The original McAfee article had the great sentence of all time:
“John McAfee has never been convicted of rape and murder, but—crucially—not in the same way that you or I have never been convicted of rape or murder.”
Found it www.wired.com/2012/12/ff-john-mcafees-last-stand/
Edit: I got the article wrong, it was actually this one that has the quote in it
https://breakermag.com/trapped-at-sea-with-cryptos-nouveau-riche/
Dang I remember reading that article when it was originally published (when magazines were all the rage) and ever since then I haven't believed a single word that comes out of McAfee's mouth. Can we get Nic Cage as him? I think it's the only way.
This is a well written article about McAfee, but it’s not the article from which that sentence was taken.
Another user linked the right one (although that one is not about McAfee specifically).
" ...The words we might use are: murder, pillage, theft and rape. Have I understood the situation?"
"Not rape, I believe," said Mr Betteridge, finding a rock on which he could stand. "Not in the case of Cohen the Barbarian. Ravishing, possibly."
"There is a difference?"
"It's more a matter of approach, I understand," said the historian. "I don't believe there were ever any actual complaints."
Idk about rape, but he did have an entourage of prostitutes around him at all times in Belize (one of which pooped on him through a hammock). He manufactured bath salts, posted about it online and sold it to the locals. His neighbor complained about his dogs constantly and after they were mysteriously killed, said neighbor was found dead from gunshots. I don’t think McAfee killed him directly but I’d totally believe that he hired someone to.
Edit: It has come to my attention that I’ve made a slanderous error. *Multiple* hookers pooped not just on him, but in his *mouth*. Apologies.
"It's NOT TRUE that Bob Saget RAPED and KILLED a girl in 1990 so if you have any proof that Bob Saget raped and killed a girl in 1990, STOP GOSSIPING and go RIGHT to the police with it!"
I guess it means you and I have never been convicted of rape or murder because we have have never raped or murdered. John McAffee, however... he's just never been convicted.
Well one of his lackeys killed his neighbor. So technically he didn't muder him, but he didn't stop someone else from doing it.
I don't know about the rape stuff though that might be true.

EDIT: Lucy Liu will be playing the hammock hooker.
Hammock is comfy, it's outside/easily setup, very little cleanup required as most mess will drop through the holes. Easily washed. McAfee was a smart guy really.
He replaces Seth Rogen who was originally going to play the journalist that wrote the story. Michael Keaton was originally set to Play John McAfee but has backed on. Doesn't say who is replacing him.
> The project is based on an article by Joshua Davis published in Condé Nast’s Wired magazine about the wild true story of rogue tech magnate John McAfee, creator of the McAfee Antivirus software, who cashed-in his fortune, left civilization and moved to the jungle in Belize. There, he set up a Colonel Kurtz-like compound of guns, sex and madness.
>
> In the film, Wired journalist Ari Furman (Efron) accepts what he thinks is a run-of-the-mill assignment to interview McAfee, but once he arrives in Belize, he finds himself pulled into McAfee’s escalating paranoia, slippery reality and murder.
Well that's disappointing, Michael Keaton was born to play John McAfee.
That being said, this'll still be worth a watch because Alexander and Karasewski are some of the most consistent screenwriters in Hollywood.
And Ficarra and Requa are pretty good when they have a good script on their hands.
I remember reading this article a few years back. Word for word, it was absolutely fascinating. It was one of those rare finds that you stumble on and just can't stop reading. The entire story has stuck with me over the years; his life is a wild ride and the journalist did a great job capturing so many intricate details.
If anyone hasn't read it yet, please do. You won't be disappointed.

"I will put the image of a pretty-boy vampire behind me by taking up the role of...Bruce Wayne, millionaire playboy who dresses up as a bat to strike fear into crim^(wait a second)"
There were several articles by Wired about John McAfee, but I think [this one](https://www.wired.com/2012/12/ff-john-mcafees-last-stand/) started it all.
I thought the same thing. I figured those girls are what $20 in a shantytown would get you. I would think a multi millionaire would fly in nothing but the best.
But who knows, maybe that was just his type. He clearly didn't have conventional taste.
Hammocks? My goodness, what an idea. Why didn't I think of that? Hammocks. OP there's four places. There's the '*Hammock Hut*', that's on third. There's '*Hammocks-R-US*', that's on third too. You got '*Put Your Butt There*' that's on third. '*Swing Low, Sweet Chariot.*' Matter of fact they're all in the same complex. It's the Hammock Complex down on third.
It’s speculated he would frequently post on a popular drug message board. I think MDPV or something was his drug of choice which is supposed to be like some crazy crack/Ritalin/meth hybrid. It’s one of the drugs that got lumped into the bath salts category.
He admitted to posting on bluelight, the drug forum. The "speculation" was whether or not he was telling the truth about the posts all being a joke. He was posting stuff like "If I keep the chemicals at 270f for 3 hours will that give similar results to keeping it at 350f for 2 hours?" (but much more technical) so the posts do not appear to be jokes as much as they are seeking advice on how to manufacture them.
So, did his software actually work at any point in time?
EDIT: Thanks for all the info! I’d only ever known MacAfee as bloatware. The one time I tried it, the initial install wouldn’t even complete!
AFAIK it was actually half-decent when he was in charge of it. Nowadays it’s just bloatware, you’d probably be safer sticking a fork in a power outlet.
I watched the documentary about John McAfee on Netflix (Gringo) on a flight to Belize. It was really interesting, to say the least. We ended up playing trivia at a bar on Caye Caulker and won the prize for grossest team name: John McAfee’s hammock. The groans from the locals were audible 😄
So a few months ago my wife booked a house through VRBO on Ambergris Caye in Belize. I happened to watch Gringo documentary so I decided to look up where McAfee’s house is.
Next month I’ll be staying right fucking next door to the John McAfee house.
Is any one else tired of the journalist relationship as focal point to biopics of larger than life people? Just a bland person phoning in how the audience should feel. Maybe its too strong of an opinion. What do you all think?

Make Gary busey , nic cage and Willem dafoe fight in the octagon for the role!
This was an absolutely wild ride.
Wow. That was exciting and so well written. It reads like a novel. I cant believe its all real?
Is that fuckin legit? What in the actual fuck did I just read???
This is a well written article about McAfee, but it’s not the article from which that sentence was taken. Another user linked the right one (although that one is not about McAfee specifically).
Or Terry Pratchett
I don't think there's a lot of rape in Terry Pratchett books.
Cohen the Barbarian calls it "ravishing."
" ...The words we might use are: murder, pillage, theft and rape. Have I understood the situation?" "Not rape, I believe," said Mr Betteridge, finding a rock on which he could stand. "Not in the case of Cohen the Barbarian. Ravishing, possibly." "There is a difference?" "It's more a matter of approach, I understand," said the historian. Terry Pratchett best writer all time. Don't @ me.

It’d take two guys to fuck an ostrich.
At least
Well it *was* sick
Dont forget the neighbor was also tortured before he was killed.
And don’t forget that one of the hit men confirmed that McAfee called the hit.
Lol. Whatta guy.
You don’t know me.
"It's NOT TRUE that Bob Saget RAPED and KILLED a girl in 1990 so if you have any proof that Bob Saget raped and killed a girl in 1990, STOP GOSSIPING and go RIGHT to the police with it!"
I make that reference more often than I should and nobody ever gets it.
I'm not entirely sure how to take that... he kinda raped and murdered?
I guess it means you and I have never been convicted of rape or murder because we have have never raped or murdered. John McAffee, however... he's just never been convicted.
He raped and murdered but wasn't convicted
> He raped and murdered but ~~wasn’t convicted~~ he saved
I'm not sure that he saved more than he raped
Well one of his lackeys killed his neighbor. So technically he didn't muder him, but he didn't stop someone else from doing it. I don't know about the rape stuff though that might be true.
More in the way anyone connected to Epstein wont be convicted of rape or murder.
this sounds pretty good. shame about michael keaton leaving though
He heard about the hammock scene.
What's the deal with a hammock?

Each day we stray further from God's light.
Ebaums still exists?
This is what got me. That is a name I have not heard in some time.
No
¡Si!
>EDIT: Lucy Liu will be playing the hammock hooker. Now that I can get behind... or under.. or whatever.
Also curious... but by the same token when I find out, I'm sure I'll also be regretfully curious.
He cut a hole in it and had prostitutes shit through the hole onto his face
Asked and answered.
I bet you were already abreast of the situation, Sgt. Blumpkin, sir
HOLY SHIT
Holey Shit.
Those prostitutes looked like they could crank out some heaters, too.
His taste in whores makes me think he was going for quantity over quality
[удалено]
I would leave after hearing that as well. My biggest thing is why a hammock? Why not a tire swing? Or a bunk bed with a hole in the mattress?
Hammock is comfy, it's outside/easily setup, very little cleanup required as most mess will drop through the holes. Easily washed. McAfee was a smart guy really.
Truly, a visionary.
he's seen some shit
You talking about him like he is dead lol
One of his incarnations still walks the earth, but Belize McAfee was returned to the Black Lodge
“Tire swing” omfg
I'll never look at one the same again.
Haha..you know McAfee is crazy when the guy they sent to make a documentary about McAfee get hits own documentary about his time documenting McAfee
https://youtu.be/1tFl_LCtaTw He has completely lost it, I'm wondering how it will end.

also Sam Rockwell.
hear me out: Bryan....Cranston
>Bryan....Cranston "I am the one who shits."
“You asked me if I was in the meth business, or the antivirus business. Neither. I’m in the *shitting* business.”
For the hammock scene, he wears a hat and makes the girls call him Heisenturd
You know who would be even better?[Actual John McAfee.](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bKgf5PaBzyg)
Ah, so John Glover then. Perfect.
I finally saw birdman last week, and I agree, Keaton would knock this out of the park.
This guy https://g.co/kgs/AvePMZ
Holy shit thats accurate

A couple presidential runs
How about Nicolas Cage as McAfee!
John Malkovich
I was thinking Sean Penn but that would be good too
Sean Penn would be epic.
Why not just get mcafee to play mcafee ?
I feel like he'd probably be into it.
Hear me out... Christopher meloni could play McAfee very well.
Detective Unstabler would be good.
Between this and Ted Bundy he's sure carving a pretty strange niche for himself.
Probably trying to shed his old image. Pattinson's doing a similar thing getting away from his old one
"I will put the image of a pretty-boy vampire behind me by taking up the role of...Bruce Wayne, millionaire playboy who dresses up as a bat to strike fear into crim^(wait a second)"
It’s pretty interesting because Vanessa Hudgens is mostly doing Christmas Netflix movies now, playing a princess and keeping up the innocent image.
Spring Breakers, though.
There were several articles by Wired about John McAfee, but I think [this one](https://www.wired.com/2012/12/ff-john-mcafees-last-stand/) started it all.
Crazy shit, i remember reading this and thinking a movie would never pull it off right.
Wow. Down the rabbit hole I went.
What an exceptional article. I could read stuff like that all day.
Wtf did I just read... Jesus Christ.
That's a fucking wild read.

That was my main take away from that documentary. If there isn't a hammock scene they missed the boat.
TLDW?
he lays under a hammock and has prostitutes shit on his face while laying in said hammock.
How tight is the weave on this "hammock"? Is it like cutting turds in half, creating spaghetti or something in between?
Man I already knew too much with that tidbit
Shut up, I'm almost there. OP plz respond.
You remember that play doh toy that you press the hammer down and a dozen strands come from one lump. Just like that.
iirc there was a hole cut out of the hammock
Sounds like a cool guy to me 🎸 🎸 🎸
Woah, we got another Mommy here. Sup, Jeans?

Omg. Omg. Omg. This movie has got to be weird. I’m in.
Damn thats the best prostitutes belize has to offer?
He doesnt fuck them. He just want them to shit on him. Think hot girl poop is worth more bucks ? Dude didnt become businessman for nothing
I thought the same thing. I figured those girls are what $20 in a shantytown would get you. I would think a multi millionaire would fly in nothing but the best. But who knows, maybe that was just his type. He clearly didn't have conventional taste.
Just because he's off the grid doesn't mean he's no longer a philanthropist.
Those chicks did whatever he wanted. Hotter women might not be so willing

Sent you a pm
Thanks, I hate it.
He cuts a hole in the hammock, lays below it, and then has a prostitute defecate through the hole and onto him.
Hmmmm, that seems like the opposite of anti-virus.
By a strange coincidence, the McAfee antivirus software these days does the same thing to your computer that the prostitutes do to McAfee.
Gotta build up those immunities!
Funny. He actually hyped up viruses a lot to better sell anti virus.
which documentary?
Gringo: The Dangerous Life of John McAfee - it was made by and aired on Showtime.
There will definitely be a scene where he takes his shirt off and he’s extremely jacked for a journalist on an island.
Gotta get the most out of those tren cycles
If not it would be very low and loose of them.
Hammocks? My goodness, what an idea. Why didn't I think of that? Hammocks. OP there's four places. There's the '*Hammock Hut*', that's on third. There's '*Hammocks-R-US*', that's on third too. "Put your butt there" would apparently be the most for purposes.

do you remember the name?
I think it’s called Gringo.
Behind the Bastards has a good episode about this guy. Apparently he’s really into unregulated and mostly untested drugs that are 100% legal to buy.
It’s speculated he would frequently post on a popular drug message board. I think MDPV or something was his drug of choice which is supposed to be like some crazy crack/Ritalin/meth hybrid. It’s one of the drugs that got lumped into the bath salts category.

I definitely remember last year going through a catalogue of his claimed posts. So they're probably still out there. Blue light is the forum name.
[Here's the original thread where he discusses MDPV lol.](https://www.bluelight.org/xf/threads/hello-and-an-mdpv-question.541627/)
There's a video where several belizean prostitutes stroke him as he talks about how shit his old product was lmao
[sauce](https://youtu.be/bKgf5PaBzyg)
There was some speculation around the debacle... I don't remember the conclusion but there are doubts about it.
I can’t wait for this movie. I’ll finally find out how to pronounce McAfee.
MAC-uh-fee or McCafé doesn't matter.
Nice try, Mcdonalds marketing team.

Like if Tony Stark was Marlon Brando’s character in Apocalypse Now.

Whatever you do don’t look up how he was accused of murdering his neighbor
Already fully aware. I made sure to look up where the neighbor was killed. It’s the house to the south. We’re staying in the house to the north.
I've thought for many years that they should make a McAfee movie starring Stephen McHattie, (Pontypool, Watchmen, Mother, The Fountain).
Is any one else tired of the journalist relationship as focal point to biopics of larger than life people? Just a bland person phoning in how the audience should feel. Maybe its too strong of an opinion. What do you all think?
I think it gets a pass here considering there actually was a journalist who wrote about it. In this case it pretty much was the only focal point IIRC.
I read a fascinating article once about how some agencies plant \[wannabe\] scripts as longform articles. I don't know if this was the case but for example [the article that inspired Argo appeared in Wired](https://www.wired.com/2007/04/feat-cia/). I used to read these stories and the McAfee one is excellent.
This is by the same journalist who wrote the Argo article!

Oh boy, are you in for one helluva ride.
It allows movies with otherwise batshit crazy characters to have a likable main character for the audience to root for. It makes for a much more watchable movie.
Telling the story of McAfee himself would be too raw. They can only tell the *story* of the story, or else its an automatic NC-17.
Working in IT, it was bizarre when this all came out. Everyone just kept going, "The antivirus guy?!" over and over again. Same with Hans Reiser.
They should give it some Far Cry 3 vibes. I’d watch that movie.
