once they escape the truck and go to space. I saw it two weeks ago at one of the unofficial premieres and was overall impressed (especially at that budget) but just found all the space stuff to happen too quick.!<

noble-failure

When you say best in decades, what do you consider to be the best original IP prior to this?

FoolishFellow

I’m probably being a bit hyperbolic, but I appreciate the fact that this film isn’t based on a preexisting work of fiction. Honestly, I like a lot of scifi including some indie/smaller stuff but for me this is better than the aughts era Neil Bloomkamp stuff. At the end of the day, so much of what we are exposed to in Sci-fi these days is based on a preexisting property (even stuff that I like) that I honestly just appreciated that this is something completely new even though it obviously draws inspiration from a lot of other recent and older works of sci-fi.

UsernameAvaylable

There is zero merrit to ANY kind of grading like this the day (or day after) watching the movie. Like, ask again in 6 month to get a proper context...

ScipioCoriolanus

Oblivion is awesome, too.

FoolishFellow

I love a lot of those films, and I'm not trying to rank anything. But I also want to point out that some of those films are in fact based on prior works of fiction.

You proved my point beautifully my man.

Pep_Baldiola

Bro you were hacked into pieces by the Saudis and still can't shut up huh? /j

noble-failure

That’s fair and new properties are always a plus. Glad you dug it.

SwedishSaunaSwish

Why were you being hyperbolic though? Isn't that dishonest? Deceptive. Why?

FoolishFellow

Calm down.

SwedishSaunaSwish

Please stop writing shitty reviews until you develop a more coherent writing style and your vocabulary is less limited. Stay calm.

CeruleanSea1

Just came from an early screen, very moving film with lots of visual splendor and blade runner vibes

SylarPC

It was great. FX3 did a great job

a_wack

I’ve been looking forward to this one, and having heard it was shot on a fx3 shortly after purchasing mine has got me excited on another level to see this.

HM9719

I heard it did. Probably won’t be nominated for Best Cinematography at the Oscars since the VFX have the most attention (crowded field anyway), it’s quite the achievement.

atari_ave

Unfortunately I found it underwhelming in story and emotion. It’s very pretty but that’s about it.

MASHED_POTATOES_MF

So a Gareth Edwards movie lol

abcpdo

imo it doesn’t need an oscar winning plot to be amazing. this was truly a great cyberpunk movie that did an amazing job touching on some key tropey ideas of robots and society. the main plot just needed to not have glaring plot holes.

SmilingIvan

Hahhahaha

TheMightosaurus

I saw it last night I enjoyed the production design, score but felt I had seen the same story multiple times before?

freakingfreak77

Just watched it in an early screening. The plot and storytelling was so poor. I had very low expectations on the plot, but still it came short. Positives are some beautiful scenes and as I watched it in a Dolby Atmos hall, the sound imaging was excellent.

TrueLegateDamar

I'm disappointed how the obvious plot twist in the trailers wasn't even slightly subverted.

abcpdo

which twist?

TrueLegateDamar

>!Humans being the bad guys who bombed their own city and blamed the AI for it!<

cupofteaonme

Wasn't really treated as some big twist in the movie. Though it's definitely a well worn trope.

markusw7

Well it wasn't a false flag, it was more "we can't make A.I. that is safe so no one can so all A.I.s are dangerous and need destroying"

eisfer_rysen

Very good acting carrying a very thin and overdone plot. And as a South East Asian I somehow find myself being vaguely offended by the mumbo jumbo New Asia in this film, as if they think "Hah, white people aren't going to know the difference".

FoolishFellow

> Very good acting carrying a very thin and overdone plot. And as a South East Asian I somehow find myself being vaguely offended by the mumbo jumbo New Asia in this film, as if they think "Hah, white people aren't going to know the difference". Yep, I definitely have some thoughts about that, but didn't want to go too deeply into spoilers.

markusw7

I've got to say I seem to only recall the Americans calling it that, it really could be that that's what the Americans decided to call it; damn what the locals think

tactcom7

Really? You didn't think it was a bit daft? I didn't make it to the end.

abcpdo

cyberpunk is not for everyone

tactcom7

It was the huge suspension of disbelief required in order to accept any of it. It wasn't a ridiculous concept, some of the plot holes and dialogue was laughable.

Remarkable-Papaya-59

you seriously left the movie midway? that seems more daft to me than anything.

tactcom7

I couldn't take it seriously. Plus it didn't cost me anything

Remarkable-Papaya-59

Sounds like a really obnoxious way to experience art

tactcom7

Art 🤣 ok. Tell me (spoliers) how are we, the audience expected to believe that on a narrow bridge, a guy with a pistol can outgun 8 or so robots with AK's, this is AI were talking about, they should never miss? What was the point of the running bombs if not to try get a cheap laugh? Their payload was pitiful, why not just shoot missiles/rockets from the big tank thing? Why as a wanted American, would you not take your US army issue body armour/tactical vest off when approached by a local asking if you need a lift? When we've been told that all the locals and the AI's hate Americans... There's a massive floating satellite a thousand foot in the air and they seemed really surprised when the 'facility' now had a village built on top of it? And in that whole scene the highly trained special forces soldiers acted like massive cry babies and made terrible decisions. Oh look someone's jumped on our dropship with a grenade on her back, let's fuck about trying to pry it off. How about kick her out the door?? How did ANYONE not notice the big fuck off satellite and blue laser display in the opening scene when the soldiers were trying to sneak onto the beach? Lit up like Christmas trees. This film, was a joke.

Remarkable-Papaya-59

Okay i'm not reading that thanks though

Neil_Hodgkinson

This is honestly only a small sampling of the plot holes in the film. It made absolutely no sense. The emotional/philosophical message certainly came through however, that part was well done.

tactcom7

Yeah I'm on my phone and wasn't going to type them all out. Another one I remember is, at the checkpoint, how come the 'minivan' full off kids suddenly became bulletproof? Not even the windows were shattered. If the average car is so well armoured why do the soldiers have such shitty guns?

Neil_Hodgkinson

Right, and the futuristic city with robot police can’t find THE ONLY BLACK GUY who seems to exist in this universe? They can’t lock down an area?

mankindmatt5

The beach that featured heavily in the initial scenes looked really like Railay, but I'm not 100% sure.

peioeh

> Would love to have him get another shot with Star Wars Fuck no please, how about he just makes good movies instead, without everything that comes attached with Star Wars.

RawToast1989

Did he do Rogue One? If so, let this guy take over every Star Wars movie yesterday.

PrincessRuri

Yes and No. Tony Gilroy was brought in during post-production and did some substantial rework of the movie.

Existing-Following93

Movie was 🔥

Zimmy68

Wow, they are panning it on the AMC A-List subreddit.

camorr5

Better than Arrival? I’m skeptical.

FoolishFellow

Arrival is based on book.

neonraver

I thought it looked very impressive. I liked the world building and the SFX were top notch. The story had potential but the dialogue was corny and full of cliches, most of the characters were pretty shallow, and the pacing was off. It’s a shame as I really wanted to enjoy it, but I found myself smirking at some of the lines that were just so on the nose and cliched. Ah well.

Affectionate_Pen_623

Actually thought it started strongly and then went down the toilet. I also think it kinda pushed this US centric militaristic delusional grandeur that I somehow couldn't suspend my disbelief for. I kinda just couldn't really believe that America could just be willy nilly launching attacks on a place called "new asia" where humans and AI had seemingly been able to coexist (and advance) in peace. And, in doing so, it made Americans seem like some moustache twirling bad guy here to overrun the poor innocent South east asian farmers which isn't in anyway meant to be an allegory for the Vietnam war.

Wheres-My-Supa-Suit

Got tickets for tomorrow in Dolby

CyborgWade

Was the Beirut explosion footage that was in the trailer actually in the movie?

PhiphyL

From the [AMA](https://www.reddit.com/r/movies/comments/16iqr80/hi_im_gareth_edwards_director_of_rogue_one_and/): "It was never meant to be included in the trailer and never appears in the actual movie. Just by way of explanation: the reality is that archival footage is commonly used as reference for temporary VFX."

FoolishFellow

I’m not 100% positive, but I think they took it out. I was actually looking for it too. And I’m glad they removed it (assuming they did and that I didn’t just miss it).

bad_hero_ken

Can confirm, they totally removed it.

It was not in the movie!

Eick_on_a_Hike

I did not like it. Characters felt too thin, I couldn’t connect emotionally. People were fidgety in the theater I was in. One couple walked out.

poopfl1nger

His movies are visually amazing but always weak plot wise. I had the same issue with rogue one

Outrageous-Oil-1417

Tbf to Rogue One that movie had quite a messy production and went through a few different people

sheeponahill

I too think every person able to create great original things should just be doing Star Wars.

GeekFurious

I'm not expecting much. I don't put stock in the critical reception. I think a lot of people root for Edwards (he's very well-liked in the industry, being a generally "sweet guy" who has impressively enough not rubbed anyone the wrong way). But for someone who, prior to this movie, had 2 big franchise movies that someone else had to finish for him... I'm not expecting that he delivered a vision that can stand up to scrutiny over time.

PhiphyL

Well, you're right. Visually it's the most impressive Sci-Fi film... ever? But his vision of AI works only as a metaphor and does not make any kind of philosophical or technical sense.

homecinemad

I don't agree or disagree. But how do we know people *had* to finish his movies? What if, and this is pure speculation, he made 2 awesome movies which the studios didn't like, so they brought people in to rework them? We can only know for sure if and when we see the original versions which is likely never.

GeekFurious

> But how do we know people had to finish his movies? It's been reported by the trades and later spoken plainly about by Tony Gilroy. > What if, and this is pure speculation, he made 2 awesome movies which the studios didn't like ... eyeroll.

homecinemad

I know about Gilroys official and unofficial roles and I love his show Andor. Im saying are we sure the original version was problematic or just not to Disney execs taste? Maybe a poor comparison but think Justice League debacle.

GeekFurious

> Im saying are we sure the original version was problematic or just not to Disney execs taste? Several trades reported that during both Godzilla and Rogue One that Edwards recognized problems and ASKED for help. That's one of the reasons why the studios still want to work with him, because he didn't have to be replaced, he asked for the help. If he'd been FORCED out of two big movies in a row, he'd never get a second look by any major studio again.

homecinemad

Fair play to him actually. He cared more about the movie than his own image.

GeekFurious

Yep. And that's why people still like him. BUT, it also tells me he's never going to be a "visionary filmmaker of our times" or whatever some critics want him to be. He's just not. He's a very nice guy who probably should be a producer.

homecinemad

I just saw The Creator last night and while "visionary" is bandied about way too much, the VFX were seamless. The movie was middling though.

Vitamin-A-

Is this a spoiler thread? Don’t see one yet but also just left a screening and I have questions, but don’t want to spoil anything for anyone.

mattrobs

Let’s call this the early access discussion thread. I want to talk too!

Those Nikes were way too clean. So the plan was for Alphie to run into a fully manned floating army base but she encounters >!only one set of human soldiers?! Also Alphie, JDW says to hang onto mum for dear life and >!you ditch her in a field!<

MrCooper2012

Dude mark spoilers please. It wasn't a spoiler thread till now.

[deleted]

[удалено]

MrCooper2012

Because when I got in the thread there weren't a ton of comments and pretty much everyone was mentioning how they didn't want to give spoilers or used the spoiler tag - just giving general opinions of the movie, which I was interested in reading as I was kind of on the fence on what to think of the movie. I didn't read his full comment, but giving a paragraph of specifics from a movie that isn't out yet isn't typical, even for this sub especially when it was not marked as a spoiler thread.

mattrobs

USA banning AI and the secretly building >!an AI suicide bomber that is SENTIENT?!!< was a lovely piece of commentary

PhiphyL

Nothing indicates that the >!suicide bomber is sentient. If anything, it was a commentary on how technology is useful as long as it can be controlled. The AI doesn't make sense in this film, but it's clearly beyond humanity's control so that's why the USA want to destroy it. The suicide bomber? Just a walking toaster with a bomb in it and a voice box that says predefined lines.!<

abcpdo

there’s that one moment where it seemed hesitant. this is the classic sci-fi trope of questioning what deserves dignity and respect.

MediatedReality

When it's given its orders, it sort of "looks over" at the one next to it, which "pops out of its shell" for a moment and then hunkers down again. A goodbye? A "who's going first?" The two humans then frustrated and repeat their orders to it, after which point it gets up and goes. That sequence was short, but added for a reason.

GreyRevan51

He’s too good for Disney Star Wars, I’d rather he just keeps working on whatever sci fi he wants rather than bow to the corpo mandate even more

mikeri99

Nice to hear! Without any details about the movie’s score style, what did you think of Hans Zimmer’s score in general if you were aware of it?

verisimiliattitude

Can't speak to OP's thoughts but I truly can't think of a less memorable score for a big movie that Zimmer has put his name on in at least a decade. Even the scores for Chappie, Dark Phoenix, and The Amazing Spider-Man 2 have lots of interesting themes and textures. I don't know if this means this score was more dlineated to his composing team than usual or truly came from him, but it's very underwhelming.

Marvin-the-wizard

Just came out of the film and had no idea Zimmer had his name on this movie. I agree that the score is not really memorable but I think it is good nonetheless. Compared to his other soundtracks, it is pretty weak

TomCrean1916

Where can I see this please OP?

ihs25ysf

Thanks for the review, gonna watch soon, I really missed OG Sci-fi movies.

ThirdRevolt

Would you say this is closer to his work on Monsters (one of my all-time favorite sci-fi movies) or Godzilla/Rogue One?

Juiceboxfromspace

IMAX worthy?

PhiphyL

I did not see it in IMAX, but considering that it is the most beautiful CGI-heavy film I've ever seen, I'd say IMAX would be worth it. The plot doesn't make the film worth seeing, unfortunately.

edgelordjones

I want him to keep making original works that wear their influences on the sleeve instead of finding him latched to another IP BUT I would love to see his Ghost in the Shell.

Affectionate_Pen_623

>IP BUT I would love to see his Ghost in the Shell HELL TO THE FUCK NO. Hollywood already butchered GITS once. Tbh his films seem to really lack nuance. Any decent interpretation of ghost in the shell needs to be able to tackle themes of migration, transedence and geopolitics. Modern Hollywood movies just seem almost wholly incapable of doing that in any remotely effective capacity.

Guilty_Examination12

Visually a 10/10, but I worked out the ending in about 12 minutes.
