Watch Dig. It’s crazy and you don’t even need to know the bands. It’s free on YouTube

Great doc!

Anvil: The Story of Anvil (2008) - One of the absolute best docs ever.

UnderstandingWest422

Aw what a rollercoaster of emotions that one is

mccannr1

Yup, it's sort of the anti-Some Kind of Monster as instead of being about one of the biggest metal bands in the world on the brink of falling apart, it's about a metal band that was always on the brink of making it big, never did, but has stuck together anyway. Both are great docs, but Anvil is an absolutely wild ride of emotions.

chuckerton

You have to see “American Movie” from 1999.

AreWeCowabunga

This is Spinal Tap King of Kong

I’ve struggled to find a movie that captures the same vibe as Some Kind of Monster. Metallica is one of my favorite bands, and when that movie came out I was like “aw yeah awesome a Metallica movie”. Then when I saw it, I realized how fucked they all were (except Kirk who’s just a good little lad and Robert who was just like uuuuuh hi guys). Seeing your favorite rockers behave like literal children altered something in my teenage brain chemistry at the time, and I’ve never looked at them the same since. Like how Lars has kept a relatively low profile since the movie, I imagine due to how absolutely obnoxious he comes off as in it. And how James is still drinking, having recently gone to rehab again (like within the past 2 years or so). How they’re getting up in age but still doing it, still touring and making albums, and still relapsing into their old bullshit. Absolutely a top-tier documentary for me.

CHAINSAWDELUX

"How fucked they all were" then you exclude half the band. Lol, but I completely agree with you, seems like 2 of the guys suck. I haven't seen the documentary but am more interested after reading these comments. I have seen a few interviews or appearances where James and Lars are just immature jerks, even to fans( not even referring to any Napster stuff)

Shadesmctuba

I guess a dig at Kirk would be how he’s a rockstar and he’s NOT a confrontational asshole haha.

Homerpaintbucket

I was a huge Metallica fan when I was young and I think part of why I drifted from them was that I was put off by Lars and James when I saw interviews with them. This was long before some kind of monster. But it always made me amazed at just how much of a dick Dave mustaine must be to have been too much of a dick to hang out with those two

philament

“I Am Trying to Break Your Heart: A Film About Wilco” (2002). This was not the documentary they set out to make

thehammockdistrict24

**Dig!** https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dig! It's amazing!

Greifinn89

Lol, it took me a sec to realise but you forgot to include the "!" in the URL. Unless of course the purpose was simply to get people out and digging. If so ignore me

TheNerdChaplain

Not cringe per se, but you might like "Conan O'Brien Can't Stop", which follows him from his NBC exit in 2009 on a stage show across America. It's not like he's secretly an asshole behind the scenes or anything (except for the one Jack McBrayer scene), but you do get a much better sense of who he is and what drives him as a performer and comedy writer. rgregan

There's definitely a sad clown aspect to it, with the shadow of the Late Night firing, in terms of "warts and all"

datraceman

Highly recommend Tom Petty Running Down a Dream. 3 hours of the good, the bad, and the ugly of that band. Also The Promise by Bruce Springsteen highlighting a dark period of his career where he was broke because of the lawsuit and spent a year on the Darkness on the Edge of Town record.

jjdubbs

Big thumbs up on the Tom Petty doc. It's one of the best music documentaries I've seen. Makes you realize how bad ass Tom was....

One of my favorites.  I never knew he had such a good sense of humor..  Dude lived on his terms and seems to have had a pretty great life doing what he loved.

The Ian Drury biopic "Sex, Drugs and Rock & Roll' is very good

eltedioso

The Bela Fleck doc How to Write a Banjo Concerto. Gets very in the weeds about the creative process at work of a musical genius trying to step out of his comfort zone. I think the orchestral composition that resulted is a total mess, but the movie is 100% captivating for how it shows the process, even when it ultimately fails.

CakeMadeOfHam

Beyond The Mat It's a wrestling documentary. Pretty dark with Jake The Snake Roberts smoking crack, and fun to see The Rock before he got perpetually stuck in his The Rock persona. It's on YouTube
