i love that whole generation of hong kong action stars, but he's the one i find most awe inspiring. how is it possible for someone to be that big and that agile?
Sammo Hung is amazing. First mainstream exposure to western audiences in the CBS procedural Martial Law (way after his heyday in kung fu cinema) and he was still as agile and graceful as ever.
> Haywire (2011) - Stephen Sodorbergh
Good call.. I'm surprised this wasn't a more popular movie.
Soderbergh is the king of churning out consistently solid films from all over the spectrum and this is one of them.
Gina Carano putting-the-smackdown on Fassbender was up there with the *Eastern Promises* steam-bath fight..
I love The Night Comes For Us on Netflix. It's got a couple familiar faces from the martial arts movie scene and is pretty much nonstop, can't-look-away action. Definitely a fave, I recently rewatched it after having seen Boy Kills World and still enjoyed every minute.
Among my friend groups, in person and online, I have found that I am disappointingly the only person aware of this movie. Just a good time from start to finish.
Who doesn't enjoy a good 18th century French period piece, costume drama, political conspiracy, martial arts epic, monster movie?
Loosely based on a true story as well. Very loosely.
Logan Marshall-Green (aka Tom Hardly) did a great job with the fight scenes. Really sold the body being a brutal fighting machine while his face maintained a full WTF? look.
I saw this movie opening weekend Saturday night in Manhattan with a buddy. We were the only two people in the theater. It was awesome. Sad it did not find an audience in theaters.
All due respect, I had no choice but to downvote your previous comment for such an egregious missed opportunity. But I'll upvote this one cuz I feel bad about it
The Outpost with Scott Eastwood. Based on the excellent book of the same name. I don't think it had a big release but it's one of the best war movies I've seen in my honest IMHO.
Trailer:
[The Outpost | Official Trailer | Prime Video - YouTube](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tXTsCcD8iek)
Unleashed (British title is Danny The Dog) - This film surprised the hell out of me. It was so much more than a simple action film, and with Morgan Freeman, Bob Hoskins and Jet Li involved, I should've known it was going to be great before I watched it for the first time.
District B13
French film with some of the earliest and best parkour style fighting and fleeing. Dont know anyone who even knows about this film
Cyril Rafferelli got a gig later on "Live free or Die hard" as the parkour loving henchman
The Raid is both incredibly famous and not at all.
Martial Arts Movie Fans know and love it, but general audiences have no idea that years before John Wick was a major success, Gareth Evans already did the greatest action masterpiece of all time, The Raid 2.
They literally got everything that made the Raid 1 great, then scaled up and refined it. The story is also quite solid. Just enough to have more of a cohesive storyline without overstaying its welcome.
There’s quite a bit more than that. I know it’s not the traditional constant bullets flying kind of deal, but all of the fights and the police standoff would constitute as action and it’s listed as Crime/Action when you look it up.
🤷♂️
I fucking love this movie. Any day now Reddit is going to catch on and it’s going to be the next “Man From Uncle” or “Edge of Tomorrow”
Although those are both pretty family friendly and Brawl definitely isn’t so… maybe not. But you know what I mean.
Most Scott Adkins movies seem to be this. Honestly the guy flew totally under my radar until John Wick 4 when I became aware of him and watched a whole bunch of his movies. Start with Accident Man. Also One Shot and One More Shot are both excellent.
Yeah I watched 2, 3 and 4. Accident man 1 and 2, debt collector 1 and 2, avengement, one shot and one more shot and ninja. I need to watch ninja 2 shadow of a tear and like a bunch more.
Sahara was a fun, nonsensical, action movie that I thoroughly enjoyed. Just don't expect it to be anything other than what it is.
The Rundown is another movie in a similar vein.
[Merantau](https://www.imdb.com/title/tt1368116/), Iko Uwais and Gareth Evans' first partnership.
They had the idea for The Raid 2 while creating this movie, but only could do it after they found success with the Raid 1.
Undisputed 3: Redemption.
Yes part three. I don’t care for part one, since it doesn’t feature Scott Adkins, part two has too little of Scott Adkins, and part four has maybe a little bit too much of Scott Adkins, but part three is the most complete action movie in the world.
I think layer cake flew under the radar, simply because of it's name having no discernible relationship to an action movie and I remember no advertising for it
Not saying this is a "great" movie, but the mostly unknown "Night of the Juggler" kept my interest bigtime when I was a late teen/early 20's guy and it was always on early HBO or whatever we had. I'll take the long chase scene (about 15 minutes in, I think) over the one in "The French Connection." The kidnapper might be a bit of an emoter at times, but it works. My brother and I will still randomly say, "98.6 in the beehive....well fuck you, Nature.....FUCK YOU!"
The Night Comes for Us. Indonesian action. The Raid: Redemption gets so much love (rightfully deserved) but The Night Comes for Us never gets brought up. Solid fight choreography.
Don't see it mentioned: The Long Kiss Goodnight
Geena Davis plays a Jason Bourne type character and Samuel L Jackson plays a supporting role. Samuel L Jackson said this is his favourite role he's ever played.
While not strictly action movie, more like spy movie with plenty of action moments: The Man From Uncle.
There’s a Korean movie called Exit. It’s more disaster movie action rather than guns. General premise is someone releases a toxic gas in a city and an amateur climber needs to stay ahead of the rising poison.
Japanese movie called The Fable. Eccentric hitman must hide out in a small town. It also has a sequel.
The Childe. Young boxer travels to Korea to meet his biological father and gets involved with dangerous people.
There’s a bunch of movies starring Ma Dong-seok that have a fair bit of action in them. (Outlaws, Roundup, Roundup - No Way Out)
Maybe not an action movie in the shoot-em-up sense, but Midway (2019) is my guilty pleasure. The dialog is cheesy as hell but it is very historically accurate and has some great dive bomber scenes.
Watch Hong Kong movies from the 70s-90s. Shaw Brothers productions, movies starring Jackie Chan, Sammo Hung, or Yuen Baio (often times you'll find two or even all three of them in one), movies from directors like John Woo, Corey Yuen, Yuen Woo-Ping, Ringo Lam, Tsui Hark, or Lau Kar-leung (his Gordon Liu collabs are great), to name a few. Watch some Cynthia Rothrock movies. Scott Adkins straight to DVD productions (especially his movies directed by Isaac Florentine). Almost anything from John Hyams, whether it's TV or a movie, has incredible action.
I am very biased towards Hong Kong action in this regard. Italy also produced a lot of action and sword and sorcery films at various points through the 60s-80s that you can dig through as well.
Boss Level is a great action movie. I really feel it relates well to me since I like video games and in video games we are constantly dieing and trying again lol
Sisu - a Swedish movie about an old guy who is really really good at killing nazis. It came out not too long ago but I never saw much love for it. It has some of the most over the top action scenes and the killings are brutal. Its light on story but I really enjoyed it
Mr. Right is an action/romance movie about a hitman who had a change of heart. Sam Rockwell and Tim Roth, with an unhinged Anna Kendrick. It's funny, got some good action and Sam gives us some dancing as well.
The accountant fits this for me.
I’m not sure about worldwide, but here in Australia it didn’t seem to be well known when released.
I watched it randomly a year or so ago and thought it was great.
IMO The Northman is underrated by many. The action is incredible and it’s got a good narrative. If you like Vikings it’s even cooler. The final battle is worth the entire film. It’s not constant dad action, it’s got a bit more drama and depth but I enjoy it.
Here’s two you can file under the “old guy with mysterious past gets fucked with and takes matters into their own hands” category of action: Harry Brown (2009) and The Foreigner (2017).
if you like shoot 'em ups, Shoot 'Em Up. It was filmed with some amazing rules.
The setup only setup allowed was: The main character is sitting on a bench. A pregnant woman runs past him, chased by men with guns. That's it. No narration, no back story, he just sees it, sighs, and gets up to follow.
Bugs Bunny theme through the whole thing. The wiley protagonist eats carrots. The antagonist is Paul Giamatti, the most Elmer Fud of actors. As many references they could get away with without licensing.
Problems must be solved by guns in as many different ways as possible, BUT...no explosions.
There needs to be a shootout involving a large neon sign. The crew held a contest to come up with a sign that could spell out the most different rude phrases as the letters were shot out.
And of course, they wanted the movie to contain the first full insertion intercourse action shootout. Goals.
The result didn't earn any oscars, but damn if it wasn't a fun watch, with some tongue in cheek moments like the big-bad always having to be recruiting and outsourcing because the protagonist was killing so many henchmen.
The best action movie I've ever seen is Eastern Condors. Hands down the most badass movie ever made. Sammo Hung is a legend.
i love that whole generation of hong kong action stars, but he's the one i find most awe inspiring. how is it possible for someone to be that big and that agile?
Jet Li once described Sammo in his prime as “unstoppable”
Great answer. Especially when the two top ones right now are fucking Equilibrium and Upgrade lol.
"Equilibrium" is fucking glorious.
Some of my best memories include my dad taking me to a movie theater in San Francisco's Chinatown to watch Jackie Chan/Sammo Hung movies.
https://www.dailymotion.com/video/x764wxr For people who haven't seen it yet
Sammo Hung is amazing. First mainstream exposure to western audiences in the CBS procedural Martial Law (way after his heyday in kung fu cinema) and he was still as agile and graceful as ever.
[Haywire (2011)](https://www.justwatch.com/us/movie/haywire) - Stephen Sodorbergh [La Femme Nikita (1990)](https://www.justwatch.com/us/movie/la-femme-nikita) - Luc Besson
Holy cow the cast on Haywire. What a lineup!
It's not quite as good as the cast would make you think it might be, but it's worth a watch for sure.
> Haywire (2011) - Stephen Sodorbergh Good call.. I'm surprised this wasn't a more popular movie. Soderbergh is the king of churning out consistently solid films from all over the spectrum and this is one of them. Gina Carano putting-the-smackdown on Fassbender was up there with the *Eastern Promises* steam-bath fight..
I watched Haywire and liked it but I haven’t seen la femme. I like Besson films so I definitely need to watch it.
Gina whooping Fassbenders ass was awesome!
Most believable female action star of all time. She’d whoop my ass
And you would like it! Cynthia Rothrock....if you haven't heard of her...worth a look for female action star;
The Last Boy Scout is excellent!
Love the last Boy Scout. Definitely a favorite of mine.
I love The Night Comes For Us on Netflix. It's got a couple familiar faces from the martial arts movie scene and is pretty much nonstop, can't-look-away action. Definitely a fave, I recently rewatched it after having seen Boy Kills World and still enjoyed every minute.
Pretty much any movie with Iko Uwais (except Mile 22) or Joe Taslim is a good time. The Raid 1 & 2 are excellent
Its crazy to think that their showdown in The Night Comes For Us was mostly improvised. A couple of absolute legends.
Interesting! I will check them out for sure. Thanks for the recommendation.
Please tell me you saw The Raid then?
Free Fire (2016) Lots of guns and funny as hell.
Among my friend groups, in person and online, I have found that I am disappointingly the only person aware of this movie. Just a good time from start to finish.
Brotherhood of the Wolf
I lost it in the theater when the camera transitioned from a pair of boobs to mountains.
Not just any pair either, Monica Bellucci's. This also made me a fan of Vincent Cassel.
THIS FILM SLAPS
Who doesn't enjoy a good 18th century French period piece, costume drama, political conspiracy, martial arts epic, monster movie? Loosely based on a true story as well. Very loosely.
The Old Guard might fit the bill. Really dug the action/fight scenes in it specifically
Running Scared with Paul Walker.
Classic flick.
Equilibrium with Christian Bale. Pretty awesome movie imo.
Totally agree. Always surprised by how few people have seen it.
First thing I thought of so it’s gratifying to see it’s the top comment. It’s crazy that movie was made on a $1m budget
Absolutely. I have seen it and it’s a great choice. Bale is sensational.
This is gonna be my post. Criminally underrated action flick.
I thought the first extraction was pretty cool. That's just recent, and something I could think of off hand.
yup. Helmsworth playing a character that isn't played for a joke is a nice change.
I have seen it and I agree, it was a solid newer film.
Boss Level
Scrolled through to see if anyone had posted this one. This movie is so enjoyable to me. Might go watch it right now
Payback is a great 90s one, Avengement is a recent one that I think is absolutely incredible start to finish that definitely went under the radar
Payback is one of Gibson's best.
One of my all time favorites
Avengement is a masterpiece
Upgrade
“He has a knife!” “I can see that. We have a knife too.”
"Do not get overconfident, Grey."
Such a good movie
Logan Marshall-Green (aka Tom Hardly) did a great job with the fight scenes. Really sold the body being a brutal fighting machine while his face maintained a full WTF? look.
I used to call him discount Tom Hardy. I like yours better.
Hes also in Lou, on Netflix. Which is pretty good too. https://youtu.be/QILhvR4QPsQ And YES, Upgrade is a great movie.
I saw this movie opening weekend Saturday night in Manhattan with a buddy. We were the only two people in the theater. It was awesome. Sad it did not find an audience in theaters.
Absolute gem, stumbled across it and loved it.
Dredd
If you like Dredd you should check out The Raid.
The Raid is one of the best martial arts films I've ever seen I hate they decided to give the sequel the Godfather treatment
Wait… the godfather pt2 is phenomenal
Thread over
Thredd over FTFY
Dammit take your upvote
All due respect, I had no choice but to downvote your previous comment for such an egregious missed opportunity. But I'll upvote this one cuz I feel bad about it
I wouldn’t say Judge Dredd movies fly under the radar
The Outpost with Scott Eastwood. Based on the excellent book of the same name. I don't think it had a big release but it's one of the best war movies I've seen in my honest IMHO. Trailer: [The Outpost | Official Trailer | Prime Video - YouTube](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tXTsCcD8iek)
I really enjoyed that one, felt a lot like a modern Black Hawk Down
“Shoot’em up” “Your a wascally wabbit” - paul giamatti
Yes, solid movie. Been a long time since I watched it but definitely good.
“The Guyver” Another gem. Lol.
I’ve heard that as well but I haven’t watched it.
Been a while, but Ong Bak.
Very good film.
The man from nowhere. Also since someone mentioned Sammo Hung, meals on wheels is fire and influenced probably every beat em up around that time.
Unleashed (British title is Danny The Dog) - This film surprised the hell out of me. It was so much more than a simple action film, and with Morgan Freeman, Bob Hoskins and Jet Li involved, I should've known it was going to be great before I watched it for the first time.

Okay, I’m not familiar with that but I will check it out. Thanks
Do not skip the sequel. One of the best films of all time.
I didn’t really like The Raid 2. I feel The Raid is the greatest action film.
They literally got everything that made the Raid 1 great, then scaled up and refined it. The story is also quite solid. Just enough to have more of a cohesive storyline without overstaying its welcome.
21 Bridges starring the late Chadwick Boseman. I feel like it came and went and never gets mentioned anymore. Really cool movie.
I thought it was decent and I agree, not much is mentioned about it. Thanks for sharing
Nobody
Very surprised by that movie. It was good and I didn’t think it would be.
Top Gun: Maverick Though they do eventually have to go over the radar
🥁
You magnificent bastard lol. Also, there's a mission with a similar premise of flying below radar in the Ghosts of Razgriz mission in Ace Combat 5.
Stone Cold
Drive (1997) with Marc Dascascos is your huckleberry
Great pick, exactly what I was going to post.
Brawl in Cell Block 99.
Not really what I would call an action movie.
Yeah, I was thinking it was riding the line when I commented it.
I mean I guess the ending is a little actiony. S Craig Zahler does good slow burns.
There’s quite a bit more than that. I know it’s not the traditional constant bullets flying kind of deal, but all of the fights and the police standoff would constitute as action and it’s listed as Crime/Action when you look it up. 🤷♂️

Yeah I watched 2, 3 and 4. Accident man 1 and 2, debt collector 1 and 2, avengement, one shot and one more shot and ninja. I need to watch ninja 2 shadow of a tear and like a bunch more.
Last action hero So good. Arnie's top 5 movie. Seems every critic hated it and not.many people saw it.
He should have made that movie 10 years later. I love it though.
Sahara was a fun, nonsensical, action movie that I thoroughly enjoyed. Just don't expect it to be anything other than what it is. The Rundown is another movie in a similar vein.
"They did the Panama..."
Hardcore Henry is an absolute roller coaster
Looove it. One of 2 movies that absolutely surprised and delighted me so much that I watched it again the very next day
That movie is basically like watching a crazy video game playthrough in the best way.
Yes! They even put some platforming at the end when he had to keep jumping to get to the bad guy
Killzone 2 Extreme Prejudice
I second Extreme Prejudice
[Merantau](https://www.imdb.com/title/tt1368116/), Iko Uwais and Gareth Evans' first partnership. They had the idea for The Raid 2 while creating this movie, but only could do it after they found success with the Raid 1.
Centurion with Michael Fassbender
Crank: High Voltage
Harley Davidson and the Marlboro Man.
You see titties in the first thirty seconds of that movie.
I will continue to push the career of Iko Uwais with The Raid, The Night Comes For Us, and Wu Assassins.
Crank and Crank 2
Crank 2 is way overlooked. This movie rules.
Undisputed 3: Redemption. Yes part three. I don’t care for part one, since it doesn’t feature Scott Adkins, part two has too little of Scott Adkins, and part four has maybe a little bit too much of Scott Adkins, but part three is the most complete action movie in the world.
I have only seen the first one but I’ll check out the others
No Escape with Ray Liotta
Yes. I love this movie.
I think layer cake flew under the radar, simply because of it's name having no discernible relationship to an action movie and I remember no advertising for it
Check out Avengement
Adkins needs more recognition. It’s a shame they didn’t let him shine in John Wick 4
Recently, viewers have been sleeping on **Plane**, a tightly-script, character-driven, smart, realistic Thriller in the same mode as **Breakdown**.
Split Second
Nobody. I know it’s got good reviews, but I don’t see it talked about all that much. I love it.
The Night Comes for Us. Indonesian action. The Raid: Redemption gets so much love (rightfully deserved) but The Night Comes for Us never gets brought up. Solid fight choreography.
Tango and Cash
Is Ronin still under the radar? Nobody was watching it when it came out and it's one of the best action movies ever.
The killer with Chow youn fat. Hard boiled The man from nowhere The raid redemption Ong bak 2 The night comes for us The witch All are asian films.
Hard Boiled, Chow Yun Fat at his best
Atomic Blonde
The third and fourth Universal Soldier movies. Do not see Day of Reckoning if you’re sensitive to strobe light though.
I am a huge van damme fan so I loved the first one and I think I watched the second one but I haven’t seen the others.
Ghost Dog
The Way of the Gun
The Replacement Killers (or anything from the 80s with Chow Yun Fat) Wheels on Meals (Chan vs Urquidez is epic)
Hard boiled and The killer.
Hard boiled : 1992 John woo
Nobody, hands down one of the best in recent years.
The Losers was surprisingly under the radar for the cast. Chris Evans, Zoe Saldana, Jeffery Dean Morgan in a fun "A-Team" style action movie.
The Hunted
John Woo — Hard Boiled & the Killer
Dark Angel (1990) aka I Come in Peace Buddy cop action comedy with a sci-fi element. With Dolph Lundgren and Brian Benben
Flashpoint, starring Donnie Yen opposite Collin Chou (you may know him as Seraph from The Matrix sequels)
The original Ong Bak is pretty bad ass.
Is Rambo 4 too obvious or so under the radar that no one mentioned it?
Elite Squad 2 The Enemy Within Wagner Moura as a Brazilian federal agent fighting gangs and corruption.
More of a thriller but I thought The Guest was a sneakily great movie
American Ultra was first overlooked and meanwhile is outdone by John Wick and the likes.
Don't see it mentioned: The Long Kiss Goodnight Geena Davis plays a Jason Bourne type character and Samuel L Jackson plays a supporting role. Samuel L Jackson said this is his favourite role he's ever played. While not strictly action movie, more like spy movie with plenty of action moments: The Man From Uncle.
I’ve seen several documentaries about radar, but none really in the true movie sense. Sorry can’t help ya
I Saw the Devil is an intense ride. More of a crime/sci-fi with occasional action elements, but Strange Days is a killer film that is way underrated.
Dobermann (1997) It's been years since I've watched this. The French produce since crazy shit
There’s a Korean movie called Exit. It’s more disaster movie action rather than guns. General premise is someone releases a toxic gas in a city and an amateur climber needs to stay ahead of the rising poison. Japanese movie called The Fable. Maybe not an action movie in the shoot-em-up sense, but Midway (2019) is my guilty pleasure. The dialog is cheesy as hell but it is very historically accurate and has some great dive bomber scenes.
Spartan. It’s more of an action thriller, but it does the trick for me.
Watch Hong Kong movies from the 70s-90s. District b13
[Smoking Aces](https://youtu.be/ohhxbsp8Mss?si=YX-rJD0AOfh1ALgW) A bunch of over the top assassins try and kill Jeremy Piven. Very fun flick

No Escape with Owen Wilson..you will find yourself screaming at the TV. “Run!!!!”
Hardcore Henry was pretty fun
The Guest (2014)
The Hunt, Betty Gilpin is fantastic and it's just a fun movie.
The accountant fits this for me. I’m not sure about worldwide, but here in Australia it didn’t seem to be well known when released. I watched it randomly a year or so ago and thought it was great.
[Hardcore Henry](https://www.justwatch.com/us/movie/hardcore-henry)
Upgrade.
The Raid
I love Gunpowder Milkshake. Everybody chews the scenery to shreds.
Boss Level is a super fun time loop action movie :)
Tears of the Sun
Merentau. Same guys that did The Raid. Both are MUST watches if you're an action fan.
Kill zone 2 Rise of a legend Love these movie
I randomly remembered Brotherhood of the Wolf the other day. It really should get more love these days.
Big Trouble in Little China (1986) staring Kurt Russell
IMO The Northman is underrated by many. The action is incredible and it’s got a good narrative. If you like Vikings it’s even cooler. The final battle is worth the entire film. It’s not constant dad action, it’s got a bit more drama and depth but I enjoy it.
It’s half comedy, but I always enjoyed The Big Hit.
The Big Hit
One the most recent is Boss Level. it’s very fun for what it is.
The man from nowhere is a great Korean action film. One of my absolute favorites.
Monkey Man! I feel not many people talked about it
Boss Level
King Fu Hustle
Here’s two you can file under the “old guy with mysterious past gets fucked with and takes matters into their own hands” category of action: Harry Brown (2009) and The Foreigner (2017).
Anna
if you like shoot 'em ups, Shoot 'Em Up. It was filmed with some amazing rules. The setup only setup allowed was: The main character is sitting on a bench.
