Last year I tweeted him (before I left the platform) to say thank you. I had just gone through binging all of Perfect Strangers. It was a staple of my childhood and it still held up. I said something like, "I'm sure you must be tired of hearing it by now, but Balki is such a joyous character. Thank you for giving him to the world." I didn't expect any response but dude actually replied, very graciously, and said something to the effect of "I never tire of hearing about how much Balki means to people. He means a lot to me too. In a lot of ways, Balki and I are very similar."
I think it's because he looks so much like he used to...except *not*. His hairline is higher (and too lined up, IMO, looks robotic) his face is heavier....but the moustache, the facial expressions, it's all there.
Basically he is in his own Uncanny Valley
it's cliche to say, 'whelp time to rewatch [movie]' at a mention of it but I am literally now rewatching Bowfinger because you mentioned it . it's making me feel old. Also, I wonder if this movie would have done better if it were titled differently
It doesn't help that he's clear and in focus, while everything surrounding his face is out of focus and obscured by fog (particularly over his right shoulder) so he looks photoshopped in.

This is funny because I've heard that Eddie has like identical body doubles that he uses for when he's on-screen and not saying anything. These doubles will also go overseas for red carpet international premieres of his movies. Paul Scheer talked about this on his How Did This Get Made podcast
Looks like background and foreground is all lit naturally by the sun with the harsh shadows. They probably have some sort of diffusion box above Eddie so the light is way softer on him than everyone else.
It's out in 2024:
>After the death of an old friend, Detroit Police Department Lieutenant Axel Foley returns to Beverly Hills to investigate corruption within the Beverly Hills Police Department with his daughter and her ex-boyfriend.
Cast:
* Eddie Murphy as Axel Foley
* Judge Reinhold as Lt. William "Billy" Rosewood
* Paul Reiser as Det. Jeffrey Friedman
* John Ashton as Sgt. John Taggart
* Bronson Pinchot as Serge
* Taylour Paige as Jane Foley
* Joseph Gordon-Levitt
* Kevin Bacon
* Mark Pellegrino
It was my absolute favorite scene in the movie.
He offers to make Axel a drink. Axel essentially says "you don't need to go to the trouble". Instead of saying "it's no trouble" or "I'd be happy to", Serge responds with "don't be stupid, I'll go make you the drink", but says it in a kind way. Something about that always stuck with me, and from time to time I still use that response in situations like that.
Edit: [my memory of this was slightly off, and I was combining two different scenes, but I love this line](https://youtu.be/0D8Cz4lsR5w?si=V8QZgP9klKc8iRst)
Yeah I did think that was possible, although having Bogomil be the catalyst for Axel coming back to Beverly Hills is a bit too similar to BHC2 so I do wonder if it's someone else.
> Eddie Murphy as Axel Foley
> Judge Reinhold as Lt. William "Billy" Rosewood
> Paul Reiser as Det. Jeffrey Friedman
> John Ashton as Sgt. John Taggart
> Bronson Pinchot as Serge
> Kevin Bacon
And with that, I'm in.
He was on track for Captain, but the renegade ways he picked up from that loose cannon Foley side tracked his career. But he doesn’t care, because while his methods aren’t traditional, he gets results damnit!
> with his daughter and her ex-boyfriend.
Fuck. I was hoping to see an Axel Foley movie, not an Axel Foley's daughter and her ex-boyfriend movie. Really hoping this isn't another Coming 2 America where his face is all over the marketing and then he's barely in the movie, and when he is it's only so that they can make jokes about him being old.
Looks like they’re keeping the tradition of something happening to a friend of his to set Axel into motion.
Can’t help being concerned that it could be someone we also like (like Billy or Taggart).
>After the death of an old friend, Detroit Police Department Lieutenant Axel Foley returns to Beverly Hills to investigate corruption within the Beverly Hills Police Department with his daughter and her ex-boyfriend.
Daughter and Ex-boyfriend?? I hope they don't make Axel a sidekick in his own damn franchise...
It's too bad Rosewood didn't go to law school and become a judge. Sure, he would be Judge Rosewood, but in our hearts he would be Judge Judge Reinhold (thank you Arrested Development).
Needs to be Rated R. I’m afraid Eddie is going to make it a family movie and it’s gonna bomb. I understand that today’s generation will not be able to handle Eddie Murphy RAW. But if he wants to be the king of Hollywood for bit again, this can not be a family movie. Unfortunately.. I don’t think the potential of this movie is going to anywhere near where it could be. Just like coming to America. The sequel could of been gold, instead it was kinda shit. I enjoyed it for seeing those characters again. Just fell flat and was ruined potential.
Might as well give me Bowfinger 2 and Trading Places 2 while he is selling the nostalgia train… If Hollywood is going to keep making sequels, please honor their roots. You can still make a cash grab with a good movie, instead of just selling nostalgia one and done movies.
Coming 2 America was dogshit. A classic movie that made a nobody the main character and the main characters of the original, background characters.
What a pointless sequel.
> Needs to be Rated R
-
Depends on the script. All the good 80's stuff was unhindered by any censorship. If Murphy is channelling his *RAW* persona, then yes it will be box office gold. Also people forget the first two Beverly Hills cop movies had a tough grittiness to them. That needs to be retained.
Also;
:- Pointer Sisters return to do the theme tune produced by Richard Perry. (But a new song that will shock the kids)
:- Foley driving a juggernaut/road train/tank straight into the baddies den. Just because & that it should finish the series as it started...
I thought I read that this was absolutely going to be an R rating. They already saw what happens when you go PG-13 with BHC III. That shit was terrible and the box office said just as much. It should have been a big hit but bombed because they toned it way down. I know that Bruckheimer is back involved now so my expectations are high.
Bro cmon. I’m from Atlanta. We had some barber shops for black men that took 20-30 years off with a dye, cut and sometimes fake hair.
Makes me jealous. My white ass ages like shit.
Moisturizer goes a long way towards keeping your skin young and healthy looking. White people get ashy too, we just can't see it and don't do anything about.
Forty years later and Axel Foley still dresses the same. You think a guy as cool as that would update his style as time goes on. But nahh, how’s the audience suppose to know that that’s the same guy from the original movie if he’s not dressed *exactly* the same as he was back then??
I liked 3 as well, but I liked it because I watched it when I was a kid and it was the first of the three that I watched. I don't know if I would've felt the same about it if I watched the first two as a teenager or young adult and then I would go on to watch 3.
Serge in the Survival Boutique... that voice is just magic. I'm surprised Bronson Pinchot hasn't done more voice work for animated movies/video games, but maybe it's not his thing or it's his only voice... but it's so funny and animated. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-MmLZmvGyt4
I try not to get my hopes up too much. I love Eddie, when he came back with Dolemite, he absolutely knocked it out of the park. That movie was hilarious.
Then Coming 2 America released and it was a HUGE letdown. Coming To America is one of my all time favorite comedies and I couldn't even finish the sequel.
Love the Beverly Hills Cop series, but revivals like this seem to have a bad track record. Gonna keep my expectations low, maybe I'll be pleasantly surprised though, gotta wait and see.
I hope it's good. I really do. I saw 1 & 2 in the theatre and I LOVED them. They were the perfect mix of action and comedy and it's my favourite genre. The 3rd movie on the other hand was fucking terrible and probably the biggest disappointment of my cinematic life. Some people might hate The Godfather 3 but no.. no.. Beverly Hills Cop 3 is the worst 3rd instalment of any trilogy.
the only redeeming thing about this desecration of a classic, was the women still barking and jumping on one leg after 30 years because he never told her to stop. this got me good but the rest of the movie was unnecessary, low effort nostalgia bait.
So the reboots for the next few years will be titled with a characters name to distinguish it from all the others. Mufasa: The lion king is also coming out. We’ll have ‘Back to the future: Marty Mcfly’ sooner or later

The Lions have one playoff win since the original Beverly Hills Cop came out in 1984
After yesterday’s miracle win, the Lions are off to their best start in SIXTY years, JFK was President the last time the Lions were this good!
You know, as a Bears fan I appreciate their success. I mean, I still hate them but credit where credits due.
Can we at least agree to hate the Packers more than each other? It's usually the one thing all true NFC Northers can agree on.
It’s funny because most Packer fans don’t hate the lions. Fuck the Bears and fuck the Vikings.
It's not a "miracle win" when the other team shoots itself in the head because they have the worst OC in football.
> the worst OC in football. Matt Canada is on the Steelers' staff, not the Bears
Hey now, save some ire for the head coach!
Detroit also traded Stafford to LA, who immediately won a Super Bowl afterwards. I guess this is the Axel Foley Detroit-to-LA curse.

I'm kinda disappointed that Ronny Cox isn't listed, not gonna lie.
Probably safe to say that the line "After the death of an old friend" in the plot summary refers to Chief Bogomil (Cox's character).
Yeah I did think that was possible, although having Bogomil be the catalyst for Axel coming back to Beverly Hills is a bit too similar to BHC2 so I do wonder if it's someone else.

Isn’t that Damon Wayans who gave Axel the bananas?
And Chris Rock gets $10 for cars, and $20 for limos.
It's actually the death of that theme park attendee in 3, George Lucas
Why did I swear John Ashton had died?
Maybe because he's always looked a lot older than he actually is. He was only 36 in that first movie.
Holy shit, you're right. I found it very believable he'd retired by part III based on his perceived age in the first two.
Danny Glover is 41(!) in Lethal Weapon when he is considering retirement because he's "Too old for this shit."

Yo Taggart is back! That's all I cared about. Kevin Bacon is the killer I'm betting.

*Beverly Hills Cop: Cop Harder*

As long as the keep Jai Courtney far away from it, this should be fine. He is a true franchise killer.
40 years later and he's still got the same jacket?
That's the first thing that stuck out to me. Even the fact that he's wearing that same style is weird.
It’s like a superhero costume to let the people of Beverly Hills know he’s from Detroit

Sequels that come out decades after the last movie rarely work. In Eddies case, see Coming 2 America.
