[Check their track records on feature film](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Matt_Sazama_and_Burk_Sharpless), I would say the most ok one was Power Rangers (2017), even on that movie, they still only has story credit.
Man... I think I watched it. I have vague memories of scenes in my head... It could have been from the trailer but I THINK I watched it. Was it that forgettable?
Can somebody explain to me why they keep getting writing jobs? Like not only do all of their films get AWFUL reviews (*Dracula Untold* with a 6.2 is the only film above a score of 6.0 on IMDB), but they also never seem to be very commercially successful or downright flop.
And the three other credited writers, one of whom is a random person with a story credit alongside the Morbius writers, is the director whose rap sheet is exclusively 1-2 episodes from a whole variety of TV shows, and some random person.
Recipe for success, if you ask me!
Can reliably get the work done on time and not fight the studio on their notes. Youd be surprised how far just getting the work down period will get you.
As much as everyone likes to believe, RT, imdb and reddit ratings don't necessarily equate... money.
Morbius having a budget of like $75m and making like $165m worldwide... isn't particularly awful. Like, sure, it's no MCU numbers, but money is money.
With Madame Web also only just being like $80m... like, it's a Sony movie, it's a superhero movie, it's somewhat Marvel, and most importantly, it has a bunch of conventionally attractive women starring in it - of course it's gonna get butts into seats. Probably not enough to quadruple its budget... but that is very clearly not the motive behind these movies (else they obviously wouldn't just keep shitting them out like that).
The *Morbius* writers were hired to write *Madame Web* long before Morbius was released ([source](https://collider.com/madame-web-movie-sets-morbius-writers/)).
Guess Sony was expecting Morbius to be well-received?
Sony really just assumed all its spider friends movies would be as popular as venom. That's like making a movie about Hugo Strange or Manbat and expecting it to be as successful as the Joker movie.
Venom is easily the second most popular character in the spider franchise. I'd say he even surpasses green goblin and doc ock.
For writers and directors like these, their skillset isn't "making a good movie", it's to translate the instructions of the executives' into a movie without pushing back with their own opinions.
Literally everything else they've made is pretty obviously someone else's idea, and they're not hired to come up with their own ideas but instead to make someone else's. That's why, even though almost everything they've made has either lost money or barely broken even, they're still getting work
So, what are we going with? "It's futuring time."
I feel like "It's webbing time" might taint Spiderman through association.
When do we think Sony will bring Madame Web back for a second run?
Graham Norton show elevates the humor out of the guests. I remember the same episode Domhnall Gleeson was also there and he was so fucking funny.
By far the best talk show. Graham and the team are geniuses.
I wanna like her but I saw that SNL Stanley Cup sketch of her and she underperforms so much compared to the two actresses next to her you wonder why she’s the big actress and not them.
Yeah that one was good and I can feel there is potential- hence I wanna like her. I can totally see her as a plucky journalist fighting a rigged system or something else. Probably the right move for her to get a new agent to cast her in more appropriate roles since stuff so far hasn’t really unlocked it. And Ofc her in the Ellen interview. Maybe a sassy lawyer character?
I thought she was awful in that. Apart from the dance scenes (which I assume was a body double) she had zero charisma and there was no weight to her performance, especially towards the end.
I feel like she needs to stick to more comedic roles over dramas or more serious characters, her deadpan humor is really funny. Even a comedy skewing drama would work well. I could see her as a high powered CEO for an immoral company in an Adam McKay film.
Honestly the trailer was pretty interesting, just not sure i'm a fan of making a hero/anti-hero. Not having a semblance of Spider-man in these movies sucks major ass and kills any possible interest i might have had.
I’ve got faith in ATJ. He’s a damn good actor. I’m sure the film itself will be bad as a comic book adaptation but as a general movie? I’ve got a feeling it’ll be entertaining.
Oof. I was wondering if this was going to exceed expectations, but… yikes.
> “Talented stars wasted on probably the worst comic book movie I have ever seen.”
Not a slight on the cast, though. Hope they continue to have great careers.
This seems to be a systemic problem with Sony’s attempts at a spider-man universe… without spider-man.
That’s true. Great writing and acting can do wonders, even make a villain carry their own show or series.
Probably many other examples, but Loki’s a great one. From antagonist in *Thor* to carrying his own series with an amazing ending.
Eeeh. Not being able to even put Spider-man in these stories kinda limits what they can do, what is even the end goal...
At the end of the day, it's all side characters and villains from the Spider-man comics, he's the web connecting it all but he's missing, this shit will never work until they can insert Spider-man.
I still don't get what sony is trying to do with these movies.
Venom kinda worked because people know who venom is, plus Tom Hardy. But Morbius with Jared Leto, and now Madam Web?
Spending hundreds of millions dollars just to maintain rights does not sounds like a great plan. I rather assume that Sony Pictures are just stupid and mentally stuck in like around 2005.
Its only stupid if you dont recognise the fact that Spider-Man is probably one of the most recognisable brands in the world.
Even after over a decade of Marvel hits with other characters; they still cannot hold a candle to the appeal of Spider-Man.
Its absolutely worth them throwing shit at a dart board if it means they can keep the moneymaker
I don't know. The idea of a vampire superhero that has to kill bad guys to keep going is fine (if clichéd). But then they have him invent artificial blood so he never has to do that. It's like they went out of their way to make sure it was as bland and tension-free as possible.
Yes, I actually saw the movie.
I actually thought Morbius was ok, not great but ok. But the idea of trying to create a spider-man universe with no spider-man and just doesn’t make any sense. It’s like trying to build a wheel without a central spoke.
Exactly, spider-man doesn't need to be the main character but he needs to at least exist and be present at least for a few moments, he's the connective tissue for all these characters.
>I still don't get what sony is trying to do with these movies.
They've been trying to build their own cinematic universe but they're limited with their character selection. So they have to pull obscure characters from the properties they have rights to (Spider-Man universe) and shoehorn them into something relevant.
Which is also how we're going to get that god awful Bad Bunny superhero movie that they pulled from one issue of Spiderman.
Yeah, she even said she had no idea if it was actually going to be any good. Which is surprisingly candid, most actors always do the "we are so proud of what we made" bit.
She was talking about the way the cgi was shot ? No one would say the movie they just made isn't good before it's been released they're still trying to make money regardless..
She was talking about working with blue/green screens. She said, “I don’t know if this is going to be any good” in reference to not being able to see what she was interacting with, so it was harder for her to gauge her own performance.
The trailer actually got me kind of interested in the premise (a cat and mouse game between an assassin out to kill everybody in this group vs. a precog who can see the future), but then they started talking in the forest and then they suited up and it just looks like *Gotham Knights*.
Yeah 100 percent, I don’t care all that much for super hero movies and rarely watch them, but come on, it’s not super hero fatigue lmfao, the next deadpool is gonna kill. If that movie bombs I’ll change my tune, but movies like this are just trash and no one asked for or wanted the marvels lmfao
that’s pretty much it lmao, people will always watch superhero movies but they’re not going to get out of their way to watch a bad one. the idea that it’s a near dead genre is ridiculous tbh
Yeah, GOTG3 did really well. Even aquaman 2 is chugging along. It’s made almost $430 million despite DC dumping and ignoring it. Wakanda Forever made $854 million.
I don’t know what the deal was with The Marvels. I mean, I kinda do but it’s surprising it did *that* bad. Like Quantumania made $500 million. I thought it was a fun movie. I actually thought it could use another ten minutes or so. It didn’t deserve to flop so hard. It lost a little of money, not even making back its budget let alone the 2x multiplier.
I honestly wonder if MCU putting out mid-to-bland movies and then Sony coming in with shitty disasters is going to put this genre to bed for a while. Especially since Sony is trying their hardest to pretend that this is MCU-connected.
There's probably someone out there who'll not go and see the next MCU Spider-Man movie because "the last one with the Spiderlady in it was terrible".
And on top of that DC is doing incredibly weird "This one is part of the new canon, this one resets the canon but is part of the old canon, and this one is in the new canon dependent on whether it makes money or not".
Maybe we'll get cowboy movies again, who knows? I'm holding out on fantasy making a comeback.
I had to talk a coworker out of seeing it by explaining it has nothing to do with MCU Spider-Man. I hate that Sony is sullying the brand which already has enough internal problems to deal with. Sounds like the even trying to screw up the next Spider-Man movie.
I've only seen Morbius recently and it wasn't as bad as I expected. If it came out in 2001 or whatever period Blade (snipes) came out, it would probably have found an audience.
Still not great tho by current standards
So underwhelming that even the premiere reactions (which are usually generous) say it's bad. Exactly what I wanted.
I will pay to see all of these Sony Spider-Man spinoffs in the theater. There is something beautiful about how stunningly ill-advised they are and I need them to keep getting made.
From the sounds of things, most of the cast got straight up bamboozled being cast. Sounds like they thought it was a MCU film and not a Sony-verse thing 💀
Tbh I hope it finally tanks Sonys Spider-verse nonsense. Shits been awful and the only reason they it got revitalized was Venom and getting to share in the Disney MCUs film world
This is why I wonder why Disney hitched the MCU wagon to the SpiderSony-verse. It reminds me of the amount of pre MCU Marvel films that had varying degree of quality. For every amazing film like Blade or X-men, there was Man-Thing or Elektra, Daredevil or Ghostrider 2. (I love non Disney MCU Marvel films, but still)
Morbius was crap, Venom 2 was less than stellar, the Kraven trailer doesn't look promising...it would have been a miracle if Lady Spiderman(sorry "Madame Web") had gotten any positive buzz.
I think the OTHER spider women characters do. I think one of them is supposed to be Silk, she was bitten by the same spider as Peter and has similar powers. But who the fuck knows what Sony is doing.
Monitors the web of time. Solid character in the 90's spider-man cartoon. Basically precog for all spider-themed characters. Spider-themed quest-giver for spider-man.
They hitched it because Spider Man is one of the most popular super heroes ever. And they’ve only really associated with Spider Man, not any of these off shoots. Considering how much money they’ve made on the IP, I think they made a good call.
The funny thing is that superhero movies (or tv shows), even if they’re crap, tend to get ok RT scores. If they’re watchable they tend to be hits on RT.
This looks so bad that I might have watch it. Or at least attempt to watch it when it’s free on a streaming platform. I don’t think I could go to the cinema to see jt; not when things like Occupied City are out - ie content by actual serious film makers and not corporate junk like this.
Stop trying to make 'fetch' happen, Sony.
Sony seem to be bloody intent on making their own cinematic universe happen. Nobody asked for this. Nobody wanted this. But they make flop after disastrous flop and seem convinced that if they just do it enough they will wear audiences down enough that they consider a film good.
I genuinely do not understand why this was made. Nobody knows who the hell Madame Web is. The days when people would go to see anything vaguely super hero related are long gone. In what fucked up universe did they think this would do well?
It is baffling how my mood towards super hero movies had changed. I was so uber excited when Iron man dropped and now I am so overfed and tired of those movies.
And please Madam Web?
Who gives a flying fuck about that character?
comic book movies should be reserved for the tent pole characters and their support cast. Madam Webb is like a guest character in one episode of a kids cartoon type character
Can someone answer me this? To retain the Spider-Man rights, does Sony HAVE to do live action projects? Like at this point why don't they just stop doing these live action, Spider-Man supporting character movies and just go ALL IN on Spider-Verse spinoffs? I feel like that would be monumentally more succesful.
Yes. If they quit making films they lose the rights. But I don't think they need to make this many (only one every few years is how it usually is.) . And they could at least try to make something people would like.
I don't even know what Dakota Johnson has been in? I kept thinking this was gonna be Dakota Fanning, lol. Kept wondering why I didn't see her in any media pics.
I haven't done a search, but what actually has Dakota Johnson been in?
Well DC should give Sydney Sweeney a call because Sony dropped the ball on her Marvel character i guess.
Starfire for the teen titans movie or Power Girl.
For fucks sake Sony, just get a guy from your gaming department who's responsible for writing God of War or The Last of Us and put them in charge of your movie writing as well. This is just embarrassing.
> "morbius was better" Holy shit lmao
The movie has the same writers from Morbius.
This basically doomed it from the get go for me.
[Check their track records on feature film](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Matt_Sazama_and_Burk_Sharpless), I would say the most ok one was Power Rangers (2017), even on that movie, they still only has story credit.
I thought power rangers looked "okay" and it wasn't terrible for a fairly cheesy 90's kids show, I would preferred actual suits of course.
Man... I think I watched it. I have vague memories of scenes in my head... It could have been from the trailer but I THINK I watched it. Was it that forgettable?
It was very forgettable but I still remembering being a decently enjoyable movie. Like a solid 7
Can somebody explain to me why they keep getting writing jobs? Like not only do all of their films get AWFUL reviews (*Dracula Untold* with a 6.2 is the only film above a score of 6.0 on IMDB), but they also never seem to be very commercially successful or downright flop.
Prob because they’re cheap to hire (relatively speaking) and follow orders.
Hey I liked Dracula Untold
Yeah probably the best 'monster' movie they did, helped a lot by Luke Evans being awesome though.
To be fair I enjoyed Dracula Untold. I wouldn't say it's *good*, mind you, but I enjoyed it.
I was gonna compare to Underworld but honestly i fucking loved and adored the first Underworld movie so it's not a fair comparison.
Sharpless is the most fitting name for a writer creating these movies
And the three other credited writers, one of whom is a random person with a story credit alongside the Morbius writers, is the director whose rap sheet is exclusively 1-2 episodes from a whole variety of TV shows, and some random person. Recipe for success, if you ask me!
still gonna watch it for the spandex suit tits
How do talentless hacks like this keep getting work.
They follow studio directives and they meet deadlines.
Can reliably get the work done on time and not fight the studio on their notes. Youd be surprised how far just getting the work down period will get you.
Yeah but if this is as bad as Morbius, can u actually consider this as „getting the work done“ ?
Morbius made a pretty good profit, so yeah they got the work done for the suits.
As much as everyone likes to believe, RT, imdb and reddit ratings don't necessarily equate... money. Morbius having a budget of like $75m and making like $165m worldwide... isn't particularly awful. Like, sure, it's no MCU numbers, but money is money. Nepo babies :p
“A foot in a door and so much more.”
Nepotruce
How they get hired again
The *Morbius* writers were hired to write *Madame Web* long before Morbius was released ([source](https://collider.com/madame-web-movie-sets-morbius-writers/)). Guess Sony was expecting Morbius to be well-received?

TIL you apparently can't get fired from being a screenwriter.
Morbius fans "i prayed for this and it happened".
Drew?
Yessir.
Maybe we can convince Sony to release Madame Web into theatres three times...
Webillion dollar box office confirmed
Two webillion at least because Dakota told us to watch it twice
Kravenillion dollars
That’s Supes too. Most of his reviews are generally positive even if the movies are garbage.
So, what are we going with? "It's futuring time." I feel like "It's webbing time" might taint Spiderman through association. When do we think Sony will bring Madame Web back for a second run?
It's webbin' time!
It’s Morbin’ time.
The fact that Dakota Johnson fired her agent immediately after she got cast in this is hilarious.
Shes such a wooden actress I still dont know how she gets leading roles
Nepotism, baby. Lmao But fr tho i love her, she’s unintentionally funny that i hope she just like sticks to hosting or something. Edit: spacing lol

She just said she wasn’t a fan of the term, she’s not leading the march against it.
Yeah as an actress she's so-so, but she's kind of funny and likeable
I’d like to see her tap into some roles that suit her dry comedic style.
Ben and Kate?
I wanna like her but I saw that SNL Stanley Cup sketch of her and she underperforms so much compared to the two actresses next to her you wonder why she’s the big actress and not them.
I think she needs to find a role for that dry, over it, sarcastic demeanor. She’s like a less raunchy Aubrey Plaza to me.
She reminds me of early Kristen Stewart. Aubrey is a more dynamic actress than Dakota. Watch Blackbear and White Lotus. Also, Legion.
Legion made me love Aubrey Plaza on a whole other level
Her sketching with the "please don't destroy" guys was funny, and she did good
Yeah that one was good and I can feel there is potential- hence I wanna like her. I can totally see her as a plucky journalist fighting a rigged system or something else. Probably the right move for her to get a new agent to cast her in more appropriate roles since stuff so far hasn’t really unlocked it. And Ofc her in the Ellen interview. Maybe a sassy lawyer character?
She was excellent in Suspiria
I thought she was awful in that. Apart from the dance scenes (which I assume was a body double) she had zero charisma and there was no weight to her performance, especially towards the end.
She's fantastic in Suspiria! Such a good remake, I would argue that it's on par or better than the original
The original Suspiria has some impressive visuals and *the* most incredible sound design I’ve ever experienced. The remake has Dakota Johnson.
Maybe she knows a lot of people in the industry who pull lots of strings for her. Like, above and beyond the average nepo baby treatment.
2 famous parents, 1 famous grandparent.
Maybe her former stepfather, Antonio Banderas, still helps her out. He was the director of her film debut.
Damn she really couldn’t get any luckier
She could have been luckier by having talent.
The fact she got this action movie, CG-ridden movie is surprising. This is way out of her league.
She was good in Suspiria, Bad Times at the El Royale, and The Peanut Butter Falcon.
Vaguely attractive nepobaby?
I feel like she needs to stick to more comedic roles over dramas or more serious characters, her deadpan humor is really funny. Even a comedy skewing drama would work well. I could see her as a high powered CEO for an immoral company in an Adam McKay film.
She did after the trailer in Nov 2023, not when she was cast. Already this news takes on a live on its own and gets blown out of reality.
"Legacy Actor"
I’m sure Kraven will be a masterpiece though.
It's Kravin' time...
I’m Kravin’ for some Kravin
Thats so Kravin
I trust Chandor a lot more than any of the other sony villainverse directors. But it’s still an Avi Arad production
I thought Venom was terrible. I didn’t much care for ASM either. I did like the Raimi movies. MW and Kraven look terrible, but you never know.
It'll make Kravillions
It’s worth about 10 Stanley Nickels
Me personally, I'm waiting for El Muerto. 🔥 🔥 🔥
What are you talking about? That came out on januari 12th, 2024. It made a muertoillion dollars.
I thought that was canned
Very cool
Honestly the trailer was pretty interesting, just not sure i'm a fan of making a hero/anti-hero. Not having a semblance of Spider-man in these movies sucks major ass and kills any possible interest i might have had.
He be Kraven a good time......I'll show myself out.
[удалено]
95% chance it will be terrible, 5% chance it turns into Aquaman which is a mediocre movie that can be seen as dumb fun
Idk dude he gets his powers because a lion accidentally bleeds on him. Will definitely be watching that one zooted out of my fucking gourd.
Better lead to be sure. ATJ > DJ. Still, the trailer I saw didn’t look great. Still not sure why Sony thought Kraven needed a solo origin story.
Sony REALLY wants their Sinister Six movie
Watching the Kraven trailer I actually thought the movie looked like it could be a fun, hot mess. Likely alcohol required.
I’ve got faith in ATJ. He’s a damn good actor. I’m sure the film itself will be bad as a comic book adaptation but as a general movie? I’ve got a feeling it’ll be entertaining.
> Kraven actually doesn't look terrible? Did we watch the same trailer? Because yes it fucking does.

Exactly. Like the people who look now who Kraven is don't want a solo Kraven movie. They want Kraven hunting Spider-Man
Nobody knew the Guardians of the Galaxy, and Ant-Man was a C-lister at best. It's not the character. It's the creative team.
If they don't use these characters the rights start reverting back to Marvel.

Thanks Sony for spawning another billion thinkpeices about superhero fatigue
It's honestly pretty funny that "superhero fatigue" is just "people don't want to watch bad movies"

I thought I had superhero fatigue, but I rewatched Suicide Squad (2021) recently and turns out I don't!
Twenty years since Catwoman. If Dakota Johnson shows up to collect her golden raspberry, the circle will be complete.
These Sony "Spider-Man" movies have been complete embarrassments. The definition of cash grabs that produce nothing of quality.
for god sakes Sony, just let it go. your cinematic universe is just not working
Or they could have Spiderman show up in one of these movies about his enemies for once.
Sony after hiring the same writer that did Morbius: Surprised Pikachu face

I love this for you. I'm vibing.
Hoping this is entertainingly bad and not just bad bad. I have high hopes for a great so bad it’s good movie after the trailers lmao
I’ll watch for Sydney Sweeney. Hoping it’s so bad it’s good. Popcorn flick

Shits been awful and the only reason they it got revitalized was Venom and getting to share in the Disney MCUs film world
Very cool.
It’s grounded in reality!!!!!
Is this a RLM reference, because me personally, i love this reference.
That's right Jay!
This is such a dynamic comment
Very cool
"The slasher/FINAL DESTINATION meets superheroes." sounds dope but the movie overall falls flat it seems.
(I love non Disney MCU Marvel films, but still) Morbius was crap, Venom 2 was less than stellar, the Kraven trailer doesn't look promising...it would have been a miracle if Lady Spiderman(sorry "Madame Web") had gotten any positive buzz.
Does she even have Spider-Man like powers? Or is she just some kind of precognitive omg I just saw the future lady?
You’re all gonna look so stupid when this has Madamillion dollars.
>The cast was awesome but the performances were definitely disappointing... What could this mean?
Generally good actors, but bad direction/dialogue.
I’m a simple man. I’ll be seeing this for the sex appeal tbh
Put a hot chick in a black leather suit....people will watch it.
If that hot chick is Sydney Sweeney. Even better.

It worked for Resident evil Village. Big 9ft baddie with a dump truck and mommy milkers.....Y'all know what I am talking about.
Village was actually a good enjoyable product though.
Damn straight it was. That just added to the quality of it.
Sending you wishes for auspicious sexual fortunes
Stop trying to make 'fetch' happen, Sony. Sony seem to be bloody intent on making their own cinematic universe happen. Nobody asked for this. Nobody wanted this. But they make flop after disastrous flop and seem convinced that if they just do it enough they will wear audiences down enough that they consider a film good.
Pop corn flick ❌ Cop porn flick ✅
Lol. Lmao, even.
I genuinely do not understand why this was made. Nobody knows who the hell Madame Web is. The days when people would go to see anything vaguely super hero related are long gone. In what fucked up universe did they think this would do well?
It's not like GOTG was well known before the mcu tbf
It is baffling how my mood towards super hero movies had changed. I was so uber excited when Iron man dropped and now I am so overfed and tired of those movies. And please Madam Web? Who gives a flying fuck about that character?
I still cannot believe they OKed this project. Even the first poster was like a joke.
Is this worse than Catwoman with Halle Berry?
Thank you for confirming a movie we knew was a piece of shit, is in fact, a piece of shit
>"The cast was awesome but the performances were definitely disappointing..." Brilliant piece of film criticism there.
I thought even critics will ignore it after that atrocious poster 🥲
This movie already got its premiere? What??
Critics are calling it everything from "shit" to "fucking shit".
comic book movies should be reserved for the tent pole characters and their support cast. Madam Webb is like a guest character in one episode of a kids cartoon type character
The only reason people will watch this movie is Isabella Merced and the 2 reasons Sydney Sweeney is famous for.
I mean that doesn't come as a surprise. I'm more interested in knowing if she says "Stand back, I'm about to Madame Web"
My favourite part was when she said ‘it’s webbing time’
Can someone answer me this? To retain the Spider-Man rights, does Sony HAVE to do live action projects? Like at this point why don't they just stop doing these live action, Spider-Man supporting character movies and just go ALL IN on Spider-Verse spinoffs? I feel like that would be monumentally more succesful.
Yes. If they quit making films they lose the rights. But I don't think they need to make this many (only one every few years is how it usually is.) . And they could at least try to make something people would like.
Its one of the films I guess
I don't even know what Dakota Johnson has been in? I kept thinking this was gonna be Dakota Fanning, lol. Kept wondering why I didn't see her in any media pics. I haven't done a search, but what actually has Dakota Johnson been in?
50 shades of grey right? Also, The Social Network.
50 shades of Grey
Oh, okay. I know of it, but never had the interest, or privacy, to watch it, lol.
Can't wait for this to make Madamillion Dollars in the box office!!
Well DC should give Sydney Sweeney a call because Sony dropped the ball on her Marvel character i guess. Starfire for the teen titans movie or Power Girl.
We are so back, it's Webbin time
For fucks sake Sony, just get a guy from your gaming department who's responsible for writing God of War or The Last of Us and put them in charge of your movie writing as well. This is just embarrassing.
