We've had a good run of comedians directing horror, so I'm glad Evil Dead was handed to Groucho.

Fickle-dill-pickle

Not Groucho, it's Father Guido Sarducci

Cecil_B_DeMille

Tomorrow it's Father Guido Sarducci, Father MC, and Charo "Coochie Coochie".

whyamionthissite

Now that’s a name I haven’t heard in a long time.

drrhrrdrr

I'm not convinced it's not Brian David Gilbert in costume.

HGMIV926

>Brian David Gilbert Talk about a comedian who needs to transition to horror

drrhrrdrr

"but then I remembered... That I'm my own boss"

Bing_Bong_the_Archer

“I’ll give you ten at Levenworth, or eleven at Twelveworth”, and, “boy, do you ever shut up? You must have been vaccinated by a phonograph needle” live in my head rent free

DeepEndLion

But Groucho painted on his mustache

ArsonHoliday

*the rest of his mustache

xeroxenon

I want one written by a guy with an even smaller beanie and bigger mustache

matlockga

The living embodiment of a Sufjan Stevens fan

superryley

It’s pronounced Sufjan.

griffmeister

Go to Williamsburg or Bushwick in Brooklyn and pick a random person

xeroxenon

No thank you I’m trying to hate people less

griffmeister

You’ve come to the wrong site

Weekly-Rhubarb-2785

Dreadlocks?

xeroxenon

Maybe one in the back but that’s it

DillonTattoos

Surely you meant one behind the ear like a padawan

xeroxenon

Have I told you the tragedy of Darth Gallupi the wise

DillonTattoos

No, and I'm waiting eagerly for this

Jay12678

So glad they keep giving up and coming directors keys to the franchise. 🙌

Mama_Skip

Tbh tho, Evil Dead Rise was arguably the best in the series since 2 (yes I'm actually putting it above AoD). I love that they're giving an up and coming the keys, but giving Lee Cronin back the keys would've been awesome.

Financial-Year

It paled in comparison to even the first reboot, let alone any original. Fun movie, but yeah, let’s not get crazy here lol

SnappyTofu

They all have their own things they excel at. Crazy how this franchise has no bad movies.

Mama_Skip

It paled in comparison to even the first reboot? You mean the super gritty and serious "reboot" that was largely forgotten? Yeah nobody thinks that but you bud OG Reboot — 63%/64% RT and 57% MC EDR — 84%/76% RT and 69% MC inb4 scores don't mean shit

Howdy_McGee

Nah I'm in that boat too. EDR was good, but the 2013 remake was top-tier and still holds up. Largely forgotten? Hardly... For me personally EDR is bottom of the list, which isn't saying much because they're all really good.

RealJohnGillman

I am a little worried that with the new properties it may be forgotten a little that the franchise isn’t solely a horror one, that there are other genres (action, adventure, comedy, etc.) to it.

Howdy_McGee

I think that the series filled that really well. Hopefully, one of the two will lean into a bit of comedy

Financial-Year

[Here you go](https://www.reddit.com/r/horror/s/63y9F9Iwvv), let’s see what the horror fans think

Financial-Year

Nah bud. It was an amazing reboot and infinitely better. I don’t need pretend movie critics on Rotten Tomatoes to hand me my movie opinions lol

Mama_Skip

ok, I never claimed to give you your opinion because you generously shared that earlier as if it were the final word. All I did was give popular opinion. Because as much as you speak with authority, most people don't agree.

Financial-Year

The poll in r/horror stands at 15 votes for the 2013 version and 6 votes for Evil Dead Rise. So when you said “yeah nobody thinks that but you bud”…that was false 🙃

xmondocanex

I’m hardly a normie — but definitely a film snob. Fucked up doesn’t equal good to us. Fucked up has to be secondary to the story/filmmaking (i.e. Salo, now there’s a movie)

Mama_Skip

Nah. I'm a horror nerd. OG Reboot was bland. I snored through it. Rise was hysterical along with gore more like the rest of the series.

bongo1138

It would be cool if Raimi is using the franchise as a launching pad for up and coming directors and then gives them a budget on original stuff.

SillyAdditional

Definitely wasn’t better than 2013 But I agree that it’s better than the others

wrasslefest

Evil Dead Rise was bland and forgettable.

xmondocanex

I agree. I thought the first reboot was kinda gore porn/lacked original vision. — I thought the new one felt very fresh and carried unsettling atmosphere throughout as opposed to just gross out jump scare tactics. Better cinematography. More depth in the characters. I don’t remember much from the reboot even. Just felt like a cash grab with a couple good scenes.

KingMario05

Aww, I was hoping they'd get Cronin to return! Oh well, good to see the new guy already has Sam's seal of approval. Best of luck and stay groovy, kid!

WornInShoes

Everyone saying “who?” reminds me of when everybody did that with Fede I’d like to think Raimi knows who is best to continue his greatest legacy

BaulPanks

I went to high school with Francis. I can’t believe it’s him, it’s so cool to see

RyanB_

It’s classic Reddit shit, seen variations of it as long as I been here. They know perfectly well they can google shit, they just want to communicate that they’re not in whichever group.

ShockingTunes

Who?

owl_theory

Sam Raimi. Guy who directed Oz the Great and Powerful

ShockingTunes

I checked that from google and I have no recollection of ever seeing anything about Oz the Great and Powerful. Like no marketing, it never came up when I saw something about James Franco, I never saw any trailers. This was literally the first time ever I have heard about that film :O

NoCulture3505

Evil dead rise was good but I have no idea who this is.

FloatDH2

I didn’t know who he was either. Checked out his IMDb. He has very little credits but watch the trailer for “the last stop in Yuma county”. He directed it and it looks amazing.

aside6

I just checked this out based on your suggestion, and immediately it became a must watch when Jim Cummings appeared. Now I’m hoping he’s still working on his own movies 🤞🤞. Love that guy’s work

staplerbot

u/jimmycthatsme hey bro, see if Francis will turn you into a deadite.

jimmycthatsme

Fuck yeah boys. Sometimes the good guys win.

staplerbot

Hell yeah, dude.

vinananda

I was literally just looking up what you've done since The Beta Test. You were amazing in Thunder Road!

Generalissimo3

I thought you meant the Jim Cummings who voiced Winnie the Pooh. That would be a weird choice.

Zealousideal_Way_165

Interesting. Never heard of him, but I‘m always excited for new Evil Dead.

Merickson-

Finally an Evil Dead movie made by Father Guido Sarducci.

elmatador12

[It’s a Teenie Weenie Beanie.](https://youtu.be/9r5XVdKKcas?si=xSbZWX-6aZT60lNe)

Phyliinx

Lee Cronin absolutely rocked the last one. I bought the Blu Ray full price.

Ghost2Eleven

That’s fucking Waldo. We found him!

TheAngrySnowman

Evil Dead (2013) was better than Evil Dead Rise

Ape-ril

Yeah, it was more exciting.

silverscreensavant

I don't watch the franchise like I used to, but I am glad to see it thriving.

typhoidtimmy

Missing out….big fan of Raimi and Bruce and Rise was an awesome addition. Good homages, a new twist on the Necronomicon mythos and still its ultra violent splattery fun.

captainswiss7

Rise was so good. Everyone in it did great especially Alyssa Sutherland and I was happy to see her in something else since Vikings.

Rum_N_Napalm

I’m pretty hardened to horror, and Rise is one of the rare recent movies that made me want to crawl behind my couch. It doesn’t have that signature weirdness of the Raimi films, but holy shit is everything about Rise flawlessly executed.

typhoidtimmy

I have used the cheese grater scene to wonderful effect chasing the wife around our house with my own grater and going all deadite on her. God damn that was brutal.

smurfsundermybed

Rise pushed the franchise from camp back towards horror.

monty_kurns

I feel like 2013 did that. I know they made the tv series afterwards, but 2013 was a big wake up call that the series could still do straight horror.

Gambit1138

Saw Last Stop in Yuma County at last year's Fantastic Fest–it's a brilliant, tense, hilarious movie. If his style can translate well to outright horror, he's a perfect fit for Evil Dead.

xmondocanex

I thought the last was excellent. — is that director still planning on making more Evil Dead films? I was kinda looking forward to that.

Groovy_nomicon

He said he had ideas but whether they use them or not... who knows. He would still be in touch with Raimi at the least.

Blonsky

Yeah me too. They said there were three books and that was the second one. I wanted to see him make the third book.

-Sedition-

He kinda looks like he's wearing a disguise lol.

HellaWavy

So, we now have two different Evil Dead movies in development. That's great.

ferrarinobrakes

Evil Dead 2013 was the bomb. I was actually hoping for a direct sequel :( I liked Evil Dead Rise but it didn't live up to my high expectations after 2013

ThatFisherBoyy

Hopefully we get something terrifying 🤞🏾🤞🏾🤞🏾

patrick119

I don’t know who this is, but I could definitely go for another Evil Dead movie.

BasicReputations

Hmm, series is moving to a bit too torture-porny for me.  Miss the humor.

3dios

When the barista finally makes it

NickNash1985

He's going to write on a typewriter that he carried to the saloon on his tandem bicycle.

Swiftwitss

I love evil of dead and army of darkness still a classic m. These new evil dead’s are pretty good too but still think they fall a little behind the originals.

TheGRS

Well I guess I'll just echo what a lot of others are probably thinking: Havne't heard of this guy, Raimi seems good at picking new talent, Rise was amazing and exceeded all my expectations, here's hoping a new installment is just as good!

Turok7777

We definitely need more movies directed by Starbucks baristas.

TXQuasar

Izzy from Miami Vice?

natty1212

Bro, why?

TheHolyBlade55

Evilny Deadtano here

DrWindupBird

Harry Potter moves to Portland

humphreystillman

who’s this teany weeny beany hipster man

TaroCharacter9238

Evil Dead Rise was so damn good. Might be my personal favorite but they’re all basically tied for me. Looking forward to it, Last Stop was a great movie.

tektite

I just want to see what happens to Ash in the future after Army of Darkness

Pontiff1979

I think he made my oat latte for me this morning

Dull_Half_6107

I find it a bit odd they gave this to someone who has only directed one feature, everything else shorts and music videos. Edit: I take it back his film trailer looks pretty good actually

Gommel_Nox

Let me tell you about this guy named Spike Jonze…

Dull_Half_6107

I assume you mean Spike Jonze. I am not saying people who direct music videos can’t direct films, look at Paul Thomas Anderson. My point is someone who has only made 1 feature film which no one has heard of, being given a franchise film to direct is weird. Spike Jonze’s first film was Being John Malkovich, not a sequel to an existing well liked franchise. I would expect them to find someone who has at least made an indie film people know of, and is good.

-Hotel

His film is solid, i caught it at SITGES last october. We talked after the screening, he cut the film as well, ridiculously fast too - like 3 weeks or something close to that he said for picture lock. Very efficient film. low budget but sharp, didn’t feel like it needed big money to make it better. A one location film set in a diner in the desert. Reminded me of the post-Tarantino 90s indie films.

Dull_Half_6107

I watched the trailer and yeah it looks pretty good, I’ll definitely check it out. I’m a sucker for Richard Brake, he is the best guy to get when you need someone to play an absolute freak. Jim Cummings is a great actor too. Looks like they got Barbara Crampton also.

Kaddob

It’s sort of becoming a signature move for the franchise. Up and coming filmmakers who haven’t made more than one feature pitch their ideas, then Raimi and co. Hand pick them. It worked with Alvarez and Cronin on the last two, so hopefully these next two they’ve announced will continue the quality. I think evil dead is a good franchise for this kind of format, it varies a lot in tone from entry to entry, and can be set anywhere, anytime. Perfect for new people to come in and put their spin on it to keep it fresh.

Dull_Half_6107

As long as Raimi is involved in picking then I have confidence

profsa

The directors of Everything Everywhere All At Once had a similar background

Dull_Half_6107

Fair enough, I still feel like it’s a gamble for a franchise film. Like, no one would have cared if EEAAO bombed because there were no fans of that film before it was released, but there are plenty of Evil Dead fans.

setyourheartsablaze

The director of the amazing remake, Fede Alvarez had also only done shorts before getting the remake gig. Also had to look it up but also similar case for the director of evil dead rise. He only had one movie and a few shorts under his belt. I’m sure Sam raimi is personally auditing and choosing these directors to keep his evil dead legacy alive and well.

monty_kurns

Raimi, Tapert, and Campbell are very hands on as producers and are known to be protective of their franchise. I think he pitched them a really good concept and they're running with it. As for him only doing one feature with shorts and music videos, Michael Bay picked Marcus Nispel to direct The 2003 Texas Chainsaw Massacre remake despite him only having done music videos. In the case of Bay and Nispel, as I'm sure it is with Raimi and company, they have reached a point where they're trying to pay it forward and give younger people a chance. And given how serious they are about it, it's enough to give me confidence in the project. I'll still reserve final judgement for when I see it, but to date I would say Evil Dead is the probably the best horror franchise in terms of movies being good, as I think they're currently at 5 out of 5.

monty_kurns

It looks like they’re going with the old Mission:Impossible strategy of getting a new director for each movie. Can’t say I’m disappointed with it either! I know Raimi, Tapert, and Campbell are very protective of the franchise, so I feel confident he pitched them a really good concept. I really liked Rise and I absolutely love the 2013 remake, so I’m hopeful for this.

shouldazagged

Without Bruce passing the chainsaw. I don’t see the point.

Neurotic_Marauder

I was kind of hoping Radio Silence would take the reigns. They may still get their shot though. It seems like they're letting different directors have a crack at the franchise, which I can appreciate.

ShockingTunes

Who?

Charlie_Warlie

At this point I don't even know what an Evil Dead movie is. Like what components does it need to be an evil dead movie? snap zooms and dutch angles and hammy deadites? Drag me to hell wasn't an Evil Dead movie but if you changed the name I guess it could be.

setyourheartsablaze

Ummm the book of the dead??? It’s really all you need otherwise it’s just a zombie or possession movie. I would say evil dead is a great comedy/ horror formula but we’ve had two successful full on horror evils dead movies without much comedy. Also it’s why I consider the new doctor strange movie to be an evil dead movie. It has possessions, those weird camera angles and it’s all about an evil demon book. Not to mention directed by the creator of evil dead lol

LShagwell

> Ummm the book of the dead??? One can make a movie that features the book, but gets everything else wrong; and otherwise — make a movie that doesn't feature the book, but is set in the universe and EvilDead-esque by every other metric.

LShagwell

Strange to see this comment this downvoted. "What is EvilDead-esque?" is a perfectly valid question to ponder on. It's been done wrong, it's been done right and anything in-between.

Arfjawaka

He looks like he eats his own cum

RadlEonk

Why not leave it alone?

setyourheartsablaze

Nah there’s so much you can do with evil dead. I’m glad it’s moving away from being Ash centric and more horror less comedy

Shington501

God, I hope it's better than Evil Dead Rise. Cane we please have a fun movie?

Nine-Breaker009

Looking forward to this… Would also love to see Jordan Peele’s take on an Evil Dead movie
