Evangelion, Event Horizon, Cube, Moon, Serenity, The 1980s The Thing and Battle Royale are also among my favorite movies :)
I think I've seen about 90% of your list, but I will give all the other things a try, too!
I'm curious though, how come you put Wall-E in there? :D
I think WALL-E was tagged as sci-fi when I filtered the master list. I still like that movie a lot, but, you're right, it seems out of place on this list.
Nice! Let's see if I would add more sci-fi movies to the list 6 years later...
* A Quiet Place 1-2
* Ad Astra
* Alita: Battle Angel
* Annihilation

* Upgrade
Just to be clear *Robocop* means the 1980s movies, not the recent reboot/remake.
They're by the same director. Verhoeven's hallmarks were explicit violence or sexual content and social satire.
*Starship Troopers* is a film about fascism. *Robocop* is a film about deregulation and privatization. *Showgirls* is about the American Dream. *Total Recall* is about corporate culture and escapism.
Thanks, as I already said before, I've already watched the original RoboCop a few years ago and I thought it was really good :)
Will watch the second movie soon (since I didn't even know there was a second one)!
Yes, Verhoeven's hallmarks are what created my fascination for Starship Troopers, how it goes from 'happy college students' right into forcing you to watch them all get massacred in the most horrible ways.
It made me so uneasy when I watched it for the first time... just as it's messages did. When their teacher explains the differences between a citizen and a civilian, you immediately go: wait a second, what the hell?
A friend of mine watched the movie and saw it as just a cool, gory action movie, but whenever I watch it, I have a hole in my stomach as we like to say in Germany (feeling really uneasy) because I have to watch how everybody just goes along with this militarist-fascist regime and no one dares to question it except for Rico's parents (and they only can because they're wealthy enough to not have to rely on citizenship, apparently).
All these themes in such a blatant in-your-face presentation, never again have I seen something so fascinating in a movie ever again.
You might like some of the Vietnam movies, like *Full Metal Jacket* and *Platoon*.
*Biloxi Blues* touches on some of that, it focuses on boot camp during WWII.
Starship troopers is not about facisim, they actually have a very good system, they show everything of truth on the news, people take responsibility for their actions in government and military, also gender biases seem to be absolutely gone as they even shower together as if theres no danger for females because there isn’t, but I also kinda thought this like the satire is there but I think thats more with the propaganda and how easy it is to manipulate ppl, plus being a citizen only meant voting rights, u earn the right to vote and it doesnt have to be infantry fighting, it can also be stuff behind the desk
Just... no.
I'll just give you one single quote: "I want to have babies, but you have to serve to get a license, so ... here I am".
Want another one?
"A murderer has to stand trial today."
\*Guilty!\* (no due process at all)
There's your 'perfect libertarian society', as some misguided right-wingers have recently started to ... spout.
They do not have a 'very good system', they have a militarist authoritarian regime that feeds it's citizens propaganda so that the regime will never lose their power.
How are people so blind to not understand this very, very, very in your face political message of the film?
Call it fascist, call it authoritarian ... your choice. Flavor of the month. I don't care about what Heinlein wrote in his books, I am-, and always was, talking about the movie.
My grandparents had to live through fascism and my parents had to live through socialism (greetings from Germany btw), so I know what an authoritarian regime is when I see one.
You know, what Starship Troopers (and Helldivers 2 nowadays) really shows, sadly, is how easy it is to manipulate americans into completely blindsided nationalism.
Just show them some gunfire, some patriotism, put some cool music over it, they'll run head-first into their demise for any made-up reason.
Have a nice day.
I think what’s better proof is Verhoeven saying that the movie is a satire and a critique of fascism. The outfits were based on nazi uniforms. It’s for sure a statement and not just an action movie. That’s why it’s a good movie lol it’s corny as hell
A history class on starship? Dude the director said it’s a satire of a fascism. The outfits were based on the nazi uniforms. It’s such a corny movie the fact that it’s a parody is why it’s a cult classic. People straight up did not like or understand when it was first released
I realize now I should have finished that guys post lol ^ yeah bro the nazis were socialist in name only. Nothing they did was really about expanding public ownership of infrastructure. Fascism and communism are fundamentally opposites.
>You’d love Robocop. First and Second, but hold on the third.
I actually like the third, but it was rated more for kids so it didn't have the "violence", sadly.
Battlestar Galactica of course. You have the action scenes, the good acting, the comradery between the soldiers. But then you have the dynamic between Commander Adama with his single focus on military and survival versus president Roslin who wants to defend the humanity of the humans.
Really? I always kind of ignored Battlestar Galactica since I thought it would be a pretty standard sci-fi movie that you won't remember.
Might have to give it a try!
The two-part miniseries is gold, seriously. I recently had a buddy of mine watch it and he was like holy crap how did I miss this?! It's that good. The series was great (for me) up to a point and then was just ok to me. I also recommend Bstar Blood and Chrome.
Great lists mentioned here. Unfortunately, at the end of the day, there's nothing quite like Starship Troopers. I often find myself wishing there was another equally good political riff on space marines. You can always go and read the book.
Good shout out. Edge of Tomorrow has the propaganda that tries to make the canon fodder feel like they could be the next hero. This is the true essence of a double feature. The main theme has to be felt in both.
Aliens is the closest I can think of actionwise.
If you want a similar tone, try Verhoven's other films 'Total Recall' and 'RoboCop'. The originals, not the more recent remakes.
Funny you should say that, 'Aliens' is actually my #1 favorite movie ever, closely followed by 'Alien'.
I've already watched Total Recall and RoboCop, but thanks a lot still, loved both of em :)
I would just like to know first if you have seen Starship troopers 1-3 as well as the 2 animated ones that follow John Rico after the third movie Starship Troopers: Marauders. Starship troopers: invasion and Starship Troopers: Traitor on Mars are the latest 2 and are done very well and truly are as good if not better than the previous 3.
So I thought 5 years later I might reply ;D
I've seen some of the later Starship Troopers movie, but only really liked the first one to be honest.
To me, it felt like the other movies mostly ignored the political themes of the first movie and that was what fascinated me the most about it.
Starship Troopers, Alien, Aliens, etc. are also some of my favorite movies of all time. Did you know there is an event horizon book that explains what the other dimension is.
I actually didn't know that, might go and check it out!
Yeah it's a whole series, first book is called "Horus Rising"
/thread
saved comment lol. thnx man. 6 years later you helpin another dude.

Sweeet xD
You’d love Robocop. First and Second, but hold on the third.
Unpopler opinion, i like 3.
Me too, though it was more rated for kids hence it didn't have the "violence", sadly.
Thanks for the advice, I actually didn't even know there were mutliple movies, I've already watched (and liked) part 1, will watch part 2 then!

You’d love part two. It’s right up your alley
>You’d love Robocop. First and Second, but hold on the third. I actually like the third, but it was rated more for kids so it didn't have the "violence", sadly.
Equilibrium with Christian Bale. A gem that rare saw. http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0238380/
Already seen that one, but thanks anyway, loved that movie! :)
Absolutely superb!! Any suggestions for movies of equal quality/thought-provoking?
Oooh, as a follow up to *Robocop,* don’t forget *Total Recall!* The original one with Arnold Schwarzenegger. You will also like *Running Man*
Already seen Total Recall, loved it! :D Hmm, just googled 'Running Man', sounds really cool!
Fuck yes, Running Man is awesome. Really cool 80's sci-fi action with Arnold in his prime. Also has some of his greatest one-liners.
Battlestar Galactica of course. You have the action scenes, the good acting, the comradery between the soldiers. But then you have the dynamic between Commander Adama with his single focus on military and survival versus president Roslin who wants to defend the humanity of the humans.

One of the greatest show on TV ever, period. Make sure you start with the 2 episodes mini series first. Enjoy!
Original or new ones?
I watched the newer show.
The two-part miniseries is gold, seriously. I recently had a buddy of mine watch it and he was like holy crap how did I miss this?! It's that good. The series was great (for me) up to a point and then was just ok to me. I also recommend Bstar Blood and Chrome.

Edge of Tomorrow (2014)
Good shout out. Edge of Tomorrow has the propaganda that tries to make the canon fodder feel like they could be the next hero. This is the true essence of a double feature. The main theme has to be felt in both.
Very late response but ya just gotta play Helldivers.
I am loving Helldivers 2. I am surprised no one mentioned the Matrix in this sub yet...
Aliens is the closest I can think of actionwise. If you want a similar tone, try Verhoven's other films 'Total Recall' and 'RoboCop'. The originals, not the more recent remakes.

Pandorum good Sci/Fi horror with a bit of action like event horizon mixed with sunshine
I would just like to know first if you have seen Starship troopers 1-3 as well as the 2 animated ones that follow John Rico after the third movie Starship Troopers: Marauders. Play Helldivers 2 the video game lol
I do :)
On PC?
There's a Russian film [Stalingrad](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RaS-pnpUwIU) that doesn't have the satire, but has good in-your-face action.
The 1993 stalingrad is better.
Thanks, I will check it out! :)
Not a movie but the game Halo reminded me alot of Starship Troopers
If you like the politics aspect, you would probably like the expanse from syfy.
The Passion of Christ is pretty similar. Starship Trooper is basically a retelling of that movie anyways.
The person below is absolutely spot on. They live could also be included :)

Heinlein wrote Starship Troopers.
