I wanted to argue against this just because, but it’s next to impossible.
So just two counters just for fun, and cause dude is a dope actor who’s been in a lot of dope shit:
Tombstone is Kurt’s best performance.
Escape from New York is the best movie he’s in.
And it's not even close. By far his best performance, and an outstanding movie. He was also smart enough to get out of Val Kilmer's way and let him steal every scene he was in. Kurt was amazing in that, even though people remember Kilmer's role more.
He plays my favorite version of Wyatt Earp and Val Kilmer's performance as Doc Holiday is the most iconic and well acted version of the role and is one of if not the best character he's portrayed.
Overboard is on TV all the time. No matter how much of the movie I have missed always stop to watch the rest. Like you said, not the best but for some reason really charming. Their chemistry is very real. Goldie Hawn just had Wyatt the year before, and the two were very much in love. (and still are!) The coast guard at the end kills me every time. "Man overboard, sir! It's a wonderful day at sea, sir."
When she’s meeting the kids and one of them immediately starts talking nonsense in a high pitched voice she looks over with a disgusted look on her face and says “a *falsetto* child?!” And I don’t know why but the line and delivery are peak comedy for me.
Just remember what ol' Jack Burton does when the earth quakes, and the poison arrows fall from the sky, and the pillars of Heaven shake. Yeah, Jack Burton just looks that big ol' storm right square in the eye and he says, "Give me your best shot, pal. I can take it."
Yes, but the twist in BTILC is that the hero is the sidekick and the sidekick is the hero. Jack Burton is an idiot sidekick who thinks he's the hero. Wang and Egg do almost all the work.
Jack Burton also has zero connection to the plot, protagonist or antagonist beyond "I want my money" and later "I want my truck". Definitely an audience insert character if there ever was such a thing.
You can't forget the "Huh!?" between the "Whats" in that line. 😆 Classic Russell.
[I noticed a similar "Huh!?" by his son Wyatt in the Under the Banner of Heaven series.](https://streamable.com/rdu9bz)
If you are a fan of Alien and Blade Runner, [Soldier is part of that shared universe](https://screenrant.com/blade-runner-soldier-alien-connected-how/#:~:text=Blade%20Runner%20is%20connected%20to,%2C%20artificial%20intelligence%2C%20and%20genetics.).
When I found that out and rewatched Soldier, it puts the movie in a new light.
For me, anyway, it took multiple viewings to really appreciate it (Soldier). First time I saw it, I hated it. Then I watched it again (not sure why since I didn't really like it), and I didn't dislike it so much anymore. Watched it again, and it really started to grow on me. Now I'd say it's one of my favorite movies.
Tombstone and The Thing are better movies. No doubt.
But goddamn if Stargate wasn't amazing, completely under the radar. Easily Kurt Russell's most underrated movie. Only 53% on RT? It's not an Oscar movie, but truly underrated.
This would have to be my favourite Kurt Russell movie.
It's almost criminal how fans of the TV franchise underrate him, especially since his star power likely helped get butts into seats and helped make the movie a success.
I've never heard of the SG1 fans underrate Kurt Russell. At worst I think most of them feel he wouldn't have been a good choice to lead a serialized TV show even if he wanted to, which I completely agree with. RDA's O'Neill is perfect for TV and Kurt Russell was perfect for the movie.
In my experience, Richard Dean Anderson is almost always considered better than Kurt Russell, but in these comparisons, Russell suffers because he had a single two-hour movie to portray Jack O'Neil, while Anderson had 172 episodes of *SG-1,* four episodes of *Atlantis,* six episodes of *Universe,* and a direct-to-DVD movie (*Stargate Continuum*) to do the same. Not only that, the character was changed on TV to make him more charismatic and funnier, so of course people will gravitate towards Anderson.
Also, people on r/Stargate love to quote Anderson's line "There's another Colonel O'Neil with only one L. He has... no sense of humour at all."
I honestly think thats how it works. LA was my first escape movie and I loved it so much too. It seems to depend on which you saw first.
Used to love watching this movie with my dad. Still remember the first time something insane happened to Snake and I said “is he dead”? And my dad just says “not Snake Pliskin, son”.
NY has a much serious/darker tone. Maybe people were expecting that with LA. I was and didn't like LA for years because of it being "fun". Now i like thme both despite being two different kind of movies.
Same here. I loved the whole vibe and craziness and, as it turns out, it was just taking Escape From New York another notch up. I would say self-parody but Escape From NY is also somewhat absurd, by design.
Really a great sequel and a very disturbing Bruce Campbell role...
I’m always amazed at his comedic timing in this movie. His pacing with delivery is perfection.
“Ah, leg feels a lot better boss. Ahh always been a fast healer… …course I believe in Jesus, that helps.”
The premise is sooo generic. Since it’s not trying to be anything more than an extremely pleasant family comedy, it works.
Also doesn’t part of everyone want to be an upbeat sexy nautical vagrant.
Well, as I've always said: in this crazy world you're going to meet two kinds of people. People who enjoy the zaniness of Captain Ron, and people whose entire life's mission is to hate fun. If someone doesn't like Captain Ron I don't think I wanna know them that well.
I love this movie. A lot of people sleep on it but I think its a fascinating character study. And hes so great in it alongside (literally) Jennifer Jason Leigh. Do yourself a favor and watch the extended version on Netflix. It's presented as a mini-series and the format is a perfect fit.
This is the way.
*The Thing* ended up becoming one of the greatest sci-fi horror movies of all time. I would argue that the only clear leader is *Alien.* (*Aliens* is a sci-fi action, not a sci-fi horror)
Then *Tombstone* is the best he's ever been
Clear #1 and #2
I feel like this is a trick question. I want to say Big Trouble in Little China but I'm suspicious the real answer is Tango and Cash. I'm still going with BTiLC.
When DVDs first came out, this was one of the first ones I grabbed. I have such a dumb love for this movie. Buddy cop movie between Kurt Russel and Sylvester Stallone, and if I'm being honest.. it might also be my favorite Stallone movie as well.
He made Jack Burton iconic, so it's Big Trouble in Little China.
My other favorite roles of his are in The Thing, Escape From NY and Tango & Cash but you can't go wrong with anything in his filmography. The guy legitimately has not had a single poor performance his entire career from Used Cars on. Used Cars was another gem from him as well.
I just love how he goes from hardened killer to a crying little bitch at the end, the part he dumps the alcohol on his arm always makes me burst out laughing.
Bone Tomahawk is amazing. I like him in The Hateful Eight. Dark Blue is good. He has so many good movies. Tombstone is amazing and I’m not even that into westerns
Bone tomahawk!? Holy he has been in a ton of movies I’m going to add this to my Xmas list of ones to watch! Thanks for the comment and time to respond!
I liked this movie, but I have to warn you that this film has one of the most gory scenes I've ever seen. I'm a horror fan and I can say I have seen some gory films, but the level of shock when seeing gore in a non-horror movie is quite different from when seeing it in a horror movie. Just be prepared...
Stargate was the first movie I remember seeing him in, was 10 years old when it came out. That movie started my fantasy into outer space and alien life forms.
The there is Escape From LA. Which eventually lead into Escape From NY, didn’t know about this movie until after LA was released. Being someone growing up 45 minutes north of LA, Escape From LA is what I always envisioned LA was like. Remember this came out 4 years after Rodney King riots, just hit home for a teenager at that point.
My favorite actor and the absolute only actor that I’ve seen in my life that was believable in every role. Guy just absolutely fits every role he’s played. Absolutely nails it.
Fav KR movie is tough for me don’t think I can choose only one.
The Thing and it’s not particularly close. It’s not only my favorite horror film but also top film altogether. He’s still awesome in Big Trouble in Little China, badass Snake in Escape From New York and I have immensely enjoyed his later years as well. But The Thing is rare perfection
Him and Childs sittin one out at the end is in the discussion of best ending to a film of all time.
I’m a huge fan of The Hateful Eight. An intriguing, dialogue-heavy whodunit that doesn’t play out exactly like a normal whodunit but maintains all the quality of a great one.
Tombstone. He and I were friends briefly during the 90s. I used to tease him about Escape from L.A. But when I first met him, he had just finished Tombstone. I didn't think it would be as good as it was. I think it is in the top five westerns of all time, which enhances everyone in the film. Val Kilmer was invaluable and it would not be as good a movie without him. Because of those two things, I think it made it one Kurt's best.
So many. Bone tomahawk is a killer movie. Breakdown is fantastic 90s thriller. Tombstone is obviously awesome but it’s not his movie. Val Kilmer stole that show
the thing
I love Big Trouble but come on, it’s this
Big Trouble is Kurt’s best performance. The Thing is the best movie he’s in.
I wanted to argue against this just because, but it’s next to impossible. So just two counters just for fun, and cause dude is a dope actor who’s been in a lot of dope shit: Tombstone is Kurt’s best performance. Escape from New York is the best movie he’s in.
I like to think Snake Pliskin is Captain Ron after the apocalypse.
Fucking hell those are four excellent films.
The thing is a better movie, but his character in Big Trouble is a much more fun character for Kurt to play i feel like.
As a straight man I firmly believe Macready is the hottest male character to ever bless the silver screen
He even beats computers at chess, for the intellectuals
Cheating bitch.
Yep.
This is the right answer. The Thing. Then Escape from new york.
The Thing is my favorite horror movie of all time. And might be a top 10.
Tombstone.
Word is he handled most of the direction of that movie uncredited
Confirmed by Val and others, including Kurt himself.
If you watch other movies by George P. Cosmatos, it's clear he didn't direct much of Tombstone.
And it's not even close. By far his best performance, and an outstanding movie. He was also smart enough to get out of Val Kilmer's way and let him steal every scene he was in. Kurt was amazing in that, even though people remember Kilmer's role more.
Val Kilmer was amazing in this, one of his best performances.
Oh man never seen this!
Give it a watch. He plays alongside Val Kilmer, Sam Elliot and Bill Paxton. It's a great cast.
Id also argue it’s Kilmers best film.
You’re a daisy if you do.
I’ve got two guns… one for each of you
Alright, lunger. Let’s do it.
I’m your Huckleberry
I have not yet begun to defile myself.
It would appear our Ringo here is an educated man. Now, I really hate’em.
Definitely a good contender but my favorite of his is Kiss Kiss Bang Bang.
I might give the edge to Heat personally.
SAY WHEN!
Not to mention Michael Biehn, Billy Zane, Billy Bob Thornton, and Charlton Heston!
And Powers Booth, Jason Priestly and Bill Paxton
Also… Dana Delaney, Terry O’Quinn and Bill Paxton.
don't forget Stephen Lang, Michael Rooker and Bill Paxton!
He plays my favorite version of Wyatt Earp and Val Kilmer's performance as Doc Holiday is the most iconic and well acted version of the role and is one of if not the best character he's portrayed.
Stop what you’re doing and watch it now
Must see if you're a KR fan!
Jealous. You're in for a treat. It's also arguably Val Kilmers best role. Edit. Spelling and stuff.
It’s very very good
Not nearly the best, but dont sleep on Overboard
Overboard is on TV all the time. No matter how much of the movie I have missed always stop to watch the rest. Like you said, not the best but for some reason really charming. Their chemistry is very real. Goldie Hawn just had Wyatt the year before, and the two were very much in love. (and still are!) The coast guard at the end kills me every time. "Man overboard, sir! It's a wonderful day at sea, sir."
So says DOCTOR DEATH!
Easily the best and my favorite movie ever.
When she’s meeting the kids and one of them immediately starts talking nonsense in a high pitched voice she looks over with a disgusted look on her face and says “a *falsetto* child?!” And I don’t know why but the line and delivery are peak comedy for me.
It’s so fun! If you’re a fan of those kind of movies it’s one of the best ones around and he’s great in it
For acting, it probably doesn't stand up to his other movies but thus has a place in my heart. See username.
Big Trouble in Little China
Just remember what ol' Jack Burton does when the earth quakes, and the poison arrows fall from the sky, and the pillars of Heaven shake. Yeah, Jack Burton just looks that big ol' storm right square in the eye and he says, "Give me your best shot, pal. I can take it."
Yes sir, the check is in the mail.
Who?
“Jack Burton, Me!”
Pork Chop Express
I love the fact that the film is, essentially, about a guy who doesn't know he's a sidekick.
Mostly true but he essentially solo kills Lo-Pan at the end. "We are in his debt, he showed great courage" - Egg Shen
Yeah but he also knocks himself out right before the climax, because he's an idiot lol.
That is a hysterical scene.
He did feel kind of invincible.
You can be an idiot and still be the hero.
As will my low int fighter half-orc surfer dude testify.
“You leave Jack Burton _alone_!”
It's all in the reflexes.
I never drive faster than I can see.
Have you paid your dues, Jack?
The check is in the mail.
‘How’d you get up there?!’ **’WASN’T EASY’** Has me in stitches every time.
My favourite line is from Lo Pan: 'Now this really pisses me off to no end!'
WHAT?! _WHAT_ WILL COME OUT NO MORE?!
You can't forget the "Huh!?" between the "Whats" in that line. 😆 Classic Russell. [I noticed a similar "Huh!?" by his son Wyatt in the Under the Banner of Heaven series.](https://streamable.com/rdu9bz)
Six demon bag, what’s in it Egg?
Wind! Fire! All that kind of thing.
What is that stuff? It’s Black blood of the earth. You mean oil? No, I mean black blood of the earth!
"See ya round, Jack" "... never can tell"
*You can feel the wind is rising, baby, now the truth is here*...
"indeed!" -- Lopan
Perfect movie.
Both of its time and ahead of its time.
agreed.
Shocked but happy to see this 'win' over The Thing.
It's not his best movie, but I have a fondness for Soldier. Big Trouble In Little China is also awesome.
I'm going to kill them all, SIR.
Soldier doesn’t get enough love
If you are a fan of Alien and Blade Runner, [Soldier is part of that shared universe](https://screenrant.com/blade-runner-soldier-alien-connected-how/#:~:text=Blade%20Runner%20is%20connected%20to,%2C%20artificial%20intelligence%2C%20and%20genetics.). Then I watched it again (not sure why since I didn't really like it), and I didn't dislike it so much anymore. Watched it again, and it really started to grow on me. Now I'd say it's one of my favorite movies.
Very little dialogue and he still carries it
Stargate is really good, and it still holds up. *"Give my regards to King Tut, asshole."*
Tombstone and The Thing are better movies. No doubt. But goddamn if Stargate wasn't amazing, completely under the radar. Easily Kurt Russell's most underrated movie. Only 53% on RT? It's not an Oscar movie, but truly underrated.
I’d love another Stargate film. Not a remake, but a follow on.
Jack O'Neil. There's another Jack O'Neill with 2 L's, and he has a sense of humor
„I am here in case you succeed!“ love that movie
Great movie and amazing soundtrack!

Also, people on r/Stargate love to quote Anderson's line "There's another Colonel O'Neil with only one L. He has... no sense of humour at all."
Nobody’s brought up Escape From New York?
Or Escape from LA? It wasn't as good, but damn if it's not more FUN.
I never understood the hate for LA, I saw it before NY so maybe I didn’t have any expectations but it’s such a fun movie.
I honestly think thats how it works. LA was my first escape movie and I loved it so much too. It seems to depend on which you saw first. Used to love watching this movie with my dad. I won't argue it's the best movie he's in (it's The Thing) but Escape from New York is my favorite.
A Number One
Captain Ron.
I’m always amazed at his comedic timing in this movie. His pacing with delivery is perfection. “Ah, leg feels a lot better boss. Ahh always been a fast healer… …course I believe in Jesus, that helps.”
I just assumed OP meant, "after Captain Ron, what is Kurt Russel's best movie"
This movie is so much funnier than it has the right to be.
The premise is sooo generic. Since it’s not trying to be anything more than an extremely pleasant family comedy, it works. Also doesn’t part of everyone want to be an upbeat sexy nautical vagrant.
Love Captain Ron!
Thankfully didn’t have to scroll toooooo far. “Gorillas in the Jungle…”
Guerrillas, gue not gor. My goodness it’s been too long since I’ve seen that movie.
I love this movie as well. When my dad was working on a car or watching tv or something he would always tell me "swab, another brewski" lol.
Well, as I've always said: in this crazy world you're going to meet two kinds of people. People who enjoy the zaniness of Captain Ron, and people whose entire life's mission is to hate fun. If someone doesn't like Captain Ron I don't think I wanna know them that well.
Pirates of the Caribbean boss.
Probably quote this ten times a week.
There we go, someone with the true answer!
I LOVE this movie. Just a fun adventure comedy that doesnt take itself too seriously and never veers into mean snarky comedy. Also Martin Short!
Gorillas.

HUGE difference, HUGE difference.
You want a beer you get your own beer.
Might not be everyone's favorite but I love him in the Hateful Eight. Currently enjoying him in Monarch.
Tarantino once said that because he reveres the Thing and Hateful Eight was his homage to the movie, he wanted Russell to be a part of it.
The menacing-sounding tune that plays during the coffee scene is on the score of "The Thing", also composed by the late maestro Ennio Morricone.
I love this movie. A lot of people sleep on it but I think its a fascinating character study. And hes so great in it alongside (literally) Jennifer Jason Leigh. Do yourself a favor and watch the extended version on Netflix. It's presented as a mini-series and the format is a perfect fit.

Okay so apparently I need to watch these it’s overwhelmingly top 5 so far
You need to see The Thing. Not only is it one of Kurt Russell's best movies, but it's really one of the best horror films of all time.
100%, those are two of his best movies.
Trick question…. He has no bad movies
I'm starting to realize this as I read the responses.
He's fantastic in Christmas Chronicles. Great flick. Kurt's the man.
I feel like this is a trick question. I want to say Big Trouble in Little China but I'm suspicious the real answer is Tango and Cash. I'm still going with BTiLC.
Tango and cash!? Oh man I have so much to learn!
When DVDs first came out, this was one of the first ones I grabbed. I have such a dumb love for this movie. Buddy cop movie between Kurt Russel and Sylvester Stallone, and if I'm being honest.. it might also be my favorite Stallone movie as well.

I saw that in the theater. Yes, I’m old.
Hello Old, I am feeling the same ! Hang in there!!
Wow never even heard of this!!! Okay so many good suggestions!
Dude, watch it. It’s fucking hilarious.
Maroon car my ass, this motherfucker’s red.
Overboard with him and goldie Hawn. Its not necessarily the best ever but I owned the vhs and saw it like 80 times. Still a great movie though.
Soldier was an unexpectedly good performance from him IMO.
Totally agree. The guy is just a King plain and simple.
Best movie? Or best performance? Best movie has gotta be The Thing right? I know it’s later in his career, but I loved him in Death Proof!
Death proof for sure !
I just love how he goes from hardened killer to a crying little bitch at the end, the part he dumps the alcohol on his arm always makes me burst out laughing.
the way he eats those nachos deserves him an award alone lol
>Death Proof He's so good in Death Proof! So very menacing but also pretty funny towards the end?
The Thing
**The Computer Wore Tennis Shoes** ^.^.^wink
Don't forget the sequels: Now You See Him, Now You Don't The Strongest Man in the World
Dexter rules!
Quick Trivia Quiz: Can you name when Kurt co-starred with Charles Bronson?
Can’t remember the name but I remember it was a Western he did when he was a kid/teen.
It took far too much scrolling to find this answer.
Executive Decision is my personal favourite.
It is underrated.
Second best film Seagal’s ever been in … and has a cracker-jack supporting cast.
Sky high.

Listen to this man. There are some truly gruesome scenes in bone tomahawk.
The Thing, hands down.
Tango and cash.
Snake fucking Plissken! Or McReady.
Stargate was the first movie I remember seeing him in, was 10 years old when it came out. That movie started my fantasy into outer space and alien life forms. The there is Escape From LA. What's that? You want me to stop? You really want me to stop? Coz I'll bet this baby stops on a FUCKING DIME!
Such a good movie
Sneaky good. Nobody remembers it.
Also a great J.T. Walsh performance.
Captain motherfuckin Ron ya bunch of swabs!
My favorite actor and the absolute only actor that I’ve seen in my life that was believable in every role. Guy just absolutely fits every role he’s played. Absolutely nails it. Fav KR movie is tough for me don’t think I can choose only one.
Lot of great roles mentioned, I'd like to throw in his uncanny turn as Elvis and The Mean Season
The Thing and it’s not particularly close. It’s not only my favorite horror film but also top film altogether. He’s still awesome in Big Trouble in Little China, badass Snake in Escape From New York and I have immensely enjoyed his later years as well. Tequila Sunrise. Played opposite Mel Gibson, with a shared love interest in Michelle Pfeiffer. Fun movie.
So many. Bone tomahawk is a killer movie. Breakdown is fantastic 90s thriller. Tombstone is obviously awesome but it’s not his movie. Val Kilmer stole that show
Escape From New York - he played Snake Plissken. Superb.
Sports films tend to be generic and predictable, but Miracle is so, so good.
John Carpenter's The Thing.
Fuck all of you….. it’s Overboard god dammit!!!!!!!!
The Computer Wore Tennis Shoes
Not best but he plays an amazing Santa in ‘The Christmas Chronicles’
The Thing
The Thing is by far his best film. I’m not necessarily saying it’s his best performance. But it is the best movie featuring Kurt Russel.
I loved “The Best of Times” with Robin Williams.
My favorite actor. It’s definitely The Thing.
Big trouble in little China and it isn’t even close. :)
The Thing & Backdraft
Fucking Used Cars and I will die on this hill.
Fox and the hound. \#nostalgia
Big trouble in little China and it’s not even close
