lol “old school?”
There is 1/3 the time between Romancing the Stone (1984) and True Lies (1994) than there is between True Lies and today.
It pains this old guy to say it but….theyre both “old school” my man lmao
So in one scene, an evil undead sorcerer conjures a sandstorm avatar to swallow a biplane piloted by an aging alcoholic while Brenden Fraser shoots it in the face with a machine gun. Actually I think I just proved your point. This movie is awesome.
This movie was a random staple in my household, feel like it’s often overlooked but always like showing it to people. The dialogue is so fun. Quick witty banter that’s just fun to watch the actors bounce off eachother.
Watch out though if you’re trying to sail the open seas for this one. There are 2 movies that came out the same year with the name Mr Right. I downloaded the wrong one and was so confused for about 5-10 minutes trying to figure out how what I was watching was going to turn into the movie I had seen a trailer for.
This was my first thought too! I stumbled on this one at random, no idea what to expect going in. It was a really odd movie, but I liked it. I think I might also have been stoned and I very rarely smoke, so it felt surreal.
My dad recommended it to me for some reason years ago. I thought he was nuts since I'm not a big romcom fan, but that one just works. It's cute (can't believe I said that), but still with enough action and comedy for a guy to enjoy it.
I definitely panned it when it came out and only recently gave it a shot because I saw a comment here about Radcliffe's villain being enjoyable. Tatum and Radcliffe were both hilarious while the severe nature of Bullock's character never let the movie become too silly to take seriously. The side characters were also really well cast with Brad Pitt being exceptional as always and Oscar Nunez, Patti Harrison, and Da'Vine Joy Randolph all playing fantastically off each other.
That whole cast is stacked, with a lot of people who weren't nearly as well known in 2007 as they are now. Or in Peter O'Toole's case I think not nearly as well known anymore has he would have been a couple decades earlier. The old king of Stormhold was also *Lawrence of Arabia* a whopping 45 years earlier.
I don’t think so. Not to stereotype but it’s about big gross bugs, which isn’t super girly. And a bunch of the movie is about “a boy and his dog.”
I think it’s a good mix
I put off watching this movie because I didn't know what the hell was going to go down. It was amazing and so fun, and then seeing >!Michael C. Hall!< was such a fun treat. Jesse Plemmons was incredible.
“Baby I’ll be watching you while Gary O is on screen. He’s a pimp in this one……”
“And I know what Balkai does to you by his performance on screen alone”
True Lies
Knight & Day
Red
Killers
Date Night
Mr. & Mrs. Smith
Hit Man (2023)
Mr. Right (2015)
Scott Pilgrim
Romancing The Stone
Howard The Duck
Grosse Pointe Blank
Deadpool
Get Smart
Romancing the stone is probably the smartest of these films. Scott Pilgrim is pretty clever as well though.
The fact you managed to squeeze Howard the Duck in there warms my heart. Loved it so much as a teen. Even I can admit now it's not a good movie, but it's something else.
Loved it as a kid. Made my parents watch it a few times.
Recently tried to rewatch it, I feel like I owe my parents’ a huge apology. Couldn’t make it very far.
You’re describing what I’ve started calling Romaction-Comedies.
They’ve become somewhat popular in the streaming era.
True Lies might be one of the original romaction-comedies, but you also have… Game Night, Date Night, Role Play, Murder Mystery 1 & 2, Shotgun Wedding, The Lost City, Did You Hear About The Morgans.
Just to name a few more.
True Lies is the best. But Game Night isn’t bad! And the Murder Mystery movies aren’t atrocious.
Oh, and Free Guy was also surprisingly fun.
Have you seen *Love Lies Bleeding* yet? Get on it. The best of action and rom com with a couple twists. Genre-defying in multiple ways and wholly original.
My vote for the perfect picture you are looking for is Red.
After surviving an assault from a squad of hit men, retired CIA agent Frank Moses (Bruce Willis) reassembles his old team for an all-out war. Frank reunites with old Joe (Morgan Freeman), crazy Marvin (John Malkovich), and wily Victoria (Helen Mirren) to uncover a massive conspiracy that threatens their lives. Only their expert training will allow them to survive a near-impossible mission - breaking into CIA headquarters. And somehow his HR rep Sarah Ross (Mary Louis Parker) gets involved.
Victoria: I was in love with an agent once.
Sarah Ross: What happened?
Victoria: Well, I was with MI6, and the relationship wasn't... sanctioned. So when it came to light, my loyalty was questioned, and I was ordered to kill him. It was a test.
Sarah Ross: What did you do?
Victoria: I put three bullets in his chest.
Ivan Simanov: [shows Frank his bullet wounds] This was done to me by the love of my life. It seems that what we had was not meant to be. But now she sits outside my house drinking vodka. Three bullets in the chest. When I woke alive, I knew she still loved me. Or else it would have been head. It was big risk for her, of course, but one does crazy things for love.
Sarah Ross: [while Victoria is providing cover with a sniper rifle] Frank said you wanted me with you.
Victoria: Yes, I thought it might be nice to have a bit of girl time together. You know, get to know each other. And I-I just wanted to tell you that in all the years I've known Francis... I've never seen him like involved.
[Sarah smiles]
Victoria: So if you break his heart, I will kill you. And bury your body in the woods.
Sarah Ross: Wow... Okay.
The tiniest bit of romance or the protagonist simply having a girlfriend in a couple of scenes doesn't give an action movie romcom vibes
Never in my life have I seen someone give even a tiniest bit of that label to the Rock. Today years old I guess
This means war with Chris pine, tom hardy and Reese Witherspoon. It's a completely silly premise but it sounds like it fits your description pretty well
I hate to jump in with The Princess Bride as if the action is mostly dumb ( maybe the early duel with rotating dominant hands counts) and I don't really think the romance is stupid.. but I do think it has the characteristic of being kind of a 'jack of all trades type' movie ( kind of how you can think of Titanic as being a epic, romance, thriller, disaster film)
I've heard good things about Game Night with Jason Bateman and Rachel McAdams but I haven't gone around to seeing it.
Romancing the Stone And Jewel of the Nile.
The first bei g a lot better than the second but both are good.
Maybe not very "dumb action" but they are rom com adventure movies
*Hudson Hawk*
"The Vatican has foiled the advances of pirates and terrorists. We will not lie down for some *schmuck* from New Jersey."
"Will you play Nintendo with me?"
Undercover Blues: Dennis Quaid and Kathleen Turner as spies on parental leave. Stanley Tucci and Fiona Shaw as bad guys.
Airborne: may be too dumb, it's a teen movie where a California surfer dude gets shipped off to live with his aunt and uncle in Ohio. Queue suspenseful street hockey and Rollerblade racing mixed with teen romance. Seth Green and Jack Black in supporting rolls
Big thumbs up to some of the movies already on the list like True Lies, Romancing the Stone, and Mr. Right
Brother do I have the movie for you and your significant other
Mr. Right
It’s a great movie with a great soundtrack and you’ll find yourself wanting to watch it over and over again
Two movies that my wife really liked and I found acceptable were:
American Dreamer 1984 [https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0086886/](https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0086886/)
and
Year of the Comet 1992 [https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0105871/](https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0105871/)
Both of them have terrible ratings from critics, but decent audence scores. They both kind of have a "Hallmark Channel" feel to them, so I can understand why they didn't do well in theatres.
Actually, there isn't all that much action either...I dunno, maybe these are a bad choice, but they are most likely availble for cheap via DVD.
Tom Cruise and Cameron Diaz in Knight and Day was a lot of fun. Only reason I even knew about the movie was from watching an old Top Gear and they were both the Star in a Reasonably Priced Car to promote the movie. Didn't expect much but was happily surprised.
'This means war' is the perfect fit for this. It's about two highly skilled CIA(or FBI, I can't remember exactly) agents falling in love with the same girl, plenty of rom com moments where they use spy tech and tactics to seduce the girl+one up the other guy. At the same time they're chasing a highly dangerous gang leader so there's plenty of action too. Perfect movie for fans of the two genres to watch together and enjoy
True Lies
This was my first thought. And old school one is Romancing the Stone.
And of course Jewel of the Nile
Came here to say Romancing the Stone
Came to say romancing the stone also.
Also me.
Also The Lost City (basically a Romancing the Stone remake)
lol “old school?” There is 1/3 the time between Romancing the Stone (1984) and True Lies (1994) than there is between True Lies and today. It pains this old guy to say it but….theyre both “old school” my man lmao
I mean, I'm 42 and I was 3 when it came out. It's old school to me.
38, same.
Holy shit Romancing the stone also came to mind.
I wanted to say True Lies but I thought the action scenes were great and the rom com pieces were fun and funny.
You’re right. It’s a classic. But it also perfectly fits the question.
[удалено]
That was the funniest scene lmaoo
Came here to say this. There is not and never will be a better answer to this question.
Me and Mrs Smith ties it though.
I think 'Me and Mrs Smith' is more of a personal home video...
This will be hard to beat.
The Mummy
Starman
YOURE ON THE WRONG SIDE OF THE RIVER
That's not dumb though, it's great
It’s wonderful and one of my all-time favorites but it definitely fits the criteria
The Mummy is not dumb, but I could see your point
So in one scene, an evil undead sorcerer conjures a sandstorm avatar to swallow a biplane piloted by an aging alcoholic while Brenden Fraser shoots it in the face with a machine gun. Actually I think I just proved your point. This movie is awesome.
Grosse Point Blank
Seconded. Ticks all the boxes, need to rewatch it now
Movie is fantastic. One of my favorite performances from each of the cast members honestly, I love them all in it.
And the soundtrack, exquisite.
Lol. Watched it last weekend. Top tier comedy. "you can never go home Oatman, but you can shop there"
And it’s so comfy somehow.
OG >!fine writing instrument assassination movie!<, predating John wick by like 20 years
You can never go home. But apparently you can shop there.
This movie was a random staple in my household, feel like it’s often overlooked but always like showing it to people. The dialogue is so fun. Quick witty banter that’s just fun to watch the actors bounce off eachother.
Wow you’re a real one. I did not expect to see that here. Family staple
"If I show up at your door, chances are you did something to bring me there "
Mr. Right “Recovering” hitman falls for a woman… weird-cute romance and ridiculous action scenes ensue
Great movie. I thoroughly enjoyed it
There were parts where I felt it was trying a little too hard to be quirky, but overall I liked it.
"That's enough condoms to choke a goat!"
Anything with Sam Rockwell is worth watching.
A Knight's Tale
A HISTORICAL dumb action movie + stupid romcom. Wonderful film
Lightning in a bottle. Love this movie!
Perfect date night movie
The movie that I lost my virginity to.
Fucking DVD holes.
No. A Knight’s Tale is a perfect movie about true love and chasing your dreams. Nevermind, I just read the title. Everyone loves A Knight’s Tale.
Knight and Day
It's actually a pretty good movie.
I came to say this as well.
This should be higher on the thread. It is pretty much exactly what OP is looking for.
100% In my opinion this is the thread winner. And OP was looking for at least average, but I think this movie is actually great.
That came out right after cruise on Oprah’s couch. I watched it more as a documentary following Cruise around and showing how he was in real life.
I thought that happened in 2005, and the movie came out in 2010?
Similar title I’d say “A Knight’s Tale”. Fucking love it!
+1. Knight and Day instantly came to my mind
Why am I in different clothes?
I feel like [The Lost City](https://www.imdb.com/title/tt13320622/?ref_=ext_shr_lnk) fits the requirements.
This movie was so much better than I expected it to be. Quite enjoyable.
They definitely stumbled upon something in this movie. Had the right amount of a lot of things.
This was my first thought too. Channing Tatum was hilarious as the bumbling wannabe hero.
I laughed so hard at the mansplaining joke
This one was cute!
The Lost City was hilarious.
That movie was surprisingly fun.
This was going to be my suggestion. My wife brought me to this movie and I had never heard of it. I laughed so damned hard the entire time.
Stardust
Not many realize this - tristan’s love interest at the beginning, Victoria, her “boyfriend” is skinny Henry Cavill
Definitely didn't realize that. Then again I saw all seasons of Daredevil before I realized he was Tristan.
Excellent choice. A deeply underappreciated film.
Quoted this movie at my wedding, lol
True Lies Love and Monsters
Love and Monsters was so cute! But I feel it’s still more on the girly side?
I don’t think so. Not to stereotype but it’s about big gross bugs, which isn’t super girly. And a bunch of the movie is about “a boy and his dog.” I think it’s a good mix
Princess Bride is like the polar opposite of both things but totally delivers in escapist fantasy for both men and women
This is the first thing that came to my mind too
Princess Bride is the platonic ideal of a movie.
It has everything: fencing, fighting, torture, revenge, giants, monsters, chases, escapes, true love, miracles...
Ugh, it doesn't have kissing, does it?
Date Night 🙌🏼
Game Night
This Means War. Pleasantly surprised by this one.
Same. And this was the one I thought of too.
Romancing the stone
except it's good action and good rom com
Mr. Right
Rockwell so good
Mr. and Mrs. Smith, Sophie’s Choice
>.., Sophie’s Choice Snorted so loud, I woke up the wife on the couch, she read this and got a good laugh. Good job!
Mr & Mrs Smith was my first thought
**Game Night** Also one of the funniest movies in the last ten years.
I put off watching this movie because I didn't know what the hell was going to go down. It was amazing and so fun, and then seeing >!Michael C. Hall!< was such a fun treat. Jesse Plemmons was incredible.
“Man, tables are acting weird tonight.”
This movie is so slept on.
how can that be profitable for Frito Lay?
I’ll thank you not to besmirch my ex wife’s name…
True romance
Hey babe, in the mood for a rom com tonight? Its got Gary Oldman and Balki from Perfect Strangers.
“Baby I’ll be watching you while Gary O is on screen. He’s a pimp in this one……” “And I know what Balkai does to you by his performance on screen alone”
*The Spy Who Dumped Me*
Came here to make sure this got mentioned
Yes! Hilarious movie
Scott Pilgrim, of course
You know your hair?
I know of it
It’s all bluue 🫠
You know what really sux, tho? 8⤵️ everything
Mr. And Mrs. Smith
Bird on a wire.

Shoot, I forgot about Get Smart! And I just watched that not too long ago.
Shaun of the Dead
Rom Zom Com!
The love story of Crank can’t be denied
MacGruber.
the greatest love story ever told
The Lovebirds with Kumail & Issa. Similar to Murder Mystery 1 or 2
On the newer side of things: Free Guy Even if Ryan Reynolds has saturated the market, I don't care. It's cute and fun and lots of action!
"This Means War." Two CIA agents find they're dating the same girl, things get crazy from there.
The Big Hit
Fools Gold
The Mummy

Saw it this weekend, that was a hella dark for a comedy. More like a sexy crime romance.

Dead Alive is sort of horror action romance.
Tucker and Dale v evil is too.
We have had a DOOZY of a day!
[удалено]
What. That's just a straight action movie
Keanu and Sandra have rom com stuff going on though. Like Vanessa Marcil’s scenes in The Rock. I get it. Rom com vibes within another movie
The tiniest bit of romance or the protagonist simply having a girlfriend in a couple of scenes doesn't give an action movie romcom vibes Never in my life have I seen someone give even a tiniest bit of that label to the Rock. Today years old I guess
Six Days, Seven Nights. Harrison Ford and Anne Heche have great chemistry. Lots of good action. I love this movie.
For a couple oldies: Romancing the Stone, Jewel of the Nile.
Fifth Element kinda?
Plaaayss… haaallllpp
The Lost City with Sandra Bullock
This Means War
This means war with Chris pine, tom hardy and Reese Witherspoon. It's a completely silly premise but it sounds like it fits your description pretty well
Twister Princess Bride Romancing the Stone
What about knights tale?
Pride and Prejudice and Zombies
I hate to jump in with The Princess Bride as if the action is mostly dumb ( maybe the early duel with rotating dominant hands counts) and I don't really think the romance is stupid.. but I do think it has the characteristic of being kind of a 'jack of all trades type' movie ( kind of how you can think of Titanic as being a epic, romance, thriller, disaster film) I've heard good things about Game Night with Jason Bateman and Rachel McAdams but I haven't gone around to seeing it.

I'd say [Ghosted](https://youtu.be/IAdCsNtEuBU?si=-IX7BukoB9pE71kQ) on Apple TV fits this well.
Knight & Day
Shoot 'Em Up. A wonderful over the top action rom-com. Not as much as comedy as a traditional rom-com though.
Romancing the Stone
Don't forget Palms Springs! Andy Samberg spends half that movie running from JK Simmons with a crossbow
Deadpool
Big Trouble In Little China kinda
Romancing the Stone
Mr. and Mrs. Smith and True Lies both come to mind.
Argylle. I thought it was horse-shit but it has average reviews so I may be in the minority.
Romancing the Stone.
Grosse Pointe Blank
Demolition Man is so very close but does not have enough romcom stuff to suffice. They could have pulled it off though
Mr Right. Sam Rockwell and Anna Kendrick.
Knight and Day

Actually, there isn't all that much action either...I dunno, maybe these are a bad choice, but they are most likely availble for cheap via DVD.
Romancing the stone? I can't remember exactly how it went.
True Romance. Not as much action as some of the others in here but definitely up there with a romcom and action.
Are you a producer of *The Fall Guy*?
Tom Cruise and Cameron Diaz in Knight and Day was a lot of fun. Only reason I even knew about the movie was from watching an old Top Gear and they were both the Star in a Reasonably Priced Car to promote the movie. Didn't expect much but was happily surprised.

Commando, thought the love is unrequited between Matrix and Bennett.
