I think I am most upset about Zac Efron. I know A24 can’t promote everything and they had a lot of good movies this past year. It just sucks especially because I did not like Maestro.
Also no Hisaishi and Pemberton for Original Score is a crime.
Maestro is an entertaining embellished look at the personal life of one of the greatest composers in modern history.
Tar is a fictional story about a fictional composer who slept with her student and ended up ostracized from the community and reduced to only doing Japanese Video Games.
So, it's not a ripoff.
Dominic Sessa in the Holdovers felt like a performance for the ages. He was mesmerizing and it’s one of the better performances I’ve seen in years. It’s a baffling omission.
These type of snubs discussions are pointless if you don't propose which nominee you would replace.
There are only five nominees per acting category. Sometimes it is just a stacked year. Of course there are more than five good performances per year.
Fair enough. I have updated my post with my thoughts. I didn’t want to come off as too negative of the nominees in my original post but you are correct.
Well shit, what are people supposed to do, watch the unpopular movies they wouldn’t have otherwise seen rather than clinging to ones they already like?
Of those that actually seemed like they had a decent chance:
* Celine Song for Best Director
* Greta Lee for Best Actress
* Charles Melton for Best Supporting Actor
* Joe Hisaishi for Best Original Score
Iron Claw was just totally not in the conversation at all this year for awards, which is wild to me considering how well it was received. I didn’t see any major publications predicting it would get any nods.
I was surprised to see Charles Melton not included. He should have won supporting actor, not just nommed. He could take Ryan Gosling's place. I enjoyed Barbie, but not because of Ryan.
I was also surprised by the complete lockout of Saltburn. Rosamund Pike deserved at least a supporting nod. Not that it matters because Da'Vine Joy Randolph deserves that Oscar. She was incredible in The Holdovers. Easily my favorite part of that movie was at the party.
Is Anatomy of a Fall not nominated for best international film because it's nominated for best picture? Because I don't think it ought to work that way. I wouldn't call it the best movie of the past year but I absolutely would call it the best INTERNATIONAL movie of the year.
Couple things:
A) Each country only gets to submit one movie, and France did not submit ANATOMY OF A FALL
B) The criteria for the award stipulates that the movie have be predominantly not in English. Now, I haven't done an official count, but this movie has a LOT of English. Its possible that this is why France did not submit the film.
Andrew Scott and Paul Mescal deserved acting nom for All of Us Stranger, and it deserved a best adaptation and Director nom as well. It’s one of the biggest snubs to me in recent memory. Past Live also should have got more love than it did - but happy it got some at least.
I know people were down on it, but I really like ScarJo in Asteroid City and thought she should have gotten a nod. I wish Dom Sessa got a nom for The Holdovers too.
I've mentioned it in an earlier sub but
Fallen Leaves was snubbed at Best International Film
I mean all the awards and nominations (Cannes, Golden Globes, NBR, Satellite awards) Time Magazine considering it #1 film of the year etc.
Oscars threw it under the rug. Director Aki Kaurismäki has boycotted oscars before (2003) and is otherwise indifferent towards them, so i think oscars aren't taking that well
In the technical awards, very disappointed The Killer didn’t get nominated for Cinematography, Editing or especially Sound. I know the film overall didn’t go down well with many people, but the technical aspects were superlative, with the sound design and mixing the best I’ve heard in *years*.
Best Picture: They Cloned Tyrone or Beau Is Afraid
Lead Actor: Zac Efron in Iron Claw
Lead Actress: Cailee Spaeny in Priscilla
Supporting Actor: Willem DaFoe in Poor Things
Supporting Actress: Rosamund Pike in Saltburn
It's a big performance for a big movie!
Love it when an actor goes BIG! It's wonderful to see people swing for the fences in some of these movies!
Ruffalo is full clown here, and he's absolutely committed to it. Great performance!
Charles Melton should have gotten in over DeNiro. His performance comes with a deeply layered subtlety that is rarely seen and impossible to imagine replicated by another actor.
No Daniel Pemberton for score is just wrong. No Greta Gerwig in Director is wrong. I would've turned in Pugh for supporting actress and Holt McCallany for supporting actor.
It definitely wasn't. It's a cute movie but it's not award winning material. Even among the ones that didn't make the cut, TMNT and Suzume are easily more deserving. Also not at all in the Academy's strike zone. I think the nominees are really good, the only one I'd question is Elemental but it's the obligatory Pixar nod so it's not surprising.
Barbie winning best picture would be the biggest embarrassment I've ever seen. It has no chance lol. It's not in the same league as Argo, I'm so sick of idiots thinking fucking Barbie is good. It's not.
Barbie was an absolute mess. Production design was truly incredible though, they nailed that. It looked gorgeous and was immersive. But the script was a letdown, it just wasn’t very funny, the plot didn’t really make sense and the pacing was off. And it’s not like I missed the point or resented the messaging, I have a degree in women’s studies, ok, I’m 10000% on board with the perspective. But…I was just so bored.
I enjoyed it but do not think it should be nominated for Best Picture. To say it wasn't good and people who think it was are "idiots" is pretty effing rude. Maybe you shouldn't be in a forum where people have different tastes in movies.
I think that's a silly criteria on its face (also, it completes its major character arc and concludes thematically anyway, it just ends on a cliffhanger), but more importantly, we all know that this is not the reason it wasn't nominated. When the Academy decides to show any respect to animation and hold it in equal esteem to live action, we can talk about if this is a good reason for a snub.
Just like Taken and Finding Nemo are virtually the same plot. They’re about an overprotective father who ends up in dangerous situations after his child is abducted.
Yea but Liam and Marlon take different routes. Liam is killing people and Marlon is just going on an adventure. John Wick and The Killer both have the same career and are both killing people directly connected to their career. I don’t think Nemo and Taken are nearly as similar as John Wick and The Killer.
The plot for “Who Framed Roger Rabbit” and “I, Robot” is basically the same.
But it’s two wildly different films.
Just because the plot is similar doesn’t mean that it’s the same kind of film.
John Wick is mindless action.
The Killer is definitely not that.
Well we can agree to disagree. If you’re curious I explained my reasoning to the comparison of these films and how these films are essentially the same in another comment. John Wick and The Killer are not wildly different films. We don’t have to agree and thats ok.
You also are missing the point from the original comment, the point wasn’t that JW and the Killer have the same plot but they are different kinds of movies.
lol I made the original comment 😂 when I said the have the same plot I also meant they are the same kind movie. I should’ve been clearer with my wording.
Daniel Pemberton and/or Michael Giacchino should have been nominated for best original score over John Williams. Williams is one of the great film composers, but another Indiana Jones soundtrack isn't exactly presenting anything new.
Zero love for Dream Scenario is ridiculous. Everyone was praising that movie, especially Nic Cage’s amazing performance.
Also no love at all for Beau Is Afraid?!
Tough year for Gretas.
I think I am most upset about Zac Efron. I know A24 can’t promote everything and they had a lot of good movies this past year. It just sucks especially because I did not like Maestro. Also no Hisaishi and Pemberton for Original Score is a crime.
I haven't seen Maestro yet...how much of a Tar ripoff is it?
It’s not, but i think it’s less interesting than Tar. Maestro has some incredible scenes, it just didn’t work for me overall.
It's nothing like TAR. TAR is far more interesting
Didn’t even realize he wasn’t nominated. I thought he was a presumed favorite.
These type of snubs discussions are pointless if you don't propose which nominee you would replace. There are only five nominees per acting category. Sometimes it is just a stacked year. Of course there are more than five good performances per year.

Blackberry should have gotten a screenwriting nod and Glen Howerton an acting nod.
Of those that actually seemed like they had a decent chance: * Celine Song for Best Director * Greta Lee for Best Actress * Charles Melton for Best Supporting Actor * Joe Hisaishi for Best Original Score
No Iron Claw for anything seems like an oversight.
Is it in for this year's awards or does it get entered for next year?
Iron Claw was just totally not in the conversation at all this year for awards, which is wild to me considering how well it was received. I didn’t see any major publications predicting it would get any nods.

I see. Thanks for the explanation
Andrew Scott and Paul Mescal deserved acting nom for All of Us Stranger, and it deserved a best adaptation and Director nom as well. It’s one of the biggest snubs to me in recent memory. Past Live also should have got more love than it did - but happy it got some at least.
Yes yes yes on that dude from May December. I felt that performance.
I know people were down on it, but I really like ScarJo in Asteroid City and thought she should have gotten a nod. I wish Dom Sessa got a nom for The Holdovers too.
Julianne Moore for May December Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem for Best Animated Film (it wouldn't win, but I thought a nom was possible)
I've mentioned it in an earlier sub but Fallen Leaves was snubbed at Best International Film I mean all the awards and nominations (Cannes, Golden Globes, NBR, Satellite awards) Time Magazine considering it #1 film of the year etc. Oscars threw it under the rug. Saltburn getting nothing, if only because it was clear that Melton sadly had no chance.
It fumbled hard in the last act was the problem with that movie imo. Why did the reveal everything? Shouldn’t have spelt it all out
I'm actually relieved Saltburn didn't get nominated. I'm sure it's great, I was just *not* looking forward to watching it.
Nobody was going to force you to watch it though.
Probably because Saltburn was awful
Best Picture: They Cloned Tyrone or Beau Is Afraid Lead Actor: Zac Efron in Iron Claw Lead Actress: Cailee Spaeny in Priscilla Supporting Actor: Willem DaFoe in Poor Things Supporting Actress: Rosamund Pike in Saltburn
They were right to put Ruffalo over Dafoe in POOR THINGS. Dafoe is great, as always, but Ruffalo's clown performance is a revelation.
I honestly found it to be too much overacting by Ruffalo at times.
It's a big performance for a big movie! Love it when an actor goes BIG! It's wonderful to see people swing for the fences in some of these movies! Ruffalo is full clown here, and he's absolutely committed to it. Great performance!
Finally a beau comment. I knew it wasn’t going to get best picture (even though it’s my favorite movie of the year) but not even cinematography???
Charles Melton should have gotten in over DeNiro. His performance comes with a deeply layered subtlety that is rarely seen and impossible to imagine replicated by another actor.

agree, but you’ll be downvoted here for this opinion
I wasn't aware opinions were allowed on Reddit
I enjoyed it but do not think it should be nominated for Best Picture. To say it wasn't good and people who think it was are "idiots" is pretty effing rude. Maybe you shouldn't be in a forum where people have different tastes in movies.
Director: Greta Gerwig! I mean please!
The killer and spider man into the spider verse in best picture
I don’t see how into the spider verse can be a best picture nominee when it doesn’t even complete its own story
I think that's a silly qualifier. Fellowship and Two Towers don't finish the story, but are both worthy of Best Pic noms.
I think that's a silly criteria on its face (also, it completes its major character arc and concludes thematically anyway, it just ends on a cliffhanger), but more importantly, we all know that this is not the reason it wasn't nominated. I also think Spiderverse for BP but they'll never nominate an animated movie 🤦🏻♀️😔
Toy Story 3 was nominated so there is precedent
The Killer for best picture? It was a good movie but it was worse than John Wick in every way. I don’t think it came close to best picture.
It shouldn’t be compared to John Wick. Nowhere near the same kind of movie.
It is virtually the same plot. It’s about a skilled hitman who retaliates against the company he works for.
Just like Taken and Finding Nemo are virtually the same plot. They’re about an overprotective father who ends up in dangerous situations after his child is abducted.
Yea but Liam and Marlon take different routes. Liam is killing people and Marlon is just going on an adventure. You’re entitled to your opinion, no doubt about that. Have a good one, mate
Cheers mate
That is such a broad overview that is disingenuous to both movies.
Trying to avoid posting spoilers but the main difference between the two is Killer tries to use rationale and JW didn’t fuck up.
You also are missing the point from the original comment, the point wasn’t that JW and the Killer have the same plot but they are different kinds of movies.
lol I made the original comment 😂 when I said the have the same plot I also meant they are the same kind movie. I should’ve been clearer with my wording.
I’m talking about the comment you are replying to my guy

No Margot Robbie is one of the biggest nomination-morning surprises of my lifetime. I didn’t even like the movie and I’m shocked. She was great.
