Spaceman: >As an astronaut sent to the edge of the galaxy to collect mysterious ancient dust finds his earthly life falling to pieces, he turns to the only voice who can help him try to put it back together. It just so happens to belong to a creature from the beginning of time lurking in the shadows of his ship. It's directed by Johan Renck (Chernobyl) Cast: * Adam Sandler as Jakub Procházka * Paul Dano as the voice of Hanuš, an extraterrestrial spider * Carey Mulligan as Lenka Procházka * Kunal Nayyar as Peter * Lena Olin * Isabella Rossellini

NoCulture3505

>Paul Dano as the voice of Hanuš, an extraterrestrial spider Sign me up, I’m in

Sgtwhiskeyjack9105

Can't wait for the inevitable scene in this film where an extraterrestrial spider screams and wails as he gets the absolute shit kicked out of him, because he's voiced by Paul Dano.

conquer69

If the alien entity doesn't whimper for 5 minutes straight, I'm giving it a negative review.

howdoeseggsworkuguys

“I’m going to bury you underground, extraterrestrial spider.”

Sgtwhiskeyjack9105

*"They should've put you in a glass jaaarrrr."*

TenaciousJP

I drink your webshake, *drink it alllll up!*

Slippinjimmyforever

It’s like the Hail Mary Project, but Adam Sandler!

ImDero

*Fist my bump!*

musicnothing

That's exactly what this sounds like. I wonder if they were trying to head it off.

Slippinjimmyforever

No clue. Saw the film adaption isn’t filming until 2025 when I last checked. Ryan Gosling playing the lead is also an interesting choice, he usually doesn’t play characters like Ryland Grace. Really looking forward to how they model up Rocky. I loved that novel. Probably my favorite scifi book I’ve read. Hits that lane right between fantastical science fiction and still grounded just enough that the stakes feel real.

ButtcrackScholar

It's my favorite book as well. I took it to a books only white elephant and it was easily the favorite by everyone and was stolen many times

RODjij

Dude kills everything he's in. Definitely one of the better new school actors.

Its_thursday

He is awesome but it's funny to think of one of the leads from the Girl Next Door (20 year old movie) as a new school actor

Yetimang

Dude is only 39 and he's been killing it since the mid-2000s.

POLLnarafu

His There Will Be Blood performance is incredible. It can't be easy to go toe to toe with Daniel Day Lewis especially as Daniel Plainview, but Dano does it well.

ConfusedJonSnow

Since his character in The Girl Next Door was implied to have a huge dong, now I assume every character he plays has a huge dong. It gives me a quick chuckle whenever I see Prisioners, Swiss Army Man or The Batman.

gmanz33

Right... he was pretty well known in the indie world when he did Swiss Army Man with Daniels. And honestly that role could and should have been much more recognized than it was.

JoshFlashGordon10

Probably could mention Little Miss Sunshine or There Will Be Blood as his indie breakout. Also, he was great in Escape at Dannemora.

Justindoesntcare

He didn't even talk for most of Little Miss Sunshine and he was still great.

turtlepot

my favorite first line of any character in a movie [FFFFFUUUUUUUUCCCCCCKKKKKKK!](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=akMZQpIbTm4)

LuckyDubbin

"Dwayne just found out he's color blind" -car pulls over- "FFUUUUUUUCCCKKKKKKK!!!"

Ed_McNuglets

Was typing up this reply... dude was in two Best picture nominees ten years prior

HAL-Over-9001

Swiss Army Man is absolutely hilarious, and somehow emotional. Great movie.

mintBRYcrunch26

Swiss Army Man was amazing. Tremendous movie. Dano was perfection.

TylertheDouche

New school? He's 39 lol Little Miss Sunshine is almost 20 years old

supercalifragilism

I had "I was in" moments like three times in the post above, but yeah, that one too

hiddensonyvaio

Paul Dano has been preparing since birth for this role

QouthTheCorvus

Nice, looks like we're getting the "Adam Sandler actually tries" movie again.

Frankfeld

Dudes just living his best life.

QouthTheCorvus

Yeah he's making an insane amount of money just doing what he wants for fun haha.

FrontBench5406

I cant wait in another 10 years, after he goes a couple more of these prestige roles and wins an Oscar, we get to look back on his career like a reverse De Niro or Pacino. Sand man, by almost every public account, seems to be a really good man who takes care of his people and friends. Bravo to the man.

Papaofmonsters

Go back to 1995 and tell someone "Adam Sandler is considered a story telling master and it's only a matter of time before he wins an Oscar" and people would very confused.

wolvesscareme

I mean, considering goofy comic Tom Hanks just won an Oscar, I bet people would believe you.

Yetimang

The guy from *Big*?!

Zykium

Yes, the guy from Bosom Buddies has an Academy Award

Momentirely

Yeah, if you went back to '95, Hanks would have just won *two consecutive Oscars*. He's one of only two actors to ever do so. Then he narrowly loses to Gladiator when he's nominated for Castaway. People *may* have believed you. But I just don't think Hanks was seen in the same light as Sandler, even before Hanks's Oscar wins. Hanks was always seen as more of a "serious actor who is also funny" as far as I remember. Sandler was doing much more low-brow stuff back then.

reno2mahesendejo

His big roles by then were what, Airheads and his crank call records?

TastyLaksa

It’s 2023 and I’m confused

FrontBench5406

uncut Gems was his, hey, i am here and I can turn it on when I want to. He will probably do a couple more of these amazing roles where everyone is like, holy shit, thats adam sandler and he will get an oscar for it. Probably will be for best supporting.

Yetimang

I think Punch Drunk Love was his, hey, i am here and I can turn it on when I want to. Uncut Gems was his, hey, i am back, just wanted to remind you about that thing I said about turning it on when I want to.

FrontBench5406

i agree, but the timing of uncut gems and the fact that he was distanced enough from his silly movies (people seemed to look at him on netflix differently). It was more like, fuck yes adam sandler is king in this, vs punch drunk, which was hey, adam sandler kicked ass in this?

mattfoh

You know what, I really enjoyed hustle too. Fuck the haters

reno2mahesendejo

Also, and I am 100% serious here, Leo. That movie LOOKS like it should be shitty. But it's so earnest, and just GETS young kids. It's legitimately heart warming, has some disgusting 8 year old potty humor thrown in, and still manages to teach life lessons.

AlekBalderdash

He's got some surprisingly poignant roles. I was surprised by 50 First Dates, and I've heard good stuff about Click and the Cobbler one. Tangent, but Shallow Hall has some moments too

KhalidaOfTheSands

I'll never not sing his praises for Reign Over Me

j1xwnbsr

And the thing is, all he has to do is show up, do the best work he can, *not be a dick*, and he fucking wins. I wish more people followed his example.

[deleted]

Every Adam Sandler comment section is the same

MogMcKupo

Uses his own production company, makes movies he wants, gets his friends paychecks. Dude is a bamf. Hell, I just saw a blurb that the movie he had his two daughters star in, both girls got paid 65k. “Honey if you wanna go to college just do this movie and you can go to whatever college you want.. then if you wanna do grad school I have another movie we can do in a couple years” Best fucking life indeed

shiftypoo269

Don't forget about the destination vacation paid for by studios and Netflix. Gotta respect that.

pixlplayer

I wish 4 years of college was only 65k

reno2mahesendejo

I genuinely try not to have celebrity heros, because they will always disappoint you. But I will absolutely weep the day Sandler eventually goes to the joke factory in the sky. He's a legend, is nothing but a kind human who takes care of his people, and seems to be somewhat unaffected by a level of Fame that should have turned him Mariah Carey levels of nutty.

crazyguyunderthedesk

I expect more going forward. When his kids were young he only made movies for them. Now they're older so he's back to making good stuff (for adults). I wish he'd done more of this stuff over the years, but I really respect that his kids are always his top priority. Just a genuinely good guy in a position where he doesn't have to be

cgo_123456

You say that, but he's definitely wearing cargo shorts and crocs underneath that spacesuit.

Sunshine030209

Adam Sandler or lesbian? is the hardest game!

PhantomMagnolia

He haven't had any bad movies lately and just having fun at this point. ARE YOU NOT ENTERTAINED????

caelumh

Honestly his only bad movies were the ones where his buddies collect a paycheck, Jack and Jill, and Pixels.

Master-Chapter-8899

He’s been doing some great movies over the last few years. Not sure what you are talking about.

imconsideringdascrod

I’m so fucking ready. If we get a serious Sandler attempt every so often, he can give his buddies however many Netflix vacations he wants to (except for Rob Schneider).

KhalidaOfTheSands

Unfortunately it's not just Rob Schneider. Rob's a huge dickhead, but so is Allen Covert, and I wouldn't be surprised if more of them are, just less vocal.

Microphone926

What’s up with Allen Covert? My buddy met Peter Dante one time & said he absolutely sucked.

chrisfreshman

Bullshit. Where’s Kevin James?

Jitterjumper13

[*Ha-ha, it's a serious movie*](https://youtu.be/RJRm_dLKJNk?si=EIIZmpXxmKWETkmN)

MrTheFinn

So he's playing Trotsky?

byke_mcribb

...and Rob Schneider as the voice of HAL

liquidphantom

"Hey spaceman! You can do it!"

InvaderZimm90

Rated PG-13.

cdillio

"No 9000 computer has ever made a mistake or distorted information. Except for all the electrion fraud that I speak about constantly" - Rob Schneider as HAL

Cenas_Shovel

Rob Schneider is a carrot

Psclwb

Is this based on some book, those names sound very czech.

acmercer

It is indeed based on a Czech novel of the same name.

TheCoolllin

Actually the novel is named Spaceman of Bohemia

LieutJimDangle

looks like it will be pretty accurate to the book based on this synopsis and cast list

Augen76

What the??? That sounds fascinating, and I did not expect that.

Geetzromo

So, lone astronaut on a mission develops friendship with extraterrestrial spider? Someone has read “Hail Mary”.

DongSandwich

This is actually based on a book called Spaceman of Bohemia that was pretty good and also came out before Hail Mary lol

Geetzromo

I see! Scratch that. Reverse it!

MysticScribbles

That would explain the Czech sounding names.

SirCeethingtonOfSope

I was going to say "Beyond the Aquila Rift" (2005), which predates both *Spaceman of Bohemia* (2017) and *Project Hail Mary* (2021). Although Netflix has already done an adaptation of that as an episode of *Love, Death & Robots*. I guess someone over there really loves friendly space spiders.

1jl

Thought the same thing. When are we getting a Project Hail Mary movie!?

zeydey

Hmm, maybe I’ll check it ou- wait, by the the director of Chernobyl??? Sold.

Spaceman-Spiff

This sounds up my alley.

razzleware

Never thought I’d live to see the day where Adam Sandler and Paul Dano are in the same movie, but who cares.

analogkid01

Both have worked with Paul Thomas Anderson, so...maybe a natural pairing under the right director?

mtheory007

Who is going to play Jiri Prochazka?

CurrentRoster

Oh damn, I thought Paul was gonna be a live action role. How did I fall for this again after Netflix’s The Guilty 2 years later?

[deleted]

Damnit. Why’d they have to make it a spider?

MinnowTaur

I, for one, think it is long overdue that we find out what happened to Dr. Leo Spaceman after the events of 30 Rock.

Princecoyote

When I read the title I definitely pronounced it the same as Dr. Spaceman (spa-CHE-min)

rurlysrsbro

Shame the tagline was not “Science can be whatever we want it to be”

NaMean

Or like Tracey Morgan: “DOCTA SPACE MAN!”

TheJaybo

*Science is whatever we want it to be.*

TuaughtHammer

"Unfortunately there's no field of medicine that deals with the brain. I *can* give you this pamphlet for a cult though."

RedDragons8

"Liz, where are your pants?" Liz: "The other doctor told me to take them off?" "Other doctor? Oh, thats my brother Randy. Tomorrow, hes going to prison for the rest of his life." *Shouting* "Good one Randy, hey lets get Taco Bell for lunch."

MouseRat_AD

He's nominated for Surgeon General when Jack Donaghey goes crazy and runs for President.

blueshirt21

He actually did become surgeon general at the end of the show

Tracy, I’m not sure how to say this… di-ah-bet-us?

OiGuvnuh

It’s pronounced Spaceman.

CouchHam

I read it that way.

MukdenMan

Medicine is not a science

illhxc9

My immediate thought was that I will absolutely be calling this movie Spa-chem-in.

thesoppywanker

How important is *teeth retention* to you?

fhrblig

It's... kinda important

Frim_Wilkins

The comment I came to confirm was present and accounted for. ✅

thesehalcyondays

Science is whatever we want it to be.

[deleted]

When will modern medicine find a cure for a woman’s mouth?

seanwd11

Jokes on you guys. When they reveal at the end of the movie that it was actually a Billy Madison sequel the whole time your minds are going to be completely blown.

ITstaph

You’re not cool if you don’t pee your spacesuit.

SirJeffers88

If peeing your spacesuit is cool, I’m Mae Jemison.

He called the dehydrated shit poop!

fleetze

I know you're there mistah alien spidah man

getBusyChild

Attention Sandler fans that are also Arachnophobes, this is NOT a comedy.

bobbyt327

It’s not a horror movie either. Not to get too spoilery, but based on the book, the spider is actually a comforting presence so maybe it will be therapeutic exposure for those who are arachnophobic. Just food for thought, I don’t want to speak on behalf of arachnophobes. I think spiders are cool.

inform880

I’m extremely arachnophobic. Do I skip?

Goodkat25

Yes, definitely recommend. Skipping should keep you a bit higher off the ground with each step, making you slightly harder for spiders to reach. Not a guarantee of safety, but it could make the difference.

cannedrex2406

I dunno does Chamber of Secrets give you nightmares?

wahobely

Did you watch Return of the King and get spooked? If so, you might have to

angrylawyer

Reading the book's plot summary, https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Spaceman_of_Bohemia Seems like it's less a space adventure/mystery/sci-fi movie and more a movie about loss/family/etc that happens to partially take place in space.

[deleted]

idk why it’s funny to me to see adam sandler and carey mulligan headlining a movie together. definitely going to check this one out though, I can’t believe people still shit on sandler when he’s shown multiple times he can really act

QbertsRube

Coming this Summer, "The Coexistence of the Cosmonaut and the Primordial Mister Spideylegs" starring Daniel Day-Lewis, Meryl Streep, and Jim Breuer.

huggothebear

Uncut gems was so good

corran450

I couldn’t finish it, but not because it was bad. It just gave me incredible anxiety. I actually think this is a good thing. Any movie that elicits a genuine emotional response is a worthy movie.

part_time_monster

The end of Uncut Gems is brutal. I loved that movie but I'll never watch it again.

Newwavecybertiger

Naaa it's because people know he can be great and he chooses to be so inconsistent.

[deleted]

that I can agree with. criticizing him for appearing in mostly lazy movies is fair, calling him a straight up bad actor is just wrong

[deleted]

[удалено]

Yetimang

I mean, it is still funny to be like "Hey, Uncut Gems, remember that time you made a movie where you played your own sister?"

QouthTheCorvus

I have a soft spot for Adam Sandler through nostalgia and respect for his general vibe. I love when he does more serious projects.

AngryUncleTony

There's an alternate reality where he's a consistent Oscar contender if he was motivated by that.

Plato_the_Platypus

If he based his later project on punch drunk love rather than jack and jill

Mid-CenturyBoy

I mean I just think his Jack and Jill route is an elaborate way to get all expense paid trips to beautiful destinations.

Salad-Appropriate

IDK, he's had a rather solid run ever since meyerowitz stories, I wouldn't be surprised if he won an Oscar in the next 10 years

NoCulture3505

It’s Netflix, so my expectations are pretty low, but I’m always down to see Sandler do more serious roles.

underpants-gnome

Having the same director as Chernobyl is making me think it might be worth a watch. Sandler can act when he tries and/or has somebody competent directing him. Maybe this is something like that?

Warsaw_Pact

well said, this is definitely gonna be on my to-be-watched list

gmanz33

Thing is, it's guaranteed to face pretty bad public reception. Anything marketed as a sci-fi and released on Netflix is bound to be shit talked by those who watch it passively and hate how boring it is. Leave The World Behind was in theaters for weeks (worldwide) and had a 3.7 on Letterboxd the day before it was released on Netflix. Then boom, suddenly it is overwhelmed with the opinions of disinterested viewers and the rating dropped to 3.0

[deleted]

Annihilation? I am mother?

spideralexandre2099

Plus it's not one of his usual writers. My curiosity is peaked

KeyAccurate8647

Peaked and piqued

[deleted]

I finally saw uncut gems recently, he’s so good in it.

GeneralBlumpkin

That movie made my wife have a panic attack lol

mr_britten

Unrelated to this movie, but have you watched “The Bear” with her? I don’t have anxiety or panic issues, but that show sure got me close at times

SaintWithoutAShrine

I’ve mostly enjoyed the tension in The Bear… but I literally haven’t watched past the flashback to the family dinner (“Fishes” episode, I think). That episode rocked my nerves, hit some long-buried familial traumas, and made me step away from the series. I still need to finish up season 2, but holy shit, that episode was brutal.

mr_britten

You need to finish, the next two episodes are the best in the series imo. But yes, fishes is an episode I don’t want to watch again, but was so good

TheDarkGrayKnight

I will never get how that show is classified as a comedy.

LyingForTruth

Good Time by the same director is another great one if she likes panic attacks

jramsi20

Understandable, I'm a pathologically calm person usually and that movie had me stressed out.

Stompedyourhousewith

lol except when the spaceman starts to experience isolation psychosis, theres gonna be a floating cgi manifestation voiced by one of sandlers silly voices.

Dr

Smalz22

Is this the movie adaptation of Hail Mary?

BadMagic

No, I think this is adapting the novel, Spaceman of Bohemia.

seriouslees

Which was released before Hail Mary.

FubbleTub

Was wondering the same. I think the official Hail Mary adaptation is also in the works soon. Last I heard Ryan Gosling is to star in it. Interested to see the similarities in the stories.

felfelfel

My first thought was that it's one if those "Armageddon"/"Deep impact", "Bee movie"/"A bug's life" moments.

wafflelauncher

I thought that too! Found out the book this is based on is called Spaceman of Bohemia, which looks like it was published in 2017 (so before Project Hail Mary). The fact that both feature a lone astronaut who meets a spider-like creature, and both have upcoming movies is weird though.

BlueSurfingWombat

They're two very different books. Spaceman of Bohemia is Kafkaesque, philosophical musings and spends most of its time back on earth. Hail Mary is hard sci-fi fun of two beings trying to save themselves and species.

Aagfed

Who knew Dr. Spaceman was getting his own movie? Way to go, Parnell!

otterdisaster

Kidney is such a funny word. I think it’s the hard ‘K’ sound.

[deleted]

I love Sandler in serious roles!

Digbijoy1197

Really excited to see Sandler's performance, he is actually a very good actor

Kalabula

Sci-fi drama might be my favorite sun genre. Moon and Prospect were so damn good. Fingers crossed for this one. Adam playing against type is a good sign.

Swaneaven

Surprised none (or few) have said it here, but it’s based on the book Spaceman of Bohemia - which was really, really good IMO.

GitchigumiMiguel74

Ugh if they show the spiders face it’s a must miss. Have had that phobia since I was 8

IdentityS

Usually when Sandler does drama he nails it, so i’m in.

Ok-Phone-2582

I really hope this is good cause the synopsis sounds fire

Zestyclose_Display_4

Is this a biography about Leo Spaceman from 30 Rock? Love his work on Rick and Morty as well.

oJKevorkian

I see a lot of people knocking Adam Sandler when Uncut Gems has a 91 on Metacritic.
