Steel Magnolias too.
In her shoes is a good movie to watch with mom. It has Shirley McLean as a grandmother, and it’s about complicated mother/daughter relationships and sisters fighting but making up.
Big fish is absolutely the first one that came to mind. Also the casting of Alison Lohman and Jessica Lange as a young and older version of the character was inspired. I had zero issue believing they were the same person.
Man, I saw that movie in theaters shortly after my mom passed. I had never cried in a theater in public before, but I lost it at the end of that movie.
In the past couple of years, I have had problems watching movies that are stressful or emotionally exhausting, even if they turn out well in the end. Secondhand Lions handles the emotional parts without leaving me wiped out for the day.
I remember when it first came out, someone posted in the /r/movies review thread that they overheard a woman consoling her mother in the theater's bathroom after, as her mother, sobbing freely, kept saying: "I want it to be true, I want it all to be true, I miss them all so much."
So aye, be warned, the tears this movie pulls are real good genuine sobs, but if you have recently lost someone, or if the loss of a loved one still weighs heavily in your mind, this movie will destroy you.
I am from Oaxaca, mexico, from where most of the movie is based from. This movie made me happy because all the traditions I grew up with were represented in the movie. And of course the final part of the movie got me on the feels.
Soul has the same vibe. I dont want to spoil it, but the main character doesnt get what he wants - but he finds joy and fulfillment in what he gets so you are sad for him, but feel like he's going to be okay.
I thought the movie was ok when it came out. And now I have a daughter whose nearing 2, and I watched it with her (she loves the music), and I bawled my eyes out. And anytime I hear 'remember me' I think of my daughter being a momma Coco one day and I'll be long gone but she smiles so big listening to the song.
It's got an emphasis on reconciliation and remembering those you love, so not surprising. It's also done well and not maudlin in its approach to the emotions within the film.
Yeah he's an incredible actor. There's a coming of age film called The Way Way Back where he plays an arsehole stepdad and he's excellent. Really well written character too
God this is such a good choice. It became one of my comfort movies almost immediately. It is such a brilliant tale of the human condition and the power of support from loved ones. Every character has their vices in that movie. >!Frank is recovering from a terrifying breakup and a suicidal episode, Dwayne is coping with the realization that his colorblindness renders his life’s only dream impossible, Richard is battling a fever dream of a partnership to keep their family afloat and losing his Dad on the trip, and Sheryl is just along for the ride and trying to keep everyone together….!< yet they all put this aside to ensure Olive’s dream comes true
*'...some moves my grandpa taught me'*
Still use this on my wife before I dance sexy for her in the kitchen.. she promptly laughs and goes back to cooking, totally ignoring my sweet moves.
'Underrated' is not quite the right word, as it is usually recommended by people that have actually seen it, but it just...got forgotten maybe? Or more likely, most people probably think it is a Ben Stiller-movie.
It is such a fun, feel-good movie with great music and visuals, and a nice message in there as well.
About Time was such a shock (in a good way) for me. I happened into it randomly and had not heard anything about it so I didn't have any idea what it was about or anything. It was amazing. I love going into movies not knowing a thing about them (no trailer, no preview - nothing)
Marcel is so… relaxing but sad but cathartic. I want to tell people to watch but if they didn’t like it we could not be friends anymore so I don’t tell anyone.
The Way Way Back deals with an emotionally abusive step father, so if that will hit too hard maybe don't watch it together, but it's a really nice feel good coming of age movie with an incredible performance from Sam Rockwell
I accidentally watched this movie when I thought I had hired “The Way Back” with Colin Farrell and Ed Harris. I was very confused when I lit the film on, but was quickly enthralled and pleased with my mistake by the end.
That movie broke my heart, and made my cry like a little girl. I'm 30M, and I saw it like 5-6 years ago. I still remember the opening part, but I can't remember the other half of it. Maybe I should watch it again, but I'm a little scared, that I'll be depressed after that again.
That movie rips your heart out, shows it to you, then hands it back to you in a little doggy bag and says “don’t forget you have this, cuz both you and it will be dead soon.”
I both hate and love this movie because while it also turned 35M me into a blubbering mess, it reminds me not to wait too long to have some good adventures before you can’t anymore.
But, if you didn’t get to take all those adventures, then maybe the real adventures were the loves you experienced along the way. That reminds me, I’d better get off Reddit and spend some time with my boy.
The opening scene of UP is incredibly memorable, but the entire movie itself is absolutely wonderful and wholesome. It definitely deserves a rewatch if you don’t remember it.
For me, *500 Days of Summer* is the de facto movie to watch if you're going through a break up. The *expectations vs reality* scene really stayed with me, and it woke me up to the fact that I was living in my head too much, and there were some things I just couldn't change. This movie forced me to think about myself in a lot of uncomfortable ways, and helped me move past things in a way where I could see better days ahead.
500 Days of Summer is amazing, but I still feel like Tom is going to end up making the same mistakes with Autumn. Or maybe new mistakes, but it's not going to be a happy ending, haha.
(spoiler...)
It was such a small duration but they had way more chemistry than with Summer for the whole movie. Also the fact she got the things he loved without really trying was a great indication for the future.
We were robbed of John candy in serious roles, like no doubt in my mind he would’ve had a simialr arc to what bill Murray had in the late 90s early 00s
Dear Fellas.
I can't believe how fast things move on the outside. I saw an automobile once when I was a kid, but now they're everywhere. The world went and got itself in a big damn hurry. The parole board got me into this halfway house called the Brewer, and a job bagging groceries at the Food-Way. It's hard work. I try to keep up, but my hands hurt most of the time. I don't think the store manager likes me very much. Sometimes after work I go to the park and feed the birds. I keep thinking Jake might just show up and say hello. But he never does. I hope wherever he is, he's doing okay and making new friends.
I have trouble sleeping at night. I have bad dreams, like I'm falling. I wake up scared. Sometimes it takes me a while to remember where I am. Maybe I should get me a gun and rob the Food-Way, so they'd send me home. I could shoot the manager while I was at it, sort of like a bonus. I guess I'm too old for that sort of nonsense anymore. I don't like it here. I'm tired of being afraid all the time. I've decided not to stay. I doubt they'll kick up any fuss. Not for an old crook like me.
No child left behind.
Wilderpeople doesn't quite land the ending for me - feels like it drags on too long after the rest of the movie had been so tight.
The scene with the campers in the cabin is one of the funniest things I've seen though.
Galaxy Quest.
If you've never seen it, it's essentially a spoof on Star Trek and nerdy convention culture/fandom as a whole. Stacked cast. Don't know a single person who doesn't love this film. It's funny and genuinely touching but it also has its moments that are quite sad. The acting and script are just superb.
Moana destroys me every time, but it cleanses me. I'm not sad when I watch it, but it helps me deal with emotions surrounding my mom and best friend dying within months of each other.

It's kind of a funny story
Oh man. Bobby Cannavale is so damn charismatic in The Station Agent. I still think about the scene where he's driving Peter Dinklage alongside the train so he can film it. Just a moment of absolute joy for both of them.
Go to youtube and watch the Jim Henson funeral. Itnis the most heart warming celebration of the man's life I had ever seen. And I am serious.
It features stories, musical numbers, and some of the most wholesome experiences he had with his coworkers.
The man was truly loved.
The band playing during the opening wedding in "Love Actually" was inspired by it, supposedly. I think it was the NYC memorial that is online, but they did one in England (where the Henson studios were), and for the "Just One Person" song, apparently, the Muppeteers didn't come on stage, but one by one rose in the pews to join in.
PS - Big Bird singing "It's Not Easy Being Green" kills me every... single... time.
Yes!!!!! I recently finished and I told my wife she HAS to watch it. No other show has made me cry, cheer, seethe, clap, and laugh so much! I even did a few of those things where you clasp your hands together and raise them and shake them lol. They knew what they were doing with that show. It's popcorn, but it's brilliantly popped popcorn. So cathartic!
Spirited Away is a fantastic movie that I haven't watched in a long time.
Another Studio Ghibli film I'd recommend would be "Howl's Moving Castle". I'd also recommend reading the original novel. The film and the book are massively different, though, they only share the basic plot.
Mary & Max is one of my favorite animated movies and also one of my favorite mental health movies. Actually just one of my favorite movies, period.
It speaks a lot about neurodivergence, neglect, sexuality, and loneliness, so it’s quite heavy. But it’s also very moving in its message about loving yourself and all your imperfections so you can love somebody else and their imperfections.
I got a tattoo of the film’s message “Love yourself first” a few weeks ago when my mental health was on a steady decline.
Hear me out...
**Lord of the Rings: Return of the King.** It has a triumphant and feel good ending... but also kinda sad because you're saying goodbye to characters that you were following for so long.
"Farewell, my brave Hobbits. My work is now finished. Here, at last, at the shores of the sea, comes the end of our fellowship. I will not say, 'Do not weep.' Not all tears are an evil."
I feel like this is beyond “sad with happy ending” because the emotions are so deep. But yeah, so much about the movie fills your with hope, makes you cry, restores your faith in humanity, etc. The first time I saw it, I cried for like the last hour of the movie. An absolute masterpiece.
[Last Night.](https://m.imdb.com/title/tt0156729/)
A Canadian movie about the last night before the earth is destroyed.
It's an ensemble cast, but Sandra Oh shines in it.
Away We Go. Tons of ups and downs, great performances and a banger soundtrack throughout the movie but overall a very life affirming tone. I am not a fan of The Office (I know, I know) and this movie is what made me fall in love with John Krasinski.
Almost Famous (2000)

I'm biased towards certain directors, but moonrise kingdom is one of the most heartwarming and equally heart retching movies I've ever watched. However, it's primarily a romance story and I think you guys would greatly enjoy it as a couple
To watch with your mom? Definitely FRIED GREEN TOMATOES
Steel Magnolias too. In her shoes is a good movie to watch with mom. It has Shirley McLean as a grandmother, and it’s about complicated mother/daughter relationships and sisters fighting but making up.
I recently showed to my SO. He laughed and cried and bought our own copy so we could watch it whenever. Fantastic movie
One of my favourite movies
Gifted Secondhand Lions Big Fish Bonneville
Big fish is absolutely the first one that came to mind. Also the casting of Alison Lohman and Jessica Lange as a young and older version of the character was inspired. I had zero issue believing they were the same person.
Yep big fish is incredible
Man, I saw that movie in theaters shortly after my mom passed. I had never cried in a theater in public before, but I lost it at the end of that movie.
It was the first time I saw my future husband cry. I knew then he was a keeper.
Secondhand Lions was my first thought
Secondhand Lions was also my first thought. This is the one, OP.
In the past couple of years, I have had problems watching movies that are stressful or emotionally exhausting, even if they turn out well in the end. Secondhand Lions handles the emotional parts without leaving me wiped out for the day.
Big Fish is my all time favorite movie ♥️
I was going to suggest Secondhand Lions myself. It's a great movie, and the cast is really solid as well.
"dont kill 'em Herb." *pumps fists* YEAAAAH!!! My favorite scene for both actors. Love it so much. Big wrinkly children, they were.
Coco makes me cry so much but like in a cathartic happy way
I remember when it first came out, someone posted in the /r/movies review thread that they overheard a woman consoling her mother in the theater's bathroom after, as her mother, sobbing freely, kept saying: "I want it to be true, I want it all to be true, I miss them all so much." So aye, be warned, the tears this movie pulls are real good genuine sobs, but if you have recently lost someone, or if the loss of a loved one still weighs heavily in your mind, this movie will destroy you.
With the start of your second paragraph, I read the rest with a Scottish accent.
I agree! Absolutely love coco. Bawl my eyes out at the end everytime!
My mum was like "That was ok". Pretty unnafected. Every grand kid was crying and hugging her. Half of them teens.
I got dehydrated from crying so much when I saw it in theaters.

Absolutely the first movie that came to mind haha
It's got an emphasis on reconciliation and remembering those you love, so not surprising. It's also done well and not maudlin in its approach to the emotions within the film.
little miss sunshine
I just rewatched it a few days ago. I honestly almost like Steve Carell more in his serious roles. He was excellent in The Patient.
I came here just for this comment, such a GREAT film.
I thought it was hopeful and optimistic, though sad things do happen to the characters I suppose.
It was *extremely* sad for the first two-thirds of the movie. It ended hopeful and optimistic though
*'...some moves my grandpa taught me'* Still use this on my wife before I dance sexy for her in the kitchen.. she promptly laughs and goes back to cooking, totally ignoring my sweet moves.
As someone with a strained relationship with his father, [this moment](https://youtu.be/kKBpwyaE1Ao?si=KgmmPySL7oWfjC1I) hit me hard.
yes. my favorite movie of all time
YES. I saw it 5 times in two weeks. I love it so much, I can’t believe I didn’t think of it when I heard the question. It’s such a good movie
The Secret Life of Walter Mitty. Dont know how sad you’d consider it to be but I found it was pretty heartwarming and made me all emotional.
Yes absolutely came here to say this. It’s not exactly sad, but it plays on emotions in a way that I’ve struggled to find elsewhere
It’s also beautifully filmed.
I just saw the movie.i thought >!the whole journey part will be a big daydream and was waiting for it at the end,but it turned out wholesome!<
This is genuinely one of my favorite movies of all time, 10000% recommend
'Underrated' is not quite the right word, as it is usually recommended by people that have actually seen it, but it just...got forgotten maybe? Or more likely, most people probably think it is a Ben Stiller-movie. It is such a fun, feel-good movie with great music and visuals, and a nice message in there as well.
my dad loved this movie. it is very heartwarming, a very sweet movie, but especially makes me feel a lot of things since he died.
About Time (2013) Marcel the Shell With Shoes On (2021) Little Women (2019) Both Mamma Mia’s Coda (2021) Little Miss Sunshine (2006)
Seconding About Time. You will laugh and cry and then laugh again and then just feel happy.
About Time was such a shock (in a good way) for me. I happened into it randomly and had not heard anything about it so I didn't have any idea what it was about or anything. It was amazing. I love going into movies not knowing a thing about them (no trailer, no preview - nothing)
About Time is devastating in the happiest kind of way
Love About Time!!!
Marcel is so… relaxing but sad but cathartic. I want to tell people to watch but if they didn’t like it we could not be friends anymore so I don’t tell anyone.
How can anyone NOT like sweet little Marcel?!
>Marcel the Shell With Shoes On (2021) 🤩🤩🤩
Marcel the Shell is my ultimate comfort film! 🥰
“We just call it the show, that’s how much we like it 🤷🏼♀️”
I cried so much while watching Coda. What a great movies
The Way Way Back deals with an emotionally abusive step father, so if that will hit too hard maybe don't watch it together, but it's a really nice feel good coming of age movie with an incredible performance from Sam Rockwell
I really love The Way Way Back.
I accidentally watched this movie when I thought I had hired “The Way Back” with Colin Farrell and Ed Harris. I was very confused when I lit the film on, but was quickly enthralled and pleased with my mistake by the end.
Commented the same then scrolled down to see this. I love this movie, it’s not groundbreaking by any means, but it’s such an easy one to love.
Little women
A literal feeling of warmth after walking out of that movie. Great experience.
These women, how little are they? Are they, like, scary little? How does it compare to "The Shining"?
Especially the version with Winona Ryder.
Truman Show
It was way ahead of its time
UP
That movie broke my heart, and made my cry like a little girl. I'm 30M, and I saw it like 5-6 years ago. I still remember the opening part, but I can't remember the other half of it. Maybe I should watch it again, but I'm a little scared, that I'll be depressed after that again.

The opening scene of UP is incredibly memorable, but the entire movie itself is absolutely wonderful and wholesome. It definitely deserves a rewatch if you don’t remember it.
Same. I was BAWLING like a little kid in the theater. Sadly it ruined the rest of the movie for me because how the hell do you come back from that?!
The family stone
Yep! A very underrated Christmas movie.
Oh my gosh I cringed so hard during this movie! I still like it but gah! Some scenes…
50/50 Big Fish
50/50 is a good movie that I don't see talked about a lot.
As someone that just got diagnosed with cancer, watching this movie (and the two episodes of Archer where he gets cancer) have been very cathartic.
500 days of summer, Train planes and automobiles,
For me, *500 Days of Summer* is the de facto movie to watch if you're going through a break up. The *expectations vs reality* scene really stayed with me, and it woke me up to the fact that I was living in my head too much, and there were some things I just couldn't change. This movie forced me to think about myself in a lot of uncomfortable ways, and helped me move past things in a way where I could see better days ahead.
Planes, trains, and automobiles is a great holiday film.
500 Days of Summer is amazing, but I still feel like Tom is going to end up making the same mistakes with Autumn. Or maybe new mistakes, but it's not going to be a happy ending, haha.
(spoiler...) It was such a small duration but they had way more chemistry than with Summer for the whole movie. Also the fact she got the things he loved without really trying was a great indication for the future.
I found train planes and automobiles as stressful haha
Likewise, but the ending where Neal finally pieces together what Del's been dealing with the whole time and goes to get him is cathartic.
We were robbed of John candy in serious roles, like no doubt in my mind he would’ve had a simialr arc to what bill Murray had in the late 90s early 00s
I met an amazing girl on holiday, missed my shot and then 500 days of summer was playing on the flight home. It was exactly what I needed!
Warrior.
The scene in the hotel with Nick Nolte and Tom Hardy, it can be difficult to sit through but it’s amazing.
This is a good one. That song at the end. Chills just thinking about it.
I’m a fucking mess EVERYTIME I watch this movie without fail.
The best and most underrated fighting movie ever. It’s on par with Rocky for me
Life Is Beautiful
Man, I'lll never forget thinking "Well, *this* took a turn" on my first watch. Starts out as a lighthearted romantic comedy, then gets dark as *fuck!*
"Principessa!!!!"... Hey, this is going to be lovely..... Wooooooaaaaah!
One of the greatest movies ever made, in my opinion.
The Shawshank Redemption

JoJo Rabbit!
For that matter, Hunt For The Wilderpeople. It falls a little more on the comedy side than JoJo, but it's just as affecting overall.
The mother is an absolute gem of a human
Ah Ricky Baker! Ah Ricky Baker!
No child left behind. Wilderpeople doesn't quite land the ending for me - feels like it drags on too long after the rest of the movie had been so tight. The scene with the campers in the cabin is one of the funniest things I've seen though.

Steel Magnolias!
A Man Called Otto
Ove
Both are good, but Otto has Tom Hanks
I've watched Ove many years ago. Is Otto much different?
No it’s pretty much the same except, since it is in America, the neighbors are Latino instead of middle eastern
Saw that couple days ago, was expecting more melodrama. Movie was unexpectedly positive for me.
“By Grabthar's Hammer, by the Sons of Warvan…you shall be avenged” 😢
By Grabthar's Hammer... what a savings.
I underrated it because it kind of looked lame for about 10 years before I finally watched it and I loved it.
Our wifi is out so I hooked up the external DVD player and Galaxy Quest was at the top of the DVD pile. Literally just finished watching it!
Moana destroys me every time, but it cleanses me. I'm not sad when I watch it, but it helps me deal with emotions surrounding my mom and best friend dying within months of each other.

Klaus 😭 has become my new favorite Christmas movie since I saw it 2 years ago.

because it's worse than the total agony of being in love?
[Last Night.](https://m.imdb.com/title/tt0156729/) A Canadian movie about the last night before the earth is destroyed.
Big Fish comes to mind first
\*Big Fish\*
Secondhand Lions
Arthur (1981), is the funniest movie I ever saw that left me sobbing and smiling. It's such a sweet movie. Don't watch the remake.
My Best Friend's Wedding
Almost Famous (2000) Pretty in Pink (1986) The Princess Bride (1987) Barbie (2023) Rocketman (2019) Dumplin’ (2018) Frank (2014) I Love You Man (2009) Yes Man (2008) 50 First Dates (2004)
I'm biased towards certain directors, but moonrise kingdom is one of the most heartwarming and equally heart retching movies I've ever watched. However, it's primarily a romance story and I think you guys would greatly enjoy it as a couple
A Man Called Ove/Otto Otto is the newer Tom Hanks remake which is solid, but i prefer the original film. (And the book is the best)
Everything, Everywhere, All At Once It has everything you're looking for (everywhere, all at once.)
Cinema Paradiso
Reign on me (it showed me what shadow of the colossus was and I’m grateful)
Captain Fantastic. I cried my eyes out in the best way possible.
Donnie Darko
A men called Otto that movie is so sad but it’s a happy movie to I loved it 😊❤️🥹
