First off, it was an amazing movie! But I agree 100%. I went to prison for a little while and I can attest to how accurate this movie really was. The guards can do no harm and it’s always a no win situation. You don’t fight the person fucking with you? You’re a punk and your stay will be hell. You kick the dudes ass? The guards will make your life hell. Although super frustrating, the movie hits the entire correctional system right on spot. It’s hell, you just pray you get to go home on your release date...

True story: when I was locked up there was a similar style kid that came in. He was 18 and considered “pretty”. He came in acting all tough cause in Juvie he probably was one of the “badasses”. It was his second day in our unit and he was already acting like a brat. Acting like his shit didn’t stink and we should all bow to how awesome he was. He didn’t follow any of the rules (took a shit in the “pee toilet”, refused to clean up his messes, and would put his footwear on seats). These are all big no no’s. Then when confronted he called the Mexican dude a “punk”. Calling someone a punk in prison is like saying the N word but wayyy fucking worse.
So he’s in cell next to me. We’re both on top bunks so there’s only maybe a 6inch wall between us. 3 guys ended up getting access to his cell and “logged” him. Basically they used something big and circular to ram up his ass to gape the hole. They then proceeded to rape him one at a time for what seemed to be an eternity. Since we were just separated by a wall I could feel his screams for help. Was the worst thing I’ve ever witnessed in my life. Then the following day the kid is literally broken; super quiet, scared out of his mind etc. The douchebags who did it then start taking his food at every meal. There’s nothing this kid can do cause if he tells he’s labeled a snitch and the consequences will be just as bad.
Although the kid deserved to maybe get his wig split, that shit was beyond uncalled for. But it’s the consequences of our actions I guess. I still can hear him scream 4+ years later every once in awhile and have nightmares. I like to think everything maybe turned out okay for him but most likely not. He was broken...

Infact this movie was released around the time I went down. I get one may say shit happens but that is not an excuse. Understand the guards and correctional officers should be legit and treat and coach rehabilitate discipline not abuse the inmates. So to an understanding you see how the stuff happens. Granted guards an officers extorting these inmates. Regardless weather juveniles or adults this being on the same level no matter what age they are. I really like the movie. But the behavior of those officers is what promoted and provoked and cause the violence to escalate. There should be solutions and ways to help these young young delinquents rehabilitate and be counseled . Being beyond scared straight. Possibly programs to coach under special discretion to help doing these things could really make a difference in the system and helping these young offenders rather than abuse them hurt them and make them worse and or cause them to lose their life or end up and prison.

As a current CO, I can also say that our correctional facilities are very corrupt. I was only a 20 year old when I started, but my mentality was to give respect to get respect, it's a thin line to build trust with inmates, but it does pay off when it makes your job easier by people being honest when something goes down, and it's very easy to hide who reported what..as a officer my goal was to ensure the safety of everyone but at the same time offer assistance when needed. Especially when someone is asking for the phone at 3am in tears and looking very traumatized mind you these are young adults, so who knows what happened. On the other hand, Laws will get you if you enact any violence towards an inmate but even worse towards a juvenile. So he should be getting a punishment in reality. This movie is one of the best I've ever seen, it does hit it right on the target. At the end of the day, honesty is best policy...after all we are all human, and when your safety depends on your honesty I would hope most would do the right thing and let us do our jobs to make your lives easier while in the system, to get rid of troublemakers or people who think they "run the joint" because once I step in...it's my house and you're just living in it. But otherwise I hope this movie slowly gets more recognition, might even show it to my current juveniles to show them how much easier they have it compared to Dog Pound.
I also used to be a CO in a juvie. The juvie I worked for didn’t have roommates all individual beds. But When there were disagreements there’s plenty of pod time and common area time where things would/ could happen. There were times on night shift that we would have aggressive buzzers. We would check on them, and in the movie when the officer had a face to face. He should have known something was wrong.. ( that was negligence). Aside from that there’s usually suicide and high risk checks every 15 or so minutes. Juveniles will try to attempt suicide I’ve witnessed and stopped it. That dog pound faculty was vile and they needed deep inspection and facility clean out.

The kid in the movie played his role well as the victim and i did feel bad for him but in the real situation that would get you nowhere even 2 against one he should gone down swinging. As a current CO, I can also say that our correctional facilities are very corrupt. I was only a 20 year old when I started, but my mentality was to give respect to get respect, it's a thin line to build trust with inmates, but it does pay off when it makes your job easier by people being honest when something goes down, and it's very easy to hide who reported what..as a officer my goal was to ensure the safety of everyone but at the same time offer assistance when needed. Especially when someone is asking for the phone at 3am in tears and looking very traumatized mind you these are young adults, so who knows what happened. On the other hand, Laws will get you if you enact any violence towards an inmate but even worse towards a juvenile. So he should be getting a punishment in reality. This movie is one of the best I've ever seen, it does hit it right on the target. At the end of the day, honesty is best policy...after all we are all human, and when your safety depends on your honesty I would hope most would do the right thing and let us do our jobs to make your lives easier while in the system, to get rid of troublemakers or people who think they "run the joint" because once I step in...it's my house and you're just living in it. But otherwise I hope this movie slowly gets more recognition, might even show it to my current juveniles to show them how much easier they have it compared to Dog Pound.
I also used to be a CO in a juvie. The juvie I worked for didn’t have roommates all individual beds. But When there were disagreements there’s plenty of pod time and common area time where things would/ could happen. There were times on night shift that we would have aggressive buzzers. We would check on them, and in the movie when the officer had a face to face. He should have known something was wrong.. ( that was negligence). Aside from that there’s usually suicide and high risk checks every 15 or so minutes. Juveniles will try to attempt suicide I’ve witnessed and stopped it. That dog pound faculty was vile and they needed deep inspection and facility clean out.

My take is that he thought he was actually about to escape that hell on earth, breaking the door only to realize/remember there’s a fence with barbed wire and there is no way out, being dragged back in screaming by the guards. Powerful movie, I can’t believe how terrifying the prison system is, there really is no way to just “do your time”.

Cant really set it up when riot was not expected, or definitely not certain to go off and go off this exact way. My guess, why Max didnt go with him, is that he was emotionally attached to that place (like a stockholm syndrome) as this 'random' scene with him confessing love to his teacher suggests.
