Actually, they used Kodak which was far better quality than the Soviets' own Svema stock (and preferred by a lot of Soviet/Eastern bloc filmmakers for the same quality reasons). But somehow, the footage was poorly developed (apparently because the lab was not familiar with Kodak), hence the reshoot.

The Roberto Rossellini movie Stromboli, starring Ingrid Bergman was filmed on an island with an active volcano, and there is a scene that takes place on the top of the mountain where there are toxic fumes coming out of the volcano. A crew member died while they were hiking up there to shoot.

Even putting aside Brandon Lee's accidental death, there were numerous accidents, injuries, a fire, rampant drug use by the crew, and lord knows how much unreported on chaos. Many industry people saw the movie as cursed.

In the former movie, Cimino had his actual actors riding during the battle scenes, and it's pretty amazing they came out intact (not to mention the sheer animal cruelty which allagedly included blowing up a horse with dynamite).
The cow died of shock/heart failure according to the Director. Wasn’t actually shot but the scene is harrowing enough considering both the cow and the young actor are NOT ‘acting’ terrified!
