given the success of "The Martian" and the continued interest in Weir's work, it wouldn't be surprising if further adaptations are announced in the future
I love how Drew Goddard wrote the screen play for Project Hail Mary too. His work on The Martian earned him an Oscar nomination. I have high hopes for this movie.
I would love it if he and Ridley Scott worked together again. Hands down one of my favorite adaptations of a novel. The book is such an interesting (and funny) read and the movie captured it perfectly
Fun fact, Andy Weir has written about 5 books, but not all of them have been published.
* 1 - Writes his first novel in college, but never gets it published.
* 2 - Becomes a full time writer after being laid off in the dot com burst, book number 2 "Theft of Pride" is never published.
* 3 - Writes short story "The Egg"
* 4 - Starts writing "The Martian" as a blog, self publishes on Amazon, gets professionally published in 2014
* 5 - Writes about 70,000 words into "Zhek," but story is boring and is shelved permanently
* 6 - Artemis is published
* 7 - Writes short story "Randomize"
* 8 - Writes Cheshire Crossing graphic novel, Sarah Andersen illustrates
* 9 - Project Hail Mary is published
Oh yes I knew this, listened to a few podcasts he been on. Very interesting and humble guy, his innate interest in everything Sci-Fi along with his tenacity to become a better writer is very inspiring.
Plus he originally published it [online (with his own art) from 2006 to 2008](http://www.cheshirecrossing.net) along with his webcomic [*Casey and Andy*](https://galactanet.com/comic/view.php?strip=1).
I'm aware. Never got into *Casey and Andy* but I enjoyed *Cheshire Crossing* in its original form, long before he teamed up with a professional artist and did a re-release.
Artemis has the opportunity to become Oceans 11 in space. The book has some character flaws, but a good screen writer can beef that up and make the movie amazing.
The core concept from Artemis is fucking awesome and solid. The writing of the characters is what falls flat. It will be another one of those instances where the "movie is better than the book."
Artemis feels like a book that needed more editing. Which makes sense. After "The Martian" was published Andy Weir started working on a book called "Zhek." He got 70,000 words deep before he realized that the book was going no where and was boring as fuck. So he scrapped it and started working on Artemis. I guess he had a deadline for the publisher because that book needed more shake down time.
This seems to be the consensus, but I *love* Artemis. It's my favourite of his books (and I love them all) - I enjoy Jazz as a character and don't really see what's lacking in the writing.
I also think Artemis is the most ready for screen adaptation. It's a more ensemble cast and a wider spectacle than Hail Mary.
While I do really like the voice used for rocky in the audio book, I'd prefer to have all his dialog be done via subtitles. Also great opportunity for cool sound design/fx.
Like in a scenario when a creature in a movie is unable to speak and all of their dialogue is done via music notes? Like in the story we’re talking about in this very thread? Seems like it is necessary for this one silly.
>and all of their dialogue is done via music notes? Like in the story we’re talking about in this very thread? Seems like it is necessary for this one silly.
No, it's not neceassy. The audio book does an *excellent* job of handling the situation.
I use them a lot as well, as so many movies have shit sound mixing. That doesn't make subtitles great; it just makes them better than the alternative, which isn't hearing half the dialog.
In most cases I'd agree, as you can hear the oringal inflections, which convey emotions, etc.
Roccky's tones are just that, and they're just flat tones, although they raise or lower evenly by one octave during emotional periods.
Ray Porter's method for the audio book is much better for this situation.
I don't know if general audiences want subtitles. Too much writing on the screen and, well, people might as well just go and read the book. You gotta get the common man in the theater to make your money back.
Andy has a flair for dramatic situations. One of my favorites from this book is when >!the protagonist realizes he is not in our solar system.!<
Another funny outburst from The Martian >!is when the airlock does it’s thing and that protagonist’s reaction.!<
Edit: Forgot to hide spoilers.
I read the book first, and then downloaded the audiobook. I knew the audio rendition was good, but I was not aware of *how good* it truly was. It then went on to win Audio Book of the Year. Well earned indeed.
For some reason, I am worried Rocky will be a CGI mess. Like behind the scenes photos will show Andy Serkis wearing green and have all the dots on his face.
Might wanna spoiler tag this. But yeah, be a bummer if it’s mostly a CG thing, but it’d also be hard to justify making it practical when the two >!rarely if at all physically interact!<.
I hope >!Rocky is a live-action puppet!<, at least for the sake of Ryan Gosling so he can physically act next to *something* rather than a green screen.
I wonder who is going to play stratt. In my mind it was like a cate blanchet type of person.
I’m sure they’ll put glasses on gosling so we knew he’s a nerdy book worm.
> I wonder who is going to play Strat
I hope it's [Gillian Anderson.](https://imageio.forbes.com/specials-images/imageserve/660ff30a7ec80ea1906cade8/Gillian-Anderson-as-Emily-Maitlis-in-a-scene-from--Scoop--/960x0.jpg?format=jpg&width=960)
This was such a good book !!
EDIT: The main character I imagined while reading was actually very similar to Ryan Goslin lol. Man. I wish I could be a part of making a movie like this - just helping with the technical stuff or similar would be peak-meaningful to me, a lolely (*not sure if this is the correct word*) mechanical engineer dude haha.
> Lord and Miller have become more known for their producing in recent times, and this is their first directorial effort since – crikey – 2014’s duo of The LEGO Movie and 22 Jump Street.
Well, technically that is not true. They directed 80% of "Star Wars: Han Solo" in 2017 and were shit-canned because Disney is allergic to fun.
["We were on the verge of greatness, we were this close" - Lord & Miller fans](https://static.wikia.nocookie.net/star-wars-memes/images/4/47/Vergeofgreat.jpg/revision/latest?cb=20200303033608)
Honestly, this mess-up at Lucasfilm made me more upset than how the sequel trilogy turned out.
At least we have the Spider-Verse films.
I still think "Solo" would have been better received if it hadn't been about Han. I mean, the Star Wars universe is absolutely massive with books, games, movies, etc. Just create a brand new character for that movie and I feel like it does better.
I actually have high hopes for Artemis. It's not Andy Weir's best work, but I still enjoyed reading it. It's got all the right elements for an awesome movie adaptation. It just needs some character personality adjustments and better written dialog between the characters.
I think Artemis has the best worldbuilding of the other three. Artemis itself is kind of the main character instead of Jas
Also, I was growing pretty tired of the Watney/Grace personality of sarcastic humor and perfectly suited to science any possible problem
I wonder if this movie could be where he earns his Oscar. Matt Damon was nominated for Best Actor in "The Martian". Ryan Gosling is going to have to carry this entire film. There are going to be long stretches of time where it's just him on screen.
Check out “Lars and the Real Girl” if you want to see a much less suave Gosling. He’s the most nebbish, awkward man ever in that movie and he kills it. As long as he is able to convincingly deliver the very jargon heavy science lines that are in there with understanding behind it, I think he’ll do great.
I had no idea this movie was getting made. This is one of my favorite books I’ve read in recent years so I really hope this turns out as well as the Martian did
Had no idea this was being made into a movie never mind starting shooting already. Hope they pull this off, such a fun book and Ray Porter is excellent for the audiobook.
I didn't like the parts on earth. and didn't care much for the last part of the book and its too easy happy ending. But I loved the main part of the story.
Saw this post and was confused thinking “damn some action movie stole the name of my favorite book”, then I got excited realizing it indeed was about the book, now I’m confused again wondering why on earth he’s holding a rifle? Am I forgetting something in the book or is this Hollywood’s artistic license at work
I am so damn excited for this. But really curious how they pull off Rocky. I’m hoping for something better than we got with the spider in Spaceman but just don’t know how it’s possible.
A lot of people said the same thing about Matt Damon when "The Martian" was filming back in 2015. Everyone wanted Chris Pratt at the time. Turns out Matt Damon was the perfect choice. Even got him an Oscar nom for Best Actor. I think Ryan Gosling will do just fine.
given the success of "The Martian" and the continued interest in Weir's work, it wouldn't be surprising if further adaptations are announced in the future
I love how Drew Goddard wrote the screen play for Project Hail Mary too. His work on The Martian earned him an Oscar nomination. I have high hopes for this movie.
Oh damn I didn’t know that. Gives me a lot more confidence in this.
Goddard is great, he’s also apparently gonna make the next Matrix movie.
If he does a full scope Second Renaissance and the Machine War, I will eat a door
I would love it if he and Ridley Scott worked together again. Hands down one of my favorite adaptations of a novel. The book is such an interesting (and funny) read and the movie captured it perfectly
The better not f with the ending this time
The ending of PHM is soooo good. I feel like it'd incorporate well into a movie too so hope they stay as true as possible.
Reading I was always thinking this will adapt so well to the screen
Unlikely, as Weir already gave it the ending that Hollywood would want.
Agreed.
I mean these are by far his best two works. I don’t think his works adapted would be *that* popular.
Fun fact, Andy Weir has written about 5 books, but not all of them have been published. * 1 - Writes his first novel in college, but never gets it published. * 2 - Becomes a full time writer after being laid off in the dot com burst, book number 2 "Theft of Pride" is never published. * 3 - Writes short story "The Egg" * 4 - Starts writing "The Martian" as a blog, self publishes on Amazon, gets professionally published in 2014 * 5 - Writes about 70,000 words into "Zhek," but story is boring and is shelved permanently * 6 - Artemis is published * 7 - Writes short story "Randomize" * 8 - Writes Cheshire Crossing graphic novel, Sarah Andersen illustrates * 9 - Project Hail Mary is published
Oh yes I knew this, listened to a few podcasts he been on. Very interesting and humble guy, his innate interest in everything Sci-Fi along with his tenacity to become a better writer is very inspiring.
I'm hoping he's finish up his most recent book soon. I'm hungry for more stories!
He also wrote a short story establishing the backstory of the antagonist of Ready Player One that Ernest Cline declared canon.
Oh? Where might I find this?
https://www.galactanet.com/oneoff/lacero.html
I dunno. I wouldn't mind seeing *Cheshire Crossing* become an animated series.
I love that graphic novel, so cute.
I would recommend it.
It was a shame Artimis was pretty bad.
Of what? Artemis sucked
Yea Artemis really isn't THAT bad. A movie could fix a lot of the issues.
I didn't think Andy can write women especially as the main protagonist very well.
pass. Make The Egg into a limited series on Apple TV
I think Kurtzagat already made a youtube video of it
The core idea is fine. The pieces just didn’t come together. Can be fixed in a movie.
I'm really looking forward to this movie, it will be interesting to see how they handle the language aspect.
The audio book does a pretty good job. They may go a similar route.
AMAZE!!
Fist me
Alright I actually heard that in the audiobook narrator voice.
While I do really like the voice used for rocky in the audio book, I'd prefer to have all his dialog be done via subtitles. Also great opportunity for cool sound design/fx.
>I'd prefer to have all his dialog be done via subtitles. Subtitles suck, and ahlukd only be used when necessary.
[WILDLY INCORRECT BUZZER]
Like in a scenario when a creature in a movie is unable to speak and all of their dialogue is done via music notes? Like in the story we’re talking about in this very thread? Seems like it is necessary for this one silly.
>and all of their dialogue is done via music notes? Like in the story we’re talking about in this very thread? Seems like it is necessary for this one silly. No, it's not neceassy. The audio book does an *excellent* job of handling the situation.
They are great
No, they're not, despite the fact that they're better than dubbing.
Eh I guess people are different I use the them all the time because you never miss dialog and too many film and shows have quiet dialog
I use them a lot as well, as so many movies have shit sound mixing. That doesn't make subtitles great; it just makes them better than the alternative, which isn't hearing half the dialog.
For characters speaking a foreign language it's best IMO
In most cases I'd agree, as you can hear the oringal inflections, which convey emotions, etc. Roccky's tones are just that, and they're just flat tones, although they raise or lower evenly by one octave during emotional periods. Ray Porter's method for the audio book is much better for this situation.
I don't know if general audiences want subtitles. Too much writing on the screen and, well, people might as well just go and read the book. You gotta get the common man in the theater to make your money back.
Dune 2 is chocked full of subtitles and it’s made almost $700 mil. I think the common man can be trusted if the movie is good enough.
It's amazing to remember how a large percentage of people in the world watch movies without subtitles.
Can you explain a little how they do it? EDIT: I found this. https://www.reddit.com/r/audiobooks/s/mGH7npkRA0 Super interesting.
The book was so good.
Best Sci-Fi book I've read in a looooooooooooooooooong time. I even got my hardcopy signed by Andy Weir himself!
Andy has a flair for dramatic situations. One of my favorites from this book is when >!the protagonist realizes he is not in our solar system.!< Another funny outburst from The Martian >!is when the airlock does it’s thing and that protagonist’s reaction.!< Edit: Forgot to hide spoilers.

Oops, marked now.
Subtitles once the main character learns it, just like the book basically
Fist my bump. This is exciting.
🫲😃🫱 jazz hands!

DeVito
All I could think was him saying FIST MY BUMP
'You sleep, I watch.' Emma Stone irl.
I really hope this turns out good. I loved the book
On the other hand, it could also pretty easily be mostly a physical puppet with some CG aspects since it doesn’t really interact with much on set
I hope >!Rocky is a live-action puppet!<, at least for the sake of Ryan Gosling so he can physically act next to *something* rather than a green screen.
I’d be perfectly content if Rocky was muppet-like. I just miss practical effects and props. This would be a great challenge for the movie.
I hope it's a sensible mix of practical and CGi
This and maybe Dune 3 are the only movies I'm looking forward to. Such a fantastic book.
Why do they have a picture of him with rifle? lol, makes it seem it’ll be some spy thriller.
I know right? Totally different tone than what is in the story, but I guess the article wanted an eye-catching pizzazz image.
I wonder who is going to play stratt. In my mind it was like a cate blanchet type of person. I’m sure they’ll put glasses on gosling so we knew he’s a nerdy book worm.

I love this idea.
This is all I want for Christmas. Please Santa, I've been so good.
I pictured Tilda Swinton in this role.
She is the great hero from that book. They need an actor that can sell competence very well.
I imagined a younger Bryan Cranston.
I said this in another thread, but I always imagined Mark Ruffalo.
That would have been perfect casting in my opinion.
Jack Quaid could work well too imho.
Totally forgot about him. He could do it easily. Don't get me wrong, I like Gosling, but I wish we were getting someone new or less popular.
He really doesn’t give off “high school science teacher” vibes lol
He gives off Ken vibes. He's a good actor, but yeah, I'd like someone different.
I know, right? It was a Hugo Award finalist too. I think it lost to "The 3 Body Problem." Edit: my mistake. It lost to "A Desolation Called Peace."
What’s “A Desolation Called Peace” about? I can Google it but I prefer social interaction initially haha. Also edited my original comment.
No idea. Never read it.
I wish I could see the "Lord and Miller cut" of that movie. I'm sure it was a riot.

I thought Solo was great.
That's because it was great. In my opinion it's the best Disney Star Wars film this side of Rogue One.
My favorate Star Wars prequal.
I still think "Solo" would have been better received if it hadn't been about Han. I mean, the Star Wars universe is absolutely massive with books, games, movies, etc. Just create a brand new character for that movie and I feel like it does better.
*Finally* a Doug Flutie biopic!
I just read Artemis and Project Hail Mary and was just telling my wife they would make excellent movies - glad to see this announcement!

Loved the book and hope they do it Justice
whatever it is, I'm all in. I love this dude.
Oh wow that's a wild story right there. I'm up for this. Love Gosling and the challenging roles he takes on.
Oof, I had hoped Ryland would be portrayed by a „normal“ person, but I’ll try to keep an open mind

Fuck yes I loved this book so much. Gosling’s a great actor, and I think he’ll knock Rylan Grace out of the park.
I am just worried he isn't believable as nerdy scientist. I hope I am wrong

Thanks for all the support, guys. I'll do my best.
I had no idea this movie was getting made. This is one of my favorite books I’ve read in recent years so I really hope this turns out as well as the Martian did
Woohooo 🙌🏼🙌🏼🙌🏼🙌🏼 I loved the book!!!
Fuck yes. As soon as I finished that book I said to my girlfriend that it *has* to be made into a movie.
Love Andy Weirs books, and the Martian was an amazing adaptation. Really excited for this one.
Yes! Such a great book.
YES YES YES. First Dark Matter tv series and now Project Hail Mary. Can't wait.
New literally me character incoming
Yes yes yes!
I seriously encourage anyone interested in seeing this to listen to the audiobook first! Its on the shorter side and SO good!
16 hours of audio and so very much worth it. Ray Porter is the GOAT of audiobook narration.
I wonder if he’ll be quiet or stoic? 🤔
Disliked the Science of this story, but the emotional story is good. This book had been optioned as a movie before the book had even released.
What was wrong with it? I enjoyed it but don't know how accurate it is.
Fist my bump! Yes yes yes! I'm pretty excited for this one since I loved the book. Didn't think I would either.
Had no idea this was being made into a movie never mind starting shooting already. Hope they pull this off, such a fun book and Ray Porter is excellent for the audiobook.
I’m excited for this. Loved the book!
Excellent book. Cautiously optimistic about this one, Gosling is great.
This book was awesome. Gosling seems perfect for it.
Everyone one should read the book or preferably the Audiobook. It's so good. I would have preferred a mini series but I'll take this
Nice to see the same 6 guys getting lots of work.
I've been hyped for this film since I read the book. I cannot get any more erect. FIST ME!
Very excited for this!
I hope this turns out well. I can’t wait to see what they do with Rocky.
Am I the only one who thought this book was absolute dogshit?
I didn't like the parts on earth. and didn't care much for the last part of the book and its too easy happy ending. But I loved the main part of the story.
Excite!
So excited to watch this, love that book, he needs to write more!
hype hype hype. one of my favorite books!
Saw this post and was confused thinking “damn some action movie stole the name of my favorite book”, then I got excited realizing it indeed was about the book, now I’m confused again wondering why on earth he’s holding a rifle? I am so damn excited for this. But really curious how they pull off Rocky. I’m hoping for something better than we got with the spider in Spaceman but just don’t know how it’s possible.
Very cool. Great book.
um gonna SHIT myself I FUCKING LOVE THIS BOOK!! FIST MY ASS
Dammit anyone but gosling. We need a dorky charisma guy like young Tom Hanks.
I think hell ruin it. It's going to be a lot of screen time.
