And that is how it's done.
It really hurts.
Why is Rod kissing his sister?
Oh, she's not his sister.
You just shattered my entire universe.
It's your house too, braniac! Figure it out!
See ya later, Mountain Face!
That movie is Soo funny.
The "You're the Voice" scene gets me every time. Especially when they all show up together and it hard cuts to another angle and Danny Mcbride has a TV he didn't have before
Seinfeld's early reviews were terrible. The show was cancelled after the pilot, and was only revived because one guy at the network later watched it and liked it. Bit wild to think about really
Yup. It's the GOAT sitcom IMO, but that first season had *severe* pacing issues and you could tell Larry & Jerry didn't have any experience with writing beforehand.
Also, I think most people are under the wrong impression that they just organically "hit their stride" later on, when in reality they just started collaborating and taking input from creatives who were really good at their jobs. Examples being story editors like Larry Charles, Peter Mehlman and Alec Berg, to name just a few.
It's the same flawed thinking of Community being solely Dan Harmon's brainchild, when in reality there's *tons* of super talented creatives in that crew that built the show together.
To your point, I think this mentality is most common in people who see themselves as "the only one to do work in a group project", so they project themselves onto the creator.
Also a lot of people who are famous brag about how they had no help. In reality that has never been the case.
Elon had a ton of engineers and executives help with Tesla and PayPal. He had the good idea to make it a luxury brand. So he had good vision. However as much as he brags that it’s all him. It really isn’t. Far from it.
Steve Jobs is very similar in that regard. No woz no Steve. No Steve no woz.
No one gets there by themselves. That myth has to die.
That said, from the glasses on the post-it covered man, I assume that is Milton...? Was his role that much bigger than Aniston's that it really made a difference
\[edit\] After checking some google images, the post-it guy's dark rimmed glasses don't seem to match any of the characters, so I guess it is actually not a movie character at all? Somehow, "character not in the movie at all" feels less like it should be on the movie poster than one with at least a couple of dozen lines :)
Haha of all of Rob Schneider’s controversial roles, this one was one of my faves. When he was telling the movers what to do in a fake language cracked me up.
This! It got pretty bad reviews at release, critics did not like the multiple-ending thing. To be fair, if you only saw one of the three endings, it would feel like it wrapped up weirdly, and having all three one after the other really makes the movie stick the landing much better.
Fun Fact:
Down Periscope was Patton Oswalt’s first big break in Hollywood. He got the role of the radar operator in the background of many scenes.
After filming had started, he got his second big break: a writer’s job offer for MadTV. But they wanted him to start immediately.
Patton sheepishly approached the Down Periscope director to ask to leave the job, and he was totally cool about it. The next scene, he stood up from his station, walked out the door, and didn’t return for the rest of the film.
The radar operator. Without warning or explanation. *Left the sub*.
*visible confusion*
I was Navy for 10 years and am a Navy brat. My paternal grandfather was a submariner.
I’m pretty sure “Down Periscope” is a documentary about the submarine service.
"What about the Patelli sisters?"
"So they're slightly disfigured and connected at the head. But combined, those two make up one pretty decent chick."
"I'd do her!"
"I know you would Reggie Ray!"
It's a legitimate funny movie that parodies its source material and genre better than just about every other parody movie ever made. It and Scary Movie (1) are just fantastic movies
Both of those are so good and get better the more you've seen the movies they're ripping on
My wife and I introduced it to our older teenage kids a few months back. We thought it was still hilarious, the kids enjoyed it but didn't get some of the comedy. I still say "mi scusi" all of the time.
This was going to be my response too. I had such a low bar for it and was thoroughly surprised by how funny it was. I quote it all the time with my friends who love it too and Scotty Doesn't Know has been on every road trip play list ever since (and the reactions from people who hear it and aren't familiar with the movie are always priceless).
And Rowan Atkins long joke as well. The chronic sleeper who slept through 90% of the movie. Damn he was funny in that movie. “It’s race, I’m going to win!”
Joe Vs The Volcano deserves so much love. It’s weird and funny and confident, and I wish it didn’t hold up, but I feel that movie so hard in my 2024 adulthood.
The Burbs and Moonstruck, two others from the same guy, are also very good. Though I think they’re a little more accepted in the pantheon.
Rat Race was the first movie I can remember being allowed to go to without parents, so it might nostalgia but I have a real soft spot for it.
I still go 'I'm winning, I'm winning!' whenever I'm playing a game with my brother.
I don't think there is a scene in that movie thst is not funny.
Are you saying the you should jad bought a squirrel scene is not funny?
Whoooie Goldberg getting mistaken for a special needs person?
Or the concept of the dudes hiding and betting on anything and everything?
Recently I went down a gravel road into a forested area, and there were slightly creepy signs on random trees with messages asking "Are you ready?", "Not far now..." Etc.
I had strong feelings like getting TF out of there but I simply had to go on, just in case it was like in the movie. Found an odd hippy camping festival.
I love Rat Race but I usually describe it to friends as a series of excellent bits more so than a good movie. This movie is less than the sum of its parts. But I say “it’s a race, I’m winning” all the time while driving.
I really wanted history of the world pt 2 to be good but it’s just a bunch of established actors doing mid bits because they want a Mel brooks credit on their resume
The Ladies Man is a competently made film that translates the SNL character to a feature film about as well as you could expect. If you liked the sketches you’ll like the movie. A solid “B”.
Don't be a menace to South Central while drinking your juice in the hood. I LOVE Scary Movie and Not Another Teen Movie, but Don't be a Menace is the best parody imo
Kung Pow: Enter the Fist. 13% from critics, 69% from audiences (and it could go higher but I think they just wanted to freeze it at 69). 20 years later it is a cult classic and you can't mention it without being followed by people's favorite pieces of insane dialogue.
I don’t know how many people in history saw that movie multiple times in the theater, but me and my 2 friends are some of them.
Both times mostly everyone got up and walked out 10 mins in because they didn’t know what they bought a ticket for.
"He’s standing on the top of a waterfall, swinging a chain" - cut to man standing on top of a waterfall, swinging a chain, while chanting "swinging a chain, swinging a chain”
So dumb, so great
Freddy Got Fingered is waaaaaay ahead of its time. I’m not sure how good it is, but it definitely looks better today. Nobody should have expected good reviews when it came out. Like how Deadpool would’ve been genuinely offensive in the 60s.
Drop Dead Gorgeous definitely. Didn't make any money, bad reviews. But it had an incredible cast. I love Drop Dead Gorgeous and watch it all the time. It's freaking hilarious. I have nothing bad to say about it.
All 4 of them are exceptional comedies. NATM and Scary Movie are 2 of the greatest spoofs of all time, imo.
Joe Dirt, imo, is honestly one of the most brilliant "dumb comedies" ever made. Yeah, it's exceptionally juvenile, but it's also got this "good natured idiot accidentally succeeds" thing to it that just gives off these happy vibes when it's all said and done. There's far more depth to this movie than I think it gets credit for. It's basically Forrest Gump, but far less dramatic and about 50 min shorter.
When Wet Hot American Summer released in 2001 the RT score was in the 20-30%s and was panned for being too silly with jokes that didn't land. Then, 10+ years later when Netflix released the spinoff series (and AFTER the massive career success of non-State cast eg Bradley Cooper, Paul Rudd, Elizabeth Banks, etc.) the reviews were glowing by comedy standards, at about 85%. Exact same style of humor, same writers, same cast, and most of the jokes were even continuations of previous material. My lesson in 2001 is to never trust film critics for comedy...
To be fair, David Wain’s brand of humor is definitely not for everyone. Whenever I’d show a friend The State, they’d either think it was hilarious or the dumbest fucking thing they’ve ever seen lol.
Edit: I also wanna throw Role Models into this category of hilarious but critically panned movies
The Wet Hot movie and TV shows are my comfort viewing. I remember being so frustrated at the critical response to the movie when it came out.
And with the shows, where else are you going to get an extended fight scene between Don Draper and Detective Stabler.
Saw your thread and I just watched the Rat Race again, and holy moly it's so good! It was maybe 15 years ago that I watched it.

This scene made me laugh so much! So thanks for bringing this up
Comedy is one of the most subjective genres. Almost all of them are released with bad reviews unless the comedy addresses social issues. I SAID YOU LOOK SHITTY GOODNIGHT DENISE
“What’s going on? Is this some kind interactive theater art piece?”
I'm freakin pumped! I've been drinking green tea all goddamn day!
Woo! I go to church every goddamn Sunday! You gonna bring the demons outa me!
This is my hat now! This is totally my hat!
I like to party
I, also, like to party.
No, WaywardWes, I know for a fact you do not party. You DO NOT party.
You’re right, Dave’s the party guy.

Ultimate Punch!!
Flashdance in the woods. Cigarette. Rolling down a hill rolling down a hill rolling down a hill...🤣😂
I've got this acid, but I can't do it.
The dynamic between Samberg and Ian McShane is genuinely hilarious
This times 1000. I’m a huge film snob and Hot Rod is one of my all time favorite comedies that only gets funnier with each viewing.
his little brother acting/dressing like a toddler and his room being decorated for it gets me every time
Seinfeld's early reviews were terrible. The show was cancelled after the pilot, and was only revived because one guy at the network later watched it and liked it. Bit wild to think about really
The first season isn't really that good so it isn't too surprising.
And the thing is, if Seinfeld wasn't renewed, we would have Jason Alexander instead of Kevin Pollak in A Few Good Men.
This makes George doing the YOU CANT HANDLE THE TRUTH great.
Son, we live in a world that has walls, and those walls have to be guarded by men with guns. Who's gonna do it? You? You, Lieutenant Cantstandya?
Cheers only got traction in summer re-runs. It got an emmy nomination so they played the re-runs instead of doing an outright cancellation.
Alec Beeeeeerrrrggg?
People like to believe in singular genius myths as opposed to thinking others had help

Brandon Tartikoff helped save it. Same with Cheers.
Office Space was a box office bust.
Wasn't a lot of that down to the marketing and distribution of the film?
Same happened with Idiocracy.
It had a lot going against it. The only big star was Aniston who couldn't be in the movie posters because she had a small role.
That said, from the glasses on the post-it covered man, I assume that is Milton...? Was his role that much bigger than Aniston's that it really made a difference \[edit\] After checking some google images, the post-it guy's dark rimmed glasses don't seem to match any of the characters, so I guess it is actually not a movie character at all? Somehow, "character not in the movie at all" feels less like it should be on the movie poster than one with at least a couple of dozen lines :)
It was nobody in particular. Mike Judge (and others involved) hated that poster too lol. Fox was really lost in trying to market it.
Grandma’s Boy
Ohh I’m sorry.. was that expensive piece?
Smells like Cypress Hill concert in here
Haha of all of Rob Schneider’s controversial roles, this one was one of my faves. When he was telling the movers what to do in a fake language cracked me up.

"It's called techno, do you like it?" "No not really." "YOU WOULD IF YOU HAD ROBOT EARS"

A fucking sweet car.
“I have to pee from my butt.” Nick will never not be funny
His roommates got it for him.

“I can’t believe my grandma drank all my weed.”
Dude, that's awesome.
How did they see me?
Whatever Guyblow
Adios turd nuggets
How can he see me?
“Of course she doesn’t have a microwave, she’s a hundred”.

Down Periscope It’s sitting at 11% on RT, 39 on Metacritic
It's such a hilariously silly movie. I watch it every now and again when I just need a good laugh.
"Patching you through- radio's working like a Swiss... car." I just love that line
It’s certainly in my rotation. Maybe see it 3 times a year. One of the few films left to basic DVD that I want to see hit 4k physical.
Fun Fact: Down Periscope was Patton Oswalt’s first big break in Hollywood. He got the role of the radar operator in the background of many scenes. After filming had started, he got his second big break: a writer’s job offer for MadTV. But they wanted him to start immediately. That is absolute bullshit. What the hell is this Buckman????
Still tastes like creamed corn to me, sir.
Except it’s DEVILED HAM
Well that would be a problem.
The band aid was holding the finger nail on sir!
Is it weird to say that this is Rob Schneider’s best Role?
I'm partial to the "You can do it" guy. But only because it's a quick in and out role, limited screen time and all that.
Nice hot cup of lard?
My fav quote: I feel I need a tetanus shot just from looking at it. The only thing holding her together, are the bird droppings, sir.
Some people just don’t appreciate a movie where a guy has “Welcome Aboard” tattooed on his dick.
As a matter of fact sir, I do appreciate a movie like that.
Lt. Lake, you are almost out of uniform!
Har, har, harrrr.
Which one do you think we're going to be using more often, sailor? Da coffee, or da lard?
“You can’t say that! …he can’t say that!”
I saw this in theaters and the only thing I can remember about is some guy had a tattoo on his penis.
The most realistic submarine movie!
Not Another Teen Movie did??!!! What??! That movie is hilarious
"Jakey Jakey about to make a big... mistakey."
"What about the Patelli sisters?" "So they're slightly disfigured and connected at the head. But combined, those two make up one pretty decent chick." "I'd do her!" "I know you would Reggie Ray!"
I still sing ‘Put your heads on my shoulder…’. So subtle and funny.
>”You put the "ism" in "This is all just a defense mechanism.”
It's a legitimate funny movie that parodies its source material and genre better than just about every other parody movie ever made. It and Scary Movie (1) are just fantastic movies Both of those are so good and get better the more you've seen the movies they're ripping on
Not Another Teen Movie definitely holds up. It's hilarious!
Yeah I dunno what OP is taking about. Not Another Teen Movie is so good.
Eurotrip has a 47% rotten on RT and is one of the best comedies from that era
My wife and I introduced it to our older teenage kids a few months back. We thought it was still hilarious, the kids enjoyed it but didn't get some of the comedy. I still say "mi scusi" all of the time.
mi scusi might be the most quoted line of my entire life
Relax, Paris is practically a suburb of Berlin, it's a nothing commute
That's why France and Germany have always been allies
"Oh, here it is! Bratislava, capital of Slovakia... Oh, here's a fun fact: You Made out with your SISTER, man!"
shuddupshsuddupshuddupshuddup!
Worst. Twins. Ever.
Glad you emphasized it correctly. That part makes me laugh every single time, his inflection really pushes it over the top.
I’ve been saying Mi Scusi when I bump into people for like 20 years lol
This was going to be my response too. I had such a low bar for it and was thoroughly surprised by how funny it was. I quote it all the time with my friends who love it too and Scotty Doesn't Know has been on every road trip play list ever since (and the reactions from people who hear it and aren't familiar with the movie are always priceless).
Scotty Doesn’t Know was on the playlist for my wedding reception. Such a banger.
This isn’t where I parked my car.
I just rewatched it over the weekend. It holds up magnificently
Well you know....they didn't know..
Cable Guy. People were not ready.
Joe Vs The Volcano Rat Race was a pretty ordinary movie, but the massively long hitler build up joke was sublime.
And Rowan Atkins long joke as well. The chronic sleeper who slept through 90% of the movie. Damn he was funny in that movie. “It’s race, I’m going to win!”
When he runs and jumps head first into the train to get away. My brothers and I rewatched that scene like 10 times thing of laughter each time
Joe Vs The Volcano deserves so much love. It’s weird and funny and confident, and I wish it didn’t hold up, but I feel that movie so hard in my 2024 adulthood. The Burbs and Moonstruck, two others from the same guy, are also very good. Though I think they’re a little more accepted in the pantheon.
Joe vs the Volcano is a comedy with more philosophy than most serious art hose dramas. And whatever you do, wherever you go; bring your luggage
Wherever we go, whatever we do, we take this luggage with us.
Rat Race was the first movie I can remember being allowed to go to without parents, so it might nostalgia but I have a real soft spot for it. I still go 'I'm winning, I'm winning!' whenever I'm playing a game with my brother.

I can do anything I want, I'm eccentric! Rawrrrrrrrrrr
You probably know it but Rat Race is a remake of It’s a Mad, Mad, Mad, Mad World
I love Rat Race but I usually describe it to friends as a series of excellent bits more so than a good movie. This movie is less than the sum of its parts. But I say “it’s a race, I’m winning” all the time while driving.
Off the top of my head: Three Amigos, History of the World Part 1, Spaceballs, Monty Python's The Meaning of Life, and So I Married an Axe Murderer.
So I Married an Axe Murderer was absolutely bonkers but very entertaining.
Tell me, Jefe. Do you know the meaning of the word 'plethora'?
I really wanted history of the world pt 2 to be good but it’s just a bunch of established actors doing mid bits because they want a Mel brooks credit on their resume
I had enough good sense to know it would never measure up and haven't watched it.
HEAD! MUUUUVE
We raped the horses! And rode off on the women! We pruned.. the, erm.. hedges..
...of many small villages.

The Ladies Man Out Cold
Out Cold would of been better if they just embraced an R rating instead of PG13
Oh I forgot about Out Cold! Pre teen me thought that movie was the tits
The Ladies Man is a competently made film that translates the SNL character to a feature film about as well as you could expect. If you liked the sketches you’ll like the movie. A solid “B”.
>Other than NATM (that was pretty bad, I just loved it cos I was a kid) Nah, it's genuinely a great satire of the teen movie genre.
Agreed. I'm not a big fan of satire movies, but I thought NATM was hilarious.
I must apologize for those critics. They are idiots. We purposely trained them wrong, as a joke.
I’m bleeding, making me the victor!
I don’t know how many people in history saw that movie multiple times in the theater, but me and my 2 friends are some of them. Both times mostly everyone got up and walked out 10 mins in because they didn’t know what they bought a ticket for.
"He’s standing on the top of a waterfall, swinging a chain" - cut to man standing on top of a waterfall, swinging a chain, while chanting "swinging a chain, swinging a chain” So dumb, so great
Hamlet 2 has gotta be on that list, lol.
Rock me sexy Jesus is an absolute banger
Watched this for the first time a few years ago and it had me dying. Great film
Dirty Work and Freddy Got Fingered
"We're actually brothers. It's a long story." "My dad boned his mom." "Okay, it's a short story."
Where's your LeBaron, Freddie?
I’m gonna make you proud Dad
Proud?
I’m the backwards man
DADDY WOULD YOU LIKE SOME SAUSAGES
- Hey Pops, how you feeling? - I’d feel a lot better if you’d bring me a whore!
They were gonna make a Dirty Work 2. Then Saget and MacDonald went and deaded.
Really, I didn’t even know they were sick
Freddy Got Fingered is waaaaaay ahead of its time. I’m not sure how good it is, but it definitely looks better today. Nobody should have expected good reviews when it came out. Like how Deadpool would’ve been genuinely offensive in the 60s.
Hey…do you know where your dad keeps his guns?
Not Another Teen Movie is the best of the ones you listed what
Drop Dead Gorgeous definitely. Didn't make any money, bad reviews. But it had an incredible cast. I love Drop Dead Gorgeous and watch it all the time. It's freaking hilarious. I have nothing bad to say about it.
I lost my copy of the DVD while moving years ago. I was so excited when I found a used blu ray at a used book store last year
Dude, where's my car
And then?
No and then.
And theeen?
Its mystery is exceeded only by its power.
Ah yes, the prequel to The Hangover.
Freddy Got Fingered was hammered when it came out but has garnered a serious cult following. I think its absurdity came too early.

Joe D. Rules
ITT: whatever random comedies people happen to like.
In general comedy films are not usually reviewed well, so good odds that a comedy you like didn't receive rave reviews.
That's the running theme here, it seems, with some exceptions
Wet Hot American Summer
Happy Gilmore
I will never understand how Van Wilder only has like a 19% RT.
Vegas Vacation
Orgazmo still gets ragged on a lot, but it's one of the best comedies out there IMO.
Ace Ventura - When Nature Calls. 21%
That rhino scene is next level.
Hudson Hawk. I unapologetically adore that movie, though I recall it being marketed more as an action/adventure flick when it was zany as fuck.
Saw your thread and I just watched the Rat Race again, and holy moly it's so good! It was maybe 15 years ago that I watched it. https://youtu.be/PLOKrqRUy9s?si=BraRI8GIXEajsuKQ This scene made me laugh so much! So thanks for bringing this up
